barrytrotzsneck 02-16-2006, 04:09 AM what's the deal with the coverage? MSNBC has this game as well as like 5 jillion other games listed at the same time...on the same channel. Do they just flip back and forth between the games?
TheRedressor 02-16-2006, 06:25 AM I hope its not like that. I really want to watch all of the games not just flipping back and forth
mattihp 02-16-2006, 07:38 AM 3-1 Czech Republic
Jenni starts the scoring for the swiss...
Jágr x2
Lang
TheRedressor 02-16-2006, 07:47 AM 7-2 Czech Republic
Jagr 2
Hedjuk
Lang
Straka
Spacek
Vyborny
daikan 02-16-2006, 08:06 AM Whoa, that could easily have been 1-0 for Switzerland. Pretty high pace so far.. :handclap:
daikan 02-16-2006, 08:12 AM Wow, 1-0 Switzerland! :amazed:
shawn_kemp* 02-16-2006, 08:12 AM OMG Jagr's line was totally outplayed by the Swiss. They spent the entire shift trapped in their own end. And on the next shift the Swiss open the score!!!! 1-0
TheRedressor 02-16-2006, 08:24 AM Czechs look sloppy. If theres one sure thing about Jaromir Jagr it's that he has an amazing ability to adapt to situations. Watch he'll make a sweet move aound an in exp d man.
GuloGulo 02-16-2006, 08:30 AM Czechs never have dominate games to win... which every team should know by now. Swiss will have to score another and try to get the Czechs frustrated, then they have a chance. 1 goal leads are so fragile against a team that just waits for a bad pass to strike :teach:
Edit: whoa it was close the SWISS got a freebie there!
chiavsfan 02-16-2006, 08:30 AM Who is in net for the Swiss Cheese? Aebi or Gerber?
daikan 02-16-2006, 08:31 AM Who is in net for the Swiss Cheese? Aebi or Gerber?
Aebischer.
Almost 2-0 there.
Is Aebischer in net or is it Gerber for the Swiss?
EDIT: oops nevermind
Piggymon 02-16-2006, 08:33 AM Switzerland will definitively need another one before intermission if they want to survive the inevidable second period wakeup. A real strong game from them so far, much like Germany yesterday.
Kaizer 02-16-2006, 08:35 AM Switzerland looks like a perfect coached team so far and Aebi has cool mask :)
BlackLabel 02-16-2006, 08:35 AM WOW. 1-0 Switzerland after the 1st period.
shawn_kemp* 02-16-2006, 08:36 AM Switzerland is playing extremely well! I'm surprised they didn't actually double up the lead!!!
:handclap:
chiavsfan 02-16-2006, 08:36 AM Some of the goalies get a personalized country mask...other I have noticed wearing their NHL ones..
Kaizer 02-16-2006, 08:40 AM Yes, Aebi has cool red mask with bloody monster on his face and nice "Aebi" written in the style of mask on the back side.
Piggymon 02-16-2006, 08:41 AM Switzerland is playing extremely well! I'm surprised they didn't actually double up the lead!!!
:handclap:
And now the Czechs say "what the hell was that?" and dominate the second, poor Switzerland who worked so hard!
TheRedressor 02-16-2006, 08:46 AM And now the Czechs say "what the hell was that?" and dominate the second, poor Switzerland who worked so hard!
Most likely situation.
shawn_kemp* 02-16-2006, 08:50 AM Most likely situation.
Obviously.
Let's see if that happens, and how it happens! :yo:
Olympic hockey rules!!!!!!!!!!!
Wild GM 02-16-2006, 08:53 AM And now the Czechs say "what the hell was that?" and dominate the second, poor Switzerland who worked so hard!
Which is exactly what the US thought yesterday.
daikan 02-16-2006, 08:55 AM 1-1
Jagr
devsjunkie 02-16-2006, 08:55 AM Jagr just scored ...
And Elias still out... I missed the beginning of the game, did anyone say why? Probably not.
Kaizer 02-16-2006, 08:55 AM No goalie in the world couldn't stop that shot.
GuloGulo 02-16-2006, 08:55 AM And there it is, garbage goal.
Poor swiss. They have been well as good/better than Czechs all game long. Even played good possession game most of the time. And then this happens.. grr!
Edit: A few minutes ago I was going to write "Jagr won't allow the team to lose".
Piggymon 02-16-2006, 08:56 AM Which is exactly what the US thought yesterday.
Fine for the US, but the Cze-Ger game went EXACTLY like this.
And there we are, Jagr scores.
Of course a lesser team COULD hold on, but the pattern is clear; the second period sucks for the B-teams. The other team wakes up, scores a goal or two and crushes their spirit.
Kaizer 02-16-2006, 08:56 AM Perfect save by Aebi on Hejduk
TheRedressor 02-16-2006, 08:58 AM Wow what a pass by Straka. Czech Republic really benefiting off of Straka and Jagr so far.
DevilsFan38 02-16-2006, 09:04 AM And Elias still out... I missed the beginning of the game, did anyone say why? Probably not.
Anyone? I was wondering the same thing.
Aebeischer has a sweeeet mask.
shawn_kemp* 02-16-2006, 09:06 AM Jagr is the only one really trying to score.
And Switzerland keeps coming into the Czech zone!
Kaizer 02-16-2006, 09:07 AM SH GOAL by Switzerland !!! Wow!!!
TheRedressor 02-16-2006, 09:07 AM Get Spacek off the ice
GuloGulo 02-16-2006, 09:07 AM What an effort!!!!
Kaizer 02-16-2006, 09:07 AM Paterlini
shawn_kemp* 02-16-2006, 09:08 AM Goal Of The Tournament!!!!!!!!!
What a goal by Paterlini! :handclap:
go kim johnsson 514 02-16-2006, 09:08 AM Goal Of The Tournament!!!!!!!!!
:yo:
GuloGulo 02-16-2006, 09:09 AM Goal Of The Tournament!!!!!!!!!
Amen to that! This are the kind of goals the B-nations so desperately need in order to compete! :handclap:
Wild GM 02-16-2006, 09:12 AM Of course a lesser team COULD hold on, but the pattern is clear; the second period sucks for the B-teams. The other team wakes up, scores a goal or two and crushes their spirit.
2-1 Swiss.
shawn_kemp* 02-16-2006, 09:13 AM Short handed power play for the Czechs LOL
mikkoz 02-16-2006, 09:16 AM You cant touch Jagr????
shawn_kemp* 02-16-2006, 09:17 AM was that a bad call?
