Stevens says it will be an emotional night.

"I'm just going to try and enjoy it," the 41-year-old Stevens said in an interview this week. "It's a great honor and to be the first Devil to have his number retired, it's definitely exciting. I really don't know how to prepare for it. I don't know what I'll say yet but I'm sure it'll be short, I'm a man of few words."

Scott Stevens was THE player that led me to become a Devils fan way back when I was 11 years old in 1994. While I've grown now and he's retired, I still say Stevens is the best hitter in NHL history (in all of hockey, I'd reckon), one of the best defensive defenseman in NHL history, and one of the best leaders in NHL history.

I know cases can be/are made that Messier and Bourque and whomever are better; I don't care. Give me the choice, and I'd take Scott Stevens as captain any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

#4 forever.

Ah, yes, the game. Devils should be pumped up for this one, I think they will take it to Carolina Hurricanes with a firey passion. Erik Cole, keep your head up if any Devil wants to do an homage to Stevens.

#4 as in: 4 elbow penalties in 22 seasons
#4 as in: 4 cup final appearances
#4 as in: the only # thus far we will never see on a Devil Jesey again
#4 as in: the greatest leader of them all
#4 as in the obvious trivia question tonight being Myles O'Conner being the last Devil to wear that # before the legend
#4 as in: # of Conference and Regulat Season Conference Titles

Goodbye to a legend and the greatest leader in Devils history.

On the 8th day God created #4 Scott Stevens.

Thanks to the St. Louis Blues for signing Brendan Shanahan in 1991, and thanks to arbitrator Judge Edward Houston for awarding the Devils Scott Stevens instead of Curtis Joseph and Rod Brind'Amour as compensation. Lou Lamoriello asked for Stevens; the Blues offered Joseph and Brind'Amour.

But most importantly, of course, thank you to Scott Stevens for all that he did for the Devils organization. You were a very special player who brought a lot to the New Jersey Devils hockey club. I can't wait to see your #4 hanging from the rafters next to the three Stanley Cup Championship banners that you paid a so vital a part in helping hang.

Lastly, I would like to give a little nod to the following former-Devils. They have done something that no one other than Scott Stevens has ever done, nor will ever do again:
Bob Lorimer (http://www.newjerseydevils.com/2005/html/history/azplayers/historyprofiles.php?id=116)
Gord Mark (http://www.newjerseydevils.com/2005/html/history/azplayers/historyprofiles.php?id=130)

It would be nice to see Randy McKay, Claude Lemieaux and Stephane Richer. I don't know what kind of commitments these former players have these days. I do know that McKay is serving as an assistant coach at his alma matter, Michigan Tech.

Stevens did a lot for hockey in North Carolina too... He was the first person for the fans to dislike in a big way. I mean that seriously, I loved his game and he was not a cheap shot artist. I remember him saying after playoff games that it was great that the Canes fans hated him, it was good for hockey and got the fans here into it, got the fans here behind the Canes. I agree.... He showed what playoff hockey was about to Cane's fans. I hated him but always respected him. He was an awesome player who always brought it. I will never forget that playoff game where he was the only guy on the ice after a big fight almost taunting the fans, while they were throwing everything they could find onto the ice at him. I was thinking... this guy is hardcore!

I'm really impressed with the Carolina taking to the Canes. Everybody (including me) doubted the move of the beloved Whalers. While it isn't ACC or Nascar, its seems the people of the area are getting into it. Good job by Rutherford building a quality team and by the ownership to stick it out when others said it wouldn't work.
Rivalries are good for hockey. Its one think to hate a player (Darius), its another to respect a player and wish he was a member of your squad.

They were showing Game 4 of the 95-96 series on one of the ESPN channels. I got to watch Stevens dish out some pretty good hits on the Wings and him hoist the cup during my lunch break. Pretty neat.

Tonights game is going to be incredible. You guys are celebrating a great player and we are adding Weight to the lineup. Definitly not one to be missing.

This will be a great game. Just wish the Canes were not so beat up and missing key players. That said, they have been winning anyway so hopefully it will be competitive. I see NJ taking this one, should be a great game though. Devils have to be the team that Carolina hates the most so pretty fitting they are squaring off on Steven's night. Cane's fans would LOVE to win this game! I see the Devils taking it though with all things considered.

#4 The best defensman from the 1980's through 2000's; he is the mold of player people associate hockey players with, we can watch the rest of our lives and not see another like #4; in my opinion he is right uip there with the greats of all time

gretzky, messier, lemuiex, coffey, borque, and scott stevens these are the guys.

