NHL.com game preview (http://www.nhl.com/scores/previews/752_2_preview.html)
Brooklyndevil 01-27-2006, 10:09 AM If the Devs come out with two points, it would be successful couple of days in Florida. Three out of four points and a long rest before Ottawa. Hope the boys come out sharper tonight.
DevilsFan38 01-27-2006, 10:25 AM Do you think Marty will be in goal again, or will they give Clemmensen the start? I hope Marty plays, there's a few days off after this and we really need the points. And, hopefully our offense shows up tonight.
Brooklyndevil 01-27-2006, 11:03 AM Do you think Marty will be in goal again, or will they give Clemmensen the start? I hope Marty plays, there's a few days off after this and we really need the points. And, hopefully our offense shows up tonight.
With four full days of rest coming up, it will be Marty and Roberto, who has also been playing well of late.
4check22 01-27-2006, 12:57 PM Tonight's match is the type of game where we need a guy like Stevens to remind everybody in the locker room that there is a long-awaited rest waiting after the game like a Christmas bonus for a job well-done. He would then lead by example and play in top form with punishing checks and stellar defense. Then, of course, the Devils would win and take 5 of 6 points in a 4-day span.
Who is going to step up and spark the Devils tonight?
PhillyDevil 01-27-2006, 01:30 PM I would let Clemmensen play tonight. The Devils almost seem like they are getting to comfortable with Marty back there as evidenced last night. Putting Scott back there might shake them up a little for an otherwise uninspiring opponent.
NJ_Devil_Boy 01-27-2006, 01:40 PM I say start Clemmensen. In a perfect world, I'd let Brodeur play all 82 games. But he's been playing a lot lately (really well), and games like yesterday have to take a toll on even the best players. Anyway, the guys should be fresh since it's not like they showed up yesterday (besides Brodeur). :teach:
DevilFisch 01-27-2006, 01:51 PM Regardless of who starts for NJ tonight, I hope the offense (and the team in general) shows up for the whole 60 minutes instead of the last 30 (or so). From all accounts, NJ was lucky to get a point out of the game.
I'm confident NJ will turn it around and finish January with a 11-1-1 record.
rwhite 01-27-2006, 05:09 PM All the team needs is a wakeup call. I mean a few nights ago the offense potted 4 goals and they get shutout for 1 game out of their 10-1-1 record for January. Not to bad. I see a lot of they need to turn it around posts but for the way they have been playing lately, I don't mind a less than impressive offensive game ONCE and a while, as long as the defense/goaltending is strong which it was.
Prediction - Offense gets back on track with a 5 goal outburst, unforetunatly the defense gives up 3. 5-3 NJ win.
Brooklyndevil 01-27-2006, 05:18 PM I still see this team missing a forward and a defensemen. I stated before and will again, I would love to add Mark Parrish and d-man. However, I doubt we have the cap space for both. And is Lou willing to give up prospects and picks. We're good, but not yet there, unless Marty was to play every playoff game as he did last night and he still can't do it by himself as we saw last night.
Feed Me A Stray Cat 01-27-2006, 05:56 PM I duno, I am fairly confident tonight. We stopped Florida in their tracks 3-0 last time we played them, and they were 7-2 going into that game.
I just hope the offense isn't as lethargic as last night.
jrunclenyc 01-27-2006, 07:34 PM Need a favor here.
If one of you is watching the game tonight, could you post whether Jason Ryznar is suited up, or is a DNP-CD. Noted it last night in a pub after missing first half hour chatting w/my brother in Michigan about his call-up, as was happy to see Grant Marshall's injury not as bad as first feared. I'm working late at the office, and, frankly, don't know if NHL radio will suffice or even if WFAN does live webcasts. Lastly, will meet my asportual girlfriend (but she does play a MEAN game of tennis) - if Jason plays, will take her to a pub televising the game. If a DNP-CD, will go to Plan "b". Thanks, good luck to the Devs.
crashlanding 01-27-2006, 08:07 PM Marty's starting tonight.
crashlanding 01-27-2006, 08:16 PM Burns is on Devils Gamenight.
He says he's done with treatments and he's getting stronger, still doesn't know the results though.
He watches all the games and calls Lou throughout the season. He doesn't think the game's changed that much with the new rules.
He wants to get back to hockey and if he's healthy enough he'd like to coach.
It's good to see that he seems to be doing well. I wish him the best and hope he can come back to the bench healthy because it seems he truly loves it.
crashlanding 01-27-2006, 08:24 PM Now it's Robinson's turn.
Haha, he says he's been babysitting in LA.
He says he hasn't been sick like that before, he was taking the team's play home with him, had to be stressful, and his brother was rediagnosed with cancer.
Says Elias will do a lot to turn a team around.
Says Gomez is more of a complete hockey player now than he was before, more defensive conscious. Thinks he was trying to do too much before.
Thinks the layoff hurt Marty at the beginning of the season.
Larry says he's willing to help in any way he can if Lou needs it.
He likes to coach, but doesn't like the game as much. Too much special teams and not enough hitting. Thinks its getting better now. He wasn't ready for all the penalties at the start of the season.
Will keep his consulting job with the team.
Good to see that he'll stick around with the team in some capacity.
sveiglar 01-27-2006, 08:28 PM Woohoo, my first gamenight thread! I'm stranded by a snowstorm on a work roadtrip but there is high-speed here, so NHL Radio and HF will hopefully make for a good evening!
Let's go Devils!
Brooklyndevil 01-27-2006, 08:30 PM I agree with Larry 100% about not liking the game of hockey in it it's early stages of the year with all the pp and the physical element being taken out of the game. It's now gotten much better.

