looooob 12-07-2005, 05:59 PM fyi number one: Calgary will likely be starting backup Phil Sauve tonight. he's been ok this year, but obviously he's not Kiprusoff
fyi number two: Flames have been having a dreadful time scoring goals lately...shutout twice on this roadtrip, but they are playing well enough defensively to be 2-1-1 on the trip
Tao Jones 12-07-2005, 06:08 PM Flames will be hungry for goals tonight.
We're facing a Calgary team whose offense hasn't scored more than 3 goals in a game in about a month but has gotten great goaltending and D (Kiprusoff was SICK last night). Given the way our season has gone, the Flames will win this game like 9-8.
I would like to see Marty pick up a SO against a struggling offense, especially given that he took the night off last night. I would also like to see a WWE-style mid period entrance for a certain hepatitits-ridden superstar.
Doc: ...SAVE, BRODEUR! as the puck is headmanned on out to center by Matvichuk. 30 seconds left on the Flames PP with one minute left to go in the game, all knotted up at 0.
Chico: What a save! I am by no means a gay man, Doc, but I would let Marty have his way with me if he wanted to. Just incredible stuff.
Doc: ...
Chico: Sorry. I don't know what got into me there. I'll leave now.
[Exit Chico, sobbing quietly]
Doc: Pitchforked into the Calgary zone and...oh my God...do you hear that?
THAT'S PATRIK ELIAS' MUSIC!
[Cue Asia's "Final Countdown." Patrik Elias descends from rafters in uniform as players on the ice gaze heavenward in astonishment. Elias buries the puck behind an Mikka Kiprusoff as the regulation buzzer sounds. Vladimir Malakhov spontaneously combusts.]
Ok, that last thing was superfluous. But it's my fantasy.
TaiMaiShu 12-07-2005, 06:20 PM just a tad wierd
NJ_Devil_Boy 12-07-2005, 06:26 PM NJ better show up in the 1st period tonight. The 17-4 shot advantage yesterday was pathetic... :shakehead
Jared Ramsden 12-07-2005, 06:28 PM fyi number one: Calgary will likely be starting backup Phil Sauve tonight. he's been ok this year, but obviously he's not Kiprusoff
fyi number two: Flames have been having a dreadful time scoring goals lately...shutout twice on this roadtrip, but they are playing well enough defensively to be 2-1-1 on the trip
Sauve is confirmed to be getting the start tonight, which is a break for the Devils with the way Kiprusoff has been playing. Yes, the Flames are struggling to score goals lately, and with the way Brodeur has been playing as of late, that bodes well for the Devils tonight. Unfortunately for myself, I have to work tonight :banghead: ,so I will be catching the game when I get home. While I am a Calgarian, I am a true blue Devils fan, and will cheering on my Devils tonight! :yo:
dkball7 12-07-2005, 06:38 PM can everything just click for one game....please
See Lighting, Tampa Bay 11/25/05
Edit: Sauve starter?
6-3 Devils.
TeMPZ 12-07-2005, 06:46 PM I'm going with 2-1 (could go to either team) and the real loser will be the fans. its going to be a snoozer.

even if that happens tonight..... The game is on MSG network for reasons i cant fathom. So you wont even be able to tell it's Patrik Elias, you'll think it's Peter Stasny.
MSG NETWORK SUCKS COW *****

Let me refer you to the "New Jersey Devils Are Boooooring..." sticky at the top of the page, where you can post like this ad infinitum and we don't have to pay attention to you.
sundstrom32* 12-07-2005, 07:32 PM I think at the very least robinson should shake up the lines tonight.
I think marshall should see sometime on the first line, give gomez a kick in the ***,
Tao Jones 12-07-2005, 07:37 PM McGillis scratched again
sundstrom32* 12-07-2005, 07:47 PM creating some office and much more effort.. still some stupid passes on pp but i can live with this so far.
need the pp to get going here

"Final Countdown" was done by Europe, not Asia. Get your bands straight!
dkball7 12-07-2005, 08:00 PM Nice "Langenbrunnarian" pass to Almo for the goal.
Europe, not Asia.
You would say that, you Eurocentric western imperialist.
Seriously, you got me. I never thought I would make that mistake. I'm in the librarium toiling away on a paper, so can y'all keep me posted on interesting developments that won't turn up on the stat sheet?
devildan 12-07-2005, 08:07 PM Tsn announcers just said two things that I found funny.
1) Phaneuf is Stevens but with more offensive upside. How quickly people forget how good Stevens early in his career.
2) Stevens number will be retired in January.(!) Did I miss something here, or are they just wrong.
NJDevils#4 12-07-2005, 08:09 PM Good to see the Devils pretty much dominating a hockey game (for the most part). Havent seen this in a few games

