illone84 02-17-2006, 04:41 PM Finland 4 Czechs 3 :yo:
Noutaja 02-17-2006, 05:05 PM Swiss delivered such bitter medicine to Czeck overconfidense and complacency that I can´t await anything but defeat for Finland. 2-1 or 3-1.
BlackLabel 02-17-2006, 05:44 PM I can't see Finland winning this one. Czech lost to Sweizerland yesterday, and they usually come up huge to the next game. I say 3-1 Czech.
Hensta 02-17-2006, 05:47 PM I can't see Finland winning this one. Czech lost to Sweizerland yesterday, and they usually come up huge to the next game. I say 3-1 Czech.
Oh comoon! We will take this one too. 4-1 to Finns and on Sunday well see the best hockey in the world Fin-Can!! :yo:
Rabid Ranger 02-17-2006, 06:01 PM I love the Finnish reverse-psychology that usually pops in threads like these! :biglaugh:
Ross MacLochness 02-17-2006, 06:14 PM If this game isn't broadcast live in its entirety on the CBC at the pre-determined time slot of 3:00pm EST, as it says it will be on the CBC website..... I'm gonna lose it. I am going to absolutely snap on somebody.
Paatos 02-17-2006, 07:15 PM I love the Finnish reverse-psychology that usually pops in threads like these! :biglaugh:
The pessimist is never disappointed ;)
Finns have had easy two games and now they need to get their heads straight and concentrate for a change. I'd say they will run into trouble with D-men who cannot keep up with the Czech forwards and taking stupid penalties. 3-2 to Czech Rep. and a wake-up call for Finland.
Damn it, it's the evening game.. I'm going to party tomorrow and probably won't have a chance to see the game  First real test in the Olympics for Finland. Go lions :yo:
joshjull 02-17-2006, 07:21 PM I was all set to cheer for the Finns with Teppo and Lydman. But the Czechs just called up Ales Kotalik. What do I do now.
Paatos 02-17-2006, 07:23 PM I was all set to cheer for the Finns with Teppo and Lydman. But the Czechs just called up Ales Kotalik. What do I do now.

joshjull 02-17-2006, 07:28 PM Grab a beer and enjoy the game
Good call, you can never go wrong with that strategy
hifk88 02-17-2006, 08:07 PM (Finland 4-2 Czech Republic)
zarathustra1900 02-17-2006, 11:14 PM Well, I was theer and watched the teams play (separately of course)..
..being a big Czech fan, I think the Fins are going to surprise us..
Hasek is out, his replacement not as steady..so is Patrik....he's a big player for us.
I think the Fins are going to surprise a lot of people this year...
...but I won't say they will win :-)
It will be one of the best games of the Games IMO.