shawn_kemp* 02-16-2006, 09:19 AM fire this stupid referee!!!
DimaNYR 02-16-2006, 09:21 AM Elias had a "ribcage" injury, I heard yesterday on TV.... shouldn't be nothing serious
calgarylen13 02-16-2006, 09:21 AM fire this stupid referee!!!
GO TEAM COOL VIBES!!!!
shawn_kemp* 02-16-2006, 09:21 AM Aebischer = God
daikan 02-16-2006, 09:22 AM Aebischer is playing great now!
mikkoz 02-16-2006, 09:22 AM I thought the Swiss guy just put his but on Jaromirs hips, and he had the puck.
DevilsFan38 02-16-2006, 09:22 AM Elias had a "ribcage" injury, I heard yesterday on TV.... shouldn't be nothing serious
Thanks for the info, hopefully he just needs a day or two off and he'll be back for the next game.
shawn_kemp* 02-16-2006, 09:23 AM Aebischer really is God!
GuloGulo 02-16-2006, 09:23 AM Man the Swiss are getting pinned down. The helmet call wasn't bad imo, but it was in an inappropriate moment for the Swiss. Aebischer plays like there was no tomorrow. Team Coo Coo clock has heart(tm)!
RuuhkaTukka 02-16-2006, 09:24 AM Switzerland is playing with big heart! Great to see them give a big effort and force Czech to play their best game. Aebischer looks like the alps.
GO SWITZERLAND GO!
SChan* 02-16-2006, 09:24 AM nice dive by the czech player :shakehead
go kim johnsson 514 02-16-2006, 09:27 AM They should tell McNab to stay downstairs and be the bus boy because Staider is doing a better job by himself
daikan 02-16-2006, 09:27 AM Swiss PP now.
Kaizer 02-16-2006, 09:27 AM another dive
calgarylen13 02-16-2006, 09:27 AM nice dive by the czech player :shakehead
Typical of the expected double standards in these games...they want the better/more powerful teams to win so they are in the later stages and they draw crowds, so the refs are always refereeing two different games at the same time out there. Tough on the Swiss and easy on the Czechs until the Czechs win
shawn_kemp* 02-16-2006, 09:28 AM who the hell is this stupid referee??? how did he get here???
Jeez
TheRedressor 02-16-2006, 09:30 AM The Czechs need to orginize their PP. on that 5 on 3 Jagr should have been on the right point with Kaberle feeding him the puck. You know similar to the Kaberle to McCabe thing on the Leafs. Also Robert Lang is playing like crap.
Kaizer 02-16-2006, 09:30 AM Dennis Larue
go kim johnsson 514 02-16-2006, 09:33 AM Well, before the Swiss believed they could win....now they know they can win. Hopefully the officiating evens out but I doubt it.
endacka 02-16-2006, 09:34 AM The ref is terrible in this game, as are our forwards.
swisdan 02-16-2006, 09:36 AM The referee does'nt help the swiss squad. Marvellous Abby and very good swiss PK.
And awesome goal by Paterlini. Paterlini is usualy a check lineplayer... but wow, great dribbling between 2 Czechs after his goal.
20 minutes to hold for in front of Jagr and Co. The swiss team deserve at least one point in this game.
And Jagr is hot. I think he'll score in the third...
TheRedressor 02-16-2006, 09:37 AM I see Jagr gettin 2 PPG in the third
4-2 Czech
DimaNYR 02-16-2006, 09:39 AM wow Jagr with 7 SOG? should be more then 1G by now :sarcasm:
mikkoz 02-16-2006, 09:40 AM As are our forwards.
Well they played not so well on World-cup round robin, but won some northern country(they wear yellow and blue, you guess who) in the POs. This could be their Olympic plan?
McDonald19 02-16-2006, 09:41 AM Swiss should have gotten a penalty shot on that one play towards the end of the second.
Looked like a pretty clear breakaway and he got hooked first and then tripped at the end.
I've seen far more marginal partial breakaway penalties called penalty shots in the NHL this year.
TheRedressor 02-16-2006, 09:41 AM wow Jagr with 7 SOG? should be more then 1G by now :sarcasm:
Hes the only foward doing anything besides Straka.
Lang has been terrible, Rucinsky has been awful.
They desperatley could use Elias right now.
shawn_kemp* 02-16-2006, 09:44 AM This game is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even the refs' numerous attempts to ruin it failed so far!!!
DimaNYR 02-16-2006, 09:44 AM Hes the only foward doing anything besides Straka.
I love my Rangers! :D
TheRedressor 02-16-2006, 09:46 AM Zidlicky!!!!!!!!!!!!!
go kim johnsson 514 02-16-2006, 09:47 AM 2-2
calgarylen13 02-16-2006, 09:48 AM Zidlicky!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The inevitable...it was only time before it happened unfortauntely, and thats no downer to the Swiss, they deserve the game...the ref would never let the upset happen.
go kim johnsson 514 02-16-2006, 09:52 AM pp swiss
TheRedressor 02-16-2006, 09:53 AM The inevitable...it was only time before it happened unfortauntely, and thats no downer to the Swiss, they deserve the game...the ref would never let the upset happen.
despite the ref's effort it hasn't helped the czechs yet.
Swiss is goin on the PP now
GuloGulo 02-16-2006, 09:54 AM Swiss still playing for the win! Wonderful to see! :handclap:
Once they get out off the PK circus they are completely on pace with the Czechs. Their transition and passing is _good_.
Edit: the ice is still not so good in that venue... you saw how the puck just stopped in the corner and let to the turnover?
Hemsky4PM 02-16-2006, 09:54 AM Is there anywhere on-line to get a blow by blow account of this game...or at least good scoring updates?
Kaizer 02-16-2006, 09:55 AM 3-2 Switzerland
TheRedressor 02-16-2006, 09:55 AM Wow Vokun is not lookin too good
DevilsFan38 02-16-2006, 09:55 AM Swiss score on the PP. I've been impressed with them.
go kim johnsson 514 02-16-2006, 09:55 AM Bob Gainey is shaking his head right now. Streit never has a laser like that for the Habs
:handclap: :handclap: :handclap: :propeller
mikkoz 02-16-2006, 09:56 AM Mark Streit.

