I'm a Rangers fan and I watched the ceremony

and I have to say that the love and admiration that the Devils fans have for Scott Stevens rivaled that of Messier (could be argued even more so, not the point of the post)

I just want to say that I was at the Messier Retirement ceremony and the emotions I got from that (almost cried on a few occassions) I felt tonight as well also almost shedding a tear.

Scott Stevens is one of the greatest defenceman to ever play the game and I started thinking about how I could pay tribute as an opposing fan and here it goes

When I look at Scott Stevens he always reminded me of some smug little plick that I wanted to just punch in the face and scrape that little smug smirk off his face with a cheese grater. My opinion of him was that while not dirty in accordance to the rules, I believe that he intentionally went for the head with those shoulder checks and had always hoped that someone would put him in the hospital with the same kind of hit. But then I always ended my thought process with this final thought

I Wish he was on the Rangers

Congrats on a great career Mr. Scott Stevens, you will be missed by this Rangers fan.

To the Devils fans, you're lucky to have a player like that for as long as you did.

And Great job showing your feelings for this great player.

I am a Ranger fan who not only saw the game, I was there. The Devils organization did a hell of a job on Friday night, with the number 4 at every entrance, the banners at every gate, and the cool-as-hell paintings of Stevens on the stairs in the lower section of the arena. I half expected a franchise as stoic as New Jersey, who have always been about the team and not the individual, to just sort of say "Here's your banner, thanks for coming" in a 10 minute ceremony, but they really made it a special night. This was the best atmosphere I've felt at a hockey game since probably game 7 of the 2003 finals. It was a lot of fun to watch.

And to the original poster who said he got just as emotional as the Messier one; how can you not? I always get teary when a player has their number retired, you'd have to be made of stone not to half the time. :)
