Cincinnati "Railraiders" a possibility for CBJ AHL affiliation?

"Columbus Blue Jackets: The best fit for the Ducks. Columbus' agreement with Syracuse ends after this season, and Cincinnati is geographically closer, plus almost all Columbus games are televised here. Also, Blue Jackets GM Doug MacLean attended Ducks AHL playoff games this spring."

http://news.cincypost.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051005/SPT/510050316/1035

"Without an NHL team to affiliate themselves with, the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks took the 2005/06 season off and now are ready to start back up in 2006/07, and it appears that they have a new name ready to go.

The Mighty Ducks haven't officially announced their new name, which they are expected to do later this month, but a recent search of the United States Patent and Trademark Office shows that the owners of the Cincinnati Gardens had registered the name 'Cincinnati Railraiders' back in July.

In an article from the October 5th edition of the Cincinnati Post, they reported that, "the Ducks researched as far back as 1900, and were unable to find a professional sports team - in the minors or majors - any college team, or any high school team that has used the new name the Ducks plan to announce".

The Railraiders would certainley fit that description.

If everything goes according to plan, the Cincinnati Railraiders should be ready to go for next season, affiliating themselves with either the Columbus Blue Jackets or the Detroit Red Wings"

What the heck is a railraider? Only the clowns who ran the Mighty Ducks can come up with such a stupid name. I hope the Blue Jackets stay away from them.

I think we may be missing an angle here.

I know the Cincinnati area was the target of at least one Confederate raid during the Civil War. Said raid was intended, I believe, to disrupt Union rail transport. So a "Railraider" would be one of those Confederate raiders. (Working from memory here, so take with several large grains of sodium chloride ....)

So you see, this is a sneaky ploy to attract the Jackets by getting in sync with our (alleged) Civil War nickname theme .....

Just my opinion, of course. And I'll be more than happy to change it if somebody finds a better explanation.

I don't want the Blue Jackets to affiliate with the Mighty Ducks previous owners. They have no clue on how to market a hockey franchise. When the Cyclones were selling out the Gardens under their owners, it was because it had a party atmosphere and it was the place to go on a Friday or Saturday night. Then the Gardens owners got the Mighty Ducks and marketed it to kids and had trouble filling up even half the building.

Stay away Jackets!!!

BTW - my money will always go to the Blue Jackets and will never go back to any minor league team. I will rather go to my 18 Jackets game in Columbus a year than any team in Cincinnati.

By logic, wouldn't new ownership maybe, possibly, do something about that whole marketing thing?

Those discretions didn't keep the NHL out of Colorado, or Atlanta

And the new owners would bring in their marketing, which would make this a moot point, yes?

Atleast they don't want to go with the NHL's idea for a name and call themselves the Hives

Though that ALMOST would be a cool name

Just for clarification....the potential AHL team in Cincy wouldn't have new ownership. It would be the same group that owned the Cincy Mighty Ducks. They own the rights to an AHL team, even though they don't have any players. When they get affiliated with an NHL team.....then they'll have players.

Thanks Tommy.

Just to clarify, the original owners of the Cyclones marketed to the party atmosphere. The Ducks owners marketed to the kiddies. They will be the owners of the new franchise. The only qualification they have to owning a hockey team is that they own the arena.

Sorry to hijack this thread. Everyone back to discussing the Railraiders. :shakehead

True.
So then I'll further assume that they won't keep the marketing of the Ducks, which was my point.

I guess Pantyraiders was probably taken? :dunno:

Actually the name does fit well with the Civil War theme. General John Hunt Morgan led a band of raids in Southern Ohio. Every year, the Blue Jackets could schedule a exhibition game between the "North (CBJ) and the South (Cincy Railraiders)". We'll have two national anthems, the Star Spangled Banner and "Dixie". Both sung by Jessica Simpson in her Daisy Duke's. The AHLers can wear the Confederate Flag on their sleeve. Then, Globetrotter like, we have have tricky Nick run circles around those nasty confederate AHLers while Nash scores fancy goals. During first intermission, Stinger plays Roscoe P. Coltrain and chases the General Lee around the ice. Then at second intermission, Curly comes out and throws a bucket of confetti on an unsuspecting fan. :biglaugh:

Apart from the name/ownership/marketing/etc., on the surface having the CBJ AHL affiliate in Cincy would seem to make sense. But I also like the idea that folks in another part of the country have a reason to follow Blue Jacket hockey.

Interested to know from Cincy posters perspective (again, apart from ownership mumbo-jumbo) whether being affiliatd with the Jackets would up your interest in your city's hockey team. I assume people from Cincy already make the trip to C-bus for NHL games, so I don't see the affiliation having any benefit to the big club. Saves on gas?

And, as RD pointed out, when is the 'Cuse contract up?

And whats wrong with the Cincy Blue Jackets for a team name?

The primary problem is that it may cause confusion for people outside of Ohio with who is the NHL team and who is the AHL team. It's not like if you say "Which team is the NHL team: Adirondack Red Wings or Detroit Red Wings" and there would be an issue. It's when your going down the street in another outside of Ohio and saying, "Which team is the NHL team: Cincinnati Blue Jackets or Columbus Blue Jackets?" that you may have confusion.

The other argument could be Inferior Complex Disorder. It may come across as kind of rubbing it in the Cincy area that they are minor to Columbus.

Syracuse seems to have been good. We've attracted some Crunch fans to being Blue Jackets fans. But for every Syracuse fan we've attracted, I would think we would multiply it by at least 5 Cincy fans by being located so close.

Personally, it doesn't impact me much, as I'm as unlikely to drive to Cincy to see the minor league team as I am unlikely to drive to Syracuse to see them. But from a marketing perspective, attracting Cincinnati fans to the minor league affiliate of the CBJ could be more likely to open up the doors for them to come up to Columbus for a game to see the big team. At least more than probably drive down here from Syracuse.

plus, callups, send downs, rehabs, etc are all so much easier.

im in dayton and all we have is a low a affilliate to the reds. but we get a lot of rehabbing players. and i know 1 reason they are so successful with attendance is because we are watching guys who will 1 day play for the reds(most fans fav team in dayton). ive gotten to see dunn, kearns, pena, etc since they came 5 or 6 years ago

The people that have said the affiliation with the Crunch is through 2006-2007 are correct. If Cinci is still planning on fielding a team next year, it won't be a Jackets affiliate. Unless Columbus wants to break the contract.

Everything we've ever heard is that management likes the relationship as it is. Yeah, Cinci is closer, but I've taken the flight from here to Cbus. The noon flight gets you into town in plenty of time to check in, have some dinner, and still make the arena on time. So players can make it the same day. Makes it tough for coaches to just pop down to watch practices, etc. but it can be done.

We go through these rumors at least 2-3 times a year locally. Sometimes Cinci, sometimes Indy. It generally starts with someone reading part of the last round of rumors and writing a new article somewhere stating 'it's being talked about' and starting the process all over again.

No denying that. As I mentioned, there are drawbacks to the distance. Was just saying it can be done in a day. Personally, I really like the guys we have here now, but if affiliates were to switch and another club came in, I'm sure I would like them as well.

Just everything we've heard points to a solid relationship between the two ownership groups, and a contract that doesn't allow for a cincy affiliate next year.