thanks
Piggymon 02-16-2006, 10:00 AM Czechs making me eat my words, and I don't think Vokoun allowing goals like that is going to cut it in the finals.
go kim johnsson 514 02-16-2006, 10:01 AM How much time left?
like 13 minutes.
This Swiss need this game more than the Czechs, the Czechs will still be #1 in the pool if they beat Canada, whereas if the Swiss win, a tie vs. Germany will suffice because everyone is going to beat Italy.
RuuhkaTukka 02-16-2006, 10:10 AM 6 minutes to go. Aebischer is playing great. Gotta love the Swiss. They fight so hard!
GO SWISS GO!
bleuer 02-16-2006, 10:10 AM 5 mins...
devsjunkie 02-16-2006, 10:12 AM Here's an Elias update for those who want more than the commentators to notice three full periods after Patrik stopped playing that he was missing.
It's from a Czech source at Hockey Rodent via njdevs.com forums:
It is actually a rib injury, it does not sound too serious.
In 1st period he blocked the shot and then he was crosschecked. I apologize but I have no idea what the proper vocabularies are. It is very complicated to describe these things in English.
The muscle between Patrik's ribcages is sprained. Doctors ordered one day of rest for Patty. Patrik said that he felt same today as he did yesterday after the game. It means that the pain is not bigger but it is not better.
He should play next game. Even if he miss next game his injury is not serious. NJ fans can be calm.
ha ha this olympics are something spezial thats for sure :yo:
The Czechs looking bad, where is the powerhouse ? :dunno:

The teams to beat in this tournament:
Russia...well Slovakia already beat them
Finland...always underrated and should be in the gold medal game to lose to Russia
Sweden...always strong, until someone tells them they could go home next game...then they like the idea of returning to the Swedish chicks
Hemsky4PM 02-16-2006, 10:14 AM The Czechs could miss out on the medal round if they lose this game. Wow.
GuloGulo 02-16-2006, 10:14 AM ha ha this olympics are something spezial thats for sure :yo:
The Czechs looking bad, where is the powerhouse ? :dunno:
Usually you'll the powerhouse in a few days when it's elimination games. I never count the Czechs out until they are in fact out of the tournament for real.
Qui Gon Dave 02-16-2006, 10:15 AM Bob Gainey is shaking his head right now. Streit never has a laser like that for the Habs
Can't see the game so i dont know how Streit is playing, but Habs fans know he has a good shot from the point, most times though it seems to hit the nearest member of the other team or go wide. On the odd occassion, it gets saved or deflected in front and he gets an assist. Be interesting to see if he is given another chance after the break in Montreal if he has a good tournament.
Wild GM 02-16-2006, 10:15 AM The teams to beat in this tournament:

No Canada, huh?
Vikke 02-16-2006, 10:16 AM Jagr had a pretty good scoring chance a second ago.
Aebi's looking good.
ranger108218 02-16-2006, 10:16 AM ***? Did anyone else just hear that when the czech was being pinned by the swiss player