Shut up you idiot, Calgary just scored. :shakehead
Good to see the Devils pretty much dominating a hockey game (for the most part). Havent seen this in a few games
Calgary has 1 SOG with 2 minutes left. A little different than last night's debacle.
Edit: I hate myself.
NJDevils#4 12-07-2005, 08:11 PM Lol I just got a warning for calling myself the "i dash dash dash dash word"
dkball7 12-07-2005, 08:13 PM 1-1 even though we totally dominated. Horrible goal given up by Marty, he has to be more solid down low.
crashlanding 12-07-2005, 08:14 PM Man you guys are worse than Chico.
Chico: "Man the Devils are playing well tonight, especially Brodeur"
Doc: "SCOOOOOORE"
Chico: "I think I did it again..."
Brooklyndevil 12-07-2005, 08:16 PM Good period by the Devils and a softy by Marty. :shakehead
But at least the effort was there and that makes the game enjoyable. :)

Chico: "Man the Devils are playing well tonight, especially Brodeur"

Seriously...ugh...
I remember a couple time during the 03-04 season we jinxed a couple of Marty's shutouts late in the 3rd. We just gotta STF up sometimes... :dunno:
crashlanding 12-07-2005, 08:18 PM Good period overall. Good puck movement, finally the devils have more power on the pp than the team killing the penalty. They also put up a pretty effective forecheck and are winning races to pucks.
AND I CAN'T BELIEVE PEOPLE ARE THROWING CHECKS
crashlanding 12-07-2005, 08:22 PM Stan suggests putting Kozlov on the point for the pp:
All I can picture is him trying to stickhandle away from a rushing Iginla...yikes.
The Omen* 12-07-2005, 08:25 PM I'm off to see the Ranger's game. At least they'll have fight. Was Igilna taking Marty's order that the defense just let him go? :shakehead
Go Hawks!!!
Dogbert 12-07-2005, 08:26 PM Wiemer and Simon are making me long for Ritchie and MacDonald to get back in there.
Dogbert 12-07-2005, 08:29 PM McGuire's Monster, 1st period: Philippe Sauvé.
He was so good that they spelled his name wrong in the graphic.
crashlanding 12-07-2005, 08:31 PM Wow, two terrible penalties in five seconds, one a bad call, one a bad rule.
Dogbert 12-07-2005, 08:32 PM And that's what happens when Dion actually hits the net.
crashlanding 12-07-2005, 08:32 PM That was a nice bit of interference on Pandolfo forechecking.
Oh look they just made it 3-1.
dkball7 12-07-2005, 08:33 PM Brodeur being WAY outplayed by Sauve. Is that 3 goals on 4 shots!!!!!????
And that's what happens when Dion actually hits the net.
Somebody needs to remind Marty that 2-3 is a good night at the plate, not a good goals/shots ratio.
Edit: This is the second time the Flames have scored as I'm posting. Done for the night.

You forget, he's 3 for 3!
Unthinkable 12-07-2005, 08:40 PM Tough game for Matvichuk tonight. I don't know what was said between periods in the Devils lockerroom, but it doesn't appear to be working early on in the 2nd. Interesting admission during the intermission: Stan Fischler supports players being publically called out by Larry Robinson right now. Larry looked like he was going to throw up on the bench after the Matvichuk delay of game penalty.
DevilsFan38 12-07-2005, 08:40 PM 3 goals on 4 shots?!?
I can't watch here, how are we playing (is Marty really looking that bad)?
You forget, he's 3 for 3!
Sad part is, he had just gone 2-3 as I was posting that.

I'd rather they just trade these guys. Most likely they'll be gone anyway. Any public complaining can only lessen their value.
Unthinkable 12-07-2005, 08:47 PM Has Larry not been doing that? That's not... "Larry" to me.
Robinson goes out of his way to protect his players from some of the blame at times. He's notable for deflecting much of the negativity with the hopes of taking pressure off his men.
crashlanding 12-07-2005, 08:49 PM Wow, a goalie's second favorite sound after the post.
That whistle saved us.
sundstrom32* 12-07-2005, 08:49 PM I know you are.... think we might need Hale?? I do
crashlanding 12-07-2005, 08:51 PM Wow, a goalie's second favorite sound after the post.

