It doesnt look like they are coming to Columbus this year.

I expect good things from the Crunch this season, barring injuries. Their forward corp is deeper, the D will get deeper, and Pascal will own the AHL :yo:

The CBJ signed Brathwaite to a 1 year contract so they might hand the spot to Leclaire.

Do you remember if Brathwaite was given a club option as well? I think it would've been smart for the Jackets to do so, just to make sure they had a backup at a reasonable price for 2004-05, just in case Pascal wasn't ready.
pickledcotton 08-03-2003, 08:39 AM This might be closer, since several of these guys are gone - Paroulek has been gone for quite some time.

Aaron Vickers 08-03-2003, 08:42 AM Anyone else feel a bit more comfortable with the defensemen that Syracuse will run with this year, as opposed to last season?
jackets63 08-03-2003, 09:16 PM I feel much better about the D corps. Should be interesting to see how AJ learns the defensive game though. Having Scoville for a whole year will help.
Still keeping hope alive on Nedorost, huh? And Pronger back down? I actually think that whether or not Pronger is back down will make a huge difference in how Cuse does this season.
Drat. It doesn't look they will play in Columbus this year.
Sanderson 08-06-2003, 06:27 AM Paul Manning signed a contract in Germany today.
He will play for Hamburg, where Dave King is the new head coach.
DJAnimosity 08-06-2003, 06:40 AM Sounds like one of those "just in case" contracts, kind of like the one Vyborny signed in Europe last season before he was given a contract extension by the CBJ.
These guys always like to have backup plans in case they aren't given a contract by their NHL club. I hope the Jackets plan on retaining Manning.
cool cool, I don't want him to be pressured into the job.
There's no reason for him to be. Blackburn has had it real rough, it'll do him good to be in the AHL next season.
Those forward lines would look even better with Mauldin in there :yo:

id rather see mauldin battle for the hobey next year than make the jump a year to early like jackman
crunchsite 08-07-2003, 02:48 AM Health is the key. If Scoville goes down, its over. Trent Cull was not on anyone's list, but he will be back as well. He had surgery in the off season, so hopefully will be back to the Cull of a couple seasons ago. Heffernan? I do not think he is in the mix, had a serious head injury last season and I have heard nothing about him since. Walser does not play defense, he plays wing from the blueline, so not encouraged there. Levokari and Sloan should improve, Aaron Johnson will take his lumps, but has potential. The signing of Paul Traynor, if it were to occur, would raise my comfort level considerably.
I will always contend that the Crunch defense was not that bad last season, It was a goaltending issue. Defense looked pretty good when Goehring was in net. Defense is not at fault for goals scored outsite the blue line, rebounds kicked into the slot and soft goals in general.
Anyone else feel a bit more comfortable with the defensemen that Syracuse will run with this year, as opposed to last season?
Walser does not play defense, he plays wing from the blueline, so not encouraged there. .
:joker: :D
It's funny because it's true.
About those rebounds in the slot...
In "classic" goaltending, the goalie is supposed to direct all pucks to the corners, and any goals scored from rebounds in the slot is considered the goalie's fault. However Francois Allaire (THE teacher of the Quebec butterfly) is now teaching that you are better to put your rebounds in the slot because they will be nearer to your teammates. Thus your teammates will be more likely to recover the puck and start the transition. J.F. Giguerre's play last season was an example of this. This style of rebound control requires a very different defensive system/positioning than classic rebound control, and it may be difficult for teams to adapt to it, especially if there isn't good communication between the goalie/goalie coach and the defensive/head coach.
Which is not to say that this is what Leclaire was doing. My impression is that he was trying for classic rebound control. But the technique change might be interesting, so I just thought I'd mention it.
Korkki 08-09-2003, 06:57 AM What do you think about Pauli Levokari? Is he going to get any NHL games under his belt ever?
What do you think about Pauli Levokari? Is he going to get any NHL games under his belt ever?
From what I understand from Crunch fans, he still needs help with his skating. And enough though he's a beast, he doesn't play like it. If he works on those two things, and say three defenseman on the big club are down, then he'll have his shot.
hardcorejacket29 08-18-2003, 11:42 PM are the rumors true that he skates worse than shelly did when he made his first appearances with the team? Anyone going to any crunch games in Cleveland? Tickets for those games are practically free, the barons are to cleveland what the clippers are to Columbus.
Aaron Vickers 09-05-2003, 11:37 AM Brandon Sugden was invited to the Syracuse Crunch training camp:

Another goon to the mix.
Crunchfan 09-29-2003, 08:05 AM Drat. It doesn't look they will play in Columbus this year.
Ok so I am little late with this response but......
The CrunchLumbus games went the way of the CBJ preseason game in Syracuse. I really didn't think we would get one without the other. (But I am sure Crunch fans (and the Crunchfan :-) ) will come out to Columbus for a game or two this season. AS a matter of fact I know there is a booster club trip being planned for early March.)
And for whoever said Pronger would make a difference for the Crunch this coming season was right. If he is sent back down, it will add the missing element from last season. I truly believe it was Pronger who was the glue from 2 years ago. (You could tell when he was called up that season!)
Levokari's skating is just weird. He looks like he spends the entire time on his inside edges, and his pivots are so awkward you can't believe he didn't fall on his butt. He doesn't bend his knees much so his stride length isn't very long.
laker24 09-30-2003, 02:08 PM For those who have seen any of the Crunch preseason practices and/or recent game against WBS.... What are the expectations for the Crunch this year - especially with the latest additions from Columbus? I would like to know how Nate Kiser is looking, and whether he's playing defense or wing. Also, are there any pic's available of Kiser this preseason (with Columbus or Syracuse)?

