Here is a place where we can discuss what is going on in Cincy as well as any news we have about any one of our prospects playing there.

I will try to update boxscores as much as I can.

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Pierre Parenteau had a goal and an assist and Ilya Bryzgalov made 28 saves to lead the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks to a season-opening 3-0 win over the Toronto Roadrunners Saturday at Cincinnati Gardens.

Parenteau, an 11th-round pick by Anaheim in 2001, earned his first professional point with an assist on Chris Armstrong's game-opening goal at 11:28 of the first period and added a power-play tally 6:59 into the third.

Bryzgalov, appearing in his 100th career game with Cincinnati, stopped six shots in the first period, six shots in the middle period and 16 more in the third en route to his sixth career shutout.

Tony Martensson recorded a pair of assists for the Ducks, who improved to 4-3-0-0 all-time in season-openers, including 3-1-0-0 at Cincinnati Gardens.

The Ducks begin a three-game road trip Thursday in San Antonio.

Looks like Martensson will continue to pile up assists.

Cincinnati Kids should be worth paying attention to this year.

I figured Armstrong would make a contribution on Cincy, even on the second line. I also expected high things for Aucoin and Hankinson. Hope they keep it up.

Not only did BM improve Anaheim, but he decided and made Cincy into a Calder cup contender. Hope they go far in the playoffs.

Heres a writeup from our guy in Cincy at Mighty Pond:

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Casey Hankinson was named captain of the Cincy Mighty Ducks this week. Casey has spent all of his career in the Blackhawks organization. He is 27, from Edina Minnesota. Watched him in scrimmages, and also against Cincy Ducks, has great ability, esp. for a small guy. Also, his attitude is great. Talked to him about being in Anaheim's organization, and he is jazzed. He is glad to be in a forward thinking organization, and one on the move. He also, strangely enough, likes Cincinnati. He is pleased with the different local flavor and also with the terrain of the city. He seems like a great, personable guy.

Assistant captains included former KY T-Blade (among other teams) Chris Armstrong.

The other A went to Todd Reirden, who is a cool guy, and at one time could really have been a force, but dude needs to hang it up and get to the broadcast booth. His positioning is slow, his skating is slow...he is just slow. He is also injured too much. I sense we will be seeing Todd in the stands alot and the A on someone else's sweater.

Dont reply to me if you dont like what he says, he kinda tore Reirden to shreds at the end there, not sure if thats necessary, but everything else he says is direct watching the cincy ducks play impressions

It wouldn't be the first time. Nice job Hockey News, bozos.

Better than Sports Illustrated. I've read in that magazine and my little brothers' SI for kids total predictions of Fedorov winning the Richard race with 33 goals, Fedorov being named Hart winner, and Fedorov a major condidate for Art Ross(top 3 or something like that). I also remember last year when they predicted San Jose 2nd overall, a COL-PHI STF and Anaheim down at 19th OA. Brutal ones there.

As for THN, they aren't the greatest at predicting(Feds at under 60 points or something like that, Lindros at 76, etc.) but they are pretty smart. I think Cincy will do well this year, and hopefully I'm not wrong.

We took 58 shots and their goalie saves 56.

Eddy Ferhi was in goal. 29 shots 25 saves.

Kunitz first AHL goal.
Perrault first AHL assist, point.

They must be playing well getting 58 shots...they just ran into a goalie who decided to have a career night with 56 saves.

Again from Mark_G at Mighty Pond regarding the Toronto game.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
FROM THE SEAT PERPECTIVE OF THE GAME VS. ROADRUNNERS...

Ducks Win!!! Ducks Win!!!

Wow! What a game Saturday night vs. the Toronto Roadrunners, affiliates of the Edmonton Oilers. Ilja Bryzgalov was awesome in net, stopping between 28shots, en route to a 3-0 shutout of the Runners. Our new Captain, Casey Hankinson, was named first star of the game, after contributing physical play and an assist on one of the goals.

The Ducks, prematurely, look like they could have a real good team this year. I hope Hankinson and the Gang lead the ducks to more victories.

What impressed me the most was the upgrade in defense. Unlike the last few years, defense seems to have finally come to be the core of this team. Even last year, under Shaw, the system that Babcock started was not carried over. This year, it seems Shaw has got the message, and maybe more of the players he needs to follow the system. Keith Aucoin was impressive in his D play, especially for his diminutive size. Also, Mark Popovic continued to show why he WILL BE recalled before the end of hte season. The defense was stellar, blocking shots, taking away rebounds, and pressuring passes and shooters. It was a well played game, and I hope it continues.

Kevin Forbes

Gornick has Air Force committments that prevent him from playing a lot
He only played 54 games last season. It's possible he may not even be in the California area, but it's hard to say.

O'Brien? I'm not sure. He could be not ready or not as good as hoped for. But the Defense for Cincy is pretty weak after Mottau and Popovic, so one would think any help would be appreciated.

Hey Forbesy Mark_G got back to your question on Mighty Pond, heres what he said.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
I believe Parenteau and Alen were nursing some injuries, some aches and pains, but in the case of Parenteau, Anaheim is wanting Holmqvist to get minutes, and he (meaning Parenteau) might be the odd guy out right now....

I have not seen Brian Gornick at the Gardens, so I am not sure if he is back from his Air Force duty requirements....and, he might be another victim of the numbers game, as might O'Brien....

Keith Aucoin also scored for the Ducks, who extended their unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1-0) with their first road win of the season.

