Go USA! Whoo!
Getting this in here all ready for tomorrow. Hopefully the US can pull out a win after a disappointing tie.
Herby 02-16-2006, 02:27 AM USA 8
Kazahkstan 2
Osprey 02-16-2006, 04:01 AM USA 8
Kazahkstan 2That's similar to what some people predicted for USA's game against Latvia. I'd guess that the USA will win, but only by 2-3 goals (ie. convincingly, but not enough to erase doubt).
BMOK33 02-16-2006, 06:48 AM Bottom line if somehow the U.S. is embarassing the Kazs'??? (lol) after 2 periods they have to continue to do so, this may come down to a goals scored thing with Latvia.
hifk88 02-16-2006, 06:50 AM (My wild guess) USA 0 - 31 Kazahkstan ;)
(My real guess) USA 8 - 1 Kazahkstan
shawn_kemp* 02-16-2006, 06:54 AM 7-3 Usa
Rabid Husky 02-16-2006, 07:52 AM 5-2 U.s.

DevilsFan38 02-16-2006, 08:46 AM I just want a win, I'm not going to predict a score. Anyone know if DiPietro will get the start today?
Bloggins 02-16-2006, 08:47 AM USA gets their stuff together for this one. 6-0 USA :handclap:
ALF AmericanLionsFan 02-16-2006, 08:50 AM the boys will bounce back today!USA USA USA USA
Rabid Ranger 02-16-2006, 09:19 AM I'll be a man and admit I was wrong about the game against Latvia. Hopefully the U.S. learned a valuable less from yesterday's game and will play for a ful 60 minutes. I'll go 5-1 U.S.
Takeo 02-16-2006, 10:18 AM I'll say 6-2 USA.
X0ssbar 02-16-2006, 10:21 AM Just win baby! Go USA!
DevilFisch 02-16-2006, 10:22 AM I think Team USA will play all 60 minutes today instead of, oh, about the 35-40 minutes they actually played yesterday.
So I'm pulling for a U.S. win.
Kvashinator12 02-16-2006, 10:23 AM I think Dipietro will get the start today for sure.
Tuggy 02-16-2006, 10:24 AM Let's go Kazahkstan!! :yo:
...
USA should win this one easily. Probably like 7-1 or something like that.
Ar-too 02-16-2006, 10:33 AM I just can't get into USA hcokey. I gotta root for the underdog.
3-1 Kazahks
Sotnos 02-16-2006, 10:50 AM I think Dipietro will get the start today for sure.
Most everyone else rotated goalies today, so I don't think that would surprise anyone.
ALF AmericanLionsFan 02-16-2006, 10:50 AM Not that I think Grahame played poorly I just hope they go with Ricky today
Jedda 02-16-2006, 10:52 AM What's more interesting is, will Kolesnik start for Kazakhstan?
CaptainChara 02-16-2006, 11:12 AM I'm thinking 5-1 USA.
Just feels right.
NEED this game.
Let's go Rick. Put up the snow fence. :handclap:
Donnie D 02-16-2006, 11:20 AM Most everyone else rotated goalies today, so I don't think that would surprise anyone.
I'm hoping that he does rotate the goalies on these back to back games.
Takeo 02-16-2006, 11:53 AM USA 7

Another Miller post in disguise.
Another Miller post in disguise.
Nope. None of the goals will be DP/JG's fault.
Sekera44 02-16-2006, 12:32 PM I just can't get into USA hcokey. I gotta root for the underdog.
3-1 Kazahks
What kind of sick American are you? :shakehead
Thrash13 02-16-2006, 12:41 PM Well, instead of bashing the American team, I'm going to give credit to Arturs Irbe for yesterday's game. Irbe had an awesome game in net. The US should have won, and they had 42 shots on goal for the game. Give credit to Irbe for making some great stops. A lot of other goalies would have given up 6 or 7 goals yesterday.
It was disheartening, but I give credit where it's due. I don't think the US team looked all that bad.
Anyway, the US will win today by at least 3 goals. It may not be dominant, but they will win easily. I would like to see Dipietro in net just because he is my favorite of the 3 US goalies.
I'm ready for this one. Too bad I have to record it and watch it when I get home from work. :/
Sotnos 02-16-2006, 01:10 PM I don't think the US team looked all that bad.
I thought they sucked in the 2nd, personally. Today I hope they give a 60 minute effort.
Ar-too 02-16-2006, 01:15 PM What kind of sick American are you? :shakehead
I don't like our hockey team that much. What do you want from me?
Garbs 02-16-2006, 01:20 PM 5-2, Usa.
Jedda 02-16-2006, 02:17 PM If anyone does get confirmation that Kolesnik is gonna be in the net for Kazakhstan before the match starts I would really like to know, maybe some TV coverage in the US or so mentions something about it. The official olympic site doesn't have any lineups pre-game or anything like that, only the teams full rosters are being shown.
Any confirmation yet that DiPi is on goal?
Jedda 02-16-2006, 02:55 PM Just managed to find this:
1 0:00 GKS IN United States USA 29 Rick DiPietro
1 0:00 GKS IN Kazakhstan KAZ 20 Vitaliy Kolesnik
Thank god. Now Grahame can't blow it.
DP in net? Instant loss. DP sucks.
Levitate 02-16-2006, 03:04 PM DP sucks.

