Who wears the "C"?

Obviously, Stevens wears it if he chooses, if not?

Madden-(see Scott Stevens speak of his leadership in the '03 SCF DVD)

Some feel his high salary will be shopped, so...

Mogilny-has he ever captained before? not North American

I think we'll see:

John Madden: C

Rafalski: A

White: A

Brodeur

I think Mogilny was the first Russian captain in the NHL (Sabres during 93-94). I think Madden would make the most sense with Elias gone. He's had the longest tenure on the club outside of Elias/Pandolfo/Brylin.

I remember Elias being very proud of wearing the 'A' and being a team leader. So if he's not Captain, he's should at least be keeping that.

Madden - C
Rafalski - A
Langenbrunner - A

Note:

I'd give the C to Brodeur if I could.
Langenbrunner or Mad Dog could be Captain if I had to pick.
When Elias comes back, he gets Rafalski's A.

I agree Elias gets a letter when he returns. I had trouble choosing the second "A", because I can't remember the last time the Devils iced a team without a defenseman wearing a letter. I like Brylin over Langs, but who knows who will still be here come Oct. 1.

c-madden
a-rafalski

w/elias
c-elias

the thing is, it would take time for the new teammates to become leaders so i have them listed as captains since they are devils

I agree, with Elias in the line-up:

C- Patty
A- Madden
A- Rafalski

I think without Elias they might go with 3 A's.
Maybe Langenbrunner or Pando.

Of course this is all assuming no Scotty!

IMO Madden shouldn't wear the "C"

Elias is a great choice.

Rafalski is my second choice.

Stevens is my last choice should he come back.

Why not?

Elias is a great choice.

Yes, after Christmas if a definitive leader has not been already established

Rafalski is my second choice.

I think he gets an "A", and it is hard to see a Robinson-led team with an F as Captain, even so Matvichuk, Malakhov, and McGillis are all older than Brian, but not a biggie so was Fetisov, Daneyko,Albelin, etc. White is NOT(if ever)ready to Captain. Martin is not a Thornton, Alfreddson, Lindros type. Hale no. That leaves a good case for Rafalski, I don't think he has Captain "personality" (I didn't think Niedsermama(ok it's the last time I promise, I hope he comes back one day) did either) Just MHO.

Stevens is my last choice should he come back.

It's his if he wants it. Did Stevens become Captain in his first or second year with Devils? Had he worn the "C" in Washington or St. Louis?

I'd still like to see Mogilny get at least an "A", if Nieuwy did.

Nieuwendyk never got an 'A.' He wore an 'A' maybe twice.

I think John Madden would be a great choice. He's a very good leader and plays like a warrior.

why not having 3 alternates plus the captain? We had something similar in Montreal and it worked well.

I think the Devils need new blood at Captain. Stevens has been out for quite a while if he comes back and I say if he should spend his time playing his position and his health. The new game will be offense along with good defense so I think the Captain should come from the offense. Therefore Elias is my choice until Elias gets back then go with three A's. Rafalski should get a permanent A. Brylin should get a rotation A for a min of a month then if change is wanted by the players or coaches chenge to someone else and Almo for his ego should get an A until Elias is back.

While Madden is out spoken and a grit player I think he is tradeable and over paid for his job.

I would like a Captain that speak out unlike Stevens.

***.......Stevens is outspoken, and he's one of the best captains in the NHL, if he doesn't come back, then we choose a new capt. if he does, it's his C, no doubts.

C-Madden
A-Rafalski
A-Gomez (Give him more responsibilty and make him feel like a team leader).

I wouldn't do Gomez with his thoughts of leaving according to his agent his father. That's why he want and got a one year deal.

I don't mind a temporary rotation early until chemistry shakes out and an obvious unanimous leader emerges, but come playoff run time, there should be no question who is leading. I like the idea of players like Brylin, Langenbrunner, Pandolfo, and Gomez getting a month with an "A" though.

To everybody who thinks Madden is tradeable, start thinking more like Madden/Pandolfo is tradeable. I don't see it happening, but I also think Pando is expendable without Mad-Dog.

Why can't goalies be captains or alternate captains?

Unthinkable
08-19-2005, 04:45 PM
Why can't goalies be captains or alternate captains? Part of the captains job is to openly discuss and challenge good/bad calls along with opposition tendencies with the on-ice officials. Prior to this season, goaltenders weren't allowed to skate beyond the center ice line without incurring a penalty. That alone directly hinders a goaltenders ability to effectively dispute calls or point out too many men on the ice or blatant offsides infractions in real-time at the other end of the ice. Its of little use to point out completely blown calls after the fact.

Another essential duty of a captains responsibility to his team involves him acting as a mediator or go-to-guy standing between coach/management and players. He has to constantly represent both sides (coaches best on-ice assistant and extension of his gameplan and authority at one moment while being a player representative declaring the team needs to give player x a breather - he's exhausted from all this ice time the next) and be the player who smoothes over controversial decisions handed out by the coaching staff or even team doctor medical opinions when it comes to things like ice-time, roles, linemates, and injury severity or recovery time-table disclosures.

Goalies are traditionally notable for being intensely superstitious, quirky in mannerisms, and at times very standoff-ish (see Hasek's total ignoring of Curtis Joseph fiasco in Detroit). The vastly contrasting nature of the position itself (often they are singled out and perceived as either the definitive "hero" or the total "zero" at the end of the game - see Lalime/Cechmanek taking the brunt of the criticism when their teams lost) forces them to feel a little bit different from the rest of the team as well in my mind.
