Never thought I'd see one of these again...but Jagr dons the legendary Jofa 235, the worlds most famous paper bag! The helmet that gave us Gretzky, Kurri, Stastny, Hunter, McSorley and more has returned in all its glory.

I saw that! I didn't think any of those existed anymore. When I was a kid we used to want those helmets but they weren't certified for play. Don't forget Kevin Lowe!

I've seen lots of pictures of him wearing that helmet in practices and stuff. Why doesn't he wear it in the NHL? Is there a rule against it or something? After all, it IS a flimsy little thing.

Is that the same thing as the one Irbe's wearing (modified for a goalie of course) ?

I believe the Jofa's aren't recognized as having enough protection and are banned.

Aerodynamics. :teach:

The sleek design allows the player to reach incredible speeds, while the mullet that usually accompanies the JOFA is used as a stabilizer, much like the spoiler on a racing car.

Not all Jofa's were banned, I believe just the particular model that Gretzky, Kurri, etc wore.

yup i did a topic of research on this for one of my classes in university (dont ask)
it didnt meet like any of the safety regulations of the NHL, but they weren't gonna ban it until gretzky retired, its very similar to that god awful helmet messier wore

Wow, sort of unusual for the NHL to have stricter safety rules than the IIHF.

Messier's helmet was great, the old Cooper 2000. A lot of goalies used to wear them because they were very protective.

Did Jagr wear that helmet at the Worlds last year? If so, I can't believe he's still alive. He took a rocket shot off his head in the semis against Sweden.

Nope, helmets are mandatory.

On the subject of helmets I'll take the Cooper sk2000 over the Jofa "egg-head" helmet any day!

I think Jagr used one of those Jofa 235 helmets last season in Russia too, they're true classics! Looks kinda weird with a visor though.

And they sell for quite a lot on Ebay, I've seen them going for up to $100 and maybe even more. I have a green one myself but I'm not selling it... :snide:

typical backwards IOC

they require visors for all players under 25 but allow a helmet which is basically tin-foil hat in terms of protection.

Isn't Messier's helmet the old Win-Well?

Irbe wears this thing, with the goalie mask http://www.peoples.ru/sport/hockey/larionov/larionov_2.jpg

I believe Igor Larionov was the last to play in the NHL with the old Gretzky helmet.

A lot of people covet the old Jofa combos because the cage had the best visability.

People keep coming into the store asking if we sell the "egg-shell" helmet combo despite the fact that it's been out of production for almost a decade. We tell them to try eBay.

lemieux32*

Messier's was a Cooper SK2000 with a Win-Well sticker on it. Maybe they custom padded it (we always wanted those leather starps his had that held the chinstrap instead of the usual rubber/plastic ones). Kurri wore the old Jofa with a visor for part of his career.