SwisshockeyAcademy 02-17-2006, 11:52 PM If this game isn't broadcast live in its entirety on the CBC at the pre-determined time slot of 3:00pm EST, as it says it will be on the CBC website..... I'm gonna lose it. I am going to absolutely snap on somebody.
I love it. I'll pull a flipper too. Perhaps we can have a moment of unity across the country by busting something in disgust over the CBC's piss poor coverage.
ILuvLA 02-18-2006, 12:21 AM I think that the Finns are going to take this one, but it should be a good game with two really fast teams going at each other.
Kostik 02-18-2006, 02:36 AM Finallly opponent from big 7! Should be great hockey...i'm expecting that Czechs want to bounce back from the loss, so they will try hard.
4-2 Czechs if everything goes well...Nitty is not Kipper(as Vokoun is not Hasek, but still...)
Subway Schenn 02-18-2006, 03:16 AM Czech Republic: 8
Finland: 3
C-J...* 02-18-2006, 03:49 AM Only a handfull of the Finnish players would even make the Czech team, but I still think the Finns are going to win this one.
Motivation usually owns skill.
Tonzan 02-18-2006, 03:50 AM I really look forward to this game. I´ll probably watch it all by myself so I can shout and jump as I will.. If Finland wins.. I promised to write a praise poem for the team :) That won´t be pretty but I´ll do it. :)
Predictions:
-First physical game of the tounatment for these teams
-Therefore at least one "big league" player injury
-One goalie will be a disapontment.. which one?
-There will be a total of 4 goals in this game, so..
-Finland takes this one 3-1!! Go Go GO!
Corto 02-18-2006, 04:09 AM Predictions:
-First physical game of the tounatment for these teams
-Therefore at least one "big league" player injury
Elias is out after a big cross-check vs Germany.
Physical enough?
Tonzan 02-18-2006, 05:04 AM Elias is out after a big cross-check vs Germany.
Physical enough?
Oh, I forgot. Germany game must have been rough. Somewhy I can´t see Germany playing a fair hard checking game.. I didn´t see the hit that injured Elias, but I have a feeling it wasn´t the kind of a hard play people like to see.
Hopefully it´s going to be a clean but tough game tonight, right?
Winner 02-18-2006, 05:10 AM Finns will win, 4-2 or 3-1, I guess.
It's our grand strategy, get underrated and then strike back in the quarterfinals :madfire:
Padawan 02-18-2006, 05:45 AM Two games so far for Team Finland. 11 goals scored, 0 goals scored against. Will this be a third shutout in a row? I doubt it but with a great game all around it's possible.
It's a hard challenge for both teams imo. Hard for us Finns because we've played against two countries that aren't in the top six, with all due respect, and now one of the hardest opponent mentally for Team Finland. No mistake goes unpunished and you have to play every situation 100%.
For the Czechs it's hard because they have to bounce back and the opponent isn't one of the easiest one either. I'm not going to guess the winner, but I'll guess that the winner will have two goals more than the loser and it's going to be a tight game.
Savolainen 02-18-2006, 05:59 AM Finland will win the game 4-2 because we have Selanne who will score a Hattrick.
Borlag 02-18-2006, 06:06 AM I have a hard time believing that we could manage a shutout against the Czech. Their individual skill level is simply so much higher than ours and even though Finland is a hardworking Team (with a capital letter-t intentionally) who when needed defends with the whole team, I don't think we can avoid having a PP goal or two scored against us.
Hensta 02-18-2006, 10:25 AM Im ready for action! Beers are ready! All my friends are ready! And we have to wait 4hours!!! damn! Well we just have to watch ski-jumping first. :) GO FIN GO!
RangerBoy 02-18-2006, 01:23 PM CNBC will have this game in it's entirety starting a 3pm
It's also on Universal HD

Hemmer Time 02-18-2006, 03:23 PM GO CZECH GO :yo:
Should be an ecstatic game, heres hoping that Hemsky gets a hat-trick ;)
Force 02-18-2006, 03:31 PM Go finnland... if germany wants to say in we have to kick the czechs out... :jump:
Matti_A 02-18-2006, 03:32 PM The Czech's will win this one. It's the first game against a more offensive minded team for them in this tournament, and it's in games against our kind of opponents that they usually come up big.
And the Czech's have a better goalie.
Hope to see an exciting game tonite. :)
Korpido 02-18-2006, 03:44 PM is this game on TV?

MrAlfie 02-18-2006, 04:29 PM Who scored the 1st goal?
zidlicky scored on a pp for the czechs and then jokinen for the finns
David Singleton 02-18-2006, 04:30 PM Vokoun was hung out to dry. The defenseman just floated backward and never challenged either the shooter or blocked the passing lane to force a shot and disallow the 2-1.
The way Vokoun was coming out, he expected a shot to be forced.
David
SENSational 02-18-2006, 04:31 PM Nice play by Jagr.
Panopticon 02-18-2006, 04:31 PM What a weak call on Peltonen. And the one on Koivu as well, but at least that one made some sense...
MartinFr 02-18-2006, 04:33 PM the call on Peltonen was weak but Koivu deserved a 2min rest.
SENSational 02-18-2006, 04:35 PM Damn Jagr is playing good.

