Been craving to see some televised Avs games...been so long since April... Hahahah that reminds me. Game 7 against the Wild...I was at the computer lab at school working w/ my group on a project. I tell them I'm going to the bathroom and head straight for the lounge to catch OT :) This girl wants to plug in her laptop and yanks the power to the TV in the lounge. Me and this 1 guy were all yelling "plug it back in!" It was funny when I think about it. Of course, after Brunnette's OT goal, we were all pissed. The guy threw his pen in rage and it went under the couch...that was funny too, but we were all dissapointed. Hmm..no idea why I brought that up..I just remembered it. Edit: I should say, Why Direct TV over Dish Network? I had Dish in my old house and now have Direct TV.....they are about the same. I like Dish for their easier-to-read guide and music channels. Direct TV has more pay-per-view channels and (seems to) have more sports channels. I have Center Ice and the Sports Package. Why I went to Direct TV? The dish was already attached to my new house!!!:rolly: DarioinDenver 10-02-2003, 09:42 AM gah! How do you stay married (if you are). NHL Center ice would be my downfall. Direct TV or Dish Network Lap? Edit: I should say, Why Direct TV over Dish Network? Well, I went with DirecTV for a couple of reasons. One, I needed three receivers and they were the only one of the two companies offering a three receiver deal at the time. And two, Dish was requiring people to subscribe to HBO/Cinemax along with the basic package of channels for a year or whatever and I didn't want to be forced into a premium package. I pay for one premium package a month on DirecTV and you can switch that package between the Sports , Starz, HBO, Cinemax, and the Showtime packages once a day with no fees. Don't know if Dish allows that or not, but I can watch a different package a day for the whole month for just $12. I like that immensely. And yes, you absolutely will want a dish over cable. My old cable company sucked worse than Jeff Shantz with the puck on his stick in front of the net. There is nothing I miss about cable compared to satellite. Sakic19 10-02-2003, 04:48 PM Well, I went with DirecTV for a couple of reasons. And two, Dish was requiring people to subscribe to HBO/Cinemax along with the basic package of channels for a year or whatever and I didn't want to be forced into a premium package. I went with DTV initially because of the availability of NFL Sunday Ticket. Even with that cancelled, you'd have to pry my DirecTivo from my cold lifeless hands before I went to either Dish or cable. Brigley ??? ryansiu 10-02-2003, 05:59 PM Sounds like Sauve is a bit shakey? nathan 10-02-2003, 06:00 PM Morrow scores a goal....after the whistle blows. Sauve is giving up a lot of rebounds. Stars were on PP, Sauve gave up 3 rebounds in about a 10 second span. No offense at all from the Avs. nathan 10-02-2003, 06:01 PM Score: 1-0 Stars Forsberg and Selanne were on the PK unit. Forsberg had a neutral zone takeaway and that may have led to the Avs' 2nd shot of the game. About 7 minutes left in period. nathan 10-02-2003, 06:02 PM Hinote SCORES!!!!!!! at 6:04....he does a backhand after racing into the zone. There was a questionable no-call in the neutral zone against the Avs that led to the turnover to Hinote. Seeing open ice, Hinote races down the right circle w/ 1 Stars Dman defending...he crashes the net and goes backhand Score: 1-1 ryansiu 10-02-2003, 06:03 PM oh yeah, come on AVS!! looks like Hinote is regaining his scoring touch, hehe Bender 10-02-2003, 06:04 PM Lol....2 days after I call him "hands of stone" Dan Hinote...Danny scores a beauty. nathan 10-02-2003, 06:06 PM Liles goes to the sin bin for roughing(I believe). Is playing physical. Gave up a bad turnover to Modano in the Avs zone. nathan 10-02-2003, 06:09 PM Avs are aggressive on PK. Using Forsberg-Selanne, then Kariya-Hejduk. When Avs get the puck, they aren't icing during the PK, but racing upice trying to generate shorthanded chances. nathan 10-02-2003, 06:13 PM Selanne draws a cross-check from Mietennen(sp?). Avs on PP for portion of 2nd period. Things were getting testy between Morris & Liles vs. Downey & Ott. End of the 1st period. Score 1-1. I probably won't watch the rest of the game, so hopefully someone else will cover. This is the 1st time I've ever summarized a live game so my posts were kinda messy hahah. That's why males are not multi-taskers hehehe Bender 10-02-2003, 06:17 PM Sounds like Sauve is a bit shakey? Yeah he has been shaky in the 1st....let's hope he settles down the rest of the way. McCormick has really surprised me...I