MARK'S REMARKS

I did not go to this game, as it was in Illinois...However, I do have a few comments...Ilja is looking better than ever at net, and it makes me wonder if anaheim is not going to start thinking about pulling a trade for one of their top goalies, and sending Ilja up. I do not think this would be a good idea....as he is still not quite there yet, as it were....Mike Mottau showed some scoring punch, showing what an offensive defenseman can do.....and Hankinson continues to impress...and yes, Cincy Duck fans, that was Brendan Yarema you heard and saw playing for the Wolves...our loss is chicago's gain...Of course, the Ducks came back against this team, and that speaks well for us, as it is the first road win, and it came against a team that has only lost one game....Go Ducks!!!!

From the Cin. Mighty Ducks fan site:

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Cincinnati Mighty Ducks loaned left wing Brian Gornick to the United States National team and center Igor Pohanka to ECHL San Diego on Thursday.

Gornick, a ninth-round pick by Anaheim in 1999, has not appeared in a game with Cincinnati this season. The 6-foot-5, 210-pounder had two goals and four assists with 14 penalty minutes in 54 games with Cincinnati last season.

Pohanka, a second-round pick by New Jersey in 2001, had one assist in six games with Cincinnati this season.

The Ducks roster now stands at 22 players, including two goaltenders, eight defensemen and 12 forwards.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I have been wondering what was going on with Gornick...why U.S. National Team??

Pohanka was scratched 4 of the last 5 games. This may be the first time that I can think of that we will have a legitimate prospect playing at the "AA" level. Hopefully he will get lots of ice time for ECHL San Diego.

This definetly shows the depth of the organization.

Yeah. Great job by BM to go out and sign all these guys, like Aucoin and Hankinson, to make Cincy a great team. One, Hankinson, is Cincy's captain, and the other, Aucoin, will probably be Cincy's leading scorer, unless maybe Smirnov stays down.

From the home office of the Cincy Ducks:

Severson, Martensson lead Ducks past Phantoms 5-3

PHILADELPHIA, Pa -- Cam Severson had two goals and an assist, and Tony Martensson scored the go-ahead goal to lead the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks to a 5-3 win against the Philadelphia Phantoms Wednesday at the Wachovia Center.

Mike Mottau added a goal and an assist and Cory Pecker and Joel Stepp each chipped in with a pair of assists to help Cincinnati win for the fourth time in five games.

Martensson's goal, his second of the season, came with 1:45 remaining in the second period to give the Ducks a 4-3 lead. Martensson now has points in five of his last six games, recording two goals and five assists in that stretch.

Eddy Ferhi stopped 34 shots, including all 10 that he faced in the third period, to record his first victory of the season.

The win was only the third for the Ducks in 22 games in Philadelphia against the Phantoms (3-16-2-1).

Ian MacNeil, Kirby Law and Patrick Sharp scored for Philadelphia, which lost its second straight game and fell to 3-6-1-1 in its last 11.

Neil Little, who entered the game 13-2-2 in 18 career games against Cincinnati, surrendered four goals on 19 shots before being pulled in favor of Antero Niittymaki in the third period.

The Ducks and Phantoms complete a two-game series Friday at 7:05 p.m. at the Wachovia Spectrum.

MARK'S REMARKS
Wow, the ducks got a rare win in Philly....Great job, men...now keep it up...however, it looks like Ferhi had little help at Defense, with over 35 shots on goal....Come on, guys, you have to help the goalie.....Ferhi is getting steadily better, and he has quick reflexes....What? Severson with two goals? Could a hat trick be the next thing? Pecker and Stepp are showing themselves to be the point men on the team, along with Keith Aucoin. These smaller than average guys are getting the job done...Stepp is a very interesting surprise, and has worked hard to get where he is...He is moving past some other higher touted ducks on the notice of other teams, and on the depth chart....

Neil Little? Shouldn't he be coaching the Phantoms, and not playing for them?

Keep him. He will put more pressure on Giguere one day than Gerber is able to. If Giguere slumps again, call Bryzgalov up and give him some games. Giguere will see that there are other options and the coach and GM will see if Bryzgalov is ready and can react accordingly.

Keep him. He will put more pressure on Giguere one day than Gerber is able to. If Giguere slumps again, call Bryzgalov up and give him some games. Giguere will see that there are other options and the coach and GM will see if Bryzgalov is ready and can react accordingly.

Seems you guys do not appreciate having one of the best backups in the NHL :dunno:

we appreciate Gerber so much that we would like him to go somewhere and be a #1. The way I see it is we have our #1 goalie, Giguere being backed up by a goalie who could play as #1 goalie and in the minors we have a player who will soon need to play in the NHL because he's on his way to becoming a #1 goalie.
We are very fortunate, but I don't think we'll be able to carry Gerber and Bryz for much longer.

Martensson and Holmqvist had the goals, Bryz took the loss, allowing 3 goals on 35 shots.

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Cincinnati Mighty Ducks right wing Alexei Smirnov will miss four to six weeks with a right shoulder sprain.

Smirnov was injured December 6 at Utah and was not in the lineup the following night against the Grizzlies.

A first-round pick by Anaheim in 2000, Smirnov has five goals and five assists with 12 penalty minutes in 15 games with Cincinnati this season. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder has also appeared in eight games with Anaheim this season, recording one assist with two penalty minutes.

The Ducks have been without center Joel Perrault since he suffered a knee injury November 15. Perrault, who has three goals and five assists with two penalty minutes in 14 games, is expected to return to the lineup this weekend.

Cincinnati also recalled defenseman Andy Reierson from ECHL San Diego.

KUNITZ NAMED FIFTH THIRD BANK MIGHTY DUCKS
PLAYER OF THE MONTH FOR DECEMBER

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Cincinnati left wing Chris Kunitz, who tallied eight points (four goals, four assists) in 10 games, has been named the Fifth Third Bank Mighty Ducks Player of the Month for December.