Jagr looks damn good.
Ross MacLochness 02-18-2006, 04:41 PM Good game so far.
Bob and Harry are totally clueless.
Borlag 02-18-2006, 04:44 PM the call on Peltonen was weak but Koivu deserved a 2min rest.
Yup, he did. That call on Malik was also bad, he got Selänne's stick right in his face, raised his hands and for that he got called for holding. Ah well, I just hope this game wont be settled by a bad call.
blackbird80 02-18-2006, 04:44 PM Nice goal by Jokinen, assisted by Koivu. Beautiful play by Koivu! Jagr is just too hot, hope the Finns find a way to stop him. A great match, hard to say who will win!

MartinFr 02-18-2006, 05:06 PM ugly...nothing else but ugly

RuuhkaTukka 02-18-2006, 05:07 PM Hope Jagr is OK. Good hit, but unfortunatelly Jagr had his head down.
Freudian 02-18-2006, 05:07 PM Does Vancouver have a game vs NYR later this season. I think Orr wants a chat with Ruutu.
Padawan 02-18-2006, 05:07 PM Ruutu you jerk! Disgrace! Ugly and unnecessary takle. Not only this was bad tackle but this also hurts the team badly. Yeah, real intelligent J.Ruutu we have here... :shakehead
IceKatsRHot 02-18-2006, 05:07 PM How much did Ruutu get paid to take out Jagr? Ouch.

brendadervin 02-18-2006, 05:09 PM Keep your head up!
HughJass* 02-18-2006, 05:09 PM I can't call anything like that clean....Jagr was defenseless. I'm sick of all of Jarko Ruutu's crap.
Keep your head up?! He's battling along the boards for the puck. You people and that nonsense :shakehead
MrAlfie 02-18-2006, 05:09 PM Clean hit by NHL standards. Not sure if there's anything different in Olympic hockey.
this check was FAR from a clean hit, jagrs head was down and right next to the boards.. you dont go for the head when you see a player is right next to the boards with it..
ruutu deserves to have his clock cleaned
Bank Shot 02-18-2006, 05:09 PM Clean hit by NHL standards. Not sure if there's anything different in Olympic hockey.
:shakehead
No way is that a clean hit in the NHL. Its charging at the very least. What a pathetic puke Ruutu is.
Epsilon 02-18-2006, 05:10 PM That was a blatant boarding/charging against a player in a defenseless position. 100% dirty hit, but what else is new from Ruutu.
Telecaster Fanatic 02-18-2006, 05:10 PM Ville N taking the penalty for Ruutu.
Vikke 02-18-2006, 05:10 PM Ruutu is a cheap shot artist. The definition of cheap shot artist. MAN that was ugly. Should get a two game suspension. Disgusting hit.
larsmark 02-18-2006, 05:10 PM Geeez what a freaking ugly hit. I hope he gets suspended for the rest of the tournament. Ruutu is such a moron.
Czech Your Math 02-18-2006, 05:10 PM CHEAP! :madfire:
Well, unnecessary tackle from Ruutu. But Jagr also ducked down in the situation.
Hmmm.....maybe Jagr will use something else than Joga 235 after this....hopefully he´s ok though.
BruinsFanAK 02-18-2006, 05:12 PM The best way to give Ruutu some payback is to win the game.
C-J...* 02-18-2006, 05:12 PM Charging right at the head on a defenceless player half & half turned towards the boards.
Ruutu once again shows his true colors, and he laughed afterwords even though Jagr was bleeding all over the ice, if I was a Finn I would be ashamed.
Chevy Cheveldae 02-18-2006, 05:12 PM ....hopefully he´s ok though.
yup, at least he could walk off the ice
a bit woozy, but probably just a couple of stitches
Predonater 02-18-2006, 05:13 PM :shakehead

