txomisc 02-17-2006, 11:47 AM when they first unveiled those nike uniforms i was a bit weary but thought they were ok. Now watching the u.s. women play against team sweden (who is wearing the old style) I say they look great. Sweden looks like a bunch of lumps and u.s. looks athletic. Those swedish uniforms basically (to me) look absurd next to that of the US women.
Telecaster Fanatic 02-17-2006, 12:01 PM Sweden scores 2-1 USA.
Telecaster Fanatic 02-17-2006, 12:03 PM And i agree txomisc, those uniforms are pretty nice now when you have gotten used to them.
Crossroads* 02-17-2006, 12:05 PM 2-2!!
Nihilism 02-17-2006, 12:07 PM Go Sweden!
Nihilism 02-17-2006, 12:13 PM Wow, it looks like the 2002 GMG with all these American powerplays.
creative giant* 02-17-2006, 12:15 PM Man.. the Oilers should sign this Swedish goalie.
Telecaster Fanatic 02-17-2006, 12:15 PM Damn without Kim in goal we would be a couple goals down by now.
Nihilism 02-17-2006, 12:22 PM Thought women's hockey wasn't competitve?
The American women are overrated. They had trouble with the Finns, and are having much more trouble in this one. They'll prolly win this one (I bet they'll get some more friendly calls from the ref) but will be blown out in the GMG by Canada.

This has been a great game to watch so far, but the US will win, If they put in that extra gear that is. But i really hope our ladies will upset and get the win.
3 goals = chili 02-17-2006, 12:31 PM just found this game on tv hows it been goin down so far?
daikan 02-17-2006, 12:34 PM just found this game on tv hows it been goin down so far?
Well, it's the 2nd intermission now, 2-2. Kim Martin has been playing , well, great!
USA will probably win though. :(
SwisshockeyAcademy 02-17-2006, 12:37 PM Sarah Pitiful had four open nets on the five on three. She whiffed on three and put another over the net. Darwitz said to hell with it and wound up with a big slapper after that. This all came with Sweden using about as bad a five on three strategy as you will see. Interesting game because of it all.
3 goals = chili 02-17-2006, 12:38 PM wow, just saw the replay of the 2nd goal....TERRIBLE GOAL given up by the US, and a great effort by Sweden.
the first goal wasn't pretty for the US either, probably should have been stopped by the goalie as it went right through the wickets....
Nihilism 02-17-2006, 12:40 PM the US will win
Probably, but anything can happen.
I am sure you thought "Sweden will win" during that game against Belarus a few years ago.

Nihilism 02-17-2006, 12:49 PM :shakehead American PP
Just let them play.
Nihilism 02-17-2006, 12:51 PM Wow, ANOTHER American PP. This game is becoming a joke.
Melrose_Jr. 02-17-2006, 12:51 PM Body-checking? Huh?
Telecaster Fanatic 02-17-2006, 12:52 PM Body-checking? Huh?

Can't let those frail women be body-checked, you know.
ladybugblue 02-17-2006, 12:55 PM Very impressed with this Sweden team...as much as I like the U.S. team I think Sweden going to the Gold medal final would be HUGE for women's hockey!!
Telecaster Fanatic 02-17-2006, 12:56 PM Very impressed with this Sweden team...as much as I like the U.S. team I think Sweden going to the Gold medal final would be HUGE for women's hockey!!

It would be good for womens hockey.
Melrose_Jr. 02-17-2006, 12:58 PM Very impressed with this Sweden team...as much as I like the U.S. team I think Sweden going to the Gold medal final would be HUGE for women's hockey!!
I've only been watching for about 10 minutes but the US team is making some pretty poor decisions with the puck. How many times do I have to watch the puckhandler skate INTO a defender as if they can't even see them?
Swedes are looking sharp though.
Melrose_Jr. 02-17-2006, 01:00 PM Sweden on a PP with 2:45 to go!
SammyTheBull 02-17-2006, 01:00 PM Sweden powerplay :biglaugh:
Kim Martin is doing great so far.
Quite the goaltender. I've been really impressed.
Martin and Lundqvist. Not a bad combination for Tre Kroner. ;)
UAGoalieGuy 02-17-2006, 01:02 PM The Swedish goalie is unbelievable. She is singlehandedly keep her team in it. If I remember rite she played pretty damn good in Salt Lake City in 2002 when she was what 15? If Sweeden wins this game it will be because of her
Crossroads* 02-17-2006, 01:03 PM This is a good game.