CBJ 97 61 16 02-16-2006, 10:17 AM Is Vyborny playing? He wasn't listed on the roster on ESPN. I really really hope he's not hurt.
Vikke 02-16-2006, 10:17 AM 1 left, Vokoun's still in the net.
GoneAway 02-16-2006, 10:18 AM Nope

go kim johnsson 514 02-16-2006, 10:18 AM Lang = pwn3d by Benzina
daikan 02-16-2006, 10:18 AM Seriously, if Aebischer plays like he did today in the NHL playoffs, Colorado have a great shot at the cup.
Vikke 02-16-2006, 10:18 AM Whoa, that was close.
Czech penalty with 30ish left.
Mules 02-16-2006, 10:19 AM Seriously, if Aebischer plays like he did today in the NHL playoffs, Colorado have a great shot at the cup.
Well, it wasn't the goalie we have problem with..it is the D. Our D sucks.
calgarylen13 02-16-2006, 10:19 AM why not?
as I don't consider them a "team to beat"...they aren't as strong as they seem, though I do believe they will go through their group in first, they'll be jumped in the quarters.
shakes 02-16-2006, 10:19 AM why not?
Seriously, do you really care?
Vikke 02-16-2006, 10:19 AM Congrats to Switzerland! :)

Well, he sure will have confidence, and now just ended and Streit has the biggest goal in Swiss history.
Holy ****, they did it!!! 3-2 Swiss
OilerOlli* 02-16-2006, 10:20 AM gameover...congrats to swiss

GuloGulo 02-16-2006, 10:21 AM Great game from the Swiss. They played for the win and got it. In the last few minutes they were really tired but they still managed to stress the Czechs from setting up plays and Aebi took care of business when it mattered. Upset #2 of the tournament so far.
calgarylen13 02-16-2006, 10:21 AM WOO HOO!
Clap your hands oh clap your hands!
Celebrate oh celebrate! Everybody lets Celebrate!
Switzerland 2004, Piero Estoire!
More of these games will be nice!
showing hockey exists outside the NHL, teams like Latvija, Switzerland
Tuggy 02-16-2006, 10:21 AM :biglaugh: Czech's lose!
TheRedressor 02-16-2006, 10:21 AM Robert Lang should not be captain of this team. What a terrible game. Vokun was horrible.
Only guys that played well were:
Jagr
Straka
Hemsky
Rucinsky
Zidlicky
Kaberle
Spacek's stupidity cost them the game.
shawn_kemp* 02-16-2006, 10:21 AM FANTASTIC!!!
I love la SUISSE!!!!!!!!!
daikan 02-16-2006, 10:22 AM Well, it wasn't the goalie we have problem with..it is the D. Our D sucks.
Swiss D isn't exactly that great either, although they do play a pretty defensive game, with forwards backchecking hard and stuff.
Anyways, what an effort. Congrats to Switzerland!
Abisher is the man :handclap:
Way to go Aebi
Can't wait to watch this game when I get home from work.
go kim johnsson 514 02-16-2006, 10:22 AM Well I bet the IIHF and IOC are glad that this became a real tournament unlike the last 2 where the lesser countries didn't even get to play the real teams.
Raimo Sillanpää 02-16-2006, 10:22 AM whoa, first upset
Congrats to the Swiss
Leo Naphta 02-16-2006, 10:22 AM And Switzerland becomes the 3rd country to beat a big7-team in a best on best!
devsjunkie 02-16-2006, 10:23 AM Is Vyborny playing? He wasn't listed on the roster on ESPN. I really really hope he's not hurt.
Yes, he played.
Wild GM 02-16-2006, 10:23 AM I hate having to work and miss these games.
Screw it, I'm outta here at lunch to watch Greiss beat Canada (Ok...wishful thinking as a Sharks fan) and the US game.
MOGiLNY 02-16-2006, 10:23 AM Czechs lost to Switzerland?!
Suddenly, I feel slightly better about my team losing to Slovakia
psycho_dad 02-16-2006, 10:23 AM Congrats Switzerland! And thanks from Finland ;)
chiavsfan 02-16-2006, 10:24 AM Well, it wasn't the goalie we have problem with..it is the D. Our D sucks.
Uhhh...no, it was the goalie. He was giving up soft goal after soft goal, even when the D played good. Since his December benchings, he has been a different goalie, night in and night out.