My thoughts exactly. Just a stupid hit on a guy.
Dig Out Your Soul 02-18-2006, 05:13 PM That was a blatant boarding/charging against a player in a defenseless position. 100% dirty hit, but what else is new from Ruutu.
I'll give you boarding, but since it wasn't from behind, what determines a "defenseless" position? You're taught since you were 2 to keep your head up, Jagr had his head down and didn't see it coming. He was defenseless because he wasn't aware of his surroundings. I think it was dirty because of the head shot, but players have to share some blame for having their head down.
Frozen 02-18-2006, 05:14 PM And here I was hoping we wouldn't see this side of Ruutu in this tournament... sigh. :shakehead
Hope Jagr is fine.

Believe me, I am. Jarkko Ruutu is a disgrace and I am ashamed that he is a fellow finn. Hopefully he will be punished by Team Finland management also.
daikan 02-18-2006, 05:16 PM Yeah, that stuff doesn't belong in the Olympics. Or the NHL. :shakehead
Let's hope he recovers quickly!
psycho_dad 02-18-2006, 05:16 PM Damn... this will mess up Finland's game. Sometimes I just hate Jarkko Ruutu...
I hate Jarkko Ruutu when he does something stupid, but hitting is part of hockey. Unfortunately Jagr got hurt, but the hit was perfectly clean and a penalty, especially a 5+20 is ridiculous. Ruutu got the penalty because the injured player was Jagr, and because there was blood. The hit itself was legal.
Maybe his silly Jofa helmet cut his scalp??
jepjepjoo 02-18-2006, 05:16 PM IMHO (might be biased) Keep your freakin head up
psycho_dad 02-18-2006, 05:17 PM Jagr was like 10cm away from the boards if even that. That just is not boarding.
MartinFr 02-18-2006, 05:18 PM Oh please, it wasn't a clean hit, drop it. What Ruutu did was nothing but stupid and ugly, but maybe you'll need that hit to realize it.
Bank Shot 02-18-2006, 05:18 PM I'll give you boarding, but since it wasn't from behind, what determines a "defenseless" position? That's faulty logic. So if a player falls to his knees, and another player comes along and elbows him into next week, then the player who gets hit should share the blame for putting himself in that position eh?
Predonater 02-18-2006, 05:20 PM Noticed that Marek Zidlicky had a few words for Ruutu as he walked off the ice. Wonder if this will carry over to the game coming up in Nashville between Vancouver and the Preds??? Gotta think that some mouthing will take place. LOL!!

HughJass* 02-18-2006, 05:23 PM Who cares? Jagr was on his feet with his head down.
There goes some more faulty logic.
It didnt look at all that dirty. Boarding for sure Ill give ya that one. But given the combo of the boards being higher than the NHL, Jagr ducking at the last minute due to his head being down, and Jagr's choice of helmet which is illegal in the NHL, it all looks worse than it would have if it was an NHL game. Just my opinion though.
Vikke 02-18-2006, 05:24 PM 2-1 Finland at 15:02 of the second period. Lehtonhen(?) scores.