Crossroads* 02-17-2006, 01:06 PM I think the U.S. is most likely looking forward to Canada and that is the reason why they are not 100 % there, mentally.
If they get by Sweden, expect a different team in the GMG.
Nihilism 02-17-2006, 01:06 PM Timglas had the game on her stick and missed.
Americans will win OT, but the Sweds deserve a ton of credit.
The Mars Volchenkov 02-17-2006, 01:06 PM Are they bringing out the zamboni?
Draft Guru 02-17-2006, 01:07 PM Wow, this could be a HUGE upset.
Nihilism 02-17-2006, 01:08 PM If they get by Sweden, expect a different team in the GMG.

Canada has looked unstoppable all tournament long, the Americans have looked everything but.

I think the US will be better than today... but I honestly think the Canadians are playing at another level in this tourney.
Nihilism 02-17-2006, 01:10 PM First OT game in the Olympics since Canada/Czech in 98
Steadfast 02-17-2006, 01:10 PM Maybe the American women should not have held back all tournament. ;)
3 goals = chili 02-17-2006, 01:11 PM why isnt OT 4v4?? I think it makes for more interesting OT play when there is more ice, especially in international play with the bigger ice surface
John Flyers Fan 02-17-2006, 01:11 PM The US goalie looks shaky as hell.
First OT game in the Olympics since Canada/Czech in 98
Really? That's interesting.
Noutaja 02-17-2006, 01:12 PM This means that medal games will be extremely boring, Sweden will be slaughtered by Canada. And Finland can do nothing against USA who plays wothout pressures.
GuloGulo 02-17-2006, 01:12 PM why isnt OT 4v4?? I think it makes for more interesting OT play when there is more ice, especially in international play with the bigger ice surface
I don't think any OTs in elimination games are 4-4, not international and not in the NHL. Besides, these players are pretty tired right now.
Telecaster Fanatic 02-17-2006, 01:13 PM This means that medal games will be extremely boring, Sweden will be slaughtered by Canada. And Finland can do nothing against USA who plays wothout pressures.
Maybe, but it is still a progress in womens hockey if that happens.
Melrose_Jr. 02-17-2006, 01:13 PM The US goalie looks shaky as hell.
Not on that last shot! Whoa!
OMG she did not just make that save. That was the game right there.
UAGoalieGuy 02-17-2006, 01:14 PM USA goalie saved US Gold Metal chances there

Nihilism 02-17-2006, 01:16 PM I assume that a shootout favours the Americans, as far as offensive talent goes.
Tuggy 02-17-2006, 01:16 PM US team is so shaken by this situation that one can see their trembling... Unless they get lucky Sweden takes this.

I don't know but you kind of get the sense that that is how the Americans are thinking. They know they are the class of the tournament along with Canada.
Either way, go Canada go :P.
Noutaja 02-17-2006, 01:18 PM It's clear the US weren't ready for a game like this today.

To all of our Swedish members in this thread: does your country follow the women nearly as much as they do the men?

UAGoalieGuy 02-17-2006, 01:23 PM Once again this Swedish goalie is unbelievable..and the US will more then likely lose if it goes to shootout

The Mars Volchenkov 02-17-2006, 01:33 PM That was the most obvious move ever by Wendell there.

It's because smart goaltenders, like myself, slice the absolute **** out of the slot, to mess with the puck of the opposing player. If you've got the zone all to yourself you can do that without hurting your own team.

2 reasons. Cause everyone likes the underdog & for canadians, it makes for a way easier row to hoe. In fact, it virtually gaurantees Canada the gold.
someguy44 02-17-2006, 01:39 PM Wow. Go Sweden! This is the same Swedish women's team that was here last month at the hotel I work part time at. They were praticing in Calgary and I didn't expect them to beat either the Americans or the Canadians. I got to say one thing though... they ain't hot babes when you see them in casual clothing. :propeller
Phil333 02-17-2006, 01:40 PM I'm disapointed to see my fellow country men (women) lose, and I was pissed when I saw how pathetic those shootuout attempts were for Team USA. But on the bright side, this is so great for women's hockey. I would love to see Sweden upset Canada in the final.
Why is every non-American going for Sweden?

Because Women's hockey has been percieved to be between 2 countries, Canada and the US. Sweden beating the US is terrific for Women's hockey.
Its also why every non Czech fan was cheering for Switzerland in the Mens tourney as well. Its fun to cheer for the underdog.