I'm done as well.
4-1
Dogbert 12-07-2005, 08:52 PM Well, that might have been called... but I'm not going to complain.
Unthinkable 12-07-2005, 08:52 PM 4-1 Flames. White falls down. Paul Martin looked shellshocked afterwards. This is ugly.
DevilsFan38 12-07-2005, 08:52 PM What happened?
A_Mack17 12-07-2005, 08:53 PM Yep screw this! Ive had enough... :shakehead
DevilFisch 12-07-2005, 08:53 PM They played so well in period #1, I come home from class early and turn on the TV, watch this period until now they're up 4-1 with 6:40 left.
I think NJ wants to get this week over for them. Yikes. (I won't be overtly negative, as that doesn't really do anything of value.)
Rakiet* 12-07-2005, 08:53 PM Iginla breaking out against the Devils with Brodeur? Never would have thought it. I'm surprised given NJ's obvious defensive reputation. 4-1...thats only 3 shots to come back, you never know devils' fans.
Dogbert 12-07-2005, 08:55 PM Dammit, Wiemer, get off my team.
PEli* 12-07-2005, 08:57 PM Listen to the bronx cheers for Marty. Do these fans not understand that he busts his *** all year long to make this team as good as it was? Where's the appreciation? Bunch of jokers.
DevilFisch 12-07-2005, 08:58 PM PEli: Considering how much tickets cost, can't really be surprised to hear boos when the team decided to turn a terrible 2nd performance instead of building on that 1st period.
Iginla breaking out against the Devils with Brodeur? Never would have thought it. I'm surprised given NJ's obvious defensive reputation. 4-1...thats only 3 shots to come back, you never know devils' fans.
You're right, nothing is over yet. Nobody gave up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor*
But with how punchless they have been on the PP and in general so far this period, it's looking grim.
*Yes, I know today is the anniversery of the Pearl Harbor bombings; I was referencing Animal House, not being insensitive.
Unthinkable 12-07-2005, 08:58 PM They are just jeering the fact that the thank you fans! banner has been removed from the ice. Nope thats not it. Its the devils defense and goaltending drawing the ire of the hometeam fans.
Unthinkable 12-07-2005, 09:06 PM Lol I just got a warning for calling myself the "i dash dash dash dash word"
Anyone else getting warnings tonight on here that they can't explain? I've got one for god knows what now. This place is quickly going downhill.
Unthinkable 12-07-2005, 09:09 PM What happened? White was tripped up along the boards by Iginla's stick before Jarome skated in and put a puck in the net off of Paul Martin's skate. It was just brutal.
ratsgirl 12-07-2005, 09:10 PM Anyone else getting warnings tonight on here that they can't explain? I've got one for god knows what now. This place is quickly going downhill.
You didn't get any warnings for anything. Nor did NJDevils #4.
just to clarify for everyone:
if you see something next to your username labelled "warnings", it references the number of warnings you've received in the past. Actual current warnings would show up as "warning points". And you'd still get a PM about it.
don't shoot the messenger.

Rakiet* 12-07-2005, 09:22 PM Gretzky and Bettman are at the game.
I hope Gretzky keeps coming to Flames games to motivate Iginla to get things going. My guess is the word got out to Iginla and he's stepped up today because of it, that said it is a game factor..
Unthinkable 12-07-2005, 09:22 PM Rafalski has 4 giveaways and 3 missed shots so far. 2 categories you don't generally want to lead a team in through 40 minutes. I thought he was one of the leading contenders to really step up his game in the absence of Scott Niedermayer before the season started.
Stat of the night
Giveaways:
NJ 10
CAL 0
Missed shots:

I'm not excusing their booing him (I hate booing of all kinds), but you can see why a "booer" would boo him tonight. He's been absolutly terrible, and has looked a bit indifferent after each of the goals he let up.
Rakiet* 12-07-2005, 09:42 PM #1 star of the game should go to sauve given all the shots the devils are firing, can't watch this one today, but I imagine theres been some fantastic chances for the Devils

That's what makes (making, there's less than a minute) tonight so frustrating to watch. The Devils have gotten many opportunities, shots, and power plays and only one goal to show for it.
All teams are due a bad night now and again; hopefully they'll play stronger against Colorado.
Dogbert 12-07-2005, 10:00 PM #1 star of the game should go to sauve given all the shots the devils are firing, can't watch this one today, but I imagine theres been some fantastic chances for the Devils
Actually, although they've had their shots, there haven't been all that many good chances in the Calgary zone. A lot of the Devils' shots have been of the right-into-the-C variety. Sauvé has come up big when we've needed him to tonight, though.
tangible_faith 12-07-2005, 10:01 PM I don't get some of you people. They win two in a row, they still have a chance and have a good team. They lose two in a row and they suck and it's time to rebuild...

In the playoffs. Seriously, 13-12-2 isn't a terrible record and it's not as if the Devils are deep in the hole. There's a whole lot of hockey left to be played.
Oh, and the Devils have beaten the Rangers, Canadiens, Lightning, and the Sabres too. How quickly one forgets...

I appreciate the optimism, but taking one game in four from playoff teams gets us to game 5 in the first round IF we make the playoffs. I really hope they turn it around and start to win tough games, but right now the effort just isn't there.
Hey, if they keep playing though, I'll keep watching. I may have less hair by the time this season is over though.

