First place in the Atlantic Division is at stake as the New Jersey Devils (2-1-0) travel across the Hudson River to take on the New York Rangers (1-1-2) to complete a quasi home-and-home series. The Devils last played at home on Saturday as they hosted the New York Rangers at the Meadowlands. The teams headed into overtime tied at 2-2. Brian Rafalski scored the difference maker at the 3:17 mark from Viktor Kozlov and Paul Martin, who is doubtful for the game tonight against the Rangers. In net for the Rangers in that game was rookie Henrik Lundqvist. It was his first NHL game.
The Rangers played a Columbus Day matinee against the Washington Capitals, falling 3-2 in regulation. It was the Rangers first loss in regulation of the season. The Rangers had Kevin Weekes in goal, but he injured himself in practice and is doubtful for tonight. Al Montoya has been recalled from the minors to serve as Lundqvist's backup.
New Jersey’s overtime victory against the Rangers improved the Devils all-time regular season record against the Rangers to 60-53-21.

NJDevils#4 10-13-2005, 11:43 AM Prediction for tonight...
4-1 Devils.
NJ Goals from Brylin, 2 for Mogilny, 1 for Rafalski.
NY Goal from Jagr I guess...who else do they have?
Drewr15 10-13-2005, 11:51 AM I just hope they come out and play 3 periods of hockey. I don't think they can get away with that lackluster of an effort on the road.
rat_riot97 10-13-2005, 12:00 PM Agreed. If the Devils play as poorly in the first two periods in tonights game as they did the previous contest, they don't deserve to win.
What we need to see is more fluidity in the play of our first line. I was at the last game, and to say that I was disapointed in the lack of chemistry in our first line would be an understatement.
As mentioned on another thread, Gomez seems to only step it up around December. Maybe someone should put a mini christmas tree in his locker. Whatever it takes, Gomez has to start showing us the same kind of play he showed in 2000 or last year with the EGG line.
But hey, it's been 3 games .

Err.. I'm sure you're being sarcastic but actually Tom Renney wants Fedor to contribute more offensively. Basically, Tyutin has a lot of potential and offensenvie & defensive talent, but is playing a 1way game since the 1st game. He doesn't want to make any mistakes and get caught off guard and then the other team (say the Devils) score. Besides that Tyutin is probably our #1 or #2 defensmen, I think that's also another reason him and Kasparitis are paired. Kasparitis, IMO, is not as D-solid as Tyutin.. he goes out on the O a lot more and even goes deep sometimes. Even making some bad mistakes sometimes and needs 'Toots' to cover for him.
**Hopefully we see a good game by both teams tonight.. It's raining like a m*********** and we deserve a good night of hockey! :yo:
David Puddy 10-13-2005, 12:37 PM I suppose that Sean Brown will get in his first regular season game this year with the back injury to Paul Martin. Brown looked pretty good at times in the preseason. I hope he uses this chance to come out and give a solid effort.
Here are the special teams of the Devils and Rangers:
Power Play
Rangers 6 of 26 (23.1%) Ranked 5th
Devils 5 of 22 (22.7%) Ranked 6th
Penalty Kill
Devils 22 of 24 (91.7%) Ranked tied-6th
Rangers 27 of 31 (87.1%) Ranked 11th

Devils Rangers is gonna be online too.
Brooklyndevil 10-13-2005, 01:23 PM Just hope they come out motivated with discipline. And if Marty keeps getting run at, I'll have to send him and old video of Billy Smith that I still have.
devsfan8 10-13-2005, 01:41 PM The Devils have had 4 days to practice and sharpen up their discipline issues. I expect a big game from the Checking Line. Rafalski and Gomez are dominant against the Rangers and in particular at MSG.
I think the Devils will play a sharp game and I expect Larry Robinson to mix up the lines a little bit. Maybe not initially but throughout the game. It is a shame Martin is doubtful.
JimEIV 10-13-2005, 02:39 PM Speaking of which, a few weeks ago, I turned on the TV at midnight.......and I was flipping channels, and I happened to stumble upon Ken Daneyko and Scott Stevens as guests on Emeril.

