Typical of the expected double standards in these games...they want the better/more powerful teams to win so they are in the later stages and they draw crowds, so the refs are always refereeing two different games at the same time out there. Tough on the Swiss and easy on the Czechs until the Czechs win

Well they played not so well on World-cup round robin, but won some northern country(they wear yellow and blue, you guess who) in the POs. This could be their Olympic plan?

Swiss should have gotten a penalty shot on that one play towards the end of the second.

Looked like a pretty clear breakaway and he got hooked first and then tripped at the end.

I've seen far more marginal partial breakaway penalties called penalty shots in the NHL this year.

Great game from the Swiss. They played for the win and got it. In the last few minutes they were really tired but they still managed to stress the Czechs from setting up plays and Aebi took care of business when it mattered. Upset #2 of the tournament so far.

Exactly mate, these games only count for the minnows hoping to sneak in a spot, or the only team in a real pickle at the moment is USA (because, they still have to play Sweden, Slovakia, Russia after Kazakhstan tonight, the same teams Latvia have to play and it seems they will be decided by a tie breaker, if the scores go as expected...but i'm sure something will pull USA in. But yeah its just speculation as are all my predictions. But lets hope for more exciting upsets like this one by the Swiss to make it more interesting!

I am tempted to agree. And i do agree with your comment that they might struggle tonight, and thus may end up in 3rd or so of their division...but that doesnt mean that later they wont be ready. they have a tough spot tonight, after a quite physical game last night.

He had some great chances today, Aebischer just stoned him. He is getting his chances, they just aren't going into the net. But in all honesty...he has looked much better the last few weeks than he did in the beginning of the season.

2) Germany loses to Canada and Finland and beats Switzerland;

3) and everyone beats Italy;

then three teams finish in a tie for third: Czech Republic, Switzerland and Germany.

The next tiebreaker would be head-to-head record among those teams, which would be also be a three-way tie. The next tiebreaker after that is head-to-head goal-differential, and Germany is already behind the eight-ball there with the three-goal loss to CR (bet they regret pulling Kolzig at the end now). Right now, the Czechs are +2 in goal differential, Switzerland is +1, and Germany is -3. So to clinch a spot, the Germans would need to beat the Swiss by at least three goals. If they beat them by two, it would put the teams into a tie for head-to-head goal differential. I'm not sure what the next tiebreaker is. Overall goal differential?

The next tiebreaker would be head-to-head record among those teams, which would be also be a three-way tie. The next tiebreaker after that is head-to-head goal-differential, and Germany is already behind the eight-ball there with the three-goal loss to CR (bet they regret pulling Kolzig at the end now). Right now, the Czechs are +2 in goal differential, Switzerland is +1, and Germany is -3. So to clinch a spot, the Germans would need to beat the Swiss by at least three goals. If they beat them by two, it would put the teams into a tie for head-to-head goal differential. I'm not sure what the next tiebreaker is. Overall goal differential?

Ok, thats right. But I really don't believe that the Czechs doesn't make any ponit against Canada and Finland. They will wake up after that loss against the swiss and wants rehabilitate.
I am sure when Germany beats Switzerland and Italy we will be in the quarterfinals.

As long as the Czechs still make the next round, it's relatively insignificant, although they may have a harder road to the final.

Over the past 6 or 7 years, the Czechs have been just as dominant on the international scene as Canada, and not someone with a team of only a few NHL players beat them in a best-on-best tournament.

Well I bet the IIHF and IOC are glad that this became a real tournament unlike the last 2 where the lesser countries didn't even get to play the real teams.

Surprise, I thought the Czech's looked good yesterday. Anything can happen in these games. Nothing can be taken for granted.

Maybe Czechs needed some of that strong Italian coffee. Guess we'll see how they respond against Finland.

it's always tough to play against swiss and germany. they have nothing to lose. i haven't seen the game but their style of hockey + often very good goaltending makes problem for offensive teams like czechs.

not a huge thing, except for suisse. they played really well.

w/o spacek's Horrible turnover right in front of vokoun, and/or if someone had actually got the puck after spacek's hit on paterlini(?) czechs would have won.

why were the czechs refusing to dump and chase? even when suisse had 4 on the blueline, they tried to carry in, even on PP. big waste.

straka and jagr and vokoun are best czechs. other lines don't do much. lang looks bad. looks like that a lot in NHL, but still scores......

The problem was anywhere but not about Jagr.

I don't give credit to the Swiss..they didn't impress me much. They still got totally outshot and totally dominated..if Abischer hadn't played the game of his life it woulda been a blowout for the Czechs. Czech Republic is just getting warmed up and it makes no difference where you finnish you still gotta beat the best to win..this round robin is just formal crap. And Jagr was amazing, played like a monster...The swiss can thank Abischer for this one!

Well, Jágr had birthday the day before this match. I guess the party was so lively, that they were a bit exhausted to play against Swiss ;)

Good that the party was two days ago and won't take place in the quarterfinals or later.

The Czechs obviously expected the Swiss to be overawed. I had to laugh at the many times in which a Czech had the puck and a Swiss just sailed by and took it away from him. It almost seemed as if some Czech players thought that the Swiss wouldn't dare take back the puck once it was in their posession. That happened an awful lot in the first period, and the first goal was the result of an action like that. And, don't blame Vokoun, defence just left him alone. Not a Czech near Ziegler...

The shorthander was also a great example of how the Czechs underestimated the 'little' Swiss. Thought a check would do it. Maybe even thought Paterlini would just stay down and lie there till the powerplay ended. Instead, the guy got up and scored. Five Czech players grouped around one Swiss, and only one of them making a move to get the puck!

This team has to wake up!
