This may be a very stupid question, but I have a friend in Moscow who is going to tape an RSL game for me, but she said that in North America they use a different system (pal?) and that I might not be able to view the VHS tape. Does anyone know if I can watch a game taped off a Russian tv (satilite) on a North American vcr?

If I am not mistaken in North America NTSC system is used and in Russia is SECAM (regular tv) and sometimes PAL (on satellite). So yes if your VCR doesn't support PAL you probably won't be able to watch it. So make sure that your VCR supports PAL.
The difference between PAL and NTSC is that in NTCS 30 frames per second are used but in PAL it is 25 frames/sec.
But of course it is possible to convert from 1 system to another one.

Thanks. I'm still confused somewhat. I think think that I could still view the game, but it was be distorted. I don't know if my vcr supports PAL, but I have to check somewhere on there it should say I hope.

PAL VCRs with converters are pretty expensive - 350+USD, I would say you have a regular vcr. May not really be worth it.

I know there are video places who will convert videos from one to the other fairly cheap, so it's probably worth looking around if it won't play.
NTSC is the standard in North America, PAL is European.

We use NTSC, they use PAL. However, many shops will convert a video for under $20.00. If you're in Toronto, there are several. PM me if you need more info.

In Montreal you can get it fixed for 3$ or 4$/hour about everywhere...
I had the same problem when my friend sent me russian cartoons, cost me 14$ to get it fixed.
If you're still interested, send me a private message and i'll give you the shops adress. I assume ur from Montreal.. :)
Does anybody know if RTR is broadcasting hockey? it's the only russian tv I found on the net. If you know any other links to a free online TV please tell me..
