puckwild 10-10-2005, 01:32 PM Have there been any reports on how he is doing? I know he skated for the first time 2 or 3 weeks ago, and was looking to return early November if everything went well. Is he on schedule, and when he comes back do you think he will be sitting out a lot of games.
David Puddy 10-10-2005, 02:34 PM During a recent Devils broadcast, someone said that Elias has gone from skating every other day to four times per week, which would be a little more.
I don't think Elias will miss many games once he returns because I don't think he will be activated until he is very close to 100%.

I don't think Elias will miss many games once he returns because I don't think he will be activated until he is very close to 100%.He better not miss ANY games once he is activated. In order to activate him, the Devils will be moving 2-3 players active players. That means 2-3 starters, so Elias will be in the lineup the day he is activated.
GentlemanOfLeisure 10-10-2005, 08:38 PM Dont be suprised if Elias misses more like 20 games than just 10. Trust me, dont be suprised.
4check22 10-10-2005, 08:54 PM Dont be suprised if Elias misses more like 20 games than just 10. Trust me, dont be suprised.Oh, absolutely. Ten games is ridiculous. He is skating by himself and hasn't even begun practicing with the team. The doctors are monitoring him daily making sure he doesn't have any setbacks. I've always said I'd be shocked to see him before December.
The Devils need more scoring from guys like Brylin, Langenbrunner and Madden. An occasional goal from Rasmussen, Pando and Marshall would be nice too. Otherwise, there is going to be too much scoring pressure on Gomez, Mogs, Parise, Gio and Kozy. We have had a good power play so far, so hopefully Martin and Rafy can keep launching bombs from the point. Of course if nobody is screening down low, we could have MacInnis and Iafrate manning the point and it wouldn't matter.
MisterUnspoken 10-10-2005, 09:57 PM I'm a Rangers fan, but I hope he comes back healthy and dominates. I just like watching good hockey and good hockey is what Elias shows us all.
JDevils3 10-11-2005, 12:25 AM If he comes back Dec. 1 (like most people seem to think he will) that will be 24 games. If he gets anywhere near 60 games played this season, I will be incredibly happy.

That means 2-3 starters, so Elias will be in the lineup the day he is activated.I would agree with you, but the NHL schedule is going to be grueling after the Olympics break. December is also a very active month, 15 games in the month even with the Christmas break. During an 18 day period from Peal Habor Day through two days before Christmas, the Devils will play ten games.
If he comes back Dec. 1 (like most people seem to think he will) that will be 24 games. If he gets anywhere near 60 games played this season, I will be incredibly happy. As long as Patrik Elias is healthy for the stretch run and the playoffs, it will be a positive thing for New Jersey.

Left winger Patrik Elias skated prior to practice and underwent a tough on-ice workout run by strength and conditioning coordinator Mike Vasalani.
Sounds like Patty is getting back into shape. I'm still saying December, but this is good news for sure.

puckwild 10-13-2005, 09:34 AM Got to like this quote in today's Star-Ledger though! "Elias, who figures to return late this month or early next month, Madden and Rafalski are logical choices to wear an A". Even if the quote is just from the writer.
MissionHockey 10-13-2005, 10:59 AM Thats great news, and with Elias back in the lineup you look at the lineup and it does look much stronger.
Elias-Gomez-Gionta

John Flyers Fan 10-16-2005, 11:36 AM Apparently Elias had a set back, unrelated to the Hepititas:
Patrik Elias suffered a setback in his comeback with an abdominal muscle strain that has prompted him to curb his training schedule. He has yet to practice with the team in his comeback from hepatitis. . . . Colin White left the game after two with a groin strain.

Main Devil 10-17-2005, 05:01 PM Elias can't solve the Devils problems. Whenever he palys a game he will have to get his timing and chemistry together. Plus other teams will focus on him and that won't allow another Devils to make up the slack.

It is difficult to not enjoy the Devils' misery, but i hope the best for Elias. I will hate to see him paired with Gomez and whoever though...Gomez does a good job setting him up...blecht.
Elias won't solve all the Devils' problems but he will sure help.
phil macrackin 10-20-2005, 11:11 AM So, any update on this abdominal strain? Is it serious enough to give Elias a whole new problem to deal with or are the doctors just telling him to chill slightly?

Any player missing that much time will likely play a few games in the AHL, to get timing back etc.

I understand that. But what they are talking about sounds like it could be a month. And based just as much on the cap, as his health.

He can't play in Albany for a month. After a 2-week conditioning stint he'd be subject to waivers.

Good point! I hope that's the rule. I'm not familiar witht he rules regarding conditioning, etc...
I'd imagine and maybe I'm wrong, if Elias is good to go and Lamorello is keeping him off hte Devils roster for cap reasons, his agent will start chirping anyhow as it might only diminish his value next summer when he's a UFA. By the sounds of things, Louey's going to have a diff. time making things work to keep him in the fold then too.....
goin2hell 10-24-2005, 02:17 PM I just hope Lou isn't keeping Elias out of the lineup just for cap reasons. When he is ready he should be playing. It does depend on the circumstances but when he is in the lineup it gives the devils a better chance to win...wins that won't come easy for the Devs this year.