DevilsFan38 02-16-2006, 03:05 PM Damn, JD just said the forwards and defense are the same as yesterday, which means Rafalski isn't playing again :(
DevilFisch 02-16-2006, 03:05 PM Grahame didn't blow it yesterday. But what do I know, I only watched the whole game...
And the United States WINS the opening faceoff. I like our odds.
MEANINGLESS MASK UPDATE: Rick DiPietro's mask is my favorite looking mask I've seen so far, so detailed, so well done. Lundqvist's comes in second and Brodeur's in third..
DevilFisch 02-16-2006, 03:07 PM Bill Guerin scores to put Team USA up early!
1-0!

MEANINGLESS MASK UPDATE #2: The Kazakhstan goalie, Kolesnik (I'm sorry if I misspelled that) has an Avs-themed mask. I assume he's an Avalanche prospect? Or did he get some time up with Colorado team? Sorry I'm not up on my Colorado Avalanche roster movements this season.
Rolston! :handclap: 2-0 USA
John Davidson is still calling Conroy Knuble...lmao...
David Puddy 02-16-2006, 03:20 PM 2-0 USA. Don't think it's over now boys. We need you to run up the score for differential purposes.
DevilFisch 02-16-2006, 03:22 PM They'll get another chance, David, as USA will go on the powerplay again as Tkachuk is hooked down (Koledayev was the cuplrit?).

When the Avs were having goaltender problems Kolesnik actually was called up and played 4 or 5 games. I thought he looked pretty good, but he struggled toward the end of his stint and was sent back down.
i dunno, is it any more laughable than seeing who can run the fastest for 100 meters? or seeing who can jump the highest?
It's a lot more entertaining.
Levitate 02-16-2006, 03:29 PM It's a lot more entertaining.
watching people run really fast for 10 seconds is more entertaining than watching someone snowboard? alright then...i've always felt the summer olympics were boring as hell. i can't think of one really entertaining event in the summer olympics off the top of my head. maybe water polo
barrytrotzsneck 02-16-2006, 03:30 PM USA looks much more poised\collected this game.
Tkachuk gets high sticked, US PP

DevilFisch 02-16-2006, 03:34 PM Team USA seems to be more "collected" on defense and offense, taking their time to set up offensive and defensive plays short a few brain farts (coughHATCHERcough). I'm feeling good about this game if they continue like they have been so far this period.

Guys, this isn't either of those things. This is hockey. The game so hot that makes soccer look like fat girl in a short dress.
You don't have to cheer for anyone if you don't want to, but I think it's more than appropriate to be patriotic and cheer for your nation's team.
Now back to the game. Yep, Team USA is still dominant in this one. (Hint to Kazakhstan: Giving Team USA more power plays is a great away to ensure a loss.)
barrytrotzsneck 02-16-2006, 03:35 PM Goal!

Cheerleading Aside: Interesting outfits the cheerleaders have in Turin. Whole lot of orange.
GOAL UPDATE: Brian Gionta is credited with his 2nd goal of the tournament! LITTLE G~!

DevilFisch 02-16-2006, 03:41 PM Kolesnik with a BIG glove save on Keith Tkachuk. He just saved it from being 4-0.
AND the first period ends with Team USA ahead 3-0. Great period from Team USA, clearly much better than the effort in the Latvia game. Hopefully they'll keep it up and keep Kazakhstan out of making a comeback (no offense to Kazaks, just want to see Team USA win).

DevilFisch 02-16-2006, 04:00 PM He must have a soapbox with like six different heights, because he's at everyone's level when interviewing.
Maybe he has special boots with a hydraulics system to raise the sole (and thus his feet, making him seem taller) to adjust to other player's heights.
USA continues to go ahead on to win in the 2nd period, as they have another (their...fourth?) PP early on.
Kvashinator12 02-16-2006, 04:01 PM glad to see Tkachuk and Guerin decided to join the team.

Tkachuk has been USA's best player.

Tkachuk has Dick Cheney's Shooting Accuracy.
DevilFisch 02-16-2006, 04:06 PM And Kazakhstan's only offensive chance this period was their player coming out of the box to a breakaway, which DiPietro steps out to cut the angle and easily prevent the chance. Leading, of course, to another Team USA shot.

DevilFisch 02-16-2006, 04:15 PM Bret Hedican is called for hooking, so Kazakhstan will be on the power play for a change.
Is Tkachuk OK? I thought I saw him look in pain on the bench? Nevermind, he looks OK now.
Big Daddy 02-16-2006, 04:17 PM Where did Team Usa get their gear? The Garanimal PJ store?

