Getzlaf on Ducks this season?

He has a good shot of making the team. Its going to come down between him and Lupul for a spot and he may have earned it last night.

now that are nice "problems" .....having to top-talented guys fighting for one roster spot.... can´t remember the last time the ducks had this situation....

The Ducks should send Smirnov to Cincy and let Getzlaf play 10 games.

Can anyone remember few years ago when the youngsters trying to make the team were Marha, Banham and Crowley? Can't say I miss those days...

There is, but the assumption is that Severson, Burnett, and Johnson have the other spots sewn up.
I don't think Getzlaf is going to join the team no matter how well he does.

There is a real trade-off IMO. Do the Ducks sign Getzlaf and give him at least 10 games of NHL experience? This could really help his Junior career and put him on the fast track to the NHL. Or should they wait and slide him into the new CBA next season? Honestly, I would just give him a contract. Its not like he's going to get the model contract being teh 19th overall pick. He'll get some bonus money but it won't be crazy.

Plus he can't be worse than Smirnov! Smirnov has shown me nothing this training camp/preseason. Getzlaf has the desire and the potential. Send Smirnov to Cincy!

Well I saw my first game life last night and hands down I don't care how old Getzlaf is or what his current contract status is - this guy belongs on the team. He was just awsome together with Nieds and Prospal. He adds another dimension to the Ducks team. Tall, gritty, good positioning and soft hands. but then again it was one game only (that I saw).

Vish and Ward were scary bad - plus they played toghether and must have been a combined -6 last night.
Smirnov is bound for Cincy. I kind a like Holmqvist - he is not your typical soft Euro and plays with an edge and uses his body - he will probably take Chouinard spot - he is definately an upgrade over him but roster spots are in short supply this year.

I watched Friday's game as well. Getzlaf really, really impressed me. It seems as though he's got great chemistry with Rob and Vinny. They set themselves up well. I used to be a Lupul fanatic, but after seeing Getzlaf... Wow!

I know the CBA is looming around next year and all, which could decide Getzlaf fate by default, but i'm hoping the org will reward Getzlaf's effort like they reward Cam Severson at the end of the year. BTW, Ryan scored another goal vs the Sharks.

a side tidbit: i think it was in the third period when i saw Ozo, Petr, Feds and Chistov all go below the blue line on the offense and had tick-tack passing to a tee between all four players! too bad they couldn't score on that opportunity, but the passing was amazing! they're like this already????!!!!! = )

I think Getzlaf would make the team and probably play some of the games in the early season... i think he is good enough and has proven a lot..

ya, but do you think it will be good for Getzlaf to get 4th line minutes? or if sticks on the big club, do you think they'll leave him on the Prospal, Neids line?

Heck! If you can put Prospal, Neids, and Sykie together, they'd look real dangerous.

A first-round selection by the Mighty Ducks in this year's entry draft, Getzlaf's performance has been enough for Ducks general manager Bryan Murray to make preliminary contact with Getzlaf's agent, Steve Kotlowitz, about the possibility of signing Getzlaf to an NHL contract.
"He's looked good in camp," Murray said Wednesday. "We want to be fair and give this guy some consideration. We thought he was a real good player, but he's certainly more ready than we anticipated."

Send him to Juniors...or give him the 10 game trial period I rather have him be a top end player the next 10-15 years then jepordize it now...besides we have enough quality centers on the team I say we sign him to an AHL deal...the compitition in the AHL is a step higher then Juniors and if an injury occurs he can be called up...good problem to have.

You can't assign a North American junior aged player to the AHL. And, if he impresses in the 10 game trial period, which we have to sign him for anyway, he'll likely stay on the team.

Signing Getzlaf and sending him to the AHL is not an available option. Either the Ducks sign him and keep him with the parent club, sign him and send him back to Juniors immediately or sign him and let him play a maximum of 10 games in the NHL---at which time he would have to be returned to Juniors.

From a financial point it would make no sense - from a player personal standpoint it would make no sense (we are much deeper this year than any previous season)....but then again PK leaving to Colorado made no sense neither and it still happend.
At this point he has impressed me more than Lupul and/or Smirnov - who cares whether he is 18, 19 or 20. More power to Ryan if he can make the jump right away. worst case he gets send back to the juniors but frankly if the ducks sign him I doubt that will happen.

thank you for clearing that up for me.i say give him the 10 games and send him back unless he is REALLY good.

I would send him back to his junior them, even if he plays 10 great games. It's one thing to play 10-15 good games and another one to show up each of the 82 games of the regular season. If he gets hurt and the call-up plays strong and he isn't able to force his way back into the lineup, he will sit around all season.

I'd go the safe way and return him to juniors. One more year there won't hurt him...
