Crossroads* 05-03-2005, 10:01 AM 2-1 USA or 2-1 Latvia, it could go either way.
Rabid Ranger 05-03-2005, 10:02 AM I think the U.S. will have learned some things from Canada's game against Latvia. I look for a 5-2 victory for the U.S.
ALF AmericanLionsFan 05-03-2005, 11:38 AM I'll say 4 -2 victory USA
Captain Leaf 05-03-2005, 12:41 PM If the US doesnt win by 6 i will be shocked .I know my fellow Canadians think lowly of this US team but i think you guys are Gold medal contenders along with Russia .
nyrmessier011 05-03-2005, 01:46 PM yea let's win today boys, set up a 2-0 showdown with Canada on Thurs....USA!!!!!!!
Boucicaut 05-03-2005, 02:19 PM 6-3 USA sounds more realistic but I'm hoping for a surprise from Latvia, so 3-2 Latvia.
Thornton97 05-03-2005, 02:22 PM US will score a last minute touchdown instead of going for the gametying field goal; US: 17 Latvia: 13.
Nah, I like 4-1 US.
eSabre 05-03-2005, 02:30 PM 5-1 US.
It'll be closer than the score says.
William H Bonney 05-03-2005, 03:33 PM online radio feed?
SergeiK 05-03-2005, 03:43 PM 0-1 Sprukts on PP.
This has been Latvia`s game so far. Ty Conklin has made couple of key saves while Irbe has had nothing to do.
missK 05-03-2005, 03:43 PM online radio feed?
None available, only Mediazone (http://www.mediazone.com/channel/hockey/jsp/fullschedule.jsp#), online pay-per-view.
Levitate 05-03-2005, 03:44 PM weak
conklin got a delay of game penalty :shakehead
SergeiK 05-03-2005, 03:50 PM First period is over. It`s still 0-1.
Very entertaining game I would say.
starsgal09 05-03-2005, 03:50 PM Did he shoot the puck over the glass or what?
Robertsson 4-ever 05-03-2005, 03:51 PM Yan Stastny is a surprise for me. Haven't seen him play before, but he looks really good. He is making some shifty moves, and is where things are happening on the ice.
And some nice puckhandling skills by Weight in the last shift, to bad none of the passes came through.
Latvia played well in the first, and deserve the lead.
SergeiK 05-03-2005, 03:52 PM Did he shoot the puck over the glass or what?yes.
Levitate 05-03-2005, 03:52 PM not sure, probably...i just hate it when goalies get that penalty, and I believe it resulted in the goal against as well
wilka91* 05-03-2005, 03:55 PM Go Latvia! :yo:
Vikke 05-03-2005, 03:55 PM Go Latvia! :yo:
I agree!
SergeiK 05-03-2005, 03:57 PM Latvians are not well known their ability to keep the lead. So believe this game will turn to Yankies.
Riddarn 05-03-2005, 03:57 PM I agree!
Me too! :)
SergeiK 05-03-2005, 04:09 PM Ref just dissallowed a Latvian goal, because player was on the crease.
We're supposed to be getting this game on tsn here but right now it's liverpool versus Chelsea in English premier football, nothing wrong with that normally but i'd rather watch the hockey game.Apparently we will only get this game tonight on tape delay.Better late then never i guess.
X0ssbar 05-03-2005, 04:13 PM Conklin with a break-away save. Latvia takes an interference penatly. US now on PP.
US is getting their butts handed to them right now.
Boucicaut 05-03-2005, 04:21 PM Sounds like a great game...too bad I can't watch it. Go Latvia Go!
sk84fun_dc 05-03-2005, 04:22 PM I expected this game to be a battle. Latvia never gave up against Canada and they play as a team - some solid players, too. Irbe plays with a ton of pride, too. Hopefully, USA pulls it out.
FYI, IIHF Yan Stastny article (http://www.ihwc.net/english/article/qa/index.ihwc?&artId=2017)
X0ssbar 05-03-2005, 04:31 PM FINALLY!
Doug Weight from Eric Cole. Score 1:1
Robertsson 4-ever 05-03-2005, 04:31 PM Doug Weight with a beauty to make it 1-1.
Engineer 05-03-2005, 04:32 PM Great goal by Weight, redirect into the top far corner on a jumping pass from Cole, after some Weight moves at center ice. Goal scorers goal from a passer.

