JimEIV 10-12-2005, 10:01 AM I truely believe one of the keys to success for the devils this season would be the progression of Paul Martin. Granted, its only 3 games, but he has exceeded all expectation in my opinion. So far the kid has shown nothing but poise and stability.
He even looks to have filled out a little bit more from last season.

He even looks to have filled out a little bit more from last season.I agree. It is hard not to get excited about this kid. I didn't think he'd get more than 35 points this season (and it is still VERY early), but he looks like he could get that and more. I'll be completely sold on him once he puts up 25+ minutes of ice time every night. When that happens (and it will), he will have completely arrived.
Devilsfanatic 10-12-2005, 10:12 AM There are all the Martin-Niedermayer comparisions, except, I feel there is one thing that separates the two above all else, and that's the skating. When Martin flies up to create an odd man rush, he looks like he's pushing himself very hard, where as with Nieder it just looked effortless. Otherwise, instinct wise, Martin does alot of things Scotty did.

Niedermayer was at his best when he was moving. He's a driving force. Martin is a stabilizing force - he doesn't do it quite so quickly but he does it in such a way that he just oozes confidence.
Martin is just so calm, so confident, so collected, and so stable. I fully expected him to look this way though, it was the logical progression of last season combined with Laperriere and Robinson's tutoring. However his offensive numbers have been markedly better than I anticipated. I expected 35 points on the season... I think he'll make 45.
Rabid Ranger 10-12-2005, 10:26 AM I've seen every Devil game this year thus far and IMO Martin has looked tremendous. He looks so poised, especially when leading the break-out and on the PP. I especially like the way he always gets his shot on net. He's a lock for the U.S. Olympic team IMO, probably paired with Rafalski.
DevilsFan 10-12-2005, 11:50 AM I agree guys. I have nothing to say but good things about Martin. What spoke volumes to me about his potential was how he played in the World Cup last September. He had so much poise and awareness, offensively and defensively, that at that age to go up against the best players in the world and hold your own, that is something special.
As of 10/12, he is the leading point-getter of the Devils defensemen and I believe the entire TEAM. I fully expect him to progress even more this year and make the Olympic team. He's going to be a beast on the power-play. He is a future All-Star as well, and the new rules will only benefit him. While he has decent skating ability as well as good passing and shooting skills, what makes him (and will make him) great is his overall hockey sense. When I make comparisons to other players, I'd like to think he resembles Niklas Lidstrom, not overly physical but a quiet and talented two-way defenseman.
Hopefully, when we look back 5 years from now, we won't think that Paul Martin was the next Scott Niedermayer, but the first Paul Martin. :)
Drewr15 10-12-2005, 01:04 PM First let me say that I love Classic Devils avatar, Mark Johnson was one of my first heroes from the olympics to his Devil days.
Anyway, like everyone here I am so impressed with Martin. He reads the play so well and is so solid defensively that he has shocked me. In the ranger game he threw a couple of hits, took some pucks away from Ranger forwards very cleanly, and it was his drive to the net that allowed Mogs power play goal to flop in and tie it. The kid is alright! :D

I guess that means Brown is in. He looked pretty good during preseason.
swflyers8* 10-13-2005, 01:51 PM Your team better keep an eye on Ryan Hollweg. I read that he boarded Martin and now he is out with a bad back. He boarded Dennis Seidenberg and he has been out with a concussion. I hope teams are wary of what this scrub is doing.

Had 239 PIM last year. Can you say Oliwa!

If this was Stanley Cup playoff time, not Game 4 of the regular season, Paul Martin would have been in the lineup Thursday night for the Devils.
With the season less than two weeks old, Devils head coach Larry Robinson decided to be cautious. After missing two days of practice with a back injury, Martin sat out Thursday against the Rangers.
"I had a workout today," Martin said after Thursday's morning skate at Codey Arena. "I feel better. I'm going to rest it tonight and then (try) Saturday."

policegopher 10-17-2005, 02:46 PM Whats the word on P-Mart? I know he is listed day to day, but my fantasy hockey team needs him back soon.

He should be back very soon. I read a quote where he said if this was the playoffs he wouldn't be sitting out so the injury is far from serious.
rtafts 10-17-2005, 03:48 PM He's on pace for 101 points, all assists.  :biglaugh:
