DuckTales22 08-21-2005, 03:00 AM Sorry if this has already been posted more than once.
On the Ducks prospect rankings here on HF.com, Korsunov is ranked 7th yet we hear nothing from him with regards to him ever playing at the Pond. I will say that from what I've read at russianprospects.com, I've liked what I have heard about him (a physical Russian, who uses his size) and that his development has been consistant. Which brings me to my two questions:
1. What's gonna happened with him? From what I read, he sounds like he should be playing in Portland, getting lots of minutes as a top 4 defenceman.
2. If he does pan out and makes the Ducks roster in the future, should this be the way Anaheim develops its prospects? Taking their time with them, in no way shape or form attempt to rush them (like the Gauthier days) into the NHL.
I'd appreciate any comments on Korsunov in general.
Jerky Leclerc 08-21-2005, 04:06 AM Strangely, I have never heard the Ducks ever talk about him. I don't think he wants to come to North America and therefore he doesn't figure into the organizational plan. If Korsunov was serious about playing in the NHL, he would come to training camp but that has yet to happen.
McDonald19 08-21-2005, 07:54 AM I'd like him to come over to North America...but I read somewhere that European prospects drafted before 2002 become UFA's if they don't sign by next June under the new CBA. Can anyone verify?
All I know for sure is that time is running out for Korsunov and the Ducks.

Well in the future they can't do that, as European prospects now need to be signed within 2 years of being drafted just like CHL players do.

That's sad, the only Russian prospect who may work out for us and we may never see him here.
BTW, thanks for your responses.
Pepper 08-21-2005, 11:17 AM Bryz is the only russkie in Ducks organisation with a NHL future IMHO.

Vishnevski?
Ville Isopää 08-21-2005, 03:18 PM If he came over, I think he could challenge for a 3rd pair/7th D spot on the roster this fall. But as he will only be offered a 2-way contract, I doubt he's that intrested. AHL is a step back in his career so unless he'd have the option of returning to his team in Russia instead of going to AHL if he doesn't make the ducks, the chance of him comming over is probably relatively slim. However, I do think he is the 4th best defensive prospect after Smid, Popovic and Mikkelson.
I want him to go over just for camp. If he fairs well he may be given a roster spot in Anaheim, could roate the bottom pair between him and Popovic and filling in where rest is needed. But there has been little sign for him to go the america, maybe he just doesn't want to.
Ville Isopää 08-21-2005, 04:42 PM A big problem with camp for most euros is that the hockey season in europe starts a lot earlier than the NHL, meaning that they'd miss 5-10 games of the regular season to attend NHL-camp. If you're a young player trying to improve your position on the team and get more icetime, missing those games could hurt you a lot in the eyes of the coach.
I know the hockey seasons over here start earlier than in the NHL and that. But I still think it could be worth it for him. He's got an OK chance of making the team, and H'll have roster spot waiting for him when he gets back over here after ward.
lux_interior 08-21-2005, 06:03 PM God. I had forgotten about him. But no big loss. From the sounds of it, he would be a borderline NHL player, anyways.
McDonald19 08-25-2005, 09:35 AM For those of you wondering about the fate of our European prospects from earlier drafts...this will affect Korsunov along with other players like Vihko, Rybin, Jan Sandstrom, Chagodayev, etc.