didn't think he could skate that well but he certainly doesn't look out of place. The ice looks absolutely awful out there....I can't remember the last time I saw so many players hit the deck in 1 period of play. Enoch 10-02-2003, 06:51 PM Goal Nikolishin! WHOO! Enoch 10-02-2003, 08:40 PM Phillipe holy crap i was thinking of phoenix and their goalie situation.....my bad. *smacks head* kenny #9 10-02-2003, 08:52 PM I watched the whole game on FSN.. and i thought Sauve played poorly in the first, he seemed somewhat uncomfortable.. then his play picked up and played well for the second half of the game. Liles also played quite well, he did have a few giveaways but overall he played solid.. he also proved that he isnt going to get pushed around out there. Svatos and McCormick both played well, its gonna be a tough decision for the coaching staff to determine who gets demoted. I wonder if there is a possibility that both will make the team :dunno: I personally think the Avs should consider dealing Skoula. He is terrible, he had many bad giveaways and often he couldnt keep the puck in at the blueline, i also noticed that he made a few bad pinches. Sakic, Kariya and Selanne line was sure fast out there. They are gonna be a joy to watch all season. thats my 2 cents.. kenny #9 10-02-2003, 08:53 PM Final atats anyone? NHL.com has got all the stats updated on tonights game. Breeze 10-02-2003, 08:56 PM Best player for Colorado was Niko. Played a solid 2-way game. McCormick can play and will only get better. He skates well, has size, could use a 1/4 step more quickness out of a stand still, but he can play. Svatos is a talent, will definetly see more NHL shifts. Sauve was extremely shaky but positioning was very solid. He'll be fine with w/ expierence. Big Mac wasn't that bad on LW. Actually made some plays.Top 2 lines where disinterested but teased with flashes of things to come. Only cause for concern was Dowey was never properly dissuaded from his extremely aggressive play. Not sure why Mac never asked him to dance? Questions? nathan 10-02-2003, 09:06 PM Close to the end of the 3rd, Sauve pulled out a Statue of Liberty pose. You guys see that? The save was just sweetness too. He had like 3 rows of players screening the crap outta him and somehow gloves the Matvichuck(or Zubov) wrister from the point. He makes a glove save while falling backwards AND busting a SoL! All in the air too! Yayo 10-02-2003, 09:12 PM Close to the end of the 3rd, Sauve pulled out a Statue of Liberty pose. Laperriere22* 10-02-2003, 09:13 PM A few things from tonight's game I noticed. I missed a few minutes here and there; so, certain players may have been better when I wasn't watching. I did tape the game; so, I'll go back and watch it again anyway. I'll answer Dario's question about McCormick first. Downey wanted to fight McCormick in the 3rd period and McCormick declined. As both guys were heading to the bench, Downey gave McCormick a shove as he was entering the open door. No intent to injure or anything, just a little nudge to let McCormick know that Downey was still there. McCormick stops, goes back out the door and skates towards the Stars bench where Downey was now sitting. They yap at each other and the refs give Downey a crappy penalty for that little nudge. That was the whole situation. The Avs lines were: Kariya-Sakic-Selanne Tanguay-Forsberg-Hejduk McAllister-Nikolishin-Svatos Hahl-Hinote-McCormick (don't quote me on the positions on this line though) Skrastins-Foote Liles-Morris Skoula-Blake Hinote was better than I've ever seen him. Used his speed very well to get in position offensively for once and put shots on net. His goal came from a horrific no-call and Turco badly misplaying the little backhander from a poor angle. Hinote was still great tonight and I won't take that away from him. Svatos (Stars play-by-play kept calling him Savatos though) looked pretty good too. Didn't play all that physical or agitating, but made a very nice pass to Nikolishin and also a good play to intercept the attempted clear behind the net right before the pass. Nikolishin dragged down Young on the no-call that led to Hinote's goal, but was quite good as well. The Avs PK and PP were dominating; the PK was very aggressive and the Stars had trouble all night gaining the zone and setting up. I thought the Stars were much better at even strength though. Hejduk didn't really lay out Modano with a hit. Modano dumped the puck in and was a bit off balance when Hejduk gave him a slight crosscheck around the rib cage. That sends Modano sliding on his ass right into the boards. That's the problem with fast skaters; they get hurt more