I though the same. But if we loose tonignt ...hmmmm it will be very difficult to come back :teach:
Mules 02-16-2006, 10:26 AM Uhhh...no, it was the goalie. He was giving up soft goal after soft goal, even when the D played good. Since his December benchings, he has been a different goalie, night in and night out.
All right, I forgot to say that our D who has problems lately. But you are right, Aebi didn't play too well in December.
Now, can they please put Gerber back in the next game? We need Aebi for the playoff push in March.
MOGiLNY 02-16-2006, 10:26 AM :dunce:
is that an insult at me? :(
go kim johnsson 514 02-16-2006, 10:26 AM I though the same. But if we loose tonignt ...hmmmm it will be very difficult to come back :teach:
Russia will be fine as long as they beat Latvia
Le Tricolore 02-16-2006, 10:27 AM WOW. I just got up, and this is hard to believe, haha. Go Swiss, go Streit!
MOGiLNY 02-16-2006, 10:28 AM I though the same. But if we loose tonignt ...hmmmm it will be very difficult to come back :teach:
Yeah for sure.
I'd write more, but let's keep this thread at the Czechs-Swiss topic.. :P
chiavsfan 02-16-2006, 10:29 AM All right, I forgot to say that our D who has problems lately. But you are right, Aebi didn't play too well in December.
Now, can they please put Gerber back in the next game? We need Aebi for the playoff push in March.
I said the same...if this current "posessed" Aebi doesn't come back to the NHL this way, I may have to punch him
Budaj also played well yesterday though...so our goalie situation looks good
SwisshockeyAcademy 02-16-2006, 10:30 AM I am even more disgusted now that this game was not on in Canada. Great win and after yesterdays game V Finland I would not have predicted this.
TheRedressor 02-16-2006, 10:30 AM Today really showed that the Czechs need Patrick Elias.
Also Milan Hedjuk needs to get going.
calgarylen13 02-16-2006, 10:30 AM Russia will be fine as long as they beat Latvia
and Kazakhstan...but neither should be a problem for that Russian offence, Slovakia was a suprise, but I level it with Sweden vs Canada last olympics, watch the Russians clean up from here (but perhaps be in a struggle tonight)
Hemsky4PM 02-16-2006, 10:32 AM I recind my previous post that the Czechs might miss out on the medal round. I thought there were byes in this sucker, but no. So they just have to finish in the top 4 to get to the quarters. Italy and Germany should still be the odd guys out in group A. The Swiss will likely finish 3-2 in the round robin. Will the Swiss now hold a tie breaker on the Czechs, or is goals for or goal differential the first tie-breaker?

Afaik Finland beat Russia last time around too.. and it still ended with Russian medal. These round robin games are really not good barometers. You basically need one win and one tie to get to playoffs, and then all the preliminary games are void of meaning. But ok, we haven't got anythin to talk about if we disregard these games so.. I guess we have to speculate :sarcasm:
that was a great game after the bad one yesterday :) Yeahhhhhhhhhhh :yo:
I don't think the Swiss played that bad yesterday. They just got steamrolled by a better team.

