Both were expected to be signed today and they were. It is comforting knowing that Smid will be playing here for sure this season. Now the focus will shift to Salei.

Good news.
Hope they let Smid play 1 full season on the top pairing in Portland.

Good move to get Smid sign now. I would hate to wait until next summer when we could have lost him back to the draft.

All NHL players get guaranteed contracts.

OC Register (http://www.ocregister.com/ocr/2005/08/25/sections/sports/pro/article_648172.php)
Pahlsson, 27, will receive $625,000 this season and $650,000 in 2006-07, after which he stands to become an unrestricted free agent under terms of the league's new collective bargaining agreement.
...The Ducks also announced Wednesday the signing of defenseman Ladislav Smid, their first-round selection in the 2004 entry draft, to a three-year, entry-level contract that would pay him $984,200 per season if he plays in the NHL.
...He is likely to begin his North American professional career at Portland, Maine, of the American League.
"This kid has a chance to be a special player," Ducks general manager Brian Burke said. "He has size, tremendous vision, good skating ability, and when you see his puck movement, you would never guess that he's not even 20."
...The conditional selection in the 2007 entry draft received by the Ducks in Tuesday's trade that sent left wing Mike Leclerc to the Phoenix Coyotes is a fourth-rounder but could rise to the second round if Leclerc re-signs with Phoenix. He stands to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Similarly, the conditional pick from the Rangers in the Rucchin deal is likely to be a fourth-rounder but could increase in value if Rucchin re-signs with New York. He, too, stands to become unrestricted after the 2005-06 season.

All entry-level contracts are 2-way, there's no way around it. Smid will get around ~85K in the AHL and around 900K in the NHL.
However he will get signing bonuses which do affect the salary cap this year.

Could Smid get a serious look at the 5-6 pairing in Anaheim or is it a given he will be in Portland? I’d certainly like to see what he could do for the Pirates. Burke seems pretty high on him based on those comments.

As it stands now, we have the following pretty much all locked in on defense.
Ozolinsh
Neids
Carney
Vishnevski
Salei
Thats leaves Marshall and Popovic to fight for the 6th spot. So my answer would be expect the kid in Portland.

I think Burke will give him a chance (slim) to make the NHL roster. It will be either him or Popovic in the 6th spot, and Marshall with 7th defenseman/13th forward.
If both Popovic and Smid make the team, we could be in an interesting predictament being able to send a defenseman away for help in the forwards.
Maybe Burke is working on something with Carney, Salei, or Ozo going somewhere else.

Smid is Carney's replacement next year. Burke thinks Salei can pick up the slack and slide Smid into the open roster spot.
