Elias news??

Have there been any reports on how he is doing? I know he skated for the first time 2 or 3 weeks ago, and was looking to return early November if everything went well. Is he on schedule, and when he comes back do you think he will be sitting out a lot of games.

During a recent Devils broadcast, someone said that Elias has gone from skating every other day to four times per week, which would be a little more.

I don't think Elias will miss many games once he returns because I don't think he will be activated until he is very close to 100%.

In order to activate him, the Devils will be moving 2-3 players active players. That means 2-3 starters, so Elias will be in the lineup the day he is activated.

He is skating by himself and hasn't even begun practicing with the team. The doctors are monitoring him daily making sure he doesn't have any setbacks. I've always said I'd be shocked to see him before December.

The Devils need more scoring from guys like Brylin, Langenbrunner and Madden. An occasional goal from Rasmussen, Pando and Marshall would be nice too. Otherwise, there is going to be too much scoring pressure on Gomez, Mogs, Parise, Gio and Kozy. We have had a good power play so far, so hopefully Martin and Rafy can keep launching bombs from the point. Of course if nobody is screening down low, we could have MacInnis and Iafrate manning the point and it wouldn't matter.

I'm a Rangers fan, but I hope he comes back healthy and dominates. I just like watching good hockey and good hockey is what Elias shows us all.

Elias can't solve the Devils problems. Whenever he palys a game he will have to get his timing and chemistry together. Plus other teams will focus on him and that won't allow another Devils to make up the slack.

It is difficult to not enjoy the Devils' misery, but i hope the best for Elias. I will hate to see him paired with Gomez and whoever though...Gomez does a good job setting him up...blecht.

I'm not happy about the news in the Post today! Asking him to start in Albany to put the cap problem off. May not be back until after Christmas. Do you guys think this could happen? I want to see him play when he's healthy. And in my opinion, just getting him back improves the defence, by improving the offence greatly.

I'd imagine and maybe I'm wrong, if Elias is good to go and Lamorello is keeping him off hte Devils roster for cap reasons, his agent will start chirping anyhow as it might only diminish his value next summer when he's a UFA. By the sounds of things, Louey's going to have a diff. time making things work to keep him in the fold then too.....

I just hope Lou isn't keeping Elias out of the lineup just for cap reasons. When he is ready he should be playing. It does depend on the circumstances but when he is in the lineup it gives the devils a better chance to win...wins that won't come easy for the Devs this year.

I agree. Another thing that makes it important for Elias to play when he is ready is that he is a great defencive forward. When he is ready he needs to play.

Leaving arguably your best player out of struggling lineup for cap reasons is beyond ridiculous and Lou's intelligence has never been in question before.

If this was Long Island and Mad Mike was calling the shots then I'd be left shaking my head, but I'm sure Elias' prolonged absence if health related and has little if anything to do with the Devils cap woes.

Elias is recovering from a disease that has attacked his liver. He is skating on his own several days per week but has yet to join the team for practice. My best guess is that he will skate with the Devils for a week or two (meaning he is completely recovered), do a 3-game stint in Albany to attempt to get some semblance of timing back, and then rejoin the Devils and come off IR. I have always believed it would be December (at the earliest) before the Devils play with Elias, but some believe it could be late November. Regardless, his return is still at least a month away.

Lets not forget he has to get into game shape and has to be able to take a hit. Oh wait its the new NHL, he has to be able to take a light push. :eek:

Pardon my ignorance, but by being taken off IR, does that mean his return is imminent?

I know there's already a thread out there, but after that ugly offensive showing against the Sabres I need a fresh place to get updates on his recovery. Seriously, what is the latest news? Everyone knows that his return can't be rushed but the Devils need him back ASAP and it would be nice to have a better idea of what kind of time frame we're looking at. What are you talking about? We played our game, and scored 3 goals. Yes, we coughed it up but scoring was not the problem. Scott Gomez is shooting, Gionta is skating his *** off, Langenbrunner looks like he might be ready to contribute, and Parise continues to improve.

When we get Elias back it will be a huge bonus. We just made a cap move with Oliwa, I would guess that if we make a another move that would be a strong signal that Elias is very close to returning.

Haven't heard anything definite but, I talked to a friend of mine who is a doctor and said that Hep A is something that one would want to make sure they fully recover from before trying to get back into a grueling NHL schedule. I'm sure they're not cutting any corners. A hasty return could seriously impact his health.

It was always thanksgiving at the earliest and even that was wishful thinking. Patrik has just (or is about to) started to skate with the team, so I would guess that it cant be TOO far at this point.

During a recent Devils telecast, Stan Fischler and Matt Laughlin mentioned that Larry Robinson told some reporters that Elias had just started to work-out again after a short period of not doing so. Stan Fischler, who had Hepatitis A himself many years ago, said late December to early January is a likely return frame. However, that was his speculation.

The Devils are not keeping Patrik Elias off the roster for cap concerns. That's an absurd thought.

I think he'll come back strong enough and end up with about .8 PPG from the time he comes back to the end of the season.

no, but apparently he shouldbe cleared to practice soon. after that, its thought that it will take him a good 3 weeks to get back into game shape. so id say expect him back around new years

I assume Oliwa is still getting paid, so I doubt the team would waive anyone else other than Langdon. Unless Steinbrenner just bought the Devils, there's no way Lou is going to pay a player millions of dollars to not play.

this is a lot more serious than Lou or anyone else is letting on.

The rest of the season would not be a surprise, the rest of his life would mean he waited too long to get proper treatment during the initial stages, he pushed himself too hard, too fast, both resulting in permanent damage to other organs(kidneys), or he has hep "C" not hep "A" which is incurable but maintainable and contracted via blood contact. He would not be able to perform at a professional athletic level if he has "C".

Edit: He would be a threat to other players, if they were exposed to his blood if he had "C" and would probably be barred from playing if he had "C", so I doubt that he does.

December 19-27 is a holiday roster freeze. If Elias is in game shape before the 27th (could be a stretch or could be legit) then we might see a deal this week.
