georgiabluejacket 09-27-2003, 01:19 PM I was surfing the net(obviously since I'm here) and I started to ponder the whole Cujo thing. So I guess I'll just throw out my thinking. When Cujo is availiable in the waiver draft we take him, then we turn around and trade him to(to Colorado or Boston for example).
Now I know some are saying "If Detroit can't trade him, what makes you think we can?" The answer to this is the fact that everybodies getting a laugh out of free spending Detroit stuck with an 8 mil. dollar contract.
There's really not a whole lot of players on Col. or Bostons's rosters that I would want on the Jackets(that they would trade for him, not all together) but we could trade for draft picks. That way we can build a really strong "base" for our franchise. This also would serve the purpose of screwing our rivals(which I'm always for) especially if we traded him to Colorado.
Anywho, that's my random thinking so thrash away at your own free will.
We can't take Cujo in the waiver draft, he plays within our own division. See us having to trade Biron to get Tenkrat last season.

I did not know that. Interesting

Yep, sucks a fat one. Could have been any easy way for us to get some picks. Also, Pens and Canes would be ahead of us in the order, I believe.
That's why we took Biron from Tampa last year and traded him to Florida for Tenkrat, who they took from Nashville.
Samkow 09-27-2003, 04:04 PM Even if we could, would it be worth the possibility of the team backing out of the trade and us being stuck with Cujo.

During the season, some team (Avs, Boston, Philly, among others) will have injuries, get bad goaltending, etc., and they would want a proven vet in the net.
Aaron Vickers 09-27-2003, 06:49 PM If any team that is looking to deal Cujo would pick up a bit of that salary, I could see a half-dozen teams being interested.
It's not that Cujo isn't good. It's because of his salary that he's a problem.

I've seen you proclaim this in other threads, and while it's close to the actual rule, it's not entirely right.
You can't select a player from a team in our division IN THE FIRST ROUND of the waiver draft. After everybody has made their choices, you can go back in the next round and pick up a player from your own division. The rules are here:

Crunchfan 09-29-2003, 08:44 AM Is there also something about if you pick up a player in the waiver draft you have to unprotect another one? I can't find the page I have saved with the complete rules (it's on another computer) but I am wondering if it is a position thing too. IF you pick up a goalie, you need to unprotect another goal?
DJAnimosity 09-29-2003, 08:47 AM CF--
That rule was in the link I posted:
3. No club may lose more than three players in the Waiver Draft, unless it chooses to offer more players. Each club's three-player loss limit will increase by the number of draft claims it makes against other clubs.
Crunchfan 09-29-2003, 10:26 AM [QUOTE=DJAnimosity]CF--
Right but I what I was alluding to was not only can a team lose another player but I thought there was something about having to unprotect another one because the newly picked player takes the place of one of the protected players. Teams have more than 3 players unprotected.
I found the part I am talking about.
"13.26. When a Club claims a player or goalkeeper under this
drafting procedure, that Club shall immediately place the claimed
player on its Protected List and shall announce the name of a
player, or, in case a goalkeeper is claimed, a goalkeeper, whose
name shall be removed from its Protected List, thereby reducing
said list to eighteen (18) skaters and two (2) goalkeepers."
So if CBJ were to pick Cujo (even though they can't because of the division rule) they would have to unprotect Denis or Braithwaite (who I am guessing would be the protected goalies since LeClaire is still exempt and Goerhing is not generally considered NHL material.)
Picking a goalie on the waiver draft with the idea of trading him is very risky.