Gags1288 02-18-2006, 05:24 PM I just tuned into this one after watching the US game, how has Niitty been?
Epsilon 02-18-2006, 05:24 PM Who cares? Jagr was on his feet with his head down.
It's not like he was skating up-ice with his head down and Ruutu met him at full speed crossing the blueline or something. He was stationary digging around along the boards for the puck. Ruutu could have come in to try and take the puck, tried to get body position on Jagr, or tried to bump him out of the way. Instead he came in looking for the hit that would cause the maximum injury to Jagr.
5minsforfighting 02-18-2006, 05:25 PM Very nervous game. There will be a bench clearing brawl at the end of the game :teach:
psycho_dad 02-18-2006, 05:25 PM You must be from Finland. :biglaugh:
Yes I am.
Explain what was dirty in that hit? Players should keep their heads up, especially when they are at the boards. Ruutu hit him ON THE SHOULDER. What is wrong with that? Isnt that what hitting is about?
It was unfortunate, but clean. Jagr was only inches away from the boards, so its not boarding.
So what is the problem?
C-J...* 02-18-2006, 05:25 PM Believe me, I am. Jarkko Ruutu is a disgrace and I am ashamed that he is a fellow finn. Hopefully he will be punished by Team Finland management also.
The thing that made it even worse, was the fact that he had a big smirk on his face after the situation was over.
cant get over how much I hate that smug son of a...
I really hope that someone takes care of him when he gets back to the NHL, and this coming from someone thats neither a Jagr, a Rangers or a Czech-fan.
Ajacied 02-18-2006, 05:26 PM Huh? The goal was Koivu's though? Pretty scrappy garbage goal and didn't see the official statsline but it seemd like a Koivu (or Selanne) goal, assisted by Jere.. no?
Freudian 02-18-2006, 05:26 PM Ironically Ruutu was replaced by Ville Nieminen. Ville must be delighted with Ruutu.
Vikke 02-18-2006, 05:26 PM Very nervous game. There will be a bench clearing brawl at the end of the game :teach:

Idiot Ruutu. No respect to other players.
Force 02-18-2006, 05:26 PM Anybody who approved to an action like that which intends or at least takes into account a serious injury is just not a decent human beeing or a sportsman who is dedicated to fairplay.
Jagr is a great player and seeing him beeing injured and unable to compete for a medal because of such an ugly move is simply sad.
Predonater 02-18-2006, 05:26 PM So this all begs a question. Should World Hockey and NHL all get together and decide upon a uniform standard for equipment (helmets), board height, rink size??? Just a shot in the dark.
Panopticon 02-18-2006, 05:26 PM Oh yeah great...
Dave Brown 02-18-2006, 05:27 PM That's faulty logic. So if a player falls to his knees, and another player comes along and elbows him into next week, then the player who gets hit should share the blame for putting himself in that position eh?

Gags1288 02-18-2006, 05:29 PM The fins forward got too aggressive on that kill, allowed Zidlicky to just walk right in and rip one and it was a great shot, not really any chance for Niitty.

Dig Out Your Soul 02-18-2006, 05:30 PM It's not like he was skating up-ice with his head down and Ruutu met him at full speed crossing the blueline or something. He was stationary digging around along the boards for the puck. Ruutu could have come in to try and take the puck, tried to get body position on Jagr, or tried to bump him out of the way. Instead he came in looking for the hit that would cause the maximum injury to Jagr.
I already said it was dirty. For sure there was a better way to go about it, such as what you've already said. I'm just saying, Jagr had his head down and it wasn't from behind, I don't think it was worthy of 5 and a game.
Predonater 02-18-2006, 05:30 PM Maybe. Not sure, not rink size at least.

psycho_dad 02-18-2006, 05:32 PM Anybody who approved to an action like that which intends or at least takes into account a serious injury is just not a decent human beeing or a sportsman who is dedicated to fairplay.
Jagr is a great player and seeing him beeing injured and unable to compete for a medal because of such an ugly move is simply sad.
The thing is...hockey is a physical sport. I absolutely hate players getting injured, but on the other hand, if it is within the rules, it is ok.
People might DIE because of hits, but if they are clean hits, then the dead person knew the risks. If it's dirty, it should be taken to court.
What Ruutu did was a clean hit with unfortunate results. Still, it should not reward a penalty, because all he did was play hockey.

Doesnt matter if it was Jagr or any other star, could´ve been a fourthliner in Latvia, it was still a disgusting hit on a defenceless player. there wasnt shoulder to shoulder, it was shoulder/elbow towards the head, he even aimed lower than any usual hit would be in that situation, simply cause he wanted to hit the head and take Jagr out of the game.
This takes me back to the Niedermayer Vs Forsberg incident, you all know what Im talking about. :madfire:
And dont use the word "sportsmanship" and Ruutu in the same sentence pls, atleast if it doesnt include "no".
Suspend him and then pull a Bertuzzi Vs Moore on his *** back in the NHL.
I love the physical part of hockey, noone likes a clean hit more than I do, this however had nothing to do with this sport.
Jussi 02-18-2006, 05:38 PM You cant mean that mate. That was ugly.