easily on nothing little plays like that when slower skaters like myself don't even fall over. Skoula hasn't changed whatsoever. He was so horrible that I barely have the heart to talk about him anymore (but I will muster up the effort). As usual, he looked fine rushing the puck and holding the point; he even made a nice read in the neutral zone to intercept a pass. In his own end though, he is just so hopeless. I lost count of the number of times he would just stand near the net and watch the play. Didn't take a body nor did he help out his teammates with anybody driving the net. Just stood, like a fan, watching plays happen around him. He has zero hockey sense in his own zone. I don't remember exactly what my prediction was about Skoula in the predictions thread, but I hope it was exceptionally harsh. He continues to regress defensively; he should be the one they're trying to convert into a forward, not McAllister. As someone who enjoys good defense, Skoula makes me want to vomit nowadays, much like watching Shantz offensively. Trade him to the Rangers already. Sauve was crappy handling the puck and was scrambling most of the night. He looked shaky, but he got the job done anyway. Both Stars goals came against the Liles-Morris pairing as well. The first Young goal was a tough call because Young set up above the circles for a one-timer (no man's land basically). Liles was too slow to catch up to him, but as high as Young was, I would think a forward would have been closer to Young and a forward probably should have closed Young down before Liles had to. Second Young goal was a nice pass by Boucher. Young split the defenders (went to Morris' side more though; no surprise there) and went and scored on a nice backhander. Morris got dusted by Miettinen along the boards as well; his one-on-one defense also seems about the same as last year. Liles also took a bad penalty on Morrow as well. After he got hit by Morrow in the corner, Liles took his hand off his stick and basically tackled Morrow. Didn't notice Liles all that much outside of that; nothing really negative or positive beyond the bad penalty and being paired with Morris. McCormick had a couple of real aggressive shifts and drove the net when someone else had the puck too. But, I didn't find him to be all that effective either. He's definitely a better game player than a practice player though. Svatos was clearly the better of the two in my eyes tonight. Skrastins was pretty shaky IMO too. He and Foote didn't have a lot of chemistry from what I saw and I didn't see any reason to believe Skrastins has some hidden offensive talent either. Neither of the top Avs lines were that dominating either. Tanguay played a fabulously invisible game (again). ;) The Sakic line was good, but not great throughout and the Forsberg line was hard to notice most of the night outside of the occasional shift here and there. I don't recall seeing McAllister after his fight with Erskine either, but I'm sure he was around. Don't know what happened to Forsberg either to make him leave the game. I'll check the tape in a few minutes to see; it happened about halfway through the 3rd I believe. I won't chew up the Stars that much, but rest assured they had plenty of crappy performances as well. Turco was freakin' horrible out there; if Sauve was shaky, Turco was suffering from a nervous breakdown. Just terrible. Zubov is still as smooth as you'd like though and Morrow is just fun as all hell to watch. Hard hitter (smoked Skrastins in this one) and loves to stand in front of the net and go into the corners. Ott did zero; very little agitation or hitting. Arnott had a couple of hits, but did very little. Modano and Lehtinen weren't all that impressive either. Erskine got burned a couple of times at least and the Stars are in for a rough season if Erskine makes the team and plays like that. Both teams were rather crappy in general and it certainly looked like a preseason game still. Upon1 10-02-2003, 09:14 PM Anyone that watched the game got a description of the Selanne and Kariya pp goals? I have read most of the recaps around the net and none give a description of those two goals. Any help will be more than welcome :) Super Joe Sakic 10-02-2003, 09:29 PM Anyone that watched the game got a description of the Selanne and Kariya pp goals? I have read most of the recaps around the net and none give a description of those two goals. Any help will be more than welcome :) The Kariya goal stemmed from a solid Joe Sakic pass on the PP. I believe Derek Morris shot the puck into the Stars zone on the right wing and three Avs players intercepted it in the left half boards of