Kiser played Wing when he was at the main camp with Columbus so Id imagine that is what hes playing down in Syracuse.

jackets63 10-13-2003, 12:40 PM That looks like a sweet lineup for an AHL club. Great depth down the middle. Anyone know how the lines are shaking out?
Syracuse Crunch fan 10-14-2003, 05:04 AM So far it's been a little unsettled, we don't really have a fourth line complete (that will hopefully change by this weekend).
Hartigan and Pando have looked real good. Pando has added a ton of speed since last year. Jokila barely got any ice time on openning night, I was hoping to see him more.
My overall impression after two preseason and 1 regular season game is that we will have a lot more offense this year and much more stable defense. Those who have said our depth up the middle is improved are absolutely right. AJ and Roloff look like good additions, Andres is a better veteran than the others we've had sent down the last two years.
But, as you can see on the roster, we aren't carrying too many skaters right now. If someone gets hurt either here or at the big club, we could be in trouble. Our lack of depth may end up hurting us.
Samkow 10-15-2003, 01:21 PM Janne Jokila was assigned to Dayton.
The Wheel in the sky keeps on turning...
jackets63 10-15-2003, 04:16 PM Im sure that you are going to have a Nedorost injection as soon as some guys heal up. Unless he really picks up his game. With the lineup Syracuse is putting out, hed have no excuse for not putting up numbers. I could see Jean Luc coming down as well when everyone is healthy if he doesnt make a big impression these next few games.
RDriesen 10-17-2003, 09:23 PM crunch win second game, 3-2. aj with the game winner and an assit. jackman also had a goal and leclaire made 27 saves but gave up a weak goal. from the summary, it sounds like leclaire has a lot of work to do in the placement of pucks(rebounds)
TheJackal 10-19-2003, 04:40 AM Pascal Leclaire made 39 saves for his second win and first shutout of the season. Ryan Miller was in net for Rochester.

Looks like Leclaires finally making some progress down on the farm.
He needs to start playing like that on a daily basis, though. It's great he got his first SO, but he has to keep it up.
BTW, sounds like Johnson is playing like a stud down there. Wouldn't be surprised at all if he's the first defenseman called up.

Are you serious? Did you see his play in his own zone during camp and preseason? Awful. Amazing offensive talent, but some of the worst decisions Ive ever seen in the defensive zone. Id be more interested in seeing his play that doesnt end up on the scoresheet. Whats his +/-?
Edit: I see hes even. 3 pts in 3 games and hes even? How many of these points are on the PP?
RDriesen 10-20-2003, 11:11 AM Crunch win again. 2-1 in ot. goerhing with 30 saves(surprised they didnt let PL go again) McDonnell with both goals, Jackman with an assist, hes scored in every game

Man, Sounds like pascal is on a tear.
Did you actually see the game? If so, were the shots Leclaire let in good ones? Or were they soft goals?
The stats make it sound like Leclaire had an amazing night, but if all the shots were weak ones, and he let in some soft goals it would be decieving.

no didnt see it, just from reports i read. it sounds like the last two nights he has just been amazing, stopped a short handed breakaway that was supposedly awesome. he didnt let any goals in till the 3rd when the shots were already over 25. it didnt say whether he let easy goals in, but the fact it didnt and with the saves he has made, makes me think he didnt let easy ones in. he has the talent, we all know that, he just needs to get controlling the rebounds down, and mental part down, and i think he could be a big time goalie soon

I was simply asking if anyone had seen the game. And whether Pascal actually played as well as it seems he did. Stats can be deceiving, and since I havnt had a chance to see Leclaire, I thought I would see if any of you had.

Crunch thread...
Syracuse Crunch fan 01-05-2004, 05:37 AM I don't know how interested people are in Crunch updates, but the team had an excellent weekend, winning all three games (2 divisional).
Mark Hartigan had a huge weekend, getting 6 goals in the 2 home games, and Don Mclean had 3 as well. The entire team played well offensively, but those two stood out. Hartigan was just schooling the opposing goalies (admittedly, the Cleveland backup last night, who gave up 5 third period goals, was making his first AHL appearance, just coming up from Dayton).
My only concern after the two home games is the goaltending. Both Karl and Pascal gave up 4 goals on not that many shots. If they can get back to being strong in the net, and the offense stays this hot, the Crunch could put together a nice run.
Aaron Vickers 01-06-2004, 07:25 PM I don't know how interested people are in Crunch updates, but the team had an excellent weekend, winning all three games (2 divisional).

Aaron Vickers 01-06-2004, 08:01 PM Any idea what lines/d-pairings they're using the Cuse, when they have Hartigan in the lineup?
Samkow 01-07-2004, 02:04 PM Congrats to Aaron Johnson on being named to the Canadian AHL All Star Game today.
Hopefully the first all star game of many for him.
SwisshockeyAcademy 01-07-2004, 11:16 PM Congratulations are certainly in order.
Syracuse Crunch fan 01-08-2004, 12:11 PM Any idea what lines/d-pairings they're using the Cuse, when they have Hartigan in the lineup?
Doing this from memory, so I may have it slightly off...
It has been these pairings:
Hartigan with Motzko and (for the last few games) Limpright, but has otherwise been any number of players.
Moran with Reich and Pandolfo
McLean with Knopp and Jackman
rotating center (we only have 3) with Sloan and Sugden
The fourth line generally gets 2-3 shifts in the first, 1-2 in the second, and none in the third, so we pretty much get 3 lines. The top three lines also rotate fairly regularly as to who is first line, second line, third line, and Agnew loves to mix up lines 3-4 times per game (sometimes it will be Moran/Reich/McDonnell, then McLean/Jackman/Pandolfo, and then back to the starting pariings).
The D has been:
Cull Levokari/Walser
Scoville Traynor
Johnson Komarniski/Pushor
And of course Pascal and Karl have been essentially 50/50 in net recently.
With Hartigan gone (unless he's returned after tonights game), Reich will probably play Center, we only have two left. He's had to do that before, and takes faceoffs on some 4-on-4s.
Korkki 01-18-2004, 03:02 PM For what I've heard Pauli Levokari is heading home (very trustworthy rumor) to Pori. His NHL future seemed to be quite unsure, being assigned to AHL fulltimely so maybe he think it would be better for his career to play in Finland. It would be nice to see him back in the Spade-jersey of Ässät. He would help with the long injury list of Ässät (only 4 experienced defenders healthy).
Could anyone confirm this for 100% surely?

