Spengler CupDen 12-26-2005, 03:12 PM Anybody follows the game right now? Canada-Malkinless Metallurg 0:0 after the 1st period.... Den 12-26-2005, 03:19 PM 1:1 Den 12-26-2005, 04:43 PM 2:1 a shootout win for MMG Ste' 12-27-2005, 08:00 AM This one could be the right year for a Russian Team to win the Spengler Cup. Last one was CSKA in 1991 with coach Viktor Tichnov. I was really impressed by Travis Scott (39 saves) very good game last night. NCSENSFAN 12-27-2005, 05:32 PM What is this tourny. I have heard of it in the past but do not know a lot about it. What are the ages and team make up? MAF 12-27-2005, 06:43 PM The Spengler Cup is a tournament that takes place in the last week of the year with the final likely played on Dec 31st. The tournament has a long tradition (started in the 1920s or so) and takes place every year. AFAIK 5 teams are participating, among them is Team Canada which consists of players who play regularly in Switzerland or maybe Germany. Other teams this year are HC Davos (Swiss champion), Sparta Prag, Metallurg Magnitogorsk and Eisbären Berlin (German champion). I don't know exactly how the teams are picked, but the teams are among the best in Europe. shakes 12-27-2005, 07:09 PM Canada won today and if they beat Berlin on Thursday, most likely play in the gold medal game on Saturday, probably against Russia. Den 12-27-2005, 09:29 PM I don't lke how MMG is playing - slow, sloppy, poor passing game, uncharacteristic of them. And this happens every time they go to Spengler Cup. There's a theory in Russia that they always disappear because they wane away in the high altitude conditions.... I don't know how correct this is. Telecaster Fanatic 12-27-2005, 10:27 PM Travis Scott (G) was awesome for HC Metallurg Magnitogorsk, heh, didn't know former Maple Leaf Anders Eriksson played for them. Compared to the juniors, are any of these players from team Canada in this tournament NHL bound? No. It's mainly for players who play in Europe, although several players are on loan from NHL teams, the biggest names probably being Andy Chiodo, Ian White, Doug Lynch, and Brett Skinner. Thanks for clarifying. Den 01-01-2006, 02:27 AM All right.. i thought i heard that watching the first game. I was kinda half asleep, so maybe I heard wrong. Thanks for clarifying. Right now there are three foreighners in Magnitka: Travis Scott, Andreas Eriksson and Konstantin Simchuk. Was it not for Scott they would not be playing in the final of course. They were grogy in the first two-three games... I am not sure if Dave King changed their style that much but he certainly tightened them up defensively... | ||
