The Pirates have an interesting weekly chat with the Coach called the "Coach's Corner" (ya...go figure). Here is Dineen's first report:

A comment worth noting:

The players that really stick out in your mind are the Ryan Getzlaf's and the Corey Perry's and the Ladislav Smid's; the young kids that have not started their professional careers yet, they’re just finishing their junior career. I think that the mandates Brian Burke has brought down is that these guys are not going to work their way out of the NHL, they're going to work their way into the NHL, so I think that's good news for all of us involved with the Pirates.

That is pretty interesting and goes along with what Burke recently said on Hacksaw. He is apparently looking to sign some players to one year deals so that we can start some young guys in Portland together. He specifically mentioned Getz, Perry and Smid. I think a year in the AHL would be good for all 3 players.

I happen to think Getzlaf is ready now, the great thing about a new coach is there are no bias' so if Getzlaf performs he'll make the team.

Well with all due respect I think that Burke and Dineen know better than you.

Rushing him along is the worst thing you could possibly do.

Agreed.

I'd be fine with Popovic and Bryzgalov as our only rookies. Maybe Kunitz too.

Getzlaf, Perry and Smid playing a year in Portland would be a good thing.

looks like some d-men will have to be signed for Portland...

O'Brien-Rome
Saunders-(Rogers)
(Smid)

Brandon Rogers will probably be signed, he is done with NCAA and he was at the prospect conditioning camp. Smid of course is a possibility, Popovic is a near lock for the NHL. Jordan Smith maybe, though he has a year of juniors left. Bring over one of our Europeans like Vladimir Korsunov or Ville Mantymaa? Or sign AHL veteran d-men.

Juha Alen is going to play in Europe...and is he a UFA?...he is on this list:

There was a Knights article in todays paper which had a little bit on Perry so I thought I would stick it in this thread, he will probably be with Portland.

"The truth is I was kind of on auto-pilot after that," the Anaheim Mighty Ducks signee said.

With 10 minutes left in that nationally-televised 4-0 win, Perry turned to long-time linemate Dylan Hunter and actually asked, "What game is this?"

"It's the Memorial Cup final," Hunter responded.

"Are we winning?" Perry asked.

"Yes," Hunter replied while giving his teammate a strange look. "We are."

Perry talking about the memorial cup final and how the cheap shot was indeed a concussion from the sounds of it. Lupul, Getzlaf and Perry all have had a concussion now, not good!