I can't confirm it, but Pauli has been a healthy scratch ever since Walser was sent down (which sucks since Walser is playing poorly). If I was him I wouldn't stick around to sit in the stands every night. That certainly won't help his development. If he goes I wish him well, he was starting to play alot more physically this year. He didn't add much on offense, but he was improving.
Aaron Vickers 01-24-2004, 02:58 PM Has Leclaire really looked that much better in comparison to last season, and what is it that he's doing differently?
Syracuse Crunch fan 01-24-2004, 05:56 PM Has Leclaire really looked that much better in comparison to last season, and what is it that he's doing differently?
If you had asked that question a month ago, I would have answered absolutely, he looks better. His positioning was better, he had better rebound control, and above all else, he was playing with confidence. He was holding down the number 1 spot, getting 2 out of 3 games in net (3 games in 3 or 4 nights means he has to sit the middle game).
In the last month or so, it's been a different story. Soft goals are going in again, and it looks like he's playing like he was last season. Without having spoken to him, it appears to be mental. It's not quite as bad...last year he would be strong until the first goal was let in, and then 2 or 3 more would go in very quickly. This year is a bit better, but there has been a definate slump since December.
The key with Pascal is always going to be confidence. He has the skills to be a great goalie, but he needs to be kept busy and focused. If the coaches can do that, it'll end up fine.
PerfectTommy 02-19-2004, 03:23 PM What's up with Mike Pandolfo? Has he been injured? Since it's his 2nd season with the Crunch, thought he might be making an impact by now.

He's scoring more this year than last, but he disappears for very long periods of time. He's a big kid, but seems to almost be afraid of the physical side of the game. He doesn't win anything in the corners, doesn't go to the front of the net at all, and consistently loses the puck when checked. At this point he looks like a career AHLer to me, unless he starts playing to his size. He doesn't have the skills to be a finesse player, or an edge in order to be a grinder.
To answer your second question, he has been healthy all year.

No he went back to Dayton when Brathwaite was sent down. I don't think he got a start, but I'll have to check. Where's the "crunchfan" anyway??? :)

Yes, Penner was sent down without a start. Freddy strated all three games while he was here, played great in the two home games, and awful on the road Friday. I don't expect Penner to get a start here at all this year, his stats at Dayton aren't very good, and if he isn't stopping the puck in the ECHL, I shudder to think what it would look like in the AHL.
Aaron Vickers 03-31-2004, 12:45 AM Has Johnson been returned to the Crunch yet?
I know it's in Doug's plans, but haven't been paying much attention...kind of caught up in the Hitmen series against Red Deer.

Syracuse Crunch fan 04-09-2004, 10:36 AM Mauldin signs an ATO with the Crunch and Jokila was called up. What are the Crunch's playoff lineups look like?
Pretty much the regular season lineup, depending on final word on some injuries, and Adding Fritche in:
Limpright/Hartigan/Motzko
Jackman/Maclean/Ling
Pandolfo/Moran/Reich
Sugden/Fritche/Sloan
Zeke/AJ
Scoville/Buckley
Walser/Traynor
Scratches would be Cull and I think one other forward who made it onto the clear day roster. All the recent ATOs and PTOs were mostly just to give guys a few game headstart on next year, and give some guys a rest. Like the Jackets, at least half the games this year the roster was so thin we had no scratches.
Have you heard anything on if Svitov will play or not? At first the team thought his ankle was broken, but after x-rays they found it to be bruised, and he was on the clear day roster. Also, will the goalies be platooned for the playoffs to start out, and then depending on how they do decides who plays the majority of the games? Thanks for any answers, at least someone in the organization is still playing hockey.
Aaron Vickers 04-09-2004, 12:50 PM How have the ATO's looked?
Zingoni, Goertzen and Mauldin.

I personally have heard nothing on Svitov, and he obviously hasn't played yet, or been listed as a scratch. I don't expect to see him here.
Syracuse Crunch fan 04-10-2004, 12:40 AM How have the ATO's looked?
Zingoni, Goertzen and Mauldin.
Goertzen has looked the best, doing some nice hitting and hustling.
Zingoni has played mostly on the road, we've only seen him a couple of time.
Mauldin played tonight, didn't stand out much.
Season finally is tomorrow night, and nothing is on the line, so I expect we'll see a ton of them playing. I'm making the trip to Albany tomorrow, here's hoping it is better (game and atmosphere) than Rochester was tonight.

So does this mean Leclaire has been named the clear cut starter?
Ejh18 04-17-2004, 10:19 AM Anyone else listen to the game?
During the 1st intermission they had on DM. What comes next might  you, so you are fair warned.
DM actaully stated that Walser was having a bad year but was "sent down and he had a good attitude about it and was working hard"... or something like that. It blew me away, I couldnt remember anything else Doug said.
Could do possibly not have read the article in the Syracuse papers? Does Walser actually still have a future with this team? I wouldnt think so, but then again, I never would have expected to hear this... :dunno:
RDriesen 04-17-2004, 10:32 AM he may have an immediate future with this team, but not long term. ok, kosmachev, aj, klesla are all ahead of him. if we draft a dman in the first this year, that guy moves ahead of him. now thats just young guys. that doesnt count lachance, richardson, errickson, fa, or any one else im missing
Syracuse Crunch fan 04-17-2004, 11:03 AM So does this mean Leclaire has been named the clear cut starter?
He's getting the start again tonight from what I've heard. I think for this series it's going to be Leclaire at home and Karl on the road. Pascal did not play well in Rochester.
But nothing past tonight has been announced, and if Dougie is in town for longer than the weekend, Pascal may play more often.

I don't think there is any hope of Walser ever making the Jackets again, he's too much of a liability, and AJ fills the role of offensive defenseman better. And I hope that the Crunch doesn't resign him past this year. His attitude has actually sucked. He's taking more bad/stupid penalties, getting kicked out of games, and just playing like he feels he's better than this league.
I would love to see him scratched for the playoffs, but Agnew loves him and will never do it.

