KeithBWhittington 10-05-2003, 06:37 PM More than Likely, Heatley won't play for Atlanta and Dan Snyder certainly will not (very sad about him). How does this game play out? I don't see Atlanta pulling another last minute victory without Heatley. Anybody got some good opinions about how this will progress?

i like that CBJ are starting on the road. i know it is only one game, but it'll be a nice start and test as to how they'll handle themselves on the road. no heatley obviously hurts atlanta. i think columbus will get the win. denis has been fantastic in the preseason, lets hope the penalty problems of the last few games do not continue.
jacketracket 10-06-2003, 03:57 AM With this morning's terrible news, I would certainly hope that the game is postponed indefinately.
Enjoying the season opener---against the Thrashers---seems trivial at the moment.

very true.

My thoughts are with his family and loved ones in this tragic time.
I know most players would want their teammates to keep on without them.
Guys like Snyder who scrap their way to the NHL are a large part of what makes this game great. I hope his team, and teammates, can put something special together to remember and honor him.
DJAnimosity 10-06-2003, 06:41 AM The game will not, and should not, be postponed.
I like the Jackets' chances, although the Thrashers will likely be fired up and playing hard in honor of their fallen teammates. It won't be an easy game; it will probably be a downright uncomfortable, awkward environment, but I think it'll be a good test right off the bat, and we'll handle it well.
3mta3 10-06-2003, 06:52 AM ...It won't be an easy game; it will probably be a downright uncomfortable, awkward environment...
We're familiar with those situations.
DJAnimosity 10-06-2003, 07:01 AM I just meant that in the sense that Snyder's death will likely be on the minds of all in attendance and his absence will be greatly apparent.

I know exactly what you meant, and I agree with you. My point was that Columbus has played through tragedy as well - that's all.
DJAnimosity 10-06-2003, 07:36 AM OK, gotcha. I hope the Thrashers can play through tragedy better than the Jackets did. The Brittany Cecil tragedy seemed to deeply affect the team, and they never got untracked after it occurred.
Mr Brownstone 10-06-2003, 08:10 AM I think the only way the game gets postponed would be at the request of Snyder's family. I can't see that happening.
jackets63 10-06-2003, 09:40 AM There's going to be a terrible feeling looming over the whole building for this game. I see the Thrashers playing way over their heads this whole season.
It will depend on how the Thrashers react to thier emotions. Either thier heads wont be in the game at all and we'll walk all over them. Or they'll use it as a rallying point and no team on earth will be able to stand in thier way.
Under normal circumstances, I predict us coming through with a 4-2 victory. But under these circumstances, I see us losing 5-3.

Seems like trying to play the game within a day---possibly on THE day---of the service would be, in a way, like incorporating the grieving into some sort of macabre opening night ceremony.
I don't think the league should shut down but, IMO, the Atlanta hockey "community" might be spared the commotion.

Depends on how you want to remember Dan. Is it going to be mourning his death or celebrating his life? If its the latter, then what better way than to go on with the game that he loved so much? This could be one day out of the whole season for a game to take on some real meaning. Theres more that theyre playing for than the $million contracts and CBAs and TV deals and playoff bearths to get your name on a hunk of metal.
I think its unfortunate that it has to be us that plays them, because something deep down might have me pulling for them on Thursday.
DJAnimosity 10-06-2003, 10:22 AM Atlanta didn't even cancel their preseason game against Florida the day after the accident occurred and, let's face it, Snyder's life pretty much ended that day. The Thrashers aren't going to cancel a regular-season game a week after the accident occurred.
Roman Lyashenko, Trevor Ettinger, Herb Brooks, and Dan Snyder will ALL be remembered this season, but you can't go canceling games and stopping the game that all of these guys loved. The best way to memorialize the players is to play the game and appreciate the sport they all dedicated their lives to.
JF Omalycat 10-06-2003, 12:09 PM Either way, this really sucks.
Heatley deserves a good smackin around, IMO. Good people shouldn't die in such stupid tragedies. I feel for Snyder's family.
I can't believe our opening night gets us caught up in this. I think it will be an uncomfortable game, all around. I certainly don't want us to lose, but you hate to hit someone while they're down, you know. (unless they come out on fire, which is just as possible)
As I said, this sucks, either way.
Samkow 10-06-2003, 02:26 PM Atlanta is going to be very flat. A player is dead adn there Franchise Players Carrer is in Jephordy.

jacketracket 10-07-2003, 03:57 AM Apparently, there was some talk
of petitioning the league to have the opener postponed, but the Snyder family felt that the game should be played.
As a CBJ fan, I would have hoped---for reasons stated earlier---that the game would not be played. Selfishly, I hate to see the Jackets attempt to open the season on the road in this sort of situation.
jacketracket 10-07-2003, 04:24 AM Apparently, per Atlanta GM Don Waddell, there was some thought given to petitioning the league to postpone the game, but the Snyder family felt that the game should be played.
As a CBJ fan, I would have hoped that the game would not be played. IMO, the last thing a team with a history of awful road play needs is to try and open the season in this type of environment.
3mta3 10-07-2003, 05:23 AM According to 10 TV last night the NHL will make an official decision on postponing the game today. I would be shocked if it were postponed. The only thing I can think of that would cause a problem is when the service was for Snyder. I wouldn't want anyone from the organization to miss that because of a game.

3mta3 10-07-2003, 12:31 PM I just read that the family wants the team to play on, without any interruption in the schedule.