That's not Premiership - That's Champions League!!!
That is a much anticipated game, I tell ya. Imagine Rangers Vs. Devils in the Conference Final, game 7. (ok, maybe a bit of a leap of imagination. I mean... the Rangers?)

Well,i'm not too up on my football.Usually all i watch is the world cup.I should watch more, especially with the lock-out.
Great goal by Weight, redirect into the top far corner on a jumping pass from Cole, after some Weight moves at center ice. Goal scorers goal from a passer.
Weight's their leading guy....i've said it before and i'll say it again.
Oil_slick9416* 05-03-2005, 05:04 PM keep the updates coming
X0ssbar 05-03-2005, 05:09 PM Mark Parrish from Doug Weight on the PP. 2:1 US
Gee.......Weight again in on it.What a f'in shocker!!!
X0ssbar 05-03-2005, 05:10 PM Modano on his way to the locker room with what appears to be a upper arm injury. He took a cross check from a Latvia player which drew the aforementioned PP.
Pepper 05-03-2005, 05:11 PM Very weak call against Latvia, that was a crosscheck maybe in women's junior hockey but not at WC tournament.
Two very iffy calls against Latvia in 2nd period, first ref blew whistle way too early and disallowed the Latvian goal which went in fractions later, then a clear goal was missed because because the ref didn't go upstairs to check it.
The refereeing is brutal.
X0ssbar 05-03-2005, 05:12 PM The refereeing is brutal.
...so are these announcers..good god they're annoying..
Sounds like the Latvians are giving the U.S all they can handle, they've even had two goals dissalowed. They are usually very competitive.
X0ssbar 05-03-2005, 05:22 PM The ice has definitely tilted in the US's favor in the 3rd. Irbe has come up big. Just stopped a two on one.
Hats off to the Latvians though - they are a very fast team that take full advantage of the larger ice surface. One break and they are right back in this baby.

This is extremely annoying. A hockey nation like the US should not get that kind of help from the refs.
Edit: who are the refs?
SergeiK 05-03-2005, 05:26 PM 2 mins
Ref is Schindler (CZE) I believe.
X0ssbar 05-03-2005, 05:29 PM 20 seconds to go. Time-out Latvia. Face off in the US zone.
2 mins
Ref is Schindler (CZE) I believe.
thx man.....tense moments coming up.
nyrmessier011 05-03-2005, 05:30 PM Final 3-1
From what I saw (17 mins on in 2nd per) US toyed with them. Any details on the first half of the game? Was it the same
X0ssbar 05-03-2005, 05:31 PM Parrish with an empty netter.
US wins 3:1 :handclap:
Unbelievable game by the Latvians - they could have easily stole this game if it weren't for Conklin.

Is the same problems that riefe major football tournaments rising in hockey as well? These so called "big nations" (I count Finland one of those) do not reserve this kind of help from referees. I´m still pretty worried - is this intentional?

Hockey is not fair sport. Not tonight at least.

conkin is the us goalie ;)
Boucicaut 05-03-2005, 05:35 PM I didn't see the game, but based on the comments here, it all leaves a bad taste...come on, two disallowed goals. Jumalauta!
Edit: I hope Latvia's coach logs a complaint against the reffing. This Schindler character has had sub-par performances before too, but this time it seems a bit too much to stomach.

What does "Jumalauta!" means? My granny often says that to me :dunno:
reaper 05-03-2005, 05:40 PM Don't know what Sindler is doing in the world championships. His standard is not even close to SEL standard. Seen him destroy games before, get rid of him I say.

