I like how Niedermayer had to go to a second rate franchise to get his 'C'. Must be real satisfying.

IMO, it's appropriate considering he was only our best defenseman when #4 was injured... and in a way it avoids the uncomfortable situation of the C passing from a real leader in Stevens to a real block of wood in Niedermayer. Now maybe it can pass to someone with fire in his belly, like Madden or Parise.

I disagree...I don't think the Devils are a second rate franchise. They are one of the most well run organizations, if not the most well run, in the NHL.

He does have a great point. Had Niedermayer resigned in Jersey, he would've officially been made captain the instant Stevens retired, probably without question. Thus, when Blackjack says the only way he'll get the C is on a second-rate franchise(not his exact words, but pretty much what he meant), he is indeed calling the Devils a second-rate franchise.

How do you know? Never happened. All I know is that Niedermayer wore the 'A' for years while the real leader wore the 'C'. Maybe the Devils would have kept 3 'A's like they're doing now. Oh, and Rob Niedermayer wearing an 'A'? :biglaugh:

Niedermayer did wear the C while Stevens was out. Call me crazy, but I think that's a very good indicator that he'd be getting the C when Stevens retired. Usually teams don't go to the extent of naming an interm captain while the regular captain is injured, only to go without a captain when he retires.

I wouldn't say I'm trolling, I'd say 10.16.1974 has a bit of a point. All indications were that Niedermayer was the next Devils captain in the event Stevens retired, and I'm sure most of you believed that as well. How an opinion can change in such a short time. Well, I did experience that when Paul Kariya left, but I don't think it was to this extent.

You're splitting hairs. Niedermayer would never have been captain as long as Stevens was here, he left before Stevens was retired. And yes, you're trolling here. When we got Mogilny I didn't go to the Leafs board to rub their faces in it.

Anyway,you say he wouldn't have gotten the C before Stevens retired. Very true. But, I'd also venture a guess that Detroit's next captain won't be getting the C on his chest till Steve Yzerman retires, either. You can't compare one of the greatest leaders in NHL history to a guy like Niedermayer. But, it's painfully obvious that Niedermayer was the most likely choice for captain once Stevens left.
