Are there any news or rumors about signing Salei?

The Ducks are negotiating with defenseman Ruslan Salei on a multiyear deal, although the 30-year-old veteran is expected to accept his qualifying offer at nearly $1.9 million for one year, Salei's agent, Todd Diamond, said.

Salei will be an unrestricted free agent after the season, but Diamond said Salei's preference is to sign a long-term deal to stay with the team with which he has spent his eight-year career.

"They've indicated that Ruslan is part of the future of the team," Diamond said. "We've agreed to try and do something. If everything adds up, [re-signing] certainly is a priority."

Where are the Ducks getting the money to give Salei a raise? I just don't get how Burke is doing this. I thought DiPenta was supposed to replace Salei's toughness, for cheap. There is no way DiPenta would have signed with Anaheim if he didn't think he was going to make the club. DiPenta is one of Carlyle's boys, much like Sauer was to Babcock.

A raise to Salei? Ok he's reliable 4th d-man but I don't think he's worth more than his current salary.

Salei is expected to accept his qualifier probably because Burke isn't offering more than 2m per season in the long term contract, which isn't much of a raise. Thats my take anyways. Also Burke has said all along that we are not in cap trouble.

Are you sure DiPenta wasn't signed to fill out the AHL team? All we have for D there is O'Brien, Saunders, Rome.

Why would DiPenta leave Manitoba other than believing he could make the show with Carlyle as coach? He was one of the leaders on that team and a vet anchor for their defense. He wouldn't sign with the Ducks to play in Portland.

Warriner signed with Calgary for about 2.3 million a year. I think Salei will use that as a benchmark.

Yeah Carlyle will give him a look at training camp because of that loyalty, but we have 8 d-men, so maybe he will be the first call up when someone is injured...but for now there is no roster spot for him...unless Salei is traded of course, but I'm not jumping to the conclusion that Salei will be traded because of a signing like DiPenta.