DevilFisch 10-13-2005, 03:17 PM Just hope they come out motivated with discipline. And if Marty keeps getting run at, I'll have to send him and old video of Billy Smith that I still have.
Definitely. But I also hope for the BLOWOUT. Didn't happen last game, so I still want something like a 10-0 beatdown on Weekes/Lundqvist. I want the Rangers blueline to sweat the minute the name "Brian Gionta" comes up.
But realistically, I'll predict a 3-1 Devils win. Goals by Mogilny, Langenbrunner, Jagr, and Malakhov (empty net). I will also predict Richard Matvichuk to do something of substance; but I won't hold my breath.
David Puddy 10-13-2005, 07:04 PM Marty Brodeur is making his 56th consecutive start against the Rangers tonight. It is the longest streak against the same team since Glenn Hall from 1956-63, also against the Rangers.
David Puddy 10-13-2005, 07:17 PM The Rangers are controlling play early. They are out hustling the Devils to loose pucks and creating more offense.
GentlemanOfLeisure 10-13-2005, 07:18 PM where is Paul Martin?
David Puddy 10-13-2005, 07:20 PM where is Paul Martin?Bad back. Sean Brown is playing for him.
Main Devil 10-13-2005, 07:24 PM Devil's PP sucks 5 of 23.
swflyers8* 10-13-2005, 07:24 PM Good game, watching it on the Comcast internet thingy. :yo:
Rucinsky just scored.
Rags just scored again!
2-0
David Puddy 10-13-2005, 07:27 PM Devil's PP sucks 5 of 23.That doesn't suck. They entered the game 6th in the NHL.
But Brodeur has yielded two goals that he shouldn't have. Let's see if the team can come to life and pick him up.
JDevils3 10-13-2005, 07:28 PM I like Richard Matvichuck... he's having a good year.
Devilsfanatic 10-13-2005, 07:29 PM Damn what an awful night
Main Devil 10-13-2005, 07:29 PM Trust me, I don't care where they stand within the league. The PP for the Devils sucks.

Flyers are 1 for 19, I know how you feel.

