Congrats to Foote -- he's certainly earned it through the years in the NHL. Living under the shadow of Sakic had him penned as the go-to A in Colorado, but now Foote has a chance to save a sinking ship
It's no question that his play will be the first to dictate the order in the locker room. Foote's a class act and a very well respected player throughout the league. In addition, he's been a vital part of two winning Cup teams.
Couldn't be happier
DougKnowsBest 12-06-2005, 11:49 AM I'm sorry, but its like being named captain of a 21ft ski boat with a outboard motor, that doesnt run properly all the time.

CBJFan in Cincy 12-06-2005, 01:03 PM Per Bluejackets.com:
Blue Jackets Name Veteran Defenseman Adam Foote Team Captain
Newly acquired Sergei Fedorov joins Rick Nash and David Vyborny as club's alternate captains
COLUMBUS, OHIO - The Columbus Blue Jackets announced today that defenseman Adam Foote will serve as the fourth captain in franchise history and that newly acquired center Sergei Fedorov will join left wing Rick Nash and right wing David Vyborny as alternate captains on a rotating basis.
Foote is playing in his 14th NHL season and first with the Blue Jackets. He is a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Colorado Avalanche (1996 and 2001) and won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2002 Olympic Games. He has registered 58-181-239 and 1,170 penalty minutes in 821 career NHL games, including 3-2-5 and 30 penalty minutes in 22 games with Columbus.
A native of Toronto, Ontario, Foote spent his first 13 seasons with the the Colorado/Quebec organization and is the Avalanche's all-time leader in playoff games played with 154. He has also represented Team Canada at the 1998 Olympic Games and at the 1996 and 2004 World Cup of Hockey, where he captured silver and gold medals, respectively.
A 15-year NHL veteran, Fedorov is a six-time All-Star, three-time Stanley Cup champion, two-time winner of the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL's top defensive forward and was the 1994 Hart Memorial Trophy (most valuable player) and Lester B. Pearson Award (outstanding player as voted by NHLPA members) winner. On November 30 at Minnesota, he became the first Russian-born player to appear in 1,000 NHL games and has registered 431-592-1,023 and 637 penalty minutes in 1,001 career games with Detroit, Anaheim and Columbus.
Fedorov has tallied 50-113-163 and 113 penalty minutes in 162 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, ranking first among all players in assists and second in points (Joe Sakic, 169) in playoff scoring since 1990-91. He was an integral part of Detroit Red Wings teams that captured Stanley Cup championships in 1997, 1998 and 2002. He is also a veteran of two Olympic Games, helping Russia win the bronze medal in 2002 and silver medal in 1998.
The Blue Jackets return to action on Thursday against the New York Islanders. Game time at Nationwide Arena is 7 p.m., with FSN Ohio's Ice Breaker pregame show starting at 6:30 p.m. The game will also be broadcast live on the Blue Jackets Radio Network and flagship stations WBNS-AM Sports Radio 1460 the Fan and WWCD-FM, CD101.

Seeing as what our captiancy has done to players before, thats doubtful.

That trend has to change sometime down the road. Here's hoping it's now.
WrightOn 12-06-2005, 02:51 PM I was hoping someone would 'spread some cheer' about one of the only positives we have to post about.
Congratulations, Foote.
(Samkow sucks.)

Agreed!
This guy has been defence partners with Paul Coffey, Ray Bourque, Rob Blake and many others.
He roomed with Patrick Roy on the road for Roy's 8 years in Colorado.
He was regarded as the team leader on a team with Roy, Sakic, Blake etc.
He has more points in the playoffs than Odelein, Whitney, and Richardson combined (close enough anyways), and was named the first team all star in the World Cup of Hockey.
It's a good choice and hopefully is a starting point to try and be competitive for the rest of the year and build for next year.
Millions Livio 12-06-2005, 09:33 PM I do think he'll make a big difference. A captain is the one who leads, look how Luke played, that's where he leaded the team. I think Foote will be a much better captain and a much better leader.
CBJSlash 12-06-2005, 09:43 PM Foote has a fire. Something we've never seen in captain. Odelein was captain since he stayed with us and we were happy. Whitney was captain, but has little that screams captain to me. Luke is a quiet, respected player, enough said.
Foote has a fire, he is a top player in the league, and he isn't afraid to speak. He also is a proven winner in every place he has played.
stoney17 12-06-2005, 10:00 PM Does anybody else find it strange and even a bit revolting that on the CBJ website, the picture of Foote that accompanies the story of him being named captain is him in a Team Canada uniform? It just seems to me that if you have been named captain of a NHL club the picture would be in your team sweater.