Hey, dude, where are you? I am listening to the 'Fan via NHL network - if you're in the states you must either be in eastern Michigan, Colorado or Utah.
Just heard the word - my nephew is playing tonight!
DevilFisch 01-27-2006, 08:38 PM Matt & Chico will be YOUR commentators for tonight's game.
Brodeur told Chico before this deal he was going to do what Ken Daneyko did. And now he WILL, staying with NJ through the 2011-2012 season.
Devils are 3-0 against Florida this season so far. (Aside: Luongo has played 48 games and 22 consecutive decisions-21 starts)]
If I heard correctly, Ryznar IS playing tonight.
UPDATE: Devils get the first PP of the game! Gelinas pulling down Gomez.

Heh, western Newfoundland actually. Yeah, listening on NHL.com game radio.
Ryznar? Yeah, hope he does well.
Easton 01-27-2006, 08:39 PM It was great to see Pat Burns. He's lost a lot of weight, grown a gray beard, and his voice is a little higher than it used to be. He seemed really enthusiastic and much more amicable than his normal hard-nosed character. I liked the point he made on the new game when he said with so many penalty kill's your best players aren't going to be playing as much as you'd like them to, which might also explain the low production from the Madden line.
Larry Robinson still seems to need some more time to relax. I wonder if Lou is hesitating his decision for a coach with the possibility that Pat Burns could be back later this season, or with the hope that Larry might be back if he feels better. Plus, it just wouldn't be right to hire a new coach and fire him once Burns returns or if Larry decides to return.
A_Mack17 01-27-2006, 08:41 PM Cumon boys lets get a goal on this early PP!
crashlanding 01-27-2006, 08:41 PM Early PP for the Devils, doesn't look that great. No shots.
sveiglar 01-27-2006, 08:42 PM In Canada, the Score television network was running a contest in December and January for the Royal Rumble called the Ultimate Fan weekend. Airfare to/accomodation in Miami, tickets for two to the Devs (fav team)/Panthers tonight, Heat/Suns (fav team) tomorrow night, and then tickets to the Rumble on Sunday. Unfortunately, I did not win. :(
Instead I get snowbound. Great luck! :)
Go Devils! Power-play.
DevilFisch 01-27-2006, 08:44 PM Another PP for NJ. Kiwatkowski slashes Janssen after Cam crushed Joel along the boards.
Let's hope this time, NJ gets a shot on goal.
crashlanding 01-27-2006, 08:44 PM PP Number Two.
Let's get a shot this time. Both losses this month we failed to score on the PP. We gotta get this going.
Haha, Chico says "We don't see the good old spears much anymore these days." in a nostalgic tone.
Easton 01-27-2006, 08:45 PM Wow...only one other game tonight. A bunch of games are tomorrow night, but I wonder what the strategy was behind the scheduling. Since the Super Bowl is on Sunday, which means people are gonna lock themselves in to watch the game, I would expect all of people to be out and about on Saturday instead of watching hockey.
crashlanding 01-27-2006, 08:46 PM Nice play by Elias/Gomez to hit Langenbrunner in the low slot. Good shot couldn't get to the rebound though.
We can't seem to hold the puck in as well lately in the past few games on the PP.
TaiMaiShu 01-27-2006, 08:46 PM the 2 PPs so far weren't too bad
DevilFisch 01-27-2006, 08:48 PM 0 for 2 on the PP, but the Devils got 2 shots on the last PP and seemed more poised. Right now, they look to be the better team; but it's still early.

The Super Bowl is next Sunday. Saturday is just a popular night for NHL.