Syracuse Crunch fan 04-18-2004, 01:05 PM Sorry I recommended people listen to that. Damn.
Well, after a solid game one, almost everyone looked horrible. Pascal looked the worst, the last goal he let in before being pulled was just embarassing...slow 5 hole shot, he didn't even leave his crouch.
About the only people trying were Hartigan, Fritchie, AJ and Sloan.
Here's hoping we can win our first game of the year in Rochester either Wednesday or Friday.
Syracuse Crunch fan 04-21-2004, 04:01 PM Just a reminder that game 3 is tonight, in case people want to pay attenetion. Game starts at 7.
Word is Karl is getting the start.
They need to take at least one of the next two games, a win would be the first this year in Rochester.
GMDM was not pleased at all with the performance of most of the team on Saturday, we'll see if he scared some effort into the bubble guys who are looking for contracts.
Syracuse Crunch fan 04-21-2004, 07:10 PM Interesting line up tonight.
Walser is a scratch (thank god) with an bum shoulder. Cull is a healthy scratch, and Prestin Ryan is making his pro debut.
1-0 Good Guys already though - Moran on a rebound.
RDriesen 04-21-2004, 11:36 PM Crunch win 3-2, karl with 33 saves. gotta say, i am dissapointed in leclaires developement. i know he is still young, but i figured he would take over and be the man this year. and he isnt. jackman with an assist, was even. aj with 2 assists and was a +1, and preston ryan was a +1
Syracuse Crunch fan 04-23-2004, 10:01 PM Crunch pull out another 3-2 Win to go up 3 games to 1 in the series.

The barn should be rocking on Sunday. :yo:
DJAnimosity 04-26-2004, 07:54 AM Ouch...the Crunch lose 6-0 for the second time in this series. The series now heads back to Rochester with the Crunch up 3 games to 2. I haven't been able to get to the site here until now today, so haven't been able to put my thoughts up.
The loss was truly a team effort. Defense allowing the Amerks to be in the zone for minutes at a time on the power play, Karl letting in some bizarre shots, The offense going 0-11 on power plays (I think it was 11 at least, it's too depressing to double check) including 0-2 on 5 on 3s.
Pascal evidently got hurt in warmups, so wasn't dressed. He might have seen action if he was. I'm torn, he has played poorly in their barn this year, but I think it's time to flip back to him. Especially to give him an away game to get back into the swing of things, I think the home crowd getting on him really gets to him.
Crunchfan 04-28-2004, 01:04 PM The only positives I could see in this game were that Aaron Johnson was even, and that Leclaire wasn't in goal, which would have given Crunch fans even more ammunition.
It really wasn't a positive that LeClaire wasn't in goal. Goerhing had a terrible game. (One of the goals he kicked in himself.) The rest of the team equally had a terrible game. I understand what you mean about LeClaire not being in goal though. If he was and the score was the same, a bunch of people would have (wrongly) placed the blame mainly on him instead of the whole team.
Hopefully tonight with everyone supposed to be back from injuries (Fritsche, McDonnell, Scoville, & Walser) the Crunch will be back to their winning ways.
themaninorange 05-01-2004, 11:19 PM i was at the crunch's (hideous) game 7 loss tonight and leclaire wasn't dressed, nor was sugden or reich....anyone have any idea what happened to those three?

Leclaire and Reich were injured, it wasn't announced with what. Sugden wasn't dressed since no one anticipated any fighting.
I'm still digesting the game and the result (Crunch being eliminated), I'm not happy with the loss, but the effort was there. Sometimes that's all you can ask for. And hideous would not be the word I would use, that was almost 80 minutes of great hockey tonight. The Crunch just ended up on the short end of it.
themaninorange 05-02-2004, 04:32 AM ok...hideous may not have been the right word...i was pretty upset with the defensive effort in the third period...the defensive coverage off of the rush was pretty poor i thought...also, in overtime, it seemed like no one was helping along the boards...the crunch players were getting outnumbered, weren't getting help from their teamates and therefore weren't really able to sustain a decent forecheck...on the other hand, the team showed a lot of resilience in coming back twice in the third period, goerhing played a great game, and yeah you're right, it was a damn exciting game....poor choice of words on my part, but i feel like they let an opportunity slip by them tonight....
Kinger1 05-02-2004, 01:35 PM Does the team play harder for Goering than Leclaire? It seems that there is more effort to backcheck, clear the zone, etx. when Karl is in the net. Every game I ave seen / listened to where Lecaire is playing has been more fire wagon style hockey with Leclaire getting hung. Also, Leclaire's game relies on blocking shots and letting the d-man clear the rebounds. The crunch defense don't seem very suited to that style. Opinions from folks who have seen more of the goaltender dynamic than I have would be appreciated.
themaninorange 05-02-2004, 02:17 PM i'm not sure how much of a difference there is, if any, between how the team plays for goering as opposed to leclaire. in all honesty i only made it to about 5 or 6 games this year and only saw goering in about 2 of those. obviously, there is a pretty big difference between the style that goering and leclaire play...goering is so small that he has to be in proper position all the time or else he will just get smoked...leclaire relies alot more on his reflexes and doesn't seem to care all that much about his positioning since he's quick enough to stop the puck even when he's out of position 9 out of 10 times...in terms of the team around them, i don't see much difference....the crunch have struck me as a weird team defensively this year...at times they seem adequate and at other times they seem completely lost (a la the 3rd period last night)...
on another goalie note...is this kid penner who dressed last night expected to do anything? i know goering is a free agent at the end of the year and i was wondering if the organization was planning on keeping him around, or if they'd let him walk and let penner come up to back up leclaire?
I think they'll keep Goehring around, if only for depth purposes. Let's say they let Goehring go and Pennar backs up the The Grinch in the AHL, who will be our Dayton goalies? We have NO one else in the system (that happens when a team only drafts one goalie in their four years). Will they just go out and sign two random bums to play goal for the Bombers? This situation may get worse when/if Brathwaite doesn't get signed. Who backs up Denis? Will MacLean sign another aging backup or will he go out and get a younger backup that will push Denis?
Edit: I forgot that we drafted Bendera, but that kid will never amount to anything with his p!$$ poor attitude, so I didn't count him.

I have a feeling CBJ will draft at least one goalie this year, in the mid round area. It's been pretty much said that Karl will not really get a shot at the big club (he almost wasn't signed for this year). With only Denis and Leclaire as goalies who are felt to be NHL-caliber, the system is real thin. I'm not sure if Karl will be back, I think he had a one-year deal. We could see a new NHL backup, a new AHL backup, and a first year pro in Dayton next year to play with Penner.
I agree, one of the third round picks HAS to be a goalie. And peeking over at the Prospects Board, the general word is that this draft is very deep in goalies, we could get a real steal in the third round if we pick the right guy.