Tbg1515 12-08-2005, 02:49 AM I was at the game and there was no life in the stands as well as on the ice.......Doc said one game about 4 weeks ago, in the new NHL down by 3 goals with 6:00 left is not that hard to come by, but watching these devils play tonite, im afraid as much of a devils fan i am they cant come back from 2 down with 10:00 left.........I love the Devs and am gonna stand behind them even if we fall to dead last in the conf.
One final note, was out having drinks with buddies, and saw Marshall, Martin, Ramussen, & Brown........at a bar in my town!
Well forget about these 2 losses, and rebound big against Colorado, i say 5-1 friday nite, i have faith the devils can do that!
And maybe the Strangers will lose 10 straight and we can get back to REAL NHL!
The New NHL sucks B****s, bring back hockey! Then we'll see how well Jags and the Strangers will be doing when we throw some contact back into this sport

They are 1-3 against the Rangers. 1-1 with the Sabres, 1-1 with the Lightning (a blowout for each team), 1-0 against the Habs without Kovalev. So? IF the Devs make the playoffs they are first round exits with a middle draft pick. Excuse me while I get the champagne.

Neither blind optimism nor overbearing pessimism on our parts is going to help the team get better. But the latter will bring down all our moods, and the former is likely to elicit only the latter...it's a vicious cycle, really.
Let's just all agree that there is room for vast improvement.

Please, while this NHL has to find the line between physical play and what a penalty is at least we are seeing REAL hockey again in that skill and skating have been reintroduced after a 10-12 yr absence and are once again the major determining factor in who wins hockey games instead of watching the disgusting level of play that we've had to over the last decade.
Marty has struggled big time now that he's facing high quality shots and Lou made some terrible signings and as a result the Devils have no wiggle room to correct their mistakes this summer in constructing this roster.
And instead of taking stupid shots at the NYR why don't you just acknowledge that the NYR of this year work harder on a nightly basis then does the Devils and have had way better goaltending and that is the reason they are where they are and why the Devils have struggled! :sarcasm:
Dogbert 12-08-2005, 10:30 AM Here's another question: where are all the fans? Paid attendance was 13 332, but our radio guy estimated that there were between 7 and 8 000 people actually in the building, with much less than that at the end of it.

No body cares about Hockey here.
Its pretty much true for all of the US. with the exception of a few small pockets.
You want proof, think of how salacious the U.S. media is.
They don’t even pick up the Mike Danton story.
If Mike Danton was a football player, basketball player, baseball player, golfer, NASCAR drive, High school athlete, ESPN, CNN, FOX News would be leading every night with the story.
But No one here cares, there isn't even a mention of it.

All teams sell out every game and will be for years to come. TV ratings are second to none. Baseball is up there as well and it use to prodominantly be #1 but I think it is now football.
But what football and baseball are here, is what hockey is in Canada. Nobody in Toronto cares about the Raptors or Argonauts.
Of Course the lockout did not help anything here. I think a 12th rerun of Poker does better then OLN does for NHL hockey.
The Devils have always had attendance issues. They play in a Suburb as opposed to a City. There is no public transportaion to the Arena which is in the middle of nowhere. Who the heck wants to drive to a game after working 8 hours? I would but I am one of a small group of loyal hockey fans just like other people who are part of this forum.
The Devils are the only team in the league that have an entire lower section at the same price range for a ticket of $90. This is why it is embarrassing a lot to see clumps of empty seats on TV in the lower bowl of the CAA. It is not as empty upstairs where tickets are much less expensive.
There are losts of factors.
Newark will help. They will sell out more weekends and get respectable weekday crowds.
This of course also is based on them winning. When a team wins the fans will come (unless the team plays in the Swamps of East Rutherford)

I am right there with you buddy.
Basketball is the most brutal of all. It hurts my teeth with all the squeaking on the wood floors. Plus the last 2 minutes takes an hour. Also any sport where athletes wear a tank top and shorts is not a real sport. (just kidding :) )

funny thing is i had to resort to watch the nba during the lockout. being asian, you almost have to be a yao ming fan. yup not a good year
Tbg1515 12-08-2005, 11:04 PM Please, while this NHL has to find the line between physical play and what a penalty is at least we are seeing REAL hockey again in that skill and skating have been reintroduced after a 10-12 yr absence and are once again the major determining factor in who wins hockey games instead of watching the disgusting level of play that we've had to over the last decade.
:sarcasm:
Yes the Rangers are a hard working group. but if you put the team they have this year, in the league 2 yrs ago, lets see how good they really are.......I'm admire what Tom Renney has done with that team, but i'm still saying it is because of the new rules, They brag about the rangers being something like 10 games over .500, but really they are what 4 or 5 over .500 because of the SO losses as they count as regular losses.......Shootouts sucks, too many penalties drag the game on, there are only a few rules i like but most of them suck.....