It's a bad word basically :) It doesn't sound like much If I translate it, but it really is a pretty powerfull word in the Finnish language.
So you have Finnish background. You must feel a bit uncomfortable watching tomorrow's game then ;)

Haha, well no. Since most of my friends are Finns I have to cheer for Sweden so thats no problem :snide:
We like to trashtalk alot every year when Finland faces Sweden :biglaugh:
I was hoping for Finland to win World Cup though after I got so dissapointed by Sweden.

:) I actually met some Swedes just before the World Cup final started at the ACC, and they all hoped for Finland to win it. I'm sure though, that they had bought the tickets thinking they'll see Sweden play Canada or the US. Those were my predictions also.
I think your team has the edge this time. Team Finland has not been very convincing yet IMO, whereas team Sweden has geled nicely.
RedLightDistrict 05-03-2005, 06:38 PM If anyone has any photo links to the game, I'd appreciate that very much. Particuarly of Irbe and Conklin
wilka91* 05-03-2005, 06:57 PM it's weird but on a Russian forum, there are 171 replies in the LAT-USA gamethread whereas there are only Russians there. the Americans don't seem to care, neither do the Canadians and all the other Swedes and Russians and Finns and Czechs and ... from here don't seem to care either
reaper 05-03-2005, 06:59 PM Well, USA vs Latvia is not very exciting game, will probably be more replies as tournament progresses.
ALF AmericanLionsFan 05-03-2005, 06:59 PM Game made me nervous as I checked it from work. I knew this would be a tough game after having such an easy time with Slovenia. I give Latvia props for playing so tough.

maybe they're not much for forums in canada/america :dunno:
even though its a fact that americans don't care much for hockey...
here in Sweden people are starting to lose interest for hockey too. Everybody are talking about soccer nowadays :shakehead

Not so sure its for lack of caring, but the time difference doesn't allow for them to be near a t.v. or compute to follow the games. Everyone is at work or school.

Nah, nevermind, I'm an American, I'm far to lazy.
And what are you folks doing on this hock-key board anyhoo? There's more important things going on like the Kentucky Derby and Poker. Sheesh.
No, like was mentioned, US/Latvia isn't, how do we say it, "exciting." I would suspect Thursday will be better and if the U.S. is put into a position of medaling, it will be much better. Heck, I might even get excited.
Go USA

I agree with you except with have no t.v. or radio of these games :madfire: Although today I couldn't follow with the computer because I had to teach a class during the time of the game. Should have made them due a report on the World Championships...Maybe Thurs. when we play Canada!!!!!!!! ;)

Thats a shame. Its sounds wierd that not one single TV-station has bought rights to show the worlds
Poker is not even fun to watch anymore..does poker really get high ratings over there?
SChan* 05-03-2005, 07:42 PM i feel bad for the americans that need to watch that poker crap instead of hockey.

It's a huge craze around here that boomed when ESPN put it on primetime and a few networks have their own shows.
I don't think anyone picked up the worlds because well it's really a secondary tournament when the playoffs are going on. I'm not really surprised no one has picked it up. NBA playoffs and MLB season in full swing has the sports channels locked up during the week.

Rabid Ranger 05-03-2005, 08:03 PM Full props to Latvia. Great effort from them, but also a decent game from the U.S. Outshot the Latvians by a two-to-one margin and received some quality goaltending from Ty Conklin. The game against Canada will be pretty interesting.
wilka91* 05-03-2005, 08:15 PM USA must beat Canada!
CDeeps 05-03-2005, 08:28 PM I read Mike Modano left the ice with a shoulder injury. Does anybody know anything about this? I'm actually surprised Mike hasn't recorded a point yet. So far Weight has been the difference maker on offense, displaying puck moving skills and setting up Mark Parrish for 3 goals in two games.
s7ark 05-03-2005, 08:30 PM USA must beat Canada!
Unless the Canadian defense starts to pick up their game that could very well happen. Weight and Modano always seems to pick up their game against Canada

Modano was out for a bit. He returned to the ice later in the game. Probably just a stinger or something no too serious.

