Nothing said about value or length of the contract.
Classic Devil 08-17-2005, 09:30 AM Hm. So maybe Albany does have a goaltender after all.

Classic Devil, and old Alain Chevrier pics???
Jason MacIsaac 08-17-2005, 05:46 PM Good....I really didn't want to see Ahonen go to waste with some other team. He still will be a starter for the Devils in the future and Frazee will try to run him down.
Hedberg 08-17-2005, 05:51 PM So he is coming back.

My avatar? That's a 20 year old Ken Daneyko.

I'm sorry, i miskeyed. I meant, do you have any old Alain Chevrier pictures??
Since Ahonen just got re-signed, it made me think of past Devil's back-up goalies. And Chevrier came to mind!

Finski 08-18-2005, 05:47 AM Yep, Ahonen has signed a two year contract and the details are said to be around $500 000/per season. Ahonen was supposed to be playing in Finland for a year, but he decided to go and fight for a place in the team against Brodeur.

Is Brodeur a backup? :sarcasm:

Nice to see that he's coming back, and to be given a fair shot for the back up job in New Jersey. It would have been a waste to see him not get a shot here in Jersey.....

I hate to say it but Ahonen looks like a waste. Sure, Euro goalies take longer to develop. But the Devils drafted this guy what? Five years ago. And he has toiled in the minors for too long and with Brodeur not going anywhere, Ari would have to wait maybe 4-5 years probably to even start.
If Ahonen is anything at this point, he'll beat out Clemmensen for their backup job of about 5-6 starts.
To an outsider, it looks a little similar to when Mike Dunham was their backup. He never was going to start there and finally was moved. That's what looks to be happening with Ahonen.
Now Frazee...that was a solid pick. On the tape, he looked really good in one game vs Canada. Based on what I saw, I'd elevate Frazee over both Ahonen and Clemmensen.

A Turco situation could be created which would be the ideal situation.

That would be a 'best case scenario' for the Devils. By then, Ahonen would be 27 or 28.

True. But how much value does an AHL calibre goalie have at this point? That's what he is. I mean you see proven goalies like Thibault going for fourth round picks. The Devils can't trade him now unless they packaged him with a Kozlov to clear salary.