They need to start finishing.
David Puddy 02-16-2006, 04:24 PM If the refs called everything against Kazakhstan that they could, Team USA would be skating 5-3 for most of the game.
DevilFisch 02-16-2006, 04:26 PM They need to start finishing.
I agree this PP is looking more and more like the NJ Devils '03-04 power play: Just poor.
The period ends. It would be nice if Team USA made more of an effort on those power plays, but they're still up 3-0 and still dictating the pace of the game.
DevilsFan38 02-16-2006, 04:35 PM Man, I go to physics lab, and I miss the second two goals. Hopefully they show the highlights later.
Sounds like USA is looking good, but they need to keep scoring to get that goal differential up.

DevilFisch 02-16-2006, 04:51 PM Chelios draws a penalty for power play #9 (I think).
Time to put this game away, Team USA. As JD just said, if Kazakhstan gets a goal somehow, this game immediately becomes different.
David Puddy 02-16-2006, 04:56 PM How is that a penalty on Tkachuk?
DevilFisch 02-16-2006, 04:57 PM Uh, interesting call. A big hit, but he had the puck and the Kazakhstan player saw it coming. But he's getting called for, I'm guessing, roughing? Regardless, he sits for 2 minutes.
Kazakhstan goes on the power play.

DevilFisch 02-16-2006, 04:59 PM Uh oh, Kazakhstan makes the most out of that power play and scores with about 9 minutes to go.
3-1.
Time to turn on the scoring mentality, Team USA. Boost that goal differential.

DevilsFan38 02-16-2006, 05:14 PM Woohoo! We get a much needed win. Who do you think we'll see in goal next game - DiPietro or Grahame?
Meaningless aside: not only do I like DiPietro's mask, I also LOVE his pads.
DevilFisch 02-16-2006, 05:16 PM Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand Team USA wins 4-1. Would have been nice if Team USA scored a few more goals on those 9 or 10 power plays; but I'm not going to complain. Everyone played well, played hard, and-most importantly-won the game.
For Saturday: Bring it on, Slovakia!!!
David Puddy 02-16-2006, 05:18 PM Who would you guys go with in goal versus Slovakia? I am leaning towards the Dip. This wasn't much of a challange, and the one goal allowed wasn't his fault.
I think DiPietro is capable of playing with a lot of emotion.

King Henry I 02-16-2006, 07:49 PM Good bounce back game from the US. They didn't try to go and blow Kazakhstan out just to make a big splash--they just protected the goalie and made enough plays to win. That's all they need to do.
Who starts the next game? Whoever performs better in practice. On the one hand DiPietro did win while Grahame gave up 3 goals in a tie, but on the other hand DiPietro was protected much better and playing against an inferior team.
Laviolette should play it by ear.
Blades of Glory 02-16-2006, 08:03 PM Neither Grahame nor DiPietro earned the starting job, but I'd give it to DiPietro just because he came out and got a win. How he did it, and how Grahame lost, doesn't matter. Give the job to the hot goalie.
Screw Ryan Miller. He's a great goalie, he should be in Torino, and starting, but he's not on the team. I was a big Miller apologist, but I've accepted the fact that DiPietro and Grahame and Esche are our goalies. We will go as far as they take us, which could be to Gold ( :biglaugh: ) or 6th place.
MissionHockey 02-16-2006, 08:33 PM Buffalo is losing this year? We're winning and we are exciting, double bonus.
Gionta Western New York native and Sabs fan gotta love him.
I think he means Buffalo in general, especially the Bills...

I'd give the job to DiPietro because of his mentality. He's always gung ho and love the spot light on him. Who else do you want in a shoot out?

You think that was what he meant. I was going to place a bet that that wasn't what he meant but I couldn't find a New Jersey state trooper.
CREW99AW 02-16-2006, 10:01 PM Not an exciting game, but the US got the needed win.
with back to back games coming up,both Grahame and DiPietro should be able to get a start this weekend.Let them push each other.

And they will no doubt each get a start, then we'll have a better idea of what we're dealing with. Funny how the only people not ready to jump whole heartedly on the DiPietro bandwagon are Isles fans. I applaud you guys for showing objectivity and caring about the team instead of concentrating on ripping on someone. :)
MissionHockey 02-17-2006, 12:13 AM I'm pretty sure we can all agree that Dipietro's season has been less than stellar, but IMO he will eventually be the mainstay for team USA.

I think with Dipietro, Miller and Montoya the US should be in good shape in net for awhile

I chalk it up less to objectivity and more to an intense inferiority complex/dislike of all things related to Mike Milbury, including DiPietro, but in any case I like to be flattered :)
DiPietro really has been excellent in stretches for the Islanders. He's also had some really bad games and quite possibly the worst defense in hockey in front of him. Beating Kazakhstan was the least we could've expected from him, and it's now up to him to prove that he deserves to start again. Grahame certainly didn't prove that he deserves to be benched, so Ricky has his work cut out for him.
The fact that he is in all likelihood the future of American hockey in goal is irrelevant. If he practices hard and continues to play well he starts, and if he doesn't he has to wait until Vancouver, plain and simple.
