Easton 01-30-2006, 01:05 PM I saw this while looking at FSNY's schedule for the week. FSNY will be showing three games I'm assuming, or maybe a collection of clips and such, on Friday starting at 11:30AM. Here's the schedule:

1st Cup: Red Wings at Devils
2:00 PM The Captain's Legacy - Devils Stanley Cups
2nd Cup: Devils at Stars
4:30 PM The Captain's Legacy - Devils Stanley Cups 3rd Cup: Ducks at Devils

Throw in Game 3 of the 1995 SCF, and I'd agree with you.
Verbeek12 01-31-2006, 07:22 PM The stuff on the website is cool. Though they missed maybe his best hit of all time- Game 2 95 finals when he flattened Slava Kozlov out cold. As the Detroit bench was chirping at him during a timeout he pointed at them and said your next!

crashlanding 02-01-2006, 06:59 PM As long as we're talking classic games I just wanted to bring up game 5 of the '00 finals. Even though we lost that one 1-0 in triple OT I still remember that being one of the greatest games I've ever watched. Shame I'll never get to see it again.

Most amazing game I ever sat through in all my life as a hockey fan. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to bury the puck and win the cup. Things did not turn out as well as they could havethanks to Mike Modano but going 3 and 0 in their building in the Finals including clinching the cup in their building was sweetness.
I wil never forget game 5 of 2000.
Easton 02-01-2006, 11:31 PM I was up all night watching that game. I pretty much got four hours of sleep and had to take the SATs the next morning.

I just remember thinking about both goaltenders, HOW are they doing that? Both teams were getting such great chances.
I was working nights at a newspaper then. Game 5, I left between second and third period. Walked in door, Moo scored.
Game 6, there was no way I was leaving the newsroom until the game ended.

Maybe they'll show his run in with Shayne Corson in the 2001 Post season:
The Leafs were about to be eliminated in game 6 and Corson just goes over and starts hitting Stevens. Scotty shrugs, grins and says, "Go ahead, keep hitting me. We're still going to beat you."
I love that!

devsjunkie 02-02-2006, 02:27 PM I'm getting real psyched up for all of this.
We are and were so lucky to have Stevens.
And if the team dares to play like they tend to do on nights like this... Scotty can just go in the locker room and throw a skate at someone!

I watched that one live in England. I think the game started at 1.00 a.m. You can work out when it finished. Sleep? What that? I was one depressed and jumpy zombie the next day at work.
Jonathan. 02-02-2006, 10:16 PM Thank god it won't be the three hour sob fest that Messier's was.
Why are all the other area teams so against Messier's ceremony? It was an extremely nice thing for someone who means a HELL of a lot to the team and the community as a whole. Stevens should get the same treatment, IMO. And I'd never criticize it if they did it for a few days anticipation as they did with Messier's, either. It's a GREAT honor to have your number retired. And the ceremony should be great as well.
Easton 02-02-2006, 10:21 PM Thank god it won't be the three hour sob fest that Messier's was.
I'm not so sure about that. One of the reasons Stevens didn't retire at a press conference was because he admitted he was an emotional guy.

Stevens was very reserved throughout the whole interview. I think he was trying really hard to hold his tears in. I'm sure he'll break down a bunch of times tomorrow. He's got a whole speech written up.

And all the more power to him.
It's kind of lame and even disrespectful for people to criticize Messier's retirement. I hope Steven's is just as elaborate and nice. It's the only way to send someone off who meant that much to your organization, IMO.
:handclap:
Jonathan. 02-02-2006, 10:25 PM Someone should tape the ceremony. I'll be at a concert in NB and would actually like to watch it.

As he reminisced about his career, Stevens recalled a humorous incident from his first training camp with the Capitals. They were playing the Philadelphia Flyers and the 18-year-old Stevens skated over and sat down on the Flyers bench by mistake to start the second period.
"I hear a voice from behind me say, `You just wish you were over here,"' he said. "I looked back and there was Bob McCammon, coach of the Flyers. You never saw a guy get off a bench so quickly."
hahaha...Thank god he didn't or he, nor the rest of the Devils, would have been so successful.