I agree. Another thing that makes it important for Elias to play when he is ready is that he is a great defencive forward. When he is ready he needs to play.
salostyle 10-26-2005, 02:35 AM Leaving arguably your best player out of struggling lineup for cap reasons is beyond ridiculous and Lou's intelligence has never been in question before.
If this was Long Island and Mad Mike was calling the shots then I'd be left shaking my head, but I'm sure Elias' prolonged absence if health related and has little if anything to do with the Devils cap woes.
At least that's my hope seeing as how I just plucked him off waivers in my Yahoo Fantasy Pool the other day assuming he'd be back within a week or two.
Do you guys seriously think he could be out as long as Christmas and into the New Year? What's he doing these days...like is he skating with the team or being a couch potato? In your opinion how long are we going to have to wait until Patrick laces them up for the first time?

In your opinion how long are we going to have to wait until Patrick laces them up for the first time?Yes he COULD be out as long as Christmas. This isn't the flu, people. Elias is recovering from a disease that has attacked his liver. He is skating on his own several days per week but has yet to join the team for practice. My best guess is that he will skate with the Devils for a week or two (meaning he is completely recovered), do a 3-game stint in Albany to attempt to get some semblance of timing back, and then rejoin the Devils and come off IR. I have always believed it would be December (at the earliest) before the Devils play with Elias, but some believe it could be late November. Regardless, his return is still at least a month away.

phil macrackin 10-28-2005, 11:31 PM I know there's already a thread out there, but after that ugly offensive showing against the Sabres I need a fresh place to get updates on his recovery. Blackjack 10-28-2005, 11:35 PM What are you talking about? We played our game, and scored 3 goals. Yes, we coughed it up but scoring was not the problem. When we get Elias back it will be a huge bonus. We just made a cap move with Oliwa, I would guess that if we make a another move that would be a strong signal that Elias is very close to returning.

Heat McManus 11-19-2005, 02:00 PM Haven't heard anything definite but, I talked to a friend of mine who is a doctor and said that Hep A is something that one would want to make sure they fully recover from before trying to get back into a grueling NHL schedule. It was always thanksgiving at the earliest and even that was wishful thinking. Patrik has just (or is about to) started to skate with the team, so I would guess that it cant be TOO far at this point.
David Puddy 11-19-2005, 06:22 PM During a recent Devils telecast, Stan Fischler and Matt Laughlin mentioned that Larry Robinson told some reporters that Elias had just started to work-out again after a short period of not doing so. Stan Fischler, who had Hepatitis A himself many years ago, said late December to early January is a likely return frame. However, that was his speculation.
The Devils are not keeping Patrik Elias off the roster for cap concerns. That's an absurd thought.

I assume Oliwa is still getting paid, so I doubt the team would waive anyone else other than Langdon. Unless Steinbrenner just bought the Devils, there's no way Lou is going to pay a player millions of dollars to not play.
He Lives! For anyone who didn't catch the TV broadcast, they showed Elias skating and shooting by himself this morning. He's been skating for "about a week without a setback". Now we just have wait for him to get strong enough to skate with the team.

Tao Jones 12-08-2005, 03:18 PM The rest of the season would not be a surprise, the rest of his life would mean he waited too long to get proper treatment during the initial stages, he pushed himself too hard, too fast, both resulting in permanent damage to other organs(kidneys), or he has hep "C" not hep "A" which is incurable but maintainable and contracted via blood contact. He would not be able to perform at a professional athletic level if he has "C".
Edit: He would be a threat to other players, if they were exposed to his blood if he had "C" and would probably be barred from playing if he had "C", so I doubt that he does.
TeNeIghtY 12-08-2005, 04:31 PM "The abdominal strain that already has twice halted Patrik Elias' rehab from hepatitis is really a torn abdominal muscle, The Post has learned. He has resumed skating in hopes of joining the team for practice by New Year's, for possible play by the end of January.
Or, he could stay out through then Olympic break for further conditioning, also allowing Lou Lamoriello more time to find a solution to the $3.3 million of full-season salary he must clear under the cap before Elias can play. "
Jared Ramsden 12-08-2005, 08:17 PM Honestly, I don't think anybody really knows for sure. I'd like to actually hear something from the team, instead of just pure speculation from various media types....as far as I'm concerned, that all it is, speculation, until I hear it from someone off the team.....
GentlemanOfLeisure 12-08-2005, 10:10 PM Lou Lamoriello did say during the florida road trip while on fox sports new york that Elias would be back "Before you know it".
That is a direct quote.
then again, How many times was stevens just weeks away from returing two years ago?
devsfan8 12-13-2005, 04:12 PM December 19-27 is a holiday roster freeze. If Elias is in game shape before the 27th (could be a stretch or could be legit) then we might see a deal this week.
He is practicing currently. (not with the team) Devils have always kept things quiet. We shall see......
