The Mad Crapper 10-08-2005, 08:26 AM 1) They didn't dress Oliwa. Say what you want, but you need a player in the game to give you a spark when needed. We had no one to do that last night. Heck, when Brashear went looking to start something with "anyone" ...who did he go after...an overmatched Marshall. Who finally realized that its smart not to fight him & risk injury. Fighting is part of the game Larry, utilize it!!!
2) The Devils who are so used to getting 2 goals & sitting on it...better realize that this isn't the same game from 2 years ago. Thus, they need to stay focused & keep playing hard.
3) That puck was in the goal. I saw it clear as day. My wife who BARELY watches the game saw it. This is a dead issue. There is no controversy.
4) If Mat-Make-Me-Upchuck continues to be non-existent in these games, trade his ***. So far, between preseason & the first 2 games, you almost never hear his name during play. The same goes for Colin White. I'd rather see Brown & Hale in there because to me, they showed they both wanted to play this preseason. If White & Upchuck continue to play in this matter, I would have both their ***** on the trading block. They should be ashamed of their play thus far.
5) Robinson needs to lay off the hair-coloring. He looks like a tool with that fake blonde hair. Leave it silver. If it distracts me, its gotta be distracting the team. It looks AWFUL!!! Yeah...I'm reaching here (& venting) but he should stop coloring it! Looks stupid.
Let's see what happens tonight agianst the Rags. Hopefully they shook off the nonsense from yesterday.
4check22 10-08-2005, 08:52 AM Interesting points. But before you trade some players for this one bad performance, let's see if these professional athletes have the ability to turn things around. It was one match. I certainly wasn't ready to award the Stanley Cup to the Devils after man-handling Pittsburgh the other night. One match. If Matvichuk (et al) can't raise his (their) game(s), Lou will deal with the situation(s). As for Larry's hair, I couldn't agree with you more.
The Mad Crapper 10-08-2005, 10:36 AM I know 4check22...I'm mostly venting the obvious.
My point is that with Stevens gone, someone needs to step up & be the big hitter on the teams & make opponents fearful of crossing the blue line. Hale & Brown did just that in the preseason. However, they're not playing right now.
Someone needs to step it up. Martin has been doing his job in filling Neids's shoes.

How about that hit White gave Forsberg? And Matvichuk has been playing physical in both games. How do you want them to stand out or hear their names during the game? The way I see things, they are the type of players that if you don't hear their names..it was a good night. Because if you do hear their names..its because they screwed up. They will play defense and play physical. I would have loved to seen how beat up we would have been without them in the back. Even if you don't like what you have seen..its only been two games, everybody needs time to adjust. And if you trust Hale and Brown over White and Matvi on defense, than god help us all.
Lets just take it easy on the team. I think they have been playing great..it just looked like the phantom goal made the whole team sink. Today is a new day.

You have to admit, White put a heck of a nice lick on Forsberg. I was surprised he got up.

To me, the real question isn't "Was the puck in the net", but "Did the goal result from a play that should have been an infraction?". The way I saw it, Gagne committed interference in knocking Matvichuk into Brodeur, jarring the puck free and into the net. IMHO, it should have been no-goal-and-a-penalty for that reason - whether the puck crossed the line or not.

Gagne nudged a guy who was sitting on the puck. You expected that to be a penalty? c'mon, never have I seen a penalty called on a play like that.
Blackjack 10-08-2005, 04:16 PM Gagne cross-checked a guy who was sitting on the puck.

Unthinkable 10-08-2005, 05:28 PM 2) The Devils who are so used to getting 2 goals & sitting on it...better realize that this isn't the same game from 2 years ago. Thus, they need to stay focused & keep playing hard.
Another factor for the loss last night aside from the obvious momentum changer surrounding the goal controversy was the teams inability to finish with the man advantage. So far the penalty killing has been good like usual, but the Devils just don't have that killer instinct attitude shaping up on the power play yet. I also want to see the Devils respond appropriately with some similar crashing of the net plays when other teams decide their gameplan will incorporate making physical contact with Brodeur, knocking his own defenders into him, and poking frozen pucks from under the pads into the net. You hate to see a team penalized for closely abiding by the rules which were clearly spelled out before preseason began only to have them later ignored in mid-game like the Gagne crosscheck on Matvichuk which was a play that was outlawed in the NHL prior to last nights game. Its hard to rationalize why something like this happened last night when you had Larry Robinson commenting the day before or day of that at this rate, the refs will have to replace their whistles by the mid-season point from the overabundance of calls made.

I think you have to give the new defenders 20 games or so to allow them time to adjust to both the new rules and a new team with a very rigid emphasis on playing sound positional defense. Its not going to be an instant overnight adjustment for some of these guys when you consider how differently the Devils run their organization from other teams.

Have you watched the NHL for the past 5 days? You can be penalized for casting a shadow on your opponent in today's NHL.