I have to think that Columbus will select two goalies in this draft. MacLean has said they'll take the BPA, that that is their strategy, however, looking at how thin the organization is, and the fact that we've only taken one goalie since Leclaire (Penner), we're due to add some depth to that position. Even MacLean has to realize this, and he's a huge advocate for BPA.
Aaron Vickers 08-15-2004, 04:44 PM I'm surprised no one has made mention of this, but there's a tournament held between a Team USA split-squad, Finland and Sweden.
It gives each country a chance to scout their own players, and the opposition, well in advance of the tournament.
Columbus had three representatives; Adam Pineault, Danny Fritsche and Arsi Piispanen. All three finished with three points in four games. Pineault finished up with three goals, Piispanen with three assists, and Fritsche with a goal, two assists, and a shootout goal.

Lafontaine2Mogilny 09-02-2004, 10:09 PM Pineault played on a line with S. Bernier and S. Goulet tonight...They got off to an awesome start.
Showed some fiestyness and willingness to muck it up...had good chemistry with Bernier and chipped in with a fine play at the end of the game(2mins left) to tie the game up.
Cool, thanks for the update. Do you know if Picard was in the lineup tonight for Lewiston?
Mods: With the lockout all but assured, I propose a sticky thread on the forum that has updates on our youngsters. All we have till they start playing NHL again is keeping up to date on Nash, Zherdev, Fritsche, Picard, Pineault, Pohl, etc. are doing, and having one big update thread should cut back on the amount of threads on the board.
Lafontaine2Mogilny 09-02-2004, 10:16 PM Yeah, Picard was in tonight...Got a breakaway goal off a giveaway...
Seems to be only interested in the offensive zone...floats through the neutral zone looking to be sprung on a break...
On the other hand he had some good hits in the corners and worked hard for the puck...didn't know he was that aggressive. S. Bernier actually looks faster this year! Kept up with Picard skating for a loose puck from Lewiston Blueline till Wildcat Hash marks.

All we have till they start playing NHL again is keeping up to date on Nash, Zherdev, Fritsche, Picard, Pineault, Pohl, etc. are doing, and having one big update thread should cut back on the amount of threads on the board.
We already have one.
Its called the "Blue Jackets prospect Talk Thread" Its sorta the Syracuse Thread (which should come back later this month) with a diferent name to include all prospects....

I meant a new thread of the 04-05 season. I know I don't want to go thru 126 posts from last year to get to the new info.

I really don't mind threads about individuals on the board so long as there aren't a bunch of friends of cousins of the players and lazy fantasy people wanting us to do their research for them...
On second thought, never mind. I second the suggestion.
ttnorm 09-05-2004, 10:56 PM Columbus was rated #6 overall thin the 2004 draft review from younggunshockey.com (subscrpition). The following is the section related to this draft:6. Columbus Blue Jackets: The Blue Jackets walked into Carolina with 12 picks and they put them to good use. Their first three selections were in our top 51. Their first 10 selections were all in our top 281. Columbus traded their #4 overall pick to Carolina and still wound up getting the guy they wanted when they selected (LW) Alexandre Picard at #8. Columbus seemed to be following our draft guide pretty closely with their first three selections. At #8 they took Picard who we had ranked at 9. At #46 they selected wildcard (RW) Adam Pinault who we had at 44. And at #59 they took our 51st ranked prospect (D) Kyle Wharton. Other picks we really liked were defensive project Rob Page at #167 (YG ranking-137) and hit machine, (F) Lennart Petrell at #190 (YG-172).
I'm really liking what I'm reading about Petrell. Sounds like he's a more offensivly gifted pest, moreso than Jarkko Ruutu and Ville Neminen (sp?). Hopefully we can get rid of Wright within two years and bring this kid over.

Home Opener

Final Score: 5-2 (Moncton)
Pineault:
2 goals (1 on PP), +1, 7 PIMs, won 16 of 22 faceoffs, named "first star"
WOW, WOW and freakin WOW!!
This was my first time seeing Adam play and he didn't disappoint. He's awesome with the puck, great wheels, willing to mix it up along the boards and an amazing shot!
He centered the first line. His two goals were scored on wrist shots from the faceoff circles on either side, he just simply blew it by the goalie up high.
Great with the puck, good passer!
Now the best part! Adam had already taken a minor for roughing behind the net. (he doesn't back down). Later in the game he was pushing with someone behind the net. Adam took one step back and dropped the gloves, removed the helmet, adjusted the elbow pads and skated out in front of the net. When the hooked up it was just punch after punch, both guys going toe to toe. I'd call it a draw but man did ever endear him self to the Cats faithfull. Note: both players were also given 10 min misconducts for removing their helmets.
After trying to get Adam to come here for about two years 4400+ are sure glad he did! :handclap:
I know it was only one game and the above are just my views but if you'd like more reaction check out the Wildcats board and/or the QMJHL board.
Sounds like Adam had a good game :) Wouldn't he have 17 PIMs instead of 7? Hopefully he keeps this up.

impressive. He's playing on a line with Steve Bernier and I'm not so sure what's
up with this guy though.2 years ago he scored over 100pts as a 17 year old
and only 80some last year.He didn't impress that much yesterday. So we will see

FearTheFlyers 09-25-2004, 10:43 PM Owen Sound's home opener tonight and Dan LaCosta picked up his 2nd win in 2 games with a solid perfrmance. The 1st goal he let in was a softie and I think he thought, as did all his teammates, that a penalty had been called, and let a weak shot get by him. However he made some great saves including 3 breakaways. He will be a key part of the Attack this year and looked great in preseason, he has good reflexes and is great with his pads. His blocker side needs some work and he lets in the occasional softie. He makes some astonishing saves though.
Thanks for the update on Lacosta. After Leclaire, we ain't got nothing, so hopefully he'll pan out. After seeing a few rookie camps, the Jackets seem to focus on a goalie's weakness and work on that the whole time. So, whenever Lacosta comes in next for rookie camp, he'll get worked over his blocker side.
Feel free to come by and update us on his progress whenever you want. We got nothing else to do around here ;)

Well your goalie coach(Wamsley) has signed with Owen Sound to help dan during the lockout, so they see something in him.
bizoncol 09-26-2004, 11:14 PM I saw Petr Pohl scored 3 times in last 2 games and was named among 3 stars of the games. Maybe one day we'll see a P-line combined totally from this year draft: Picard-Pineault-Pohl?