the stars' zone. There was a scramble between these avs players and two stars defenders. Eventually the puck squezzed out to Sakic, who stationed himself in the corner. As he was being hooked he waited for Kariya (or the high point defenseman) to scooter into the slot. Super Joe found Kariya who one timed it, glove side, on Turco. The Teemu Selanne goal resulted from some more lackluster play by the Stars defenders. Again the Avs were on the PP. Svatos was intelligent enough to wait for a stars winger and defender to come close to him before he passed the puck to Selanne in the corner. Teemu subsqeuntly stpped around the net, shot the puck, and knocked on the rebound on Turco's glove side. These goals were mediocre. I thought the Avs tried to be too fancy today. Nonetheless, it is just an exhibition game and I'm sure they just want to try some new things out with their great load of offensive weapons. The Avs appear to be very deep at the forward position this year indeed. Totally revamped in comparison to the inept forwards of last season. I have read most of the recaps around the net and none give a description of those two goals. Any help will be more than welcome :) The Kariya PP goal: Avs get the puck in along the boards; it turns into a 3v3 along on the boards. The puck comes to Sakic at the bottom of the right circle (Turco's right). He walks it towards the net while Kariya gets his stick open in the slot for a one-timer. Sakic puts the pass a little behind him and Kariya throws it along the ice and past Turco for the PP goal. The Selanne PP goal: Started because Turco tried to clear the puck himself and Selanne knocked it down. Just noticed jericholic's call of the rest of this goal and I'll leave it at that (I like my call of the Kariya goal better though :joker: ). I watched Forsberg's last shift as well and I saw nothing that would indicate an injury of any kind. If he left because of an injury, it was either very subtle or it was a slowbuilding reaction to something earlier in the game. Jori 10-02-2003, 09:36 PM I would offer some descriptions myself, but I was listening to the game more than watching it even though I had it on the TV. If you are Granato, do you make the final two cuts now or after the game on Saturday? We know one forward and one defenseman will be cut. So who makes it between Svatos or McCormick (assuming Granato doesn't cut a player such as Aubin)? I think most are in agreement that Liles should make the team over DJ Smith, so who should be the forward that is sent down? Super Joe Sakic 10-02-2003, 09:41 PM A few things from tonight's game I noticed. Some random thoughts: Lappy I found ur assessment of the game to be largely accurate. I especially like your illustration of Skoula's poor defensive play. Numerous times he stood around while a dallas forward screened sauve in front of the net. Martin has so much size that he doesn't use to his advantage. I think he's definitely trade bait this year. Hinote did use his speed effectively. Sauve badly needs to work on his stick handling. Kudos to him though for having the balls to come out of his net on a regular basis. That takes guts when you know you are a poor stick handler. The avs PP was not dominating. They did well in spurts. Yet, for the large part they did not control the puck well from what I remember. PK was very good though. I hope they can keep it up. Liles isn't strong enough to be an NHL defenseman yet, IMO. He needs to become cut like Rafalski before he can be an impact player (maybe he is, I don't really know). In general this game sucked. The Dallas announcers aren't terribly bias but they could be better. I think Colorado was lucky to pull out a win since the Stars really could have put this game away early on. I think Svatos needs the AHL seasoning more than McCormick just because of the role he'll have on the Avs and his size/past injuries. McCormick will do fine grinding it out on the 4th line, but I doubt how much impact he'll make with those minutes and it could stunt his development to saddle him with 4th line minutes for a season. It appears one of the two rookies will probably make it (maybe both), but I don't think it would really be the right choice unless it was just to give the guys a taste of the NHL and then let them go to Hershey with that burning desire to impress and force their way back up. Just my opinion. Super Joe Sakic 10-02-2003, 09:46 PM The Kariya PP goal: Avs get the puck in along the boards; it turns into a 3v3 along on the boards. Pretty much every goaltender in the Avs system is cocky. Fortunately, only one could be THAT cocky (I'm sure you know who I'm