Still bitter much? I personally think Lou paid a premium to only have these guys signed for 2 years, as opposed to 3+ years like others [Hatcher, Palffy, Zhamnov, etc]. It's too easy to say we could have had Kariya or Demitra, but would those guys have had an interest in coming here?

And really, how many free agent signings have really paid off? For every Forsberg and Demitra, there seem to be many more guys like Zhamnov, Palffy, Gonchar that teams are already regretting signing.

Part of the reason why the Devils were so good in the 90s was that we never had to make free agent signings. One way or another, we were kinda stuck since our prospect pool was relatively dry.

i just think that much money for 2 regulars is a lot of money.

lou doesnt trade too much for guys that doesnt know our system. he usually trades back for people who have played for the devils in the past or teams such as dallas that knows defensive system

Mogilny is still worth $3.5 million. Maybe not for 4 years but he is for 2 years. he has 10 goals. What were people hoping for from him at this point? He lost a step but if it does not matter. Speed is not an issue if you can shoot the puck. Lemiuex and Gretzky were never speedsters and they had no problem scoring goals. Mogilny is an elite goal scorer still and he is 36. That is not 40 and he can still play. I cannot fault Lou for signing Mogilny. He wanted to play in NJ and he was extra fire power. I also actually like him of the Right of Madden/Pando. Why? Becasue they both play rock solid defensive games. good defense creates chances. Mogilny shoots the puck as he is still moving that throws off a lot of goalies. It is easy to place blame on him and many others with the teams struggles. but lets keep it limited to the true wastes.

I would have rather signed Larry Robinson for 2 years to play defense then Malakhov. He makes two or three big mistakes a game. His PP roll is okay but a defenseman needs to play defense. Especially on a team who lost its entire face on D. Malakhov sucks. he is a disgrace not worth a penny. It was a signing as an incentive to land our softie head coach and it has backfired in every which way possible. Even though many D were signed already there are still some I would rather have. Brad Bombardir I do not believe is playing in the NHL right now (could be wrong). He is a better defenseman then Malakhov and less then $1 million. Malakhov is the reason the Devils are over the cap. I truly hate him and they should drop him off in the Hudson River. I'd trade him for Poti in a second.

McGillis salary is actually not that bad. $2.2 Mill for a servicable d-men. It looks bad since he has not contributed this year and has been scratched for 5 stariaght and other periods consecutively during the season. He is still a solid physical presence. I however, do understand people who wish Lou would have chosen to spend that money elsewhere on the day Niedermayer left. McGillis has not worked out. His salary and service in the league will mean the Devils can trade him. he might get us **** on a shutter back, but it is $2.2 million off the cap.

The only truly horrific signing is Malakhov. A cheaper defenseman and good second line Center or forward with some passion and hard working ethic would have been better. No specific names come to mind. If Lou was set on adding Vets to this team to play with the young Gionta's and Parise's and Brylins's and Gomez's then Bondra would have worked as well.

What system? We have a system this season? Other then playing mediocre and heartless hockey? The Devils system was always defense first and transition. Good D leading to O chances. Malakhov and McGillis are not the answers in acheiving this.

Agree 100% and if you remember in 2001 last time Larry was at the Helm he strayed away from the system also.

Mogilny is still being over paid at 3.5 million; I don't think he has been a terrible pick-up but my point is; for 8 million in salary we have very little to show for it.

one guy is 7th dman

one guy who should be 7th dman

and a fragile winger who has lost a step

I would rather him went after one mega star

Re-read his statement.

Sundstrom: By Mega-star I assume you mean Forsberg. He probably wasn't interested in coming here.

EDIT: And the star he did go after hard was S. Nieder, and we all saw how that worked out.

Signed Foote

Exactly, would have been great, but Niedermayer left us in the lurch, if he had signed before Foote, Lou would have gone after Foote very hard.

I realize neids left lou for dead; it seemed though that neids wanted to play with his brother regardless of $$; Lou should have known this or neids was getting some payback for all the years of Lou's b.s.

I think he deliberately strung the devils out to dry.(neids)

I hope Ducks finishe last for the next 5 yrs straight

Nothing, I was just saying that most of the other prominent free agents signed for 3+ years. Mogilny, Malakhov, and McGillis all signed for 2, so I think Lamoriello paid a premium to get a shorter term deal with the three. And well, Ziggy Palffy's not a guy I'd commit long term to, and I liked him as a King.