Go Devils! Power-play.
Suns - Steve Nash is awesome.
I used to play soccer, up to semi-pro "A" league level, years ago. Knew about his brother and his playing for Canada.
Nice night to be snowbound, though!
C'mon you Devs! Go #19!!

keep playing them theya re fresh and have legs; to reply to my own post; i am a tool
DevilFisch 01-27-2006, 08:56 PM Kozlov with a nice move beats some Panthers gets stuffed by Luongo. He's been looking OK so far. Great to see Marshall back.
Devils on PP #3. Florida IS the most penalized team in the NHL. Kraijeck tripped, I think, Marshall which led to the call.

Yeah this 4 day break can't come soon enough. Not that they look overly tired or anything I just think a more rested team would pass better/get to more loose pucks.
TaiMaiShu 01-27-2006, 08:58 PM f'in offsides!!!!!
crashlanding 01-27-2006, 08:59 PM I feel like Elias hasn't looked as confident lately. He's passed up some shots and just now he let a pretty good pass go thinking Gomez would get it.
sveiglar 01-27-2006, 08:59 PM so does this bodure guy in net
Bodure Miller? Is he implicating any hockey players in drug scandals today?

Definitely, I'm sure Elias is looking forward to the break real bad.

He has said that he still isn't feeling 100%... he could just be a bit tired...
sveiglar 01-27-2006, 09:01 PM Close, Brylin..
sveiglar 01-27-2006, 09:07 PM Pretty non-descript first period so far.
DevilFisch 01-27-2006, 09:08 PM Florida just had their best chances to score this period, but Brodeur is, well, Brodeur and lets nothing in.
TaiMaiShu 01-27-2006, 09:08 PM all Hail Marty
sveiglar 01-27-2006, 09:11 PM Strong period by Marty, Mr. Devil for life (that just sounds right!)
ice berg slim 01-27-2006, 09:13 PM hows Gionta look tonight? When was the last time jersey scored a goal BTW?
Ronnie Bass 01-27-2006, 09:14 PM Man, I hope this is not a repeat of our offense like last night.
Brooklyndevil 01-27-2006, 09:15 PM I have to think or at least hope that this team is dead tired, because their losing all the battles for lose pucks and it's starting to resemble last night's game. And I have agree about Elias looking sluggish. He needs a rest more then anyone.

Yeah I was just thinking that. If any team needs four days off, it's them.
sveiglar 01-27-2006, 09:28 PM Drop the puck on the second.. let's go Devils!
DevilFisch 01-27-2006, 09:31 PM The Devils' PP is 2 for 18 in their last 4 games (including tonight).
The Devils did play sloppy in the first period, as the Panthers D is tight on the Devils forwards. Fortunately, the Devils have shown up on defense and in net (thanks Marty).
Devils get called for their first penalty of the night. Matvichuk knocks Sim down in front of the ref. Panthers are 0 for 14 in their last 3 games on the PP.
sveiglar 01-27-2006, 09:32 PM Ack, Matvichuk...
DevilFisch 01-27-2006, 09:38 PM Gionta just took a strong slapshot from Pandolfo's pass, the Devils' best offensive opportunity this game so far.
So far this game is living up to the term non-descript.
DevilFisch 01-27-2006, 09:41 PM Gelinas scores on the rebound on the Panthers' 2nd PP.
1-0 Florida.
Maybe that'll shake some life into the Devils.
sveiglar 01-27-2006, 09:44 PM Rot, Gelinas... Panthers are playing a lot better right now...
crashlanding 01-27-2006, 09:47 PM Looks like they're taking five days off...

Yeah, playing eight games in 13 days will do that to a team. That's ok, get rested in the four days and go right back at them.
By the way, the Panthers are off this whole weekend themselves, would it have killed the NHL to schedule the game on Saturday night? What kind of product are you putting out there when one team is near exhaustion?
Ronnie Bass 01-27-2006, 11:56 PM Why do Devils fans hate Chris Gratton so much?
Because we are constantly being rumored to trade for him over the past few years and I don't think anyone wants him. To be honest I can't blame us, we already have one underachieving center(Kozlov), why would we want two?
Look at his stats -46gp, 6g, 9a - with his size and talent, that's a crime, much like Kozlov's.

DevilFisch 01-28-2006, 03:22 AM Let's forget about this game ASAP. It SUCKED.
Time for some rest and then, eep, Ottawa next Tuesday.
Tao Jones 01-28-2006, 10:34 AM No doubt we should be up for Ottawa. Hope Marty doesn't have the contract performance falloff that Stevens did when he signed his big deal. Maybe he will learn from the Captain. Sounds like he didn't have a horrible game last night with 36 saves.