He's not old enough to play in the AHL (except after Junior playoffs are done come Spring). So he can't. It's either Juniors or Europe for him, and from what most people are saying it will be Juniors.

KallioWeHardlyKnewYe 09-29-2004, 12:14 PM CBJ fell from 8th to 12th in the prospect organizational rankings, according to HF's new list.
I was surprised by the slip. I figured since they didn't "lose" any guys off of last year's list and added a lot of talent in the last draft that the team would hold around 8. Guess not.
I thought the write-up made a fair point about several "project" players in the system.
No big deal. The rankings don't mean too much to me, just interesting reading.

Surprising to me that they didn't even mention AJ :dunno:
DougKnowsBest 09-29-2004, 08:28 PM We got dropped because Aaron V isnt on "our side" making arguements for cbj players anymore IMO.
The criticism of our project players is a joke. PLease, someone explain to me if late round draft picks are not good places to get project players than who are we supposed to be drafting. Anyone drafted outside of the first day is a project player period.
They say we have no top prospect on the blue line...Because they completly forgot AJ. They dig us for lack of depth yet they leave of their list players such as Jackman, Sergi Mozyakin, wharton, and OK.
And then to top it off they leave Z in the prospect category. I would say when the season starts Z will be with the big club. If he is allowed to leave Russia.
KallioWeHardlyKnewYe 09-30-2004, 09:33 AM I think the games played limit for prospects is at 65 games. Z played around 50 or so last year. Hey, I'll still take him on the list, makes it look better.
I was reading the prospect board postings on these lists. Someone said they think teams from about 8-18 or so all are pretty even. I'd agree with that. If another person or group made a list, the CBJ easily could be pushing the outside of the top 5.

I attended this game. It was a very boring game, not much action. Pineault didn't really stand out, but then again NO ONE stood out...except Martin Houle (Eagles goalie-drafted by the FLYERS :yo: )
Also of interest Adam plays the point on the PP.

X0ssbar 10-04-2004, 08:04 PM Saw this post off another thread and though I'd relay it over here:
Hey All, i just went to my first Moncton Wildcats game yesterday (MON 1 - Cape Breton 0), i do stats sometimes for the coach (shots, offsides/2 line passes, etc) and my friend works as an assistant trainer for the team. (That's how i got the job) Here's my thoughts on certain drafted NHL players.
By the way, i'm not a scout, just some of my opinions:
Steve Bernier (SJ) --- He was FLYING, big time. He was easily the most noticeable player on the ice. He was fast, creative, intense, and threw a lot of big body checks. He will 100% play in the NHL i think. Twice as fast as last year. He reported to the team in great shape.
Adam Pineault (CLB) --- Easily should have been taken in the 1st round. He is competitive and i think he already has an NHL caliber slap shot. First shot he took, my jaw dropped. It was a cannon. He's a big boy too, not easily pushed off the puck. One shot, Houle gloved it, but before that it was heading for as top corner as you can get. Impressive save, but he's a scoring threat at all times.

Sorry boys, I can't help but laugh here.
Not only was I on the organizational committee, but I wrote up the Columbus section, which should come as no surprise, really.
You definitely cannot say that Aaron Johnson was left out of consideration on this list. Not only is he clearly among the top four in the organization, but our top blueliner as well. Aaron Johnson is not a top prospect in terms of defensemen, and definitely wouldn't crack my top ten list of prospect defensemen. He is, however, an excellent prospect, and a great one for this organization to have. He has flown under the radar, even after his AHL All-Star appearance.
In terms of project selections, Adam Pineault is a fine example of a project, and he was taken in the second round. A lot of our 'higher potential' players, such as him and Piispanen simply are hit and miss players. Plehanov is another. Mozyakin, although the leading scorer in goals per game in the RSL last year, is another project for Columbus, due to his size. Certainly they may have been late round selections in the case of Mozyakin, and to an extent Piispanen, but they are key guys to this organization, and the prospect pool will look really thin should they not pan out, which is definitely something that could happen.
Zherdev was reclaimed into the prospect pool when we most recently revamped our prospect criteria. He should certainly be there, but he is deathly close to graduation, and certainly would have this season, had there been a season. He's likely to be on the list next time the organizational group gets together to re-evaluate team rankings.

I attended this game. Moncton ran into a hot goalie...plain & simple. Final shots were 41-22 for Moncton. The third goal was an empty net. Pineault played well. He appears to have lost that "I'm Adam Pineault from the USA, I was drafted into the NHL, now give me the puck". Just my opinion. He's definitly fitting in better.

That's how I see him developing too, but I reckon he'd be the best hitter of the bunch, perhaps someone like Darcy Tucker defensively and Jarkko Ruutu offensively with the occasional flash of somethign far smarter in his offensive game.
At times he makes great clever moves to get past someone but then find himself in a position from which he can't shoot, but for someone just drafted I'd rather consider that as raw ability that needs to be harnessed properly by his coaches.. If you can do something like that, it's always going to be a plus, you just need to learn how to utilise it so that it's of some benefit..

ZombieMatt 10-21-2004, 11:44 PM In Adam Pineault, I think you guys may have the best player for his draft position in the entire draft. Pineault has been phenomenal all season long and has really simply stepped up his game and showed he deserved to be a first round pick. I guarantee you had he played like this last year (had he been in the Q last season) he would not have fallen beyound 30 overall.
He is playing with Bernier, which some will say is juicing his stats, but I strongly disagree. Bernier is a great player, no doubt, but Pineault holds his own and creates just as many chances as Bernier does. For a centreman, Pineault has really a sick one-timer, and has been used ont he point on some powerplays during the season thus far.
I won't get into complete details, but if I were a Jackets fan, I'd be very pleased with Pineault's selection, I truly believe he was a steal.