Kunitz tied Casey Hankinson for first on the club in points and Cory Pecker for first in goals in December. He equaled a season-high with a four-game point streak (four goals, three assists) December 12-19, including three consecutive multiple-point games December 14-19.

Signed by Anaheim as a free agent, the 24-year-old Regina, Saskatchewan native leads the Ducks in goals (10), power play goals (three) and is second in points (21) and shots (81). He ranks second among AHL rookies in goals and is fourth in points and shots.

Kunitz finished as the nation's second-leading scorer with 79 points (35 goals, 44 assists) in 42 games at Ferris State University as a senior in 2002-2003 and was named a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given each season to the top collegiate player in the United States.

In recognition of his achievement, Kunitz will receive a plaque from Fifth Third Bank, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game.

I agree...The team has taken a long enough look at Holmqvist...Sending Holmqvist down and taking a look at Kunitz would be a good idea.

If not Kunitz then I wouldn't mind seeing Severson's energy in our lineup instead. Corey Pecker has worked hard for a year and a half down there, he might deserve a look as well. Perrault and Paranteau definetly need more time at Cincy. Martensson already had a look at the NHL this year.

Because he has already played in the AHL and thus began the first year of his contract, it wouldn't make sense for him to play in Junior. Also players being sent to junior from the minors are rare and I think his old team has their full count of 20 year olds.
Parenteau will be back playing in a few days. I could be wrong on him being a scratch, he could possibly be injured, hard to say.

Ducks send Rampage for a Lupul

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Joffrey Lupul had three goals and an assist and Chris Kunitz tied a franchise record with five points on a goal and four assists to lead the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks to a 5-2 victory over the San Antonio Rampage at Cincinnati Gardens.

After Michel Periard scored for the Rampage to even the score at 2-2 midway through the third period, Lupul scored three times 4:01 apart for his first professional hat trick.

Lupul, a first-round pick by Anaheim in 2002, also assisted on the game-opening goal by Kunitz 9:15 into the first period. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Edmonton, Alberta native has five points in his last two games after going scoreless in his first AHL game January 2 against Houston after being sent down by Anaheim, where he had six goals and eight assists in 34 games.

Kunitz assisted on a goal by Todd Reirden with one second left in the first period to give the Ducks a 2-1 lead and all three of Lupul's goals in the third. The Ferris State product now ranks second among AHL rookies in scoring with 27 points, including a team-leading 11 goals.

Lupul and Kunitz also each posted franchise-best plus-5 ratings for Cincinnati, which snapped its five-game winless streak (0-3-1-1) and moved into a tie with San Antonio for fifth place in the West Division.

Eddy Ferhi, a first-year pro out of Sacred Heart University, stopped 18 shots in the win for the Ducks and was involved in a fight with San Antonio goaltender Travis Scott early in the second period.

Scott, who leads the AHL in wins with 13, surrendered four goals on 38 shots in the loss for the Rampage, who are 2-6-1-0 in their last nine games.

The Ducks, who have scored nine goals in their last two games after netting just 22 in their previous 11 games, begin a three-game road trip Thursday at Milwaukee.

"When (Lupul) came down, it was kinda like a new spark to playing hockey again," Kunitz said. "It's just fun playing with each other."

"That's a lot of skill, a lot of speed and a lot of hockey smarts all on one line," Shaw said of the Mighty Ducks' top line, which includes play-making specialist Tony Martensson.

Hockey Madness Weekend Review

The following are summaries and my comments from the games I went to this past weekend featuring my hometown Cincinnati Mighty Ducks!

January 2, 2004 game results

Ducks, Aeros settle for tie

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Stephane Veilleux scored a shorthanded goal early in the third period to help the Houston Aeros skate to a 2-2 tie with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks Friday at Cincinnati Gardens.

After goals by Brian Gornick in the first period and Chris Armstrong in the second gave Cincinnati a 2-1 lead, Veilleux netted his fifth goal of the season 5:46 into the third to force overtime.

Jeff Hoggan opened the scoring 3:23 into the first period for Houston, which extended its unbeaten streak to seven games with its fourth consecutive tie (3-0-4-0). The Aeros have lost just once in their last 14 games, going 9-1-4-0 in that stretch.

Kyle Kettles turned away six shots in overtime and recorded 33 total saves for Houston.

Ilya Bryzgalov finished with 31 saves for Cincinnati, which snapped a three-game losing streak but remains winless in its last four. Bryzgalov made his best save with under a minute to play in overtime when he robbed Mika Hannula on a breakaway.

The Ducks play the San Antonio Rampage at 7:35 p.m. Saturday at Cincinnati Gardens.

Mark's Analysis
This was one of the strongest efforts I have seen by this team. The defense was there for most of the game, and every player seemed to be on the same page. However, the power play did make one mistake which cost Ilja the victory. Ilja came out of the crease to play the puck on a power play, and no one from the unit came back to assist, so he had to fire a dangerous long crossice pass which was intercepted. Ilja barely missed saving the shot, but it went in. This was a great effort. It was also the first game for the recently sent down Joffrey Lupul. I was not impressed. He skated around in circles too much, did little with the puck. In overtime, he had an open net from the left faceoff circle and never shot. All he did was make cute circles and figure 8s. Missed Popovic, who played in Anaheim's loss to Buffalo. Effort was there, Lupul was disappointing, and Ilja was disappointed in a stellar 30+ save effort. However, we need all the points we can get.

Rampage rally to tie in third, then dump Ducks in OT

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Vaclav Nedorost scored his second goal of the game in overtime to lift the San Antonio Rampage to a 5-4 win over the CIncinnati Mighty Ducks Saturday at Cincinnati Gardens.