He is Canadian, after all.
I have no qualms over it, theoretically some of our guys are going to be in international sweaters come February while the NHL season is still underway.
FakePlasticJackets 12-06-2005, 11:42 PM Rumor mill -- There's talk on Long Island that Mike Milbury is less than enthused with the play of defensemen Janne Niinimaa and Alexei Zhitnik and that Pittsburgh GM Craig Patrick might be willing to swap one of his offensive defensemen (Sergei Gonchar or Dick Tarnstrom) for some defensive stability. If that's the case, both GMs might be interested in Columbus Blue Jackets' stay-at-home defenseman Adam Foote.

Not sure what this is about. Pretty odd timing.

SgtPepper 12-07-2005, 01:33 AM Footer deserves this, as many of us Avs fans thought that at times HE was the captain and Joe was just wearin an "A".
Columbus did make a good pickup in the offseason, and as an Avs fan I hate you guys for it, but Adam Foote DESERVED his pay raise (as opposed to some of the other players that received what I thought was bloated paychecks) and I am genuinely happy that he finally has received what he has worked hard for.
I sincerely hope that he can give you guys some direction and help your team out as the Captaion
Cheers to Adam!

I saw that blurb on the NHL website, as well. I was going to start a thread about it, but then changed my mind when after re-reading it, I decided that the writer was trying to make a statement more about the Isles defensemen vs. Foote. I think what the writer was trying to say was that if a team wants to improve defensively, they'd be better off pursuing Foote vs. either Niiminaa or Zhitnik, which I agree with. Now, would MacLean be willing to deal Foote at this point? That's another story, IMO.
CBJSlash 12-07-2005, 07:11 AM Well we did just give him the 'C', that means he'll be moved in the next year.
He does have a no trade clause, and as we have seen with Richardson we will not put our captain through waivers.
X0ssbar 12-07-2005, 07:37 AM No way we move Foote this year. I think he is here for the long haul and he seems like a guy who would take more pleasure in helping to right the ship rather than jumping off it.

I would have said the same thing about Sydor
Granted Sydor is not the player Foote is, but if someone wanting to make the push offered a couple bluechip prospects/young players I think we'd have to at least consider it. It would save 4.6 to the cap too so it'd be like we are able to go sign another player of Adam Foote's caliber.
I don't see Foote being moved though he brings too much to the table. I sure would like to hear the offers though that would be a lot of fun.

I agree. Foote is an honorable guy, I think we honor his contract to the end. Congrats Footer.
P.S. Time to change the avy Shelf.
Nordique 12-07-2005, 08:19 AM I heard a bit of an interview last night on the drive home on 1460, with Foote. He compared this team to the 94-95 Nordiques. Not a perfect comparison, buts its somewhat on the mark when you think about the youth they had on that team, and Nash, Brule, Picard, Zherdev, Platt, Klesla, etc.
donniedarko 12-07-2005, 08:46 AM Just in case this hasn't been mentioned, Foote has a no-trade clause in his contract. So if he doesn't want to go...he won't go.

So did Marchant.
donniedarko 12-07-2005, 09:28 AM So did Marchant.
But you don't waive a player the calibur of Foote. He has a lot more value than Marchant. He would get snatched up by the first team that sees him, as long as they have room under the cap.

Thanks for version 2.0.
In response to that blurb on NHL.com, I'd like to ask whether or not the Blue Jackets would consider getting out of Foote's salary? I personally don't think that the Isles are a great match with y'all (and agree with a poster above that the blurb is more a statement on the play of Niinimaa than the possibility of the Isles trading for Foote) but could he be available?

I guess that anyone can be had for the right price; anything's possible this season. I would be very surprised if Foote was moved, as the team needs all the leadership it can get right now.