I think you have to throw Yzerman in that group but I can't think of a player I'd rather have on my team in the history of the NHL than Scott Stevens (ok, maybe Gordie Howe).

I just think its a shame that I think the average hockey fan would choose Borque over Stevens as THE defenseman of his time. In this fantasy sport driven culture I think guys like Stevens are totally underrated by the less-than knowledgable fans.

Its been a privelege to watch him all these years and my only regret is that there wasn't a "last game" for him that I could go to and cheer my heart out.

Well, I am disappointed.

Funny, but I am overseas in Italy. Had to be part of it somehow listening online, 2:30am.

Funny, but I was truly hoping when he put on the jersey he would take off his pants and be in hockey uniform or something...how cool would that have been...

..or given the "C" to Elias...SOMETHING..

no surprises..I HAD IT ALL PLANNED!! It would have been great!

I should plan future ceremonies...

No need to compare with the flash of NYR, a genuine, smart indy film puts to shame any hollywood production you know?

Ahhh...I am listening yet and hoping he jump on the ice. Hope Daneyko plays...that would be cool...

last night i was watching Game 1 of the 2000 cup finals vs Dallas...my god that team was stacked...couldn't help but start pining for the days of Stevens and Daneyko patrolling the Devs blueline...

it's not quite the same though i suppose being able to watch a guy like Hale slowly blossom in NJ and carve his niche into this team is something to savour...not to mention watching Whitey take greater steps towards being a real stalwart and leader around the club.

Great night! was electric to be there. Great to see classic Devil's Hockey on the Captain's night. If Lou can find this team 1 more talented fwd, and a solid Dman for the point on the PP this team can be a real contender in the playoffs. I really love the way Hale plays, and Marshall has become a real offensive threat. That move just inside the blueline before the 2nd goal, turning the Dman inside out was sweet! Class job by the orginization on a great presentation.

I just came back from the game. Lots of chanting "SCOTTY STEVENS," cheering in general, seeing the banner go up, nearly tearing up at the ceremony for my favorite Devil getting his proper due, actually being brushed aside by security while waiting in line for the men's room because Scott Stevens (complete w/ huge grin) was coming through the concourse during the first intermission, and pretty much owning the Carolina Hurricanes 3-0 while sitting 10 rows from the glass on Carolina's end of the rink. First game I went to for a long time (being a student kidna restricts you time-wise and money-wise), I spent a lot of money, but I'm extremely glad I went. Like, really extremely glad.

What a perfect ceremony and game. The pre-game was so emotional. That was great to see Scott Stevens get that high honor, particulary with his parents, brothers, wife and kids there.

Carolina looked pretty good, but the Devils played better. Brodeur was simply brilliant tonight. The defensemen played great, and the forwards were terrific in both ends of the ice. They played Devils hockey tonight.

Marty now has 429 wins, just 6 behind fourth place Jacque Plante. Marty also picked up his 80th regular season shutout to move just 1 behind Alex Connell and Tiny Thompson for fifth place. His #30 will be up with Stevens' #4 and Daneyko's #3 someday.

These last couple games I think we were able to see how far the Devils have really come since the first 3 months of the season. The team was already playing with a ton of confidence, and after these two wins over two of the top teams in the East, the confidence has to be growing even more. Has this been one helluva season or what?! I don't think there are many teams that could have imagined bouncing back or doing half as well as the Devils.

Look at other teams, facing not even moderate adversity by comparison, yet with talented players...none of them perform a shadows resemblense to this team...

definately class job by the Hurricanes coming out to see the ceremonies and banging their sticks. Very ironic moment right after the ceremonies ended with Brindamour wearing the captain's C shaking Scottie's hand. Interesting that 15 years later that trade really would have been even- Brindamour and Cujo for Shanahan. Cujo is still a starting goalie, and Brindy is is still kicking. Heck even SHanahan is still a solid contributor. Boy am I glad the arbitrator felt otherwise! :)

I don't think it could have been better done by the organization, by Scotty or by the team. It was simply the best (OK, they played that song so it's stuck in my head).

Just one of those incredible moments that you will always be able to say you were happy to be there for.

I love this team!!!

Special appreciation to the 228 denizen who told all the people that this wasn't the first game of the year and he wanted to see them back again Tuesday. As someone who goes to every game that I'm off for, I was happy to chuckle instead of get steamed about an attendance comment.