referring to ;) ) And if Sauve did what Roy did, he woulda been lynched, hung, beaten to a pulp, and THEN possibly put on waivers :joker: Oh yea, as for the actual occurance 2 seasons ago, Roy never even had possession of the puck in his glove. It was still on the ice when he raised his hand....sadly..... I have no problem believing that to be the case. I will say that the Avs' special teams are what won them the game (along with Turco looking like dung). We had a similar Vrbata vs. Svatos discussion here about a week ago (http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?threadid=13276). Basically IMO, Svatos is grittier, is more of a playmaker, and his style subjects him to a higher chance of being injured (like Hinote). Vrbata avoids the physical play, but is a much better shooter and stays fairly healthy. Played great, I have to say, i have seen very few goalies emmulate Roy as much as Sauve....same quirks, bad habits and awesome saves. Statue of Liberty brought back alot of memories of Roy....after the first period, he really settled down, and handled the Stars well.... Loved the PK, I think Nikolishin was a sleeper pick-up, he'll be very valuable.... Svatos....what else is there to say? DAMN!.... McAllister took a non-existant penalty, should have been matching minors and majors at best.... McCormick has more energy than alot of players i've seen in Avalanche jerseys as of late....can't see him getting cut....made hardly any mistakes as well.... Buuuuut....Liles did look a little out of place on the 2 goals....on the first he didn't seem commited to going down and screened Sauve low, and then waited too long to try and make a play on the 2nd goal, and ended up having to dive, although Morris wasn't much help either. All-in-all, a good game against a full Dallas team....they need to cut back about a penalty a game, and start to gel alot earlier than the 3rd period. I say they ditch Aubin to give McCormick and Svatos a taste of the regular season and if they can't handle it, THEN send them to Hershey, ala Nederost....also, with the way Nikolishin and Hahl have been playing, Aubin is about out of a job anyway.... Enoch 10-03-2003, 05:05 AM Close to the end of the 3rd, Sauve pulled out a Statue of Liberty pose. You guys see that? The save was just sweetness too. He had like 3 rows of players screening the crap outta him and somehow gloves the Matvichuck(or Zubov) wrister from the point. He makes a glove save while falling backwards AND busting a SoL! All in the air too! I heard the announcers talking about that :D Enoch 10-03-2003, 05:16 AM Aubin could be picked up off waivers, I think Granato is waiting to see what he has after the draft. We could get a defensemen like Therin and then Liles would most likely be cut. Catch my drift?? While I am not advocating picking up anyone, you never know what may happen with PL behind the wheel ;D DarioinDenver 10-03-2003, 07:27 AM Sauve badly needs to work on his stick handling. Kudos to him though for having the balls to come out of his net on a regular basis. That takes guts when you know you are a poor stick handler. Sauve is actually scouted for having good to very good ability to handle the puck. It's supposed to be one of his strengths as a goaltender, same with Budaj. Sounds like Sauve never really got comfortable from what everyone is saying however. I think the Avalanche made mistakes with their development cycle on Nederost and Skoula. I think they made the jump too quickly and it slowed their developement. While I would love to see Svatos and McCormick play in the NHL I can't help but think a season of 80 games with 15-20 minutes per at the AHL level wouldn't be better for them. Liles is a different story because he's older and I think he could make the jump and play 10-15 in a 5th/4th defenseman role. I understand some people's concern with Liles because of the game but I think you also have to consider he was being paired in a top pairing situation when in the regular season he should only get in the 3rd pairing situation for the most part. He usually won't face the Modanos, Arnotts etc..., but second tier forwards who he should be able to outskate. Av-merican 10-03-2003, 07:55 AM Hey, the Svatos-to-Nikolishin goal made the top ten list on ESPN's Sportscenter. You know you've made the team when you've made that list. Cannot wait to see this new 3rd line in action. Oh, and uh...the top two lines might be fun as well.... :D DarioinDenver 10-03-2003, 08:15 AM Can anyone tell me why Modano was named 3rd star in this game? I can see Scott Young as the second or even first star but Modano?! Zero shots on goal, +/- 0, no assists...