Yeah past couple years.......eww
swflyers8* 10-13-2005, 07:35 PM Score is now 3-0 Rangers, goal by Blair Betts
Main Devil 10-13-2005, 07:35 PM 3-0 Rangers
Should the backup come in? I say yes. Marty hasn't played well in 2 of the 4 games so far this season. Please don't talk about his confidence, it's time. The Devils record 2-1 has been based on luck so far, not better play.
GentlemanOfLeisure 10-13-2005, 07:35 PM Vladimir Malakhov, he plays so effortlessly!
Devilsfanatic 10-13-2005, 07:36 PM What the hell kind of outing is this.......
Jersey Fresh 10-13-2005, 07:36 PM This is when you need SOMEONE on the team to start something physically. Fight someone, do something to try and get the momentum back. The Devils have pretty much no one to really set a physical tone and it shows.
Main Devil 10-13-2005, 07:36 PM Trust me, it's better than it has been junior!
Junior ???????
JDevils3 10-13-2005, 07:36 PM I like Malakhov too... 2 + 24= -8 :)
On pace for -164. :handclap:
swflyers8* 10-13-2005, 07:38 PM Malakhov just got outworked and took a dumb penalty.
The Omen* 10-13-2005, 07:39 PM The Devs will not make the playoff this year. This D is terrible.
Main Devil 10-13-2005, 07:40 PM Offense isn't much better than the defense. What have they been practicing. This is two outing against the Rangers and the Rangers are the better team.
DevilFisch 10-13-2005, 07:43 PM Uggggggggggh, that first period was horrible to watch.
Apparantly, NO ONE learned ANYTHING in the past 4 days or so.
If the Devils continue to play without any fire, I fail to see them scoring one goal; much less coming back to to win the game.
Please, coach Robinson, Brodeur, SOMEONE, light a fire under this squad.
Brooklyndevil 10-13-2005, 07:45 PM THIS IS UGLY! Other then opening night, this group looks like a lottery team right now.
David Puddy 10-13-2005, 07:47 PM The first two goals were Brodeur's fault, but the last goal is a result of the laziness of Gomez and Brylin. They weren't even moving their feet. If Larry Robinson was a good head coach, he'd bench Gomez, although Madden may be injured.
Junior ???????Yeah, like pal or buddy.
In 2003-04 the Devils were 15th, 51 of 312 (16.6%.) Ottawa was ranked first with 80 of 370 (21.6%.) So 21.7% is pretty damn good. I shouldn expect the hockey expert who thinks Scott Stevens is a bad leader to realize that now should I?
TaiMaiShu 10-13-2005, 07:50 PM wow.... eveyone is lost. they don't have any energy and are making way too many mistakes. they might just not make the playoffs this year if something doens't change. hopefully elias will spark the team because they look like absolute *****
DevilFisch 10-13-2005, 07:51 PM wow.... eveyone is lost. they don't have any energy and are making way too many mistakes. we might just not make the playoffs this year if something doens't change. hopefully elias will spark us
I don't want to wait until late November/early December to see New Jersey play as well as they can. The Devils need a spark NOW. As in before the 2nd period begins. These early losses have a way of coming back to haunt a team in March.
Unthinkable 10-13-2005, 07:52 PM The first two goals were Brodeur's fault, but the last goal is a result of the laziness of Gomez and Brylin. They weren't even moving their feet. If Larry Robinson was a good head coach, he'd bench Gomez, although Madden may be injured.
The turnover at center ice by Mogilny was also disappointing on that last Betts goal.
dkball7 10-13-2005, 07:53 PM Lets just trade away the whole team wow we had a bad period :shakehead
Everyone just calm down. I doubt this continues.

dkball7 10-13-2005, 08:05 PM w/o Paulie our defense is having a VERY difficult time moving the puck, its like they're stuck in their own zone.
Unthinkable 10-13-2005, 08:05 PM Best I've seen from the Devils so far was one real slick skating move by Kozlov, but NJ wasn't able to make it payoff with a goal.
sickboy35 10-13-2005, 08:08 PM What the hell kind of outing is this.......
well its early but...this is the kind of team you have played the last eight years! feels good when the shoe is on the other foot! just having some fun guys we have been haunted by the devils for a loonngg time!
DevilFisch 10-13-2005, 08:11 PM The Devils get a power play on Ortmeyer's interference call.
If the Devils want to win this game, they'll try real hard to make something out of this.
But so far, they're not playing like they want to win.
Ugh.
dkball7 10-13-2005, 08:11 PM Why is Brown on our PP?????
Unthinkable 10-13-2005, 08:12 PM Brown and White on the points during the PP. If that doesn't speak volumes about how dysfunctional this team is playing so far, I don't know what does.

This isn't 2003-04. This is a new open offensive NHL. While 5 of 23 does translate to 21.7% I care less they don't look good on the PP. PERIOD.
David Puddy if you have a hard on towards me get over it. You will swallow whatever the Devils deliver. I never said I was a hockey expert but I did say I was a hockey fan first and a Devil's fan second. I don't drink their kool-aid. I never said Stevens was a BAD leader so don't put words in my mouth I said I didn't respect him as a leader and that I didn't want him back. David, get off my back.
I will be an adult and respect your opinions please do the same.

DevilFisch 10-13-2005, 08:49 PM Trivia Answer: Pat Verbeek with 15.
MacLean and Kirk Muller each had 14.
You know, Muller was a captain at one point if I recall correctly. He'd look good in a Devils sweater now.

I am sure David as a hockey fan that you realize that some type of action is necessary to spark a team. it's called waking them up. I know that you know this. So if Marty was terrible for 66% of the goals then the message to him is this isn't allowed and to the team it's your turn to step up the your game and protect your goalie.
David, I know you know this so support the strategy that has worked in the NHL for years.

