GentlemanOfLeisure 02-03-2006, 09:29 AM July 24th 1991.. That was the day that Shanahan offically left the devils for the blues. He was at the time my favorite player(besides Muller), and i was devestated. During that whole summer all i kept hearing was the blues were low-balling New Jersey and wouldnt give them squat. Back then, there was no internet, and no hockey news other than WFAN in new york. Canada Cup 1991, during a team canada game against finland, John Davidson, doing the color, mentions that New Jersey might get Stevens as compensation for the loss of fellow Canada cup canadian Shanahan. I start to get excited. IT beat Rod Brind'amour and a goalie who at the time was worse than Vincient Rienendue. Stevens gets awared on Sept 4th 1991. A few days later, Muller gets traded to Montreal. A new era begins. October 5th 1991, opening night... At the meandowlands. New Jersey vs. St.Louis. Shanahan's first game as a blue, vs. his former teammates. Stevens first game as a Devil, vs. his former teammates. I was there in attendence.. I remember the warm up. It was hard watching Shanahan in a Blues uniform. I wanted to puke my guts out and so did the crowd who booed his every move. I remember they were playing the old Rolling Stones song "mixed emotions" and it fit the mood. You could tell Stevens wasnt feeling being a Devil at all. The Devils went on to beat the Blues that night. Stephane Richer, in his first New Jersey game had two goals and Stevens played a spirited game. He was pushing around his former teammates like Garth Butcher and I remember thinking to myself, "This dude is a professional. And he's gonna be great. But he wont play here much beyond his contract." Thank god i was wrong. He spend 13 years here. And the blues havent won nothing since. | ||