This result is probably good for the game as a whole. Hopefully it's a signal that the Scandanavian nations are catching up, and we start to consistently see four teams that can contend for a world title. It's not going to help the Americans any right now.
Finland's a tough team. Canada knows better than to take them lightly. If Canada does underestimate them, Canada will lose. Finland led Canada 3-2 after two periods in the 2002 Olympic semi-final. When Canada won those world titles in the 1990s, they usually faced Finland in the semis, and those were generally decided by one or two goals. And if Canada does beat Finland (by no means a guarantee), they have to face an upstart Swedish team whose goalie just had the game of her life.
Didn't see the game, and I'm not as familiar with U.S. women's hockey as Canadian women's hockey. Did the U.S. take Sweden lightly? Or is this a reflection of a gap in the U.S. development pipeline, similar to what happened with the men's program for much of the 1990s?

They (US) played good, this win was all about the goalies. Kim Martin was on fire and did it all. Maria R on attack was awesome. But mostly Kim in goal, she was amazing.

I only watched a portion of the game and the shoutout so I don't know for sure but I don't think the USA took them lightly as they played hard in the 1st period. The Sweden goalie was fantastic and stole the game. Now what I don't know is how the USA played in the 2nd period when the Swedes scored twice. Mayber the STates got the lead and let it slip away I don't know. Maybe someone else could comment. Overall though the Kim Martin stole the game.

jadeddog 02-17-2006, 02:00 PM holy crap!! i went to cbc.ca and saw the headline that sweden beat the US and was SHOCKED.... now, admittedly i dont follow womens hockey *that* closely, so this might not be as big of an upset as i think it is but its still a large upset nonetheless..... cbc is calling it "sweden's miracle on ice", is this accurate? is it really as big of an upset as US-russia was?
if anything this just shows how ridiculous 1 game eliminations really are..... is ther *anybody* in the entire world who really thinks sweden would have beat the US in a 7 game series? yeah i didnt think so.... these tournaments are all fine and dandy, but they dont really prove who the better team is, they only prove who the better team on that particular day.... for me to take these results seriously, a 3 game series would have to take place at the minimum

It does not guarantee Canada anything. They need to beat Finland first. If they beat Finland then they will face a hot goalie and a team with tons of confidence. I still think Canada will win gold but it is not a guarantee. Ask the USA.

I don't claim to know alot about the U.S. women's hockey program but I thought this game was just a classic case of a hot goaltender winning a game all by herself. The Americans almost had twice as many shots on goal as Sweden did and was leading 2-1 at one point. As another poster mentioned there's not enough female players in Sweden to say that the Swedish program has caught up.

Nothing personal. Everybody loves an underdog, especially a huge underdog. It was a heck of a game. The Americans just couldn't beat a smokin' hot goaltender, and they seemed to wear down a bit at the end.

never heard of upsets? Canada has won gold in all but 1 world championship (7 golds i think) and that was the 2005 championship where they won silver... and has a gold and a silver in the 2 olympics... so that leaves the US with about 7 silvers in world championships and 1 gold... as well as 1 of each in the olympics... so yeah i think it's pretty safe to say Canada is the best women's hockey nation
usual suspects 02-17-2006, 02:07 PM You must admit that our chances just improved a great deal.

SudburyWolvesFan 02-17-2006, 02:10 PM theres nothing flukey about losing in a shootout - im watchin tv right now theyre talking about how the americans have been doing photo shoots and maybe not taking these teams seriously as the canadians have - the usa had ample opportuniy to bury the swedes during the whole 60 minutes and had ample opportunity to outshine them in the shootout and lost ....

It's pretty funny. The very people who call today's win a fluke because it was in a shootout, are the same ones who wet themselves about the 05 win and couldn't possibly admit it was a fluke as well.
U.S. outplayed Canada in last year's World Championship final. Best thing that has happened to Canada since the 2002 Olympics was losing the gold medal game to the U.S. last year, and being outplayed in the process. They've come back with renewed vigour and hunger this year.
U.S. could have easily beaten Canada several times at the Worlds. Canada had big comebacks in a couple gold medal games, and got better goaltending in a couple others. Even though the U.S. had years where they were the better team, and would beat Canada in the round-robin/pre-tournament games, Canada was generally best when it counted: the gold medal game. (Exception being the 1998 Olympics).
For whatever reason, Canada has looked stronger throughout this year's Olympics. Maybe the U.S. took the foot off the throttle in their first two games, but they were down 3-2 to Finland a couple days ago. They just haven't looked as sharp this week.
Hockeycanada* 02-17-2006, 02:22 PM Congrats Sweden! :handclap:
