jr77812 11-01-2005, 11:55 PM Despite his own thread I thought this was worthy of a new one:

Congrats...nice to see Portland making a big splash right off the bat.
BTW Marsters was one of several beaten out by Marc-Andre Fleury for goalie of the month:

Cynic!
Kick Save 11-02-2005, 03:30 PM Besides, if McDonald---the poster, not the player---is correct---and I have no reason to doubt that he is---Shannon does not have a contract with the Ducks.***
***To be candid, I find Shannon's contract status confusing. According the Portland Pirates website, Shannon was signed by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks on April 3, 2005. (I'm doing this from memory, so I apologize if I'm a day or two off on the date.) As McDonald pointed out in the other thread, since this was during the lockout, an NHL team couldn't sign him. If it was, in fact, the Cincinnatti Mighty Ducks who signed him, then how do the Portland Pirates have him under contract?
Anaheim ditched its affiliation with Cincinnatti and switched it to Portland. But they didn't move the franchise; they merely switched their affiliation. Thus, Anaheim had the right to transfer to Portland any players who were under contract to Anaheim and were playing at Cincinnatti (or elsewhere) last year. But, if Cincinnatti had Shannon's contractual rights, how did Anaheim have the right to transfer him to Cincinnatti?
Kevin Forbes 11-02-2005, 03:37 PM He signed a PTO with Cincinnati (check out press releases) the try out finished when Cincy playoffs began
I'm guessing that as the Cincinatti Ducks arnt a team anymore (ask far as they're not playing) their players were most likely released from contracts. May be he just signed a one year deal though.
Kevin Forbes 11-02-2005, 03:45 PM it was a tryout deal and he was released when the playoffs began (he wasn't on the clear day roster and Cincy chose Ryan Getzlaf as the injury replacement for Perrault as opposed to Shannon).
Any deal he has with Portland has nothing to do with the prior deal with Cincinnati. It's the same as when Brian Lee played a few games with Cincy a few years back.

Naru:
Cincinnati had its contract developmental-wise expire at the conclusion of their Conference Semi-final vs. the eventual Calder Cup runner-up or Western Conference Champion Chicago Wolves after what was previously thought to have been a long-term contract w/ Anaheim that was extended through 2004-05, the Anaheim franchise also was undergoing personnel changes while waiting for the current ownership to be approved by the NHL.
As that was being transpired, the Ducks then informed Pete Robinson that the transfer to Portland, would indeed happen, as the Colorado Avalanche terminated their 9 YEAR agreement in Hershey, PA, freeing the Pirates in effect to not exercise an option which was held by the previous franchisee, the Washington Capitals, to allow the Capitals to move there for at least 2 seasons, and the Ducks to begin their affiliation this season in Portland. (Colorado EVENTUALLY landed in Lowell, replacing Calgary, who reactivated their dormant franchise in Omaha, NE).
As for Cincinnati, and later Edmonton ALSO REACHED this conclusion, due to AHL By-laws, the Cincinnati franchise needed to have in place an NHL franchise, to operate, but none were available by that point, so Pete Robinson had to do the only thing he could do, voluntarily suspend his franchise, to be able to regroup for 2006-07, and as has been posted the team has a new nickname called RailRaiders, that is the primary reason Cincinnati has not been an active member this 70th anniversary season, they are intending to find that piece later this season and their goal is to be back as an active member in 2006-07.
McDonald19 11-02-2005, 07:03 PM Portland, Maine - This Thursday fans can join Pirates forward Ryan Shannon in the AHL chat room. The Pirates leading scorer will be in the chat room from 2:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Shannon currently boasts an 8-game point streak as the Pirates get ready to face the Lowell Lock Monsters on Friday in Lowell at 7:35 p.m. To catch up with Ryan Shannon go to www.theahl.com and click on the link to the AHL chat room.
Someone should go in there and ask him if he ever signed a contract with Anaheim or if he is only on a one year deal with the Portland Pirates.
edit: ok I sent a question in early asking him if he is on contract with Anaheim and if there has been any discussion regarding him signing a entry contract with Anaheim.

Eastern
Kevin Forbes 11-03-2005, 01:13 PM Alright, I'm going to take this as a sign from the organization:
Ducks Prospect Report from MD.com
http://www.mightyducks.com/mdclient/DucksProspectReport103105.pdf
Lists almost anyone, names like Prestberg, Stussi and Johwelin.
Ryan Shannon IS NOT listed.
Dare I say, case closed?
Pepper 11-03-2005, 02:11 PM Another good prospect for Ducks, we're really deep nowadays!
Kevin Forbes 11-03-2005, 02:25 PM Another good prospect for Ducks, we're really deep nowadays!
he's not a prospect with the Ducks...
he's simply an AHL level player, no contract with Anaheim
Kevin Forbes 11-03-2005, 03:31 PM good thing we didn't wait for the chat to answer the contract question:

jr77812 11-03-2005, 03:35 PM It will be interesting to see if the Ducks offer him some type of bottom scale two-way deal? Obviously he needs to prove that he can maintain his level of performance before anyone gets too excited.
While he's proving solid worth in Portland I don't envision another Martin St Louis on our hands. There have been plenty of scouts watching Portland so if he had unknown "sleeper" talent I think maybe someone else would've tried to scoop him up. Then again you never know when you'll come across a player with the pure desire to overcome the "size" factor.

Are you sure? I think you're just kidding! I think he's our prospect, what does Ducks official site say?

Although it wasn't the same situation, there were plenty of scouts who didn't recognize St. Louis' talent. The fact that no one else has scooped him up doesn't mean a lot to me.
jr77812 11-03-2005, 09:35 PM My point is that it is too soon to know where he is going. I like what I've seen from him...he has a lot of talent and has a great knack for the puck around the net. I just don't know enough about him beyond a couple home games to say anything more definitive then that.
For purely selfish reasons I hope he stays in Portland. ;)

If the injuries continue to mount out there, some pressure will have to be put on BB, to sign Shannon if he stays healthy and continues this start.
stungun 11-06-2005, 02:22 AM watched this kid at tonights game and he has got speed and skill and doesnt seemed to worried about getting hit. i can see how anahiem wouldnt worry about his size to much after seeing the success of smaller players like kariya, samsanov, and st louis. he has skill for sure. also liked hynes and peters, both not afraid to hit and played smart hockey....