The only problem I had with Messier's retirement was it was SO EFFIN LONG. Other than that, it was fine.
Easton 02-03-2006, 02:46 PM I'm watching the game game against Dallas and I just saw the last five minutes of the game against Detroit. The one against Detroit seemed so emotional, much more than I've ever seen any team win the cup. Everyone was hugging like crazy, Peluso was crying the whole time before and during the celebration. Once Lemeiux was selected as MVP, half the team mobbed him. I wish Marty would loose some weight he looked a lot slimmer back then. I think he's really appreciative of good food.
Now I just saw the hit by Hatcher that took out Sykora. I'm not sure if it was clean or not but it knocked Sykora out. It was in retaliation for Gomez's unintentional take out on Sydor, whoose knee seemed to lock in to Gomez's. I want Hatcher's head now.
devsjunkie 02-03-2006, 02:50 PM I thought it was for Arnott's flip of Nieuwendyk...
But if you watch the whole series, Hatcher had been doing his usual ... shadowing the line's smallest guy ... the whole time.
It's weird about that 1995 series. I lived out of state, and didn't have computer and very little contact with the Devils, so that's kind of the cup I'm least attached to. It's so wonderful to see 'em win it though and everyone looks so young.
GentlemanOfLeisure 02-03-2006, 02:52 PM During the Red Wings game....
john davidson says, "Bruce Driver will be an UFA after this season ends. Somebody's gonna get a steal in Driver."
Very nice Rangers fans..
Easton 02-03-2006, 03:34 PM I just realized something. The Stars won the cup in '99 and went to the finals again the following year but lost to the Devils. In 2001, the Devils went all the way to the finals just like the Stars but lost to the Avs.
rat_riot97 02-03-2006, 03:34 PM I'm skipping all my classes today to watch the Stevens Tribute on FSN. What a heavy sacrifice I'm willing to make. ;)
I'm watching the Dallas game right now. After seeing it again, I'm certain that Hatcher put his elbow up in Sykora's face. It was a DIRTY hit. :madfire:
It also wasn't a very smart play, because he let Elias go free toward the net so he could take out Sykora.
 Long Live Scott Stevens!!!
Easton 02-03-2006, 03:39 PM Lou learned a lot from the Stars' organization. He eventually got Nieuwendyk after realizing how faceoffs could dominate a game, Matvichuk, and Langs who's out in this game with an injury. Ironically, Arnott, who flipped Nieuwy around, went to the Stars.
devsjunkie 02-03-2006, 04:00 PM Conversely the Stars had no idea how to make use of Grant Marshall, which explains why he had 60something playoff games under his belt before he went on his little 2003 tear.
I'm glad Langenbrunner's not in this game, it's now against my laws of nature to root against him.
Easton 02-03-2006, 04:05 PM I still have the NY Times headline the day after the Devils won the cup. It read, "Overjoyed in Overtime."

devsjunkie 02-03-2006, 04:17 PM Wow, I didn't know he was on the team. I just saw a glimpse of him and his blonde or bleached hair?
Yeah that was a weird look for him... I think he still had that in Columbus for a while, that musta turned some heads.

TaiMaiShu 02-03-2006, 04:53 PM i must say... this team was STACKED. all four line were just great. if only mogilny looked as good as he did. same for malakov
crashlanding 02-03-2006, 04:54 PM I'm just amazed at the depth of the team in 2000. I'm pretty much speechless when I think about it. The entire team is made up of veterans and young guys who have had good careers. I can't think of a single player that I would say "sucks." The closest is Malakhov, but if 2000 Playoffs Edition Malakhov is your worst player that is a solid team.
You can make the argument that the 2001 team was better, but just saying the name Sean O'Donnell gives me the chills.
Even our "grinders" had good offensive skills McKay, Lemieux, Holik. It was just an awesome lineup.

Yeah! How far down his list of possible depth defensemen must Lou have gone at the '01 deadline to come up with O'Donnell? Ken Sutton and Willie Mitchell were both better than O'Donnell then, even though one was almost finished and the other just starting in the League.

I'm least attached to the 2003 Cup, because a Cinderella underdog with a hot rookie goaltender took us seven games (almost a role reversal of the almighty Messier 1994 ECF, minus the extra padding), it was beginning of the end of Stevens and Niedermayer, not to mention Marty's most embarrassing career goal against.

It's a shame to be so unattached for those reasons.
Our bet-ter goaltender got THREE shutouts in the Finals but somehow didn't get the MVP.
A certain Mr. Pat Roy had a pretty embarrassing goal too and there's never talk about that tarnishing his 2001 Cup.
The beginning of the end? It was one of Scotty's shining moments coming back next game from a death blow and Nieds became a Norris Trophy winner.
I won't ever see it the way you do, but that's OK. We're all seeing all of this through different eyes.

It's all relative. Unattached is inaccurate. I'll just say 1995 and 2000 meant more to me than 2003 by a about fine hair. Scotty came back for the rest of the playoffs like the warrior he is. I just don't think he was ever 100% in the half season he never completed after his last Cup. For Nieds, the post-game said it all. He had already been crying with Rob and the other Ducks in the Anaheim locker room, before the press conference. Nieds fulfilled his contractual obligation, collected his hardware, and took his sweet time writing his own ticket to the West Coast. As for the Conn Smythe, if they can win one game on the road in the SCF, Giguere goes home empty-handed. Roy's gaffe didn't cost him or his team a trophy (not saying Marty's gaffe did cost them, it was a team lack of effort. I will always have more respect for the Devils ECF effort against Ottawa. Say what you will about Marty's personal life, but he proved he could win a Cup, despite off-ice personal adversity, self-created or otherwise. I also think Roy's last game in a Hab's sweater was more embarrassing during his career than his misplayed goal against in 2001.
devsjunkie 02-05-2006, 11:14 AM You just mentioned Marty's misplayed goal and I mentioned Roy's one in return. Both won the Cup and neither was tarnished by that faux pas. Wasn't really about anything beyond that.