Nedorost, who snapped a 1-1 tie early in the second period, netted his fourth goal of the season 1:59 into the extra session for the Rampage, who snapped a four-game winless streak (0-3-1-0) and won for just the second time in their last nine (2-6-1-0).

Eric Beaudoin had two goals and Denis Shvidki finished with three assists for San Antonio, which improved to 3-1-0-0 against Cincinnati this season.

Simon Lajeunesse turned aside six shots in overtime and 36 overall for his first win of the season.

Todd Reirden, Casey Hankinson and Mike Mottau scored for the Ducks, who squandered a 4-2 third-period lead.

Ilya Bryzgalov gave up all five goals on 25 shots for the loss.

The Ducks and Rampage complete a two-game series at 3:05 p.m. Sunday at Cincinnati Gardens.

Mark's Analysis
This is the first game where I have been disappointed in the goaltending of Ilja Bryzgalov. I do not know whether he is tired or has the flu, but he looked terrible this game. He even let one puck in under his skate on the corner. Lupul continued to skate pretty and hog the puck-DUDE, DO SOMETHING WITH IT, EITHER PASS OR SHOOT, BUT DON'T HOLD IT. This was a game when the Defense needed to pick up the goalie, but no, it didn't happen, and Ilja was out of gas when it came time to do the miraculous this time. Hey, did someone spike Reirden's water with Viagra? The guy is hitting, and he actually had a goal tonight! Maybe he is having flashbacks to 10 years ago. Either way, it is good to see him rejuvenated, even though I do not think it will last.

San Antonio.............................1-0-1=2
Cincinnati.................................2-0-3=5

First period: 1. Cin, Kunitz 11 (Lupul), 9:15. 2. San, Nedorost 5 (Rossiter), 19:04.
3. Cin, Reirden 3 (Kunitz, Armstrong), 19:59.

Second period: No scoring.

Third period: 4. San, Periard 4 (Green, Beaudoin), 10:15 (ppg). 5. Cin, Lupul 1 (Martensson, Kunitz), 14:57. 6. Cin, Lupul 2 (Kunitz, Brookbank), 17:55. 7, Cin, Lupul 3 (Kunitz, Mottau), 18:58 (eng).

Shots on goal: San Antonio 9-3-8=20; Cincinnati 12-18-9=39.

Power play opportunities: San Antonio 1-for-3; Cincinnati 0-for-2. Goaltenders: San Antonio, Scott (59:10; 38 shots, 34 saves, 1 eng; record 13-10-4); Cincinnati, Ferhi (20 shots, 18 saves; record 2-4-2). A: 2,717. Referee: Dwyer. Linesmen: Kneale, Lord. Records: San Antonio 14-13-4-0; Cincinnati 13-16-5-1.

Mark's Analysis
OK, so maybe this Lupul kid can play....I still think he hogs the puck too much, and needs to work on distributing, but the kid seems to be getting into the groove (UNDERSTATEMENT). Reirden scored again....whatever he is taking, he needs to keep it up, bottle it, and sell it to senior citizens for pep.

And, just call him Fightin' Eddy Ferhi. Eddy Ferhi, the backup goaltender, got the start. Early in the second period, there was a scrum in front of the Rampage net, and Goalie Travis Scott cheapshotted one of the Ducks by getting at him from behind. Eddy Ferhi came charging down the ice, and challenged Scott. Scott made a big show of taking forever to get his equipment off, but when he did, they locked up. It was mostly clutching and grabbing, but both goalies got off a few shots, and Eddy held his own. He was greeted postgame by chants of Eddy! Eddy! There was also a massive scrum at the end of the game with Cam Severson, and Sheldon Brookbank getting into some punch throwing with a few Rampage players. A very intense game, and we won!!!! Hopefully, Reirden will either retire or keep playing at this level, and with the return of Mark Popovic today, then our defense is rising in ability. And, this Lupul kid may have game.....Stay tuned.

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Cincinnati Mighty Ducks were assigned right wing Dan Bylsma by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and activated right wing Alexei Smirnov from injured reserve on Thursday.

Bylsma, 33, was scoreless in 11 games with Anaheim this season after returning December 19 from offseason knee surgery. He spent the past three seasons with Anaheim, producing career-high totals with eight goals and 17 points in 2001-2002.

Smirnov, a first-round pick by Anaheim in 2000, missed the last 13 games with a shoulder injury suffered at Utah on December 6. Smirnov has five goals and five assists with 12 penalty minutes in 15 games.

Ducks came back from a 3-2 3rd period deficit to win in overtime. Joel Perrault had 2 goals and Smirnov scored the game winner with one second left in overtime.

Bryz got the win. Bylsma had one shot.

Baby Ducks give up a goal in the 3rd to settle for a 3-3 tie with Milwaukee. Bry made 44 saves. Goal scorers were Nick Smith, Casey Hankinson(SH) and Shane O'Brein(PP).

Bylsma was -2 as was Martenson. Severson had 2 assists as well.

I think I covered all the bases

They beat the Rampage tonight 3-2. Hankinson and Aucoin each had 1+1 and combined for 11 shots. Recent ECHL callup Josh Gratton had an assist. Smirnov had 4 shots.

Bryz got the win with 17 saves.

Well he was leading the ECHL in penalty minutes before his callup to the AHL. I think he's ready to battle all the AHL tough guys, and if he can skate better than Burnett then call him up to the NHL for a look...everyone else from Cincy is going to get a look sooner or later.

Cincy Ducks lost to Hamilton last night 3-2
Parenteau and Pohanka with the goals
Bryz stopped 40 shots

Cincy Ducks lost to Cleveland tonight 3-2
Hankinson and Parenteau with the goals (and both had an assist as well)
Ferhi stopped 27 shots

Parenteau is the real story here, 3 goals in his last 3 games and a 4 game point streak with 5 points (3 goals and 2 assists). Hopefully he's turning it on.
Meanwhile, Hankinson has a seven game point streak going on.

Also, what's up with the shot totals....Cincy needs some D....but then again, the whole prospect organization needs some D

Gonchar leads all d-men in points in this league, but is -22. Would that prevent you from acquiring him(w/o the injury)? I say call him up, give him the chance. In his only preseason game with the big club, he scored a goal, so maybe he'll bring some life to the point.

Now is not the time to experiment. This is the time when we either make a run towards the playoffs or we start dealing for the future. If it comes to that point where we are out of things then there is time for Armstrong to show what he can do.

Just curious are you guys that are saying Armstrong will be called up in Cincy? Because I see most Cincy games and yes Armstrong has good offensive #'s , there is no doubt. But, Mark Popovic is by far their best defesmen. When he was gone there was to Spengler and Anaheim there was a huge hole in defense. I am just curious are you guys looking at Armstrong stats and haven't seen him play? If the ducks give up on their season Popovic would be called up before Armstrong, Armstong is 28 and a career minor league guy(not taking anything away from the season he is having, but it is a fact) and Popovic is 21 and the Ducks future.
I don't think at this point it is about replacing Ozo, b/c no one in Cincy can do that, that could only be done via trade. So if the Ducks give up I would think Popovic would be called up so he could get his NHL experience and get his rookie mistakes out. Also, to get him up to speed on the NHL level, so he can make adjustments to his game. I am pretty sure the Ducks have him penciled in as there 5 or 6 D-man for next year and Armstrong is in a one year contract and could easliy be gone next year. I am just curious if these people who are posting that Armstrong will be called up over Popovic have seen them play one game or are you baseing your opinions on stats?
No Popovic's offensive numbers aren't high but defense wise he is pretty strong. I think fans in Anahiem look at Cincy's stats and base opinions on that, which you can do for a forward at times, but most of the small things good defesemen do don't end up on the stats sheet. I don't know maybe some of you guys are in Cincy, but I am assuming the majority aren't.
I see these guys play a lot and Popovic is a far better defeseman and a great puck mover and at 21 has much more of an upside then Armstrong. True Armstrong might see a few NHL games, but I think Popovic would end up with the Ducks for the rest of the season before Armstrong would.

None of us see them play, so stats are all we have. Popovic was heralded as a two-way defenseman and clearly isn't. If he can play, good.

If you see them play, we're delighted to have you post about them. Don't get all high and mighty about it, just enlighten us. We're pretty reasonable.

Stats is about all we have to go on. Based on Popovic's stats a lot of us have assumed he is having a rough second year.

I'm sure all of us on here would appreciate any further insight you want to offer us on Cincy's players. There really isn't much information out there on AHL players, so stats is often all we have to go by.

I wasn't being all high and mighty sorry if that came out wrong. That is why I asked if you guys have seen him play. Yes he has been touted as a 2 way performer and I think he will be. The knock on him last year was his offensive #'s were good but his d-lacked a little. So now he has worked real hard on D and improving his defensive game and he is a very solid D man, who has a great future. He is 21 and will only get better. I guess it is frustrating hear people make judgements about guys they never see play. Agian with forwards stats don't lie but with a defeseman it is hard to judge them unless you see them play.
I do think Armstrong will get a call up and get his chance b/c he has earned it. But, Popovic has earned it too. He works his butt off and as a 21 year old has more maturity then most guys on the team, he also is natural leader even at his young age the older guys even follow by his example. Agian I am not bashing Armstrong I think he has had a great year. But, I think in the future the Ducks have a great defenseman in Popovic. I really like Shane O'Brien I think he was a surprise out of camp, I think they intended to send him back to St. Mike's, but he impressed them enough to get a contract. It seems it took him awhile to adjust to the AHL, but he has potential. He makes his share of mistakes, but he is still young. They pair him w/ Popovic a lot that I have seen. I think they see Popovic as someone he can learn from, they are pretty much the same age, Popovic just seems older. But, hopefully O'Brien can turn out to be something b/c after Popovic there really isn't much in the pipeline for D-men. I heard someone say something about Rogers at Michigan, but I haven't seem him play so I have no idea how good he is.
Parenteau has picked it up of late and is playing well. I think he might need another year in the AHL, but if he has a impressive camp you could see him in Anaheim next year(if there is a season).
Smirnov, I am a little biased about. I think he has a lot of natural talent but I just don't think he tries enough. I feel like he could be playing so much better. He just frustrates me but again that is my bias. I just feel he needs to try more.

Aucoin is also fun to watch, he will never be a top line player, but he is gritty little player. Kind of reminds me of McDonald a little. He will probaly always be a 3rd or 4th line guy if he makes the NHL but he has a lot of heart.

Your not alone in the Smirnov boat...he has a ton of talent but I question the drive. IMO he's atleast a 5 year project he was paired with Fedorov alot in camp and did nothing. If he learns to use the body more, add about 15 pounds he could be an all star caliber player. He's got the talent hopefully someone tells him he needs some heart as well.

Thanks for the information.
If you like physical D-men like O'Brien, you will like seeing Nathan Saunders next year. 6'4 210 mean defensemen with 208 PIMS in 49 QMJHL league games so far this year. Cincy will have a very physical Defense with him and O'Brien along with Brookbank. In your opinion how good are O'Brien and Brookbank in term of Checking/intimidation/fighting?