How much of this game did CBC show? I just turned the TV on and caught the final 10 seconds....

RuuhkaTukka 02-16-2006, 10:34 AM I´m really happy for the Swiss. They seem to be in the same position Finnish team was earlier. So close but still so far. I hope this win gives them more confidence and they will someday become part of big 8!
:handclap:

Exactly mate, these games only count for the minnows hoping to sneak in a spot, or the only team in a real pickle at the moment is USA (because, they still have to play Sweden, Slovakia, Russia after Kazakhstan tonight, the same teams Latvia have to play and it seems they will be decided by a tie breaker, if the scores go as expected...but i'm sure something will pull USA in. But yeah its just speculation as are all my predictions. But lets hope for more exciting upsets like this one by the Swiss to make it more interesting!

I am tempted to agree. And i do agree with your comment that they might struggle tonight, and thus may end up in 3rd or so of their division...but that doesnt mean that later they wont be ready. they have a tough spot tonight, after a quite physical game last night.
Did anyone record this game (onto VHS or DVD, NTSC or PAL). Please contact me, I would like to get a copy of this game...

It's not of the same magnitude.
Round-robin games don't have the same significance.
As long as the Czechs still make the next round, it's relatively insignificant, although they may have a harder road to the final.

3rd is enough...and enough to draw a sub-par team from the other side of the draw...the Czechs? or Canada? or Finland? All of which Russia can/will beat (I believe). Just gotta wait for these games to pass, then anything can happen.
bleuer 02-16-2006, 10:46 AM It doesn't matter, in the end Germany beats Swiss and Italy and so Germany will be in the quarterfinals and Switzerland not! :p:

chiavsfan 02-16-2006, 10:47 AM Also Milan Hedjuk needs to get going.
He had some great chances today, Aebischer just stoned him. He is getting his chances, they just aren't going into the net. But in all honesty...he has looked much better the last few weeks than he did in the beginning of the season.
Golden Slumbers 02-16-2006, 10:50 AM This made me smile, good for the Swiss!
They proved that hard work and team play can do a world of good, even against Jagr and co. See what happens when Hasek gets injured?! :sarcasm:
swisdan 02-16-2006, 10:50 AM today, i'm proud being a swiss! ;)
Good game from each teams. Awesome job by Aebischer and Jagr, the 2 stars of the game.
After the disappointement of the game vs Finland. It's good seeing a good play by Switzerland.
Abby or Tinu Gerber vs Canada?
Ho Gainey! Look the job making by Streit!

who said it was of the same magnitude? But I bet for swiss hockey this means a lot. I am happy :handclap:
Douggy 02-16-2006, 10:52 AM This is a big win for the Swiss.
The Swiss, Germans and Czechs are all on equal footing in this group now.
Assuming every team beats Italy, the Czechs need to beat Canada or Finland and hope the Swiss and Germans don't if they want to be the 3rd seed in this group.
Snap Wilson 02-16-2006, 10:54 AM It doesn't matter, in the end Germany beats Swiss and Italy and so Germany will be in the quarterfinals and Switzerland not! :p:
Not so fast. If:
1) the Czechs lose to both Canada and Finland (a real possibility);
2) Germany loses to Canada and Finland and beats Switzerland;
3) and everyone beats Italy;
then three teams finish in a tie for third: Czech Republic, Switzerland and Germany.
The next tiebreaker would be head-to-head record among those teams, which would be also be a three-way tie. The next tiebreaker after that is head-to-head goal-differential, and Germany is already behind the eight-ball there with the three-goal loss to CR (bet they regret pulling Kolzig at the end now). Right now, the Czechs are +2 in goal differential, Switzerland is +1, and Germany is -3. So to clinch a spot, the Germans would need to beat the Swiss by at least three goals. If they beat them by two, it would put the teams into a tie for head-to-head goal differential. I'm not sure what the next tiebreaker is. Overall goal differential?
swisdan 02-16-2006, 10:57 AM Perhaps, but Switzerland stays with 3 wins vs Germany (the lastest: 5-1). :teach:

Ok, thats right. But I really don't believe that the Czechs doesn't make any ponit against Canada and Finland. They will wake up after that loss against the swiss and wants rehabilitate.
I am sure when Germany beats Switzerland and Italy we will be in the quarterfinals.