ALF AmericanLionsFan 05-03-2005, 10:53 PM I'm wondering who is going to be starting in the nets for USA? Conklin or Dipietro?
CDeeps 05-03-2005, 10:56 PM I'm with you on that Wilka. If Canada's defensive core keeps playing like they have then we've got this game wrapped up!
Well how has our defense been playing? I haven't been able to see any of the games so I don't know. I do know Canada's blueline has been less than spectacular, only because I've read so much about it on tsn.ca, SlamSports, the Globe and Mail, etc. True, Canada has won two games, but Jovo, Philips, Regher, and Souray have been sloppy. Can somebody tell me how well Team USA's defense has been performing and if anyone has stood out in particular? I know Roach and Gill are both +4, but that number has certainly been inflated by the 7-0 romp over Slovenia.
Steveorama 05-03-2005, 11:49 PM The American Defense is the best in the tournament (statistically-wise), we'll see how it performs against the vaunted Canadians
Hmmm...both teams have played Latvia and Slovenia.
US has given up 33 shots, Canada has given up 37 shots.
Are American fans really hanging their hats on "superior defense".
We'll see on Thursday, I suppose...
Streaker-man 05-04-2005, 12:25 AM Oh man... Gotta praise Latvia now. They were awesome! I just loved the way they played. Great fans! Best in the whole world right now, no doubt.
Too bad the ref denied those 2 goals. The first was actually quite a clear call but the 2nd he should have checked out.
Go Latvia!
Raimo Sillanpää 05-04-2005, 03:36 AM What does "Jumalauta!" means? My granny often says that to me :dunno:
It's an abrreviation of two words originally.
Jumala - god
auta - help
so literally its supposed to mean "god help me" , but erh.. in reality, the abbreviated word means more like "god curse it" - except with the curse being a similar word starting with the letter d.
and take out the spaces.
Raimo Sillanpää 05-04-2005, 03:38 AM great game, latvians unfortunate not to win it.
usa turned it on at about the halfway mark and deserved the win on that dominance they showed then. Weight in particular seemed to be an immovable force in front of the net. His line was always always dangerous. Modano looked like he hasnt found his groove yet.
that stastny kid, looked completely useless.
early on I thocuht that Conklin was having a stinker, at least the first part of the game he was in dire straights - but at the end he pulled it together and became unbeatable.
jekoh 05-04-2005, 06:13 AM this article says he will be available for the game against Canada. No, from what I understand, you can only add players once the first round is completed. That also explains why Obšut didn't play in Slovakia's second game.
stv11 05-04-2005, 07:15 AM That would be true if the US had a full 23 men roster. However, there are only 22 players on team USA's roster, so they can add a 23rd at any time.
psycho_dad 05-04-2005, 08:00 AM I wonder why Gill did not play PK when Latvia scored. There is no way in hell that Latvian guy would have gotten even close to the puck if Hal had been there. He is great on PK and especially in keeping the front of the net clear from opponents.
Great game by Latvia..that one goal should have been checked from videoref. It looked like it was in.

it's the religious, blasphemous thing i think. they used to (and probably still do, i just haven't heard it lately) bleep out the "god" part but leave in the "dammit" on radio and tv

We'll see on Thursday, I suppose...
since I haven't seen any of the games i can't say anything definitively, but there is the whole "quality of shots" angle to look at things with. if canada is only allowing 18-19 shots per game but giving up really good scoring chances when they do allow a shot, that's not really good defense. if the US is allowing approx the same or less and is limiting the good scoring chances, that is good defense.
but since I haven't seen the games, I don't know. just pointing out there is more to it than shot totals

The U.S. defense was running around alot in much of the first and second periods, but put the clamps down in the 3rd. The play of Ty Conklin didn't hurt either, as he had to make a few difficult stops. The U.S. will have to play much better from the start of the game to beat Canada.
USA must beat Canada!
Don't worry about that game, your team has enough problems of it's own to contend with.Like getting out of eighth place or whatever you finished last year.