Cory Pecker had a 20 goal AHL rookie season last year, and this year he only has 5 goals. Has he simply not been getting a lot of ice time? What do you think of his potential?

Do you know if Martensson or Mottau are injured? Haven't seen them in the lineup for about 5 games.

Yeah, I forgot about him. I won't be comfortable with Ward on the blueline untill Ozo returns. Hopefully we'll se Armstrong back, or Popovic or Motteu(after injury).

I'm hoping for a deal to grab a #1-3 defenseman, though.

Hey Forbsey, whats your opinion of Corey Pecker?he had a breakout year last year and has cooled off this season...what is his NHL future?

Kevin Forbes
02-08-2004, 11:35 AM
I gotta say that Pecker won't make it on the top two lines in the league, that's for sure. If he ever makes the NHL, it will be in a 3rd line pest kinda role, which is how he is being used in Cincy this year (that's why his scoring is down). He's a little on the small side and probably needs to get stronger and more defensively sound if he'll ever make the jump.
Personally, I'm hoping he does see time in the NHL, but there's work to be done before he'll be able to.

Glad they are finally letting Mark play offensively again. When they added Armstrong and Mottau 2 offensive D-man they really asked him to take a backseat and improve his D, which he has. But, it is nice to see when they ask him to trun on the offense 7 shots on net in one game and 2 points is nice. I was getting nervous that they had stunted his offensive skills a little too much, but hopefully he can put both the offense and D together and become what we all are expecting. But, it was nice to see those stats hopefully he can keep it up.

Foresby I stop in once in awhile to read the posts. I live in Cincy and get to some games. I will try to post more often.
But, yes the Ducks had a brutal 3 days and today's game was a 3:00pm game os there wasn't much rest for the weary from SAturday's game. I didn't see the game, but it appears by looking at shot total they were outplayed. I am sure they were sluggish. But, Admirals last goal was shorthanded so i am assuming the goalie kept them in the game. I forgot to lokk and see if it was Bryz or Fehri. But, yes they have a very brutal schedule.

Toughness yeah, more so than last season. He shows it in his hitting. And he takes the hits, then gets right back into the game like nothing happened. I'm impressed with him this year as he doesn't just hit against the boards.

Brian may not be scoring at the moment, but he sure makes presence on the ice with the good attitude and work ethics he has!

They definitely looked sluggish - 3 games in 3 days will do that to ya, tho. They generated some pretty good chances, but Finley looked good - not great, but solid. Ferhi was OK. Chistov had the only goal on a sweet move - but it was about the only thing he did all afternoon. Popovic was solid - he's going to be a good one. O'Brien made a couple of major errors - he misplayed the puck in the offensive zone and gave Gamache a breakaway for Milw.'s first goal.

How'd Smirnov do on D?

Kevin Forbes
02-20-2004, 09:54 PM
Steve Valiquette made 32 saves as the Toronto Roadrunner put away Cincy 2-0.

First off the Lines for Cincy

Bylsma - Martensson - Chistov
Hankinson - Aucoin - Parenteau
Stepp - Smith - Pecker
Smirnov - Pohanka - Gratton

Popovic - O'Brien
Alen - Brookbank
Mottau

Bryzgalov in net (shutout the Roadrunners in the last two meetings)

This was the first time we saw Smirnov on D, as the Ducks used a short bench and only dressed 5 true D-men. The 4th line never really saw action as a full unit. Gratton played a bit on the 3rd and Pohanka filled in for Byslma a bit on the top line. The D pairings were basically mix and match, although Alen-Brookbank were stuck together as a unit.

Before the game they interviewed Bylsma, he said that his knee was still bothering him a bit and he is still trying to rehab it. He also said that Game 7 last year was the biggest highlight and the biggest disappointment of his career.

1st period
I noticed Popovic had an awful giveaway, also noticed Alen really playing the body. Smith took a puck to the face, but seemed ok. Parenteau was really flying out there with speed and skill.
Shane O'Brien fights Dan Baum
O'Brien wins it easily, lots of monster punches
Right off the next faceooff
Josh Gratton fights Rocky Thompson
Plenty of punches thrown, really exciting, I'd call it a draw. To quote the play-by-play guy "Gratton got that one right on the schnozz".

2nd period
Sheldon Brookbank fights Doug Lynch
Brookbank pushes Lynch into the boards during the fight, lots of punches thrown, fight ends when Brookbank's jersey is pulled over his head.
On a penalty kill, the Ducks go on the attack, with Alen jumping up in the play, he turns it over and while the Ducks try to recover, Toronto scores a powerplay goal, no real chance for Bryz, it was a 3 on 2.
Parenteau takes a vicious slash on his hand near the end of the period, but no call.

3rd period
Popovic was blocking a lot of shots
There was a long period with Chistov-Martensson-Byslma, Smirnov-Popovic out there, lots of chances, nothing results
Near the end of the period, Mottau seems to be still favoring his previously injured knee.
Empty Net goal, off the faceoff in Toronto's zone, Martensson and Chistov were playing the point and both were caught flat footed as the Toronto player just zooms up the ice.

The Ducks really dominated the game, lots of shots, played a strong forechecking game. They seemed to have trouble with communication at times, clumping up and not being in position well.
I was really impressed with Parenteau, showed a lot of effort and attitude, flying all over the placed, generating a lot of chances. He also played well defensively, which bodes well for his future.
Alen was alright, I was interested to see how he plays. He tried to jump up in the play a few times, one of them leading to the powerplay goal. He did play a strong physical game though.
I never realised how big Bryzgalov was, he covers a lot of net. But he doesn't play the puck too well...Unfortunately, he does go out to try to play it a lot.
Popovic jumps effortlessly up in the play. He looks good.