Sidenote to Main Devil: Ask yourself this question: Who gives the Devils a better chance to win? Scott Clemmenssen or Martin Brodeur?
Oh, and that 2nd goal was off a bouncing puck, Ville got a lucky roll/bounce of the puck off high.
David Puddy 10-13-2005, 08:53 PM Good for Colin White. They wasn't intent to injure in the hits. Someone on the Devils needs to show some emotion.

Unthinkable 10-13-2005, 09:13 PM The only problem is none of them have much finish. They have been forcing the opposition back into their own zone though.
Sad but true. They have chipped in with some good hits and decent hustle that you have to hope eventually rubs off on the rest of the lines.
David Puddy 10-13-2005, 09:15 PM somebody give me David hale's phone number, at least somebody should call him up.It's not entirely the defensemen's fault by a long shot. Brian Gionta and the 4th Line are the only bright spots in this game. Brodeur didn't look that good, but he can't be expected to keep the team in the game early every night.
JDevils3 10-13-2005, 09:15 PM It's funny with Matvichuck. I got killed on this board before the season for suggesting that Lou buy out his contract.
Well, now we get 3 more years of this. He is tough to watch at 33...what's it gonna be like at 36!? :dunno:

I thought we signed him for only two years?

2 more years after this.
Ronnie Bass 10-13-2005, 09:20 PM 2 more years after this.
Isn't it just one more year after this year?
dkball7 10-13-2005, 09:21 PM That first goal Brodeur gave up was really awful. Sucked the life out of the team.
The absence of Paul Martin really showed.
Scotty G has to wake up.
DevilFisch 10-13-2005, 09:22 PM Well, the Devils gave Henrik Lundqvist his first win. I'm kind of surprised the Devils took 21 shots, to be honest.
Outside of Brian Gionta and the fourth line, I'm not pleased with how the Devils did.
Things better change for Saturday, the Devils need to start playing like they did in the past. Focused, in control of the pace of the game, making most of their passes (Aside: Seriously, in tonight's game and the 2 games before hand, the passing was TERRIBLE. Lots of missed pucks, pucks bouncing of sticks and skates, etc.), and playing with energy.
David Puddy 10-13-2005, 09:23 PM Sad but true. They have chipped in with some good hits and decent hustle that you have to hope eventually rubs off on the rest of the lines. They certainly did their job well. It's the Gomez Line that didn't do much at all tonight. The Parise Line generated some scoring chances, and Gionta got the 4-on-4 goal.
The Devils need to practice lifting the back-hander off the ice. Gomez and Madden could have had goals tonight.
The Deivls fall to 0-2-0 on the road this year, and 2-2-0 overall. The Rangers take sole possession of first place.
NYR 2-1-2 6
NJD 2-2-0 4
NYI 2-2-0 4
PIT 0-1-3 3
PHI 1-2-0 2
Main Devil 10-13-2005, 09:23 PM Oh well, just a loss in the loss column. it's only 4 games into the season, but they don't look good. Give credit to the Rangers.
chocodoggerel 10-13-2005, 09:24 PM hi;
semi-new member, here.
I'm a Directv Center Ice customer, and both the Devils and Islanders games were blacked out. In in western central jersey (flemington)
I see some others here were having blackout issues. Usually with Center Ice, the game will show up *somewhere*.
I'm fuming ...though it seems like I didn't miss anything!
ratsgirl 10-13-2005, 09:24 PM Isn't it just one more year after this year?
it was a four-year contract.
edit...so two more years after this season.

I'm pretty sure its 3 more years after this... unless the strike year counted??? :dunno:
Brooklyndevil 10-13-2005, 09:31 PM They seem to play with to no energy, play no type of system on defense or offense and run around looking silly. They should bring Hale up immediately and Larry should start benching players or he's going to make me wish Lou never brought him back.
Pat Burns would not stand for this type of play. Every team loses games, but it's the way we're losing and winning, except for the opener that's tough to stomach.
Large_Farva* 10-13-2005, 09:34 PM The Rangers won the 1st period.. that was the difference in this one.