Random Oracle 02-18-2006, 05:39 PM I think it was an awful hit by Ruutu and worth the penalty he got. I really hope Jagr will be OK, although I can't help but wonder if a proper helmet could have protected him more. You could see the Jofa helmet bend in the replay.
Anyway, I think 2-2 is pretty fair after 2 periods. Some weak calls both ways, but the game is still wide open.
Force 02-18-2006, 05:40 PM Do you play ice hockey?
I do.
If i make a hit, i do it for a purpose.
I try to knock the puck carrier of the puck.
You can use the amount of power you need to accomplish that goal, or you can try to hit as hard as you can.
Jagr lost the battle for the puck already. There was no need to bump into him like that. It did not change the play on the ice at all. However it took a verry good player out of the game, and that is what he wanted to do.
As a matter of fakt he increased finlands chance to win by taking jagr out. That was absolutely intentional and to be honest i'd ban this guy from the olympics.
Else we get another Bertuzi situation where some Jagr NHL teammate tries to kill Rutuu during the next game.
C-J...* 02-18-2006, 05:41 PM What Ruutu did was a clean hit with unfortunate results. Still, it should not reward a penalty, because all he did was play hockey.

Folks, I gotta tell you. I'm watching this in HD with my DVR and I'm watching it in slow motion. Jagr is not on his knees. Rutuu does not lead with his elbow. Jagr had given up possession just a split second prior. And above all else, it is not boarding by any definition of the term.
Quite honestly, I am struggling to see how this is a "dirty" hit moreso than it was "Jagr's bleeding, it must've been illegal~!"
Vikke 02-18-2006, 05:42 PM No explanation necessary.
Quoted for emphasis. :)
Borlag 02-18-2006, 05:43 PM It wasn't a boarding but it was a very blatant charging penalty. Ruutu came at him full speed. True Jagr did duck and that made the situation even worse, but the fact remains that he did charge to make that bodycheck. On top of this, Jagr was fighting for the puck with another finn and there was absolutely 0 need for any kind of bodycheck.
Different thing entirely if Ruutu really was dumb enough to try and injure Jagr. I don't think he did, but I'm really not too sure about that either.
As for Zidlicky, his offensive skills seem to be very underrated in the NHL, wish we could pry him back to HIFK :D
psycho_dad 02-18-2006, 05:43 PM You cant mean that mate. That was ugly.

I can agree with you. I have my personal problems with "charging" as a penalty overall. But ok, I can agree that it might have been a 2 minute charging penalty (even though as I have now watched the replay in slow-mo several times Ruutu's leaves one skate on the ice).
Czech Your Math 02-18-2006, 05:45 PM It's hits like that which contribute to the frequent injuries of many NHL starsmake the NHL less than it could be.

Since there is none. Shoulder contact, not boarding, slow speed....
There is no explanation, other than the fact that the other player is a superstar and the other is crap.
But same rules should apply to all. If Jagr would have hit Ruutu like that, it would not have been a penalty, since there was no ground for penalty.

jepjepjoo 02-18-2006, 05:47 PM there wasnt shoulder to shoulder, it was shoulder/elbow towards the head

And could we have an NHL ref please, please! Anderson doesn't call the obvious holding and hooking, yet somehow manages to find ways to penalize both teams for something that wasn't a call at all or something that should've been a call on another team (the Erat dive). And no that was not boarding.

Theres alot of checks that are thrown where a guy is fighting for the puck and he just gets leveled and they dont see the hit coming. IE Scott Stevens as a prime example. With a NHL legal helmet I doubt Jagr gets split open and maybe doesnt get injured at all
