i was wondering about where ladislav smid was going to play... olesz has just signed and come over, and he was from the same draft.... just wondering if the ducks are going to leave smid in the czech league for another season, or bring him over to play some NA hockey with cincinnati and eventually anaheim

i dont know if i'm wrong for thinking this, but when brian burke passed on johnson to take ryan, i took it more as a sign that he was comfortable with smid as his future top dman, than it was that ryan was simply the best player available.... burke did entertain offers, and did say there wasnt a clear cut player he wanted at first, so i'm just wondering what others might be able to tell me about smid's future nhl potential

Anaheim scouts liked Ryan better than Johnson, so he picked Ryan. It was as simple as that, best player available in the opinion of the Ducks scouts. Burke admited he had never seen Ryan play in person but was trusting the scouts, and liked what he saw of Ryan on video and was impressed at his character during the pre-draft interview.

Smid looks like a really nice #2 guy, I doubt Burke is thinking Smid will be a #1 franchise d-man.

I spoke with GM of his Czech team Liberec. It was at time without IIHF-NHL transfer deal and he said they want at least 500 000 for him. Thats reasonable as he is first rounder.
The transfer deal is struck now and i dont know how much they will get eventually but Smid is definetely going to practice camp.

I see this guy to stay in US, even if he dont make the Ducks team. I saw him many times last year and he is mature way beyond his peers just like Olesz. He played with Jaro Modry and Jiri Fischer and that helped him a lot. He also was at ntnl.team- at this age. At some point this season, he will be donated no.15 Ducks jersey.

When you see smid play in person he clearly stands out, especially in a prospects game. I think he can be a better version of Ozolinsh, meaning a good defender as well as a good offensive player...he is a great skater.

I know alot of people like to compare him to Ohlund though.

yeah I've seen Smid a few times and his style is definetly more like Ohlund than Ozolinsh.

He stays in Czech Republic and we retain his rights and sign him next summer.

This is good news and I look forward to seeing Smid develop in N.A now!