Heat entertain the Suns tonight. Two tenants to accomodate.
sveiglar 01-28-2006, 11:54 AM For the record, in case any Panther fans are lurking, full marks to Florida for the win; they came out and played hard for 60 minutes. New Jersey aren't often outshot, especially to the tune of 40 against. The Panthers didn't let up at all and earned the two points big time.

No, the Heat play in Miami @ American Airlines Center.
Panthers play @ Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise.
They used to play together in Miami at the Miami Arena, but that's empty and they both went to new ones.
Brooklyndevil 01-28-2006, 01:26 PM We can only hope that it was a case of the Devils tank being on empty. However, we're still a one line scoring team and until we add another winger we will have trouble scoring if the egg line goes cold. Lets just hope for a good showing against Ottawa. And yes, the Panther looked like a different team now that their healthy. They played a very good game.

I think if they moved kozlov up in place of marshall they could have at least a decent second line and a very good third line; I completely disagree with leaving marshall on second line;
I feel kozlov was handled well when he was demoted to fourth line, but now he has started shooting and should be rewarded with being paired w/ more offensive players.
crashlanding 01-28-2006, 07:05 PM I thought Kozlov's play was one of the brightest spots the past two games. He looked like he was playing with fire, I was kind of disappointed whenever I saw him playing well and then looked at his linemates. Not that Janssen or Ryznar are terrible, I just wished there was someone with more offensive skills on his line.
devsfan8 01-28-2006, 07:43 PM Koz has been shooting more as of late but he has also turned the puck over a little more then usual. He was always tough to take the puck from.
Nevertheless I agree with anyone who feels he should be moved back up to the 2nd line. Sensible idea to put him on the 4th to shoot the puck more in a role where he had no choice to, but he should be utilized on the second scoring line.
Right now Langenbrunner is our best scorer not on the EGG line.
thefiestygoat 01-28-2006, 10:11 PM I think a 2nd line of Parise-Kozlov-Langenbrunner would be effective. Change the 3rd line to Pandolfo-Madden-Brylin then. Your thoughts?

The Madden line is our best checking line. Breaking them up will hurt alot. I think the 2nd line should look something like this: Parise-Suglobov-Kozzy. Both brylin and marshall are third line material not really 2nd line. And the first game Suglobov had up here he was impressive. The only one to score a goal.

Well my ideal 2nd line is Parise-Kozlov-Suglobov but it appears that Suglobov is not going to get a chance any time soon. Pandolfo-Madden are great defensive fowards and work very well together. I feel that moving Brylin in Langenbrunner's spot will keep this line as a #1 defensive line. I don't think it would break up the chemistry at all.
My ideal line up is:
Elias-Gomez-Gionta
Parise-Kozlov-Suglobov
Pandolfo-Madden-Langenbrunner
Janssen-Brylin-Marshall
Without Suglobov:
Elias-Gomez-Gionta
Parise-Kozlov-Langenbrunner
Pandolfo-Madden-Brylin
Janssen-Rasmussen-Marshall

I have no criticism for the egg line. They are a great line. But that is why we need a good second line. We cant always rely on the first line plus they need a good boast from the 2nd line. I have beef with Kozlov. He really hasnt been impressing me this season at all but he is all we have to fill the 2nd line. The third player is suglobov. Our second line is a major problem. we either have to trade or have Suglobov come up. I dont think langenbrunner can help. Plus i think he is playing his role on the Madden line perfectly and can kill off penalties.
I have no beef with the madden line. They can stop some of the best lines in the league. So i dont think Brylin can really contribute to this line especially because of his size.

I agree 100%. Parise-Brylin-Marshall needs to be broken up, they are not a good 2nd line. I also would not even think about breaking EGG up.
I have beef with Kozlov. He really hasnt been impressing me this season at all but he is all we have to fill the 2nd line.
I'm also not a Kozlov fan and would trade him. I agree he should at least be on the 2nd line because he can't play to his potential on the 4th.
Seems like our only disagreement is the Madden line. I love them but I only want to break them up out of necessity to form a 2nd scoring line. I feel Brylin/Marshall would be just as good on defense as Langenbrunner on that line. The Pandolfo-Madden pair have always worked well together and with whoever was plugged into their line, so I wouldn't worry about chemistry. Langenbrunner may not be as good offensively as he once was but he is our 4th best offensive player, therefore I think he would add a lot to a 2nd scoring line. Anyway if it did not work, you could always just shift him back to the Pandolfo-Madden line and try to make a 2nd line out of other combos.

It seems so. I actually agree with the Marshall idea. He cant score to save his life but he knows how to check. brylin can be tried but i am just too doubtful about it. And Langenbrunner can bring his physical game to the table with the 2nd line. And he is definitly a better scorer than Marshall IMHO. And if none of this works out trade Kozlov and bring up Soglobov.