Now for the two big stories of the game Chistov and Smirnov
They seemed to play really well together, had a few no look passes and the like.
Smirnov played very well on Defense, he jumped into the play a few times, but also played well defensively. He was excellent at moving the puck out of the zone.
Chistov was easily the most talented player on the ice. Everything he did was just effortless. The announcers mentioned that the reason he was sent down was because of lack of diligence defensively. He did look a little half-focused at times, avoiding contact and not playing in traffic, but he just was so much better then the rest. I think if he would of really stepped it up, he could of single-handedly won the game. The announcers said he was a bit of a puck hog, but he seemed to be moving the puck well, passing and shooting a lot. He stickhandled through the D, many times. Everytime it looked like he was really turning it on Valiquette was amazing. There was one save where Chistov deked out everyone, even Valiquette and the goalie was down and out, but still managed to get the glove on the puck. Chistov was the best player out there after Valiquette.

For those that are watching the Cincy game...any comments on the O'Brien/Gratton/Brookbank fights?

They were all pretty good fights, better than most I have seen burnett and simpson go in. I would say O'Brien was the clear winner in his, I didn't really pay to much attension to them though but some punches were landed in all three. The first two periods were pretty boring, not much scoring chances and only a few good hits. The third was much more entertaining even though we lost 2-0. Chistov started to dominate the 3rd but looked unmotivated much of the game, if he had a better shot he would have had a goal or two. Smirnov looked great on D in his first game. He made some solid outlet passes, jumped in the play 2 or 3 times and used good judgement when doing so. He used his size very effectively rubbing players out and even through the best hit of the game, an open ice hit around the face off dot, he played pretty physical. Most players were real quiet the first two periods like I said they were kinda boring, but in the third parenteau and pecker played pretty well, gratton had a chance wide open infront from a nice pass from brookbank. Popovic was solid, I think he just needs to fine tune his game and then could be ready for the NHL. Like most defencemen he just needs time to develop. This was the first time I had seen Bryz play and he takes up alot of the net. He wasn't tested much but was solid. The only goal he let in he was screened by 3 or 4 players so he couldn't do much.

Yea I was a little disappointed about Chistovs play but at the start it seemed like he would try to make a rush but noone knew what he was doing, like forbsey said his skill was above everyone else. I think he is just hoping for this season to end. He did have some dominating sequences in the third though. One other note, Florida GM rick dudley was their, they interviewed him in the first intermission and asked why he was their and he said something like just checking up on players and coaches or something, it was pretty confusing, but im sure it meant nothing.

I missed most of it, but there were a few things I noticed from what I saw-

Popovic really looks like he's grown defensively

Smirnov isn't a bad d-man

Aucoin is awesome down there. He deserves a call-up over Hankinson, and I think he'd do better than Kunitz

Chistov really looks like he's in a slump

Pohanka looks like he's really turned it around since his ECHL demotion. He isn't playing like a superstar, but he's playing well

Pecker looks pretty dangerous during some moments

The problem I noticed with Smirnov is that he isn't a natural goal scorer or at the very least, not a goal scorer at the NHL level. Moving him to the defense is a good move IMO. The kid got a big body but now, can he skate backward? We'll find out.

Juha Alen was scratched after his defensive miscues in Toronto (my guess)
Andy Rierson was playing instead.
Cincy killed off a plethora of penalties (One of Martensson's goals was shorthanded in fact)
Chistov had just 1 shot after 4 in each of the previous 2 games
Parenteau, O'Brien and Rierson all had assists.

I'm still scratching my head at the Smirnov on the blueline. I thought Rierson was injured and with Armstrong in Anaheim, it was due to necessity. But now it just looks like they're doing it to mess with him or something. Makes very little sense.

The Cincinnati Mighty Ducks were assigned defenseman Chris Armstrong by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim on Tuesday.

Armstrong, 28, appeared in four games with Anaheim this season, recording one assist. He has six goals and 24 assists in 46 games with Cincinnati.

A native of Regina, Saskatchewan, Armstrong was drafted by the Florida Panthers in the third round (57th overall) of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-foot, 198-pounder was signed by Anaheim as a free agent June 26, 2003.

In another roster move made Tuesday, Cincinnati recalled left wing Brian Gornick from ECHL San Diego.

Gornick, 23, had two goals and two assists in five games with San Diego this season. The 6-foot-5, 210-pounder has one goal and one assist in 22 games with Cincinnati.

Interesting note, only 2 penalties in the whole game, 1 for each team, both in the first period. Actually, the Cincy penalty occured during the powerplay for the Chicago penalty, so there was only about a minute each of "true" powerplay time in the whole game.

I'd put the blame on a quick hook by coach Brad Shaw. After Ilya Bryzgalov let in 2 goals on 15 shots in the first period, Trevor Koening (who was called up from San Diego when Ferhi went down) started the second and finished the game allowing 5 goals in 22 shots.
Ducks goals by Popovic and Gratton
Helpers go to Smith, Aucoin and Armstrong
Popovic lead the team with 4 shots
Chistov and Smirnov both had 2 shots
Pecker, Aucoin and Mottau ended the night -4

Well, I cant say it was a quick hook. He gave up 3 goals in the 3rd period the night before. I was at the game, and I thought the last 2 in the period were kinda soft. So if he let in 2 soft ones today, that would explain it. But with respect to Brygzgalov, the defensive play in front of him is pathetic.