Haven't seen his games, but he keeps playing games more and more..
Raimo, what's the word on Piispanen? I see him picking up the odd assist here and there. I'm assuming he's playing on a lower line for this team. Has he added any weight, shown flashes of a future NHLer?
Odd that Picard was ice cold for four games and yet he still has more points than Pineault. Picard seems to like the rough stuff also, good for him and us since the team is stacked with finesse guys and not players that will drive the net and go to the corners.
RDriesen 10-22-2004, 08:32 PM just couldnt find the back of the net early. had the shots. pineault seems really consistent. never a huge night, but always getting a pt or 2. with pineault, picard, nash, zherdev, fritsche and svitov, i love the looks of our forwards. just need to get a few stud dmen now. if we dont get crosby, i wouldnt mind jack johnson :)
RDriesen 10-22-2004, 08:35 PM Lewiston has exploded, up 7-2 already.
picard with 2g, 1a, 3pts, 2pim, +2 so far
make that 3g, 1a, 4pts, 4pim, +2 so far
make that 4g, 1a, 5pts, 4pim, +2 so far
racking up the pp goals
Picard ends up number 1 star
mcarrick16 10-22-2004, 09:56 PM not bad in 13games: 10 goals 10 assists for 20 points for a guy that didn't have a goal in the first 6 games
RDriesen 10-22-2004, 09:59 PM yea, hes doing already. i honestly think he would have played for cbus this year. the scouts just loved him. which is why we took him over guys WE :) wanted them to take
RDriesen 10-22-2004, 11:09 PM Pineault number 1 star as he nets game winner in ot. moncton won 3-2 in ot. pineault finished with 1g, 0a, 1pt, 2pim, +1, 5-9 on faceoffs
Aaron Vickers 10-23-2004, 12:09 AM yea, hes doing already. i honestly think he would have played for cbus this year. the scouts just loved him. which is why we took him over guys WE :) wanted them to take
I think everyone here sort of forgot that he was the #3 ranked NA prospect in the draft as well...
Everyone has their streaks.
bizoncol 10-23-2004, 03:24 PM Pohl was #1 star of the game and scored 2 goals in 3:2 win over Shawinigan. Total he has as good stats as Pineault - 15 games, 16 points (10+6).
But most amazing stats among CSJ prospect in GMJHL has Philippe Dupuis. Last night he had 2 assist in 3:2 win over Victoriaville. He has played only 10 games and has 18(6+12) points. He's 3rd overall in points-per-game in QMJHL.
RDriesen 10-23-2004, 03:42 PM those two have nowhere near the talent of or size of pineault and picard, though it is nice they are playing well
IAMCANADIAN 10-24-2004, 10:24 AM 10/23/04

Yeah, I agree - Jack Johnson would be a nice pick for us if we can't land Crosby or Brule.
bizoncol 10-24-2004, 11:31 PM those two have nowhere near the talent of or size of pineault and picard, though it is nice they are playing well
Pohl could become the next Datsyuk (low round pick), while Picard can be the next Tyler Wright (1st round). Easyly. You never know.
I forgot. Tonight Pohl added 2 assists. And he had no points in first 3 or 4 games at all. So he had slow start, but with every game is getting better.

He's still a Jackets prospect! He was selected higher than Arsi Piispanen, Datsyuk, Satan or Demitra, he's just 1 year older than Pineault and has a break-out season. Play-offs MVP Brad Richards was 3rd round selection and he was playing in the QMJHL too. His faceoffs stats are just amazing.

your right, but ill bet my money picard and pineault play more in the nhl and are better than pohl and dupuis. they have more skill and size. now does that always translate into the better nhl'r, of course not, but at this time, i have to go with the guys drafted higher and who are bigger and more skilled. till the coaches say otherwise or i see all players play

Hmm, Piispanen 0+3=3 -8 PIM:0
In the few JYP games I've seen, I havent really noticed him stand out, been admiring Jarkko Immonen too much? Maybe,..
he switched to JYP to get more ice-time, has played all their games but I have no idea if that's been on 3rd or 2nd or what line. Padawan from the Finnish board would be a better person to inquire about his progress.
I recall looking at him and reckoning him to be big enough for SM-Liiga, ie he didn't look too young/small anymore, but otherwise he didn't stand out in the games I saw (and I admit, I wasn't looking *for* him, so that says very little)..
I'd judge him better as the season progresses, let's have him get his first goal of the season and see how he plays from then on.

I didn't attend this game, but I believe Adam has been moved to the wing. He no longer plays on a line with Steve Bernier. I believe he plays second line now...not a demotion, but it allows Moncton to have more of a balanced offensive attack.

RDriesen 10-30-2004, 01:48 AM lewiston won tonight 5-2. picard named first star, 1 goal, 3 assists, 4 pts, +4. now has 11g, 13a for 24pts in 16g

I attended this game. Adam is now playing on the second line (on LW I believe). He still plays on the PP and he was reunited with Bernier for a few shifts during the game. Aside from a couple good scoring chances, I found Adam to be invisible out there tonight. He also doesn't back down physically.
I wouldn't read too much into Adam being moved to the second line. It was done to spread out the scoring. Last night his line mates were Ryan Salvis (undrafted) & Bruce Graham (2nd round NYR last year). I think Adam will soon get to play with Martin Karsums (2nd round Bos last year) when he returns from injury.
RDriesen 10-30-2004, 10:07 AM its still stupid for the kid. and the team. you dont mess with what works. and as far as him, he was playing center. if you want to move him to second line center, fine. but you dont move him to a wing. he was playing really well at center and ever since he moved to wing he hasnt done anything. just dumb for the development of the kid
RDriesen 10-31-2004, 04:15 PM moncton won 9-5 today. pineault with a goal and assist

I think it's safe to assume that Adam played center today going by the number of faceoffs he took. I couldn't attend this game (Halloween & Child) but maybe someone (RDriesen) could tell us if Adam did in fact play center...also if he was moved back upto the first line again. If you look at the Cats first goal..Marchand from Bernier & Pineault..you'd think they (Bernier & Pineault) were reunited.