You're right in that sense, and Belarus was a much bigger upset, but this is also a landmark win for the Swiss in the sense that they've been trying for years to get their hockey program on the map...and we can talk about the worlds and the other tournaments, but this is the biggest one of them all because its the Olympics. Over the past 6 or 7 years, the Czechs have been just as dominant on the international scene as Canada, and not someone with a team of only a few NHL players beat them in a best-on-best tournament.
Jussi 02-16-2006, 11:33 AM Well I bet the IIHF and IOC are glad that this became a real tournament unlike the last 2 where the lesser countries didn't even get to play the real teams.
Uhmm...did you forget about Belarus-Sweden 4 years ago?

twelve 02-16-2006, 06:21 PM ^ You got it. ;)
it's always tough to play against swiss and germany. they have nothing to lose. i haven't seen the game but their style of hockey + often very good goaltending makes problem for offensive teams like czechs.
congrats to swiss to big win :handclap:

nik jr 02-16-2006, 10:35 PM not a huge thing, except for suisse. they played really well.
w/o spacek's Horrible turnover right in front of vokoun, and/or if someone had actually got the puck after spacek's hit on paterlini(?) czechs would have won.
why were the czechs refusing to dump and chase? even when suisse had 4 on the blueline, they tried to carry in, even on PP. big waste.
straka and jagr and vokoun are best czechs. other lines don't do much. lang looks bad. looks like that a lot in NHL, but still scores......

swisdan 02-17-2006, 03:52 AM Can anyone tell me if Vauclair played? If so how was he?
Good job by Vauclair. Strong with his defensive play, very important defensive defenseman for the swiss.
Vauclair plays with a broken finger.. with a plaster in his glove. Good spirit by Vauclair.
KimoGionta 02-17-2006, 03:55 AM This game is an example of why The Rangers should be worried in the playoffs. Something about Jagr....the guy has talent but he doesn`t seem to have the conquering spirit to inspire others to give it their all.

Yes, this game is evidence of that.

Jagr was the powerhouse all time in that game....
The problem was anywhere but not about Jagr.
Beach Boy 02-17-2006, 05:38 AM I don't give credit to the Swiss..they didn't impress me much. They still got totally outshot and totally dominated..if Abischer hadn't played the game of his life it woulda been a blowout for the Czechs. Czech Republic is just getting warmed up and it makes no difference where you finnish you still gotta beat the best to win..this round robin is just formal crap. And Jagr was amazing, played like a monster...The swiss can thank Abischer for this one!
Winner 02-17-2006, 07:03 AM Well, Jágr had birthday the day before this match. I guess the party was so lively, that they were a bit exhausted to play against Swiss ;)
twelve 02-17-2006, 11:30 AM lol
Maybe.
Good that the party was two days ago and won't take place in the quarterfinals or later.
The Czechs obviously expected the Swiss to be overawed. I had to laugh at the many times in which a Czech had the puck and a Swiss just sailed by and took it away from him. It almost seemed as if some Czech players thought that the Swiss wouldn't dare take back the puck once it was in their posession. That happened an awful lot in the first period, and the first goal was the result of an action like that. And, don't blame Vokoun, defence just left him alone. Not a Czech near Ziegler...
The shorthander was also a great example of how the Czechs underestimated the 'little' Swiss. Thought a check would do it. Maybe even thought Paterlini would just stay down and lie there till the powerplay ended. Instead, the guy got up and scored. Five Czech players grouped around one Swiss, and only one of them making a move to get the puck!
This team has to wake up!