Sorry that I dont post on this thread more. I go to a lot of Ducks home games. I have to say that last night I really watched Smirnov. To me he was very impressive playing D last night. Didnt really seem to struggle at all. Had very good vision, had two passes that led to breakaways(neither scored). The only thing I noticed that was negative was that he did get caught pinching a few times. But that his to be expected with his offensive ability. But him getting caught never seemed to hurt them, it was usually at the end of a shift. Only other play of note was Armstrong creamed Blatny b/c he had his head down. Reminded me of Stevens on Lindros, but not as violent. Same kinda play on a breakaway. Chistov seems to continue to struggle. He gets pushed off the puck way too easy. It also seemed to me last night that when he made some good stick handling moves, he didnt want to shoot. He was looking for other options. He really needs to gain some confidence and shoot.

I hope Smirnov keeps it up. That would be great if he could be a good offensive-defensemen at the NHL level.

Smirnov didn't keep it up today, he was a healthy scratch along with Cory Pecker, Brian Gornick and Andy Rierson as the Cincinnati beat Cleveland 4-1. Cincinnati scored more then 3 times for the first time since January 16th.
Patzold was pulled after the first period for Cleveland after letting in 3 goals on 12 shots. Schaefer replaced him and was astounding, stopping 13 of the 14 he faced.
I listened to this on cybercast radio.

The lines looked to be:
Bylsma - Smith - Chistov
Kunitz - Martensson - Pohanka/ Gratton
Parenteau - Aucoin - Hankinson
Gratton - Pohanka - Stepp

D Pairings were:
Popovic - Armstrong
Alen - Brookbank
Mottau - O'Brien

A night after being pulled himself, Bryzgalov got the win, stopping 28 shots, sounded like he was extremely sharp and he was named first star of the game
Hankinson had a goal and an assist (5 shots! most on the team) and was named the 2nd star
Pohanka had a goal and an assist Good enough for 3rd star
Also of note was Chistov with a powerplay goal and an assist. Popovic had his 2nd goal in as many games and an assist. Armstrong and Mottau both had 2 assists.

Popovic, Mottau and Alen were all hitting hard, Alen even got in a fight (which he won handily).

The Ducks only dressed 17 players tonight, Smirnov, Pecker, Gornick and Rierson were healthy scratches and Perreault didn't play but no reason was given. They left Milwaukee at midnight last night and did not arrive in Cleveland until 8:30 this morning by bus, so they were supposedly tired.

The lone goal for Cleveland was shorthanded and on the same powerplay, Chistov scored to preserve a 2 goal lead. Cincy killed off 4 penalties, with Pohanka and Bylsma doing most of the penalty killing.

Listening to it, I was most impressed by what I heard about Alen and Pohanka

something that interested me was the announcers way of saying Parenteau and Bryzgalov

I always thought it was "Parent - Toe" and "Breeze-Ga-lov" but he said it like "Per-Rent-Toe" and "Briz-Gal-Ov"

It was weird

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Cincinnati Mighty Ducks right wing Cory Pecker has been loaned to the Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League for the balance of the 2003-2004 season.

Pecker, 22, had six goals and 10 assists with 32 penalty minutes in 54 games this season. He had 33 points in 77 games with Cincinnati last season, including a team-leading 20 goals.

Pecker's rights remain property of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Cincinnati Mighty Ducks announced their 22-man Clear Day roster on Friday.

Only those players listed on the Clear Day roster are eligible to compete in the remaining four weeks of the AHL regular season and in the Calder Cup playoffs, unless emergency conditions arise as a result of recall, injury or suspension. The Ducks may also add signed junior players or players on amateur tryout contracts, only after their respective junior or college seasons are complete.

The Ducks' 22-man Clear Day roster consists of two goaltenders, six defensemen and 14 forwards.

Following is Cincinnati's Clear Day roster:

Goaltenders: Ilya Bryzalov, Eddy Ferhi.

Defensemen: Juha Alen, Chris Armstrong, Sheldon Brookbank, Mike Mottau, Shane O'Brien, Mark Popovic.

Forwards: Keith Aucoin, Dan Bylsma, Stanislav Chistov, Josh Gratton, Casey Hankinson, Michael Holmqvist, Chris Kunitz, Tony Martensson, Pierre Parenteau, Joel Perrault, Igor Pohanka, Alexei Smirnov, Nick Smith, Joel Stepp.

Does this mean we are unlikely to see any more of Chistov, Kunitz, Martensson, Holmqvist or Smirnov in the NHL this year?

Spankatola Jamnuts

No, they just needed to be there for this clear day, whatever that is.

I only know this because the paper has said repeatedly that Holmqvist will be back up this weekend and was only sent down to be eligible for the AHL playoff roster.

Pop isn't exactly a fighter, but he can hold his own if necessary. Not sure how he did tonight. I would love to see the video of the game to see what lead up to this. And I would love to see the huge free for all that went on at 19:49. Bylsma and Popvic are the last 2 guys I would expect to get game misconducts and 5 for fighting, so it must have been out of control.

And according to this we are 5th and almost locked up a playoff spot...

SAN ANTONIO, TX -- Joel Perrault scored the winning goal midway through the third period, as the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks rallied to defeat the San Antonio Rampage, 3-2, Tuesday at the SBC Center.

Perrault broke a 2-2 tie 10:21 into the final period, beating San Antonio goaltender Travis Scott with a shot from between the circles for his 13th goal of the season and third game-winner.

Chris Armstrong and Tony Martensson each had a goal an assist for the Ducks, who overcame a 2-0 second period deficit to improve to 3-1-2-0 in their last six games and move four points ahead of Utah for the fifth and final playoff spot in the West Division with a game in hand.
Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 25 shots to help the Ducks win for the first time in six visits to San Antonio (1-4-1-0).

So maybe we do have something to do when the NHL playoffs are on