I was at the game and Pineault was back to centring Bernier. That said, the lines were all screwed up in general. I have to admit I'm shocked the team scored 9 against Rimouski.
Bernier/Pineault played the game mostly with two different players while at full strength. 40% of the time with Goulet (their typical linemate), 40% with Brad Marchard (Eligible for 2006). They also took a few shifts with Wesley Welcher and Jerome Samson, both eligible for 2005,but not likely to be picked.
Marchand is a small guy with some pretty good moves. He had an extremely good game yesterday.
Back to Pineault. The entire Wildcats typical formula was sort of thrown out the door yesterday. Not having Karsums to play with Graham screws things up, and Luke Pelham (overager) also not playing for whatever reason, did not help matters either.
I wouldn't be too concerned about Pineault. He has clearly demonstrated all sesaon that he was a tremendous steal to be outside the first round. He is clearly one of the top 30 players from the draft, and maybe even pushing the top 20. His prior problems aside, he has stepped up and been, in my opinion, one of the most pleasant surprises of the 2004-05 season for all the 2004 draft picks.

yep, according to the last poster they were. i just think, even though you want to win, juniors is to develop players. and pineault was clearly developing as a center. something the cbj could also use. i just dont like when you mess with kids who are having success is all
RDriesen 11-02-2004, 08:33 PM looks like he is back on the wing. geez, can this coach make up his mind. not wise imo to be moving young kids around like this. he has 1 goal so far as moncton leads 4-1

The guy might not be a scorer but he is as smooth and Bouwmeester on his skates and no one in the OHL has ever got by him and He's the best d-man i've seen in the OHL this year.
jacketracket 11-11-2004, 05:26 PM Adam Pineault really getting some mention here at HF, as one of the 2004 draft steals.

I remember this guy being projected as a mid-first rounder by the draft gurus here at HF, early in the year, so I liked the pick when he dropped to the second.
I'm liking it even more now.

MephistoIV 11-11-2004, 07:32 PM Wow, im very impressed with the draft so far,
Picard is tearing it up, ditto Pineault.
wharton and lacosta look solid as well.
The comments about Methot are nice :).
KallioWeHardlyKnewYe 11-12-2004, 08:27 AM The first part of HF's top 50 prospects is up. Prospects 50-26.
I know this ranking means nothing (just something for us HFers to argue about) and I don't want to seem like a rabble rouser, but I read through part one and I think the Jackets are really going to get shafted in these rankings this year.
There are no Jackets in the first part. Zherdev is a lock to be in the top 10 (probably top 5), but I can't see Picard or Leclaire (the Jackets other two best hopes, in my opinion) cracking the top 25 given who is listed in the bottom 25.
I'm probably jumping the gun, but we'll see....
I don't think Zherdev counts in this year's rankings. If that's the case, we got nobody. Oh well.
KallioWeHardlyKnewYe 11-12-2004, 11:29 AM I don't think Zherdev counts in this year's rankings. If that's the case, we got nobody. Oh well.
I think he does. He's less than 10 games away from being a prospect by HF standards, but I'm pretty sure he's still there.
Personally, I'd consider him graduated, but you have to have some standard and he still doesn't meet it.
But, like you said, oh well...
RDriesen 11-12-2004, 01:21 PM actually, seeing some of the guys from picards draft that are in the top 50, i would have to include him. they may not, but i would. he is leading, or was, the chl in goals scored

They said this year's performance isn't being taken into account. I'm with you -- I think Picard should be on the list. He still might be.
But, I'd just be surprised if he is. The first part of the list includes guys like Ladd, Schwartz, Thelen, Tukonen and Schremp -- all pretty much guys that people here had above Picard in the past. I wouldn't expect that to change now, especially if they aren't taking this season into account.

Pineault is/was playing "RW" on the Cats second line. On the left side is Ryan Salvis & at center is Bruce Graham (NYR 2nd round 2004). After a slow start in they're starting to click as a line. Adam still teams up with Bernier on the PP from time to time and he also plays on the PK.

I especially like his 5th goal video, nice one-timer from the point topshelf.
Hendrikx has been great this year. On a D with 5 NHL drafted defencemen (Flood, Vainio, Dawson, Hendrikx, Young), he has stood out as the best. I think he's a guy who could play in the AHL as early as next season. His first couple years he served the role as the Petes enforcer, while making a lot of mistakes on the back end. This year he hasn't been fighting nearly as much (and to be honest, he wasn't that great to begin with) but he's improved his game immensely. He still makes some bad decisions in his own end with the puck but he makes some really nice passes and as you can see from those videos, he has a nice shot from the point. Right now he's sitting at 8 goals. All but one of these goals came with the Petes having the man advantage (6 PP goals, as well as one with the extra attacker).

I attended this game and Adam continues to play very well. On aside note, Im glad I picked Danny Fritsche in my Fantasy Hockey pool...if Danny is your top prospect (better or equal to Pineault) I'm a very happy man. If you have any questions on the game or on Adams play don't hesitate to ask.

RDriesen 11-21-2004, 06:30 PM been a little busy :) pineault with a goal and an assist today. pushing his totals to 15g and 14a in 26 games. what i love about our top 2 picks from last year are there overall games. or what seems to be overall games. they both have about the same amount of assists as goals, so they arent purely goal scorers or set up men. they both seem to be big guys who can skate and like to use there body. i cant wait to see hockey :) but to see them with the cbj

RDriesen 11-22-2004, 12:48 AM heres the OHL. must say im disspointed in the progress of lacosta and wharton. though lacostas stats have improved some over the season. its tough to tell anything on stats, but just going by that, they are dissapointing to me.
Kyle Wharton (Oshawa) - 19gp, 1g, 9a, 10pts, 15pim, -3
Trever Hendrikx (Peterborough) - 26gp, 8g, 9a, 17pts, 40pim, -3
Marc Methot (London) - 23gp, 4g, 3a, 7pts, 32pim, +16
Dan Fritsche (Sarnia) - N/A
Daneil Lacosta (Owen Sound) - 11w, 7l, 2t, 2.99gaa, .899sv%
Remember that Wharton got his arm broken by that punk Neil in the offseason, I'd give him at least half a season before passing any judgement on him.

did not know that
IIRC, it was an informal scrimmage. Chris Neil, who plays for the Sens, broke Whatron's arm with a "playful" slash after he thought Wharton did something to him.