Agreed. I haven't been able to watch the games (just listened on the radio and read all the comments), but it sounds like this team just isn't putting in the effort. I have no problem with us losing when we work hard, but I can't stand these losses.
And, I know it's early to be saying this, but I'm really missing Pat Burns. He WOULD NOT have allowed this kind of play. We need either a coach who's going to yell at them and bench some players when they don't perform, or a captain to fire the team up. And right now we have neither.

Same crap for me. All I got was the Rangers on MSG, FSNY Isles and FSN2 Devils were blacked out. I also have Centre Ice. How long have you had Direct TV?
Stratford CT.

You might fall under Fox Boston and they have the right to blackout those games, just a guess mind you.
Unthinkable 10-13-2005, 09:46 PM Quick glance at the faceoff stats and I have to wonder if Parise' wrist is still bothering him from preseason. He went 0-8 tonight on draws which isn't like him.
Another troublesome stat is the lack of shots from Jamie Langenbrunner early on. He used to regularly chip in and lead the team with a good 4 or 5 shots a night. Tonight he had 2 I believe.

I've had Center Ice for - oh about 4 years at least. I've never had any Devils games blacked out *except* for the few dreaded Metro games.
I always felt that was in error, too - as I'm outside the NY area. I'm closer to PHilly. Since you are in CT, I think I see a pattern.
Fire Sather 10-13-2005, 09:48 PM You might fall under Fox Boston and they have the right to blackout those games, just a guess mind you.
I've gotten Isles and Devils games for years while I had Cablevison.

chocodoggerel 10-13-2005, 09:53 PM I think Directv is still ****ing up their blackout codes. There was that problem the opening week ... I'm guessing they still don't have it together.

I don't know I havent had a problem at all until tonight.
I've seen 82 Rangers, Isles, Devils games for all the years I had Cablevison.
I switch to D-TV and have all these effin issues.
ftyutin51 10-13-2005, 09:58 PM From Rangers' fan POV:
-Devils were EXTREMELY lazy tonight, where was the motivation? Except Brian Gionta, who IMO, worked harder than any other Devil.
-Brodeur is an amazing goalie who has stoned the Rangers multiple games..he should be embarrassed by his team's lack of effort in tonight's game. Not to mention he didn't play a A+ game either.
-Why couldn't Malakhov shoot like that for the Rangers?

That has to be it. Even if they are suppose to black out the Isles on FSNY, it should still be on Centre Ice.
Jason MacIsaac 10-13-2005, 10:35 PM Still only 4 games in....I will judge our defense by April maybe. Our offense will come when Elias comes back....he is our offense. When he is scoring it takes pressure off our other lines. I think its about time to change the lines up a little bit.
Kozlov - Parise - Mogilny
Oliwa - Gomez - Langenbrunner
Pandolfo - Madden - Gionta
Brylin - Rasmussen - Marshall
Looks goofy but may be the spark the team needs. At the moment one line is actually doing a little bit offensivly. I remember Burns doing the same type of thing with Gomez 2 or 3 years ago to jump start him.

I think we need Gionta on a purely offensive line. He seems to be the only scorer that's doing anything.

I like the looks of the 1st line a lot.
I would prefer a Langenbrunner-Gomez-Gionta second line. Even though JL would be on his off wing, I think the change of scenery could be benefitial to him.

I have Comcast cable and have all sorts of problems with my Center Ice this year.
Then there's the OLN screw ups. Something in Canada causing the airing of a game to be cancelled. And a couple of random screw ups causing games to not be on Center Ice.
I don't think it's Direct TV's fault. The NHL and it's broadcasting partners are just not on top of the ball.

I agree but I really want Langenbrunner with some sort of playmaker. While his speed is down Langenbrunner still has a really nice shot. Maybe playing him on the left wing would work, I know its his offwing but since Elias went down and Friesen has been traded we are weak on the side.
