"Bergfors said he expects to sign with the Devils in the next day or so and play in Albany rather than with his junior team"

Bad news for St John's....good news for fans in Albany.

Wow. That could be great news. It would probably be better for him to just go straight to Albany. Polish his game instead of waiting an extra year. Good news.

That sucks for the Fog Devils losing their first overall pick w/out having him even suit up. I wonder why he turned heads in Jersey so fast, it's virtually unheard of to have our first round pick of the year stay, I don't even think Marty has had that distinction.

He didn't. Petr Sykora did, though. After being a first round pick in the summer of '95, he played 5 games in Albany and *63* games in New Jersey in 1995-1996.

Then, the Devils didn't draft one European skater in the first round between Sykora and Bergfors. North American players usually *need* more development time, having only ever played junior or college, while European players tend to have already played with and against grown men and are more ready for the jump to professional hockey. Hell, Bergfors played on the same club as Dick Tarnstrom, Olli Jokinen, Scott Thornton, Mikael Samuelsson, Niclas Havelid, and Kyle Calder last year.

The Devils did have a *fifth* rounder stick once (Salomonsson, 2001 - but then again, he was 27 years old!).

I have to say the kid did not look lost or out of place in yesterday's Devils-rangers game at all. I can see why they feel he is ready for AHL hockey at least.

I wouldn't at all surprised if he stays up here for a few games before going down to Albany.

I think he'll start in Albany and end the season here. Maybe, say, the last 39 games... since 40 games counts as a pro season?

He maybe could take Elias spot as long as he is gone...?

After hearing that Bergfors played in a preseason game and put up points my optimism for him ever being a Fog Devil went from moderate to none-existent.

Whatever is best for the player I guess.

It’s not like Bergfors would have been a huge impact for the Fog Devils ;) ;)

2-6 2nd last place in the Q(Rimouski can tie the Devils with a loss) 20 goals for 40 goals against, 5 losses is a row.

We did win our first game Vs Saint John(other expansion Q team) and our home opener Vs Lewiston in a shootout.

If your asking how many games counts for a pro season, its somewhere between 23-26...don't remember the exact figure.

Yeah I know.. we're in trouble. Though it's not like it wasn't expected.

Exactly, I don't know what expansion team has come into any league and become a contender right away.

Sykora was/is a late birthday, so he was almost 19 by the time he started as a rookie. Plus he had played parts of two seasons in the IHL. Bergfors won't be 19 until the last quarter of the season.

From last game it appeared as though Bergfors has NHL hands, skating and vision. Good ones at that. But his positioning was weak and his strength needs improvement - but playing with older guys in the AHL is a better chance for him to develop those aspects than performing damage control with the Fog Devils.

The New Jersey Devils signed their 2005 first round pick Niklas Bergfors to a contract and reassigned him to Albany of the American Hockey League. Because Bergfors played in Europe last year, he is able to play in the AHL this season and can be called up at any time by the Devils.

Bergfors signed for the rookie maximum of $850,000.

Does this mean to call him up there has to be cap room of $850K? If so, I do not think we will see him this year unless someone at that salary is sent down or injured making equal money.

It's good. That means the FO loves him as much as we do.

[low voice]^^^starting to wonder if Bergfors is our best forward prospect. He's definatly not as good as Parise right now, but he is 3 years younger...[/low voice]

Isn't there a rule that if he is called up he cannot make more then the Rookie Maximum? I think Parise is making $700K...Ironically, if Bergfors is called up I think he will be listed as less then the 850K he signed for. Confusing.

Can the Sweden Board count on regular updates on Bergfors this season?

This is pretty cool. Bergfors has the opportunity to be the youngest swede ever to play an NHL game.

BTW, what if it was the world cup today when you had to have 3 players under 23 on the roster... it looks A LOT better for Sweden today than it did a year ago. :)

So, what does Lou think about the WJC? Any chance that Bergfors is released for national duty?

If Albany is in the middle of a playoff chase and it's tight then Bergfors probably wouldn't go anywhere. That's extremely unlikely. Under any other circuimstance I think he'd be allowed to go to the WJC.

from today's times useless:

Rats look good on paper (http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=406501&category=RIVERRATS&BCCode=&newsdate=10/7/2005&TextPage=2)

Bergfors is practicing with the Rats but cannot play until his immigration papers are completed. "He has to go through the process of becoming an employee here in the United States," Rats general manager Chris Lamoriello said. "That will take a little bit of time. We're hoping it's soon."
