Prediction: 5-3
Oil_slick9416* 05-02-2005, 11:13 PM They will be pumped up !
both teams will. canada's D has to prove themselves elite and slovenia is prolly hoping for a decent score line.
should be a decent enough game.
hopefully nash will have another steller game.
ALF AmericanLionsFan 05-02-2005, 11:16 PM 8 - 0 Canada
Rabid Ranger 05-02-2005, 11:18 PM I would think Canada would beat Slovenia by at least as much as the U.S. did. I say 9-1 Canada with Kopitar getting a power play goal..... ;)
Habsfan 32 05-02-2005, 11:21 PM I say Canada wins 8-1.
Goals by:Nash(2),Thornton,Gagne,Souray,Doan,Marleau,Drap er.
Slovenian goal is by Kopitar.
JonathanTwinkleToews 05-02-2005, 11:55 PM 4-3 Slovenia win. :p:

That would be embarrassing........

Macman 05-03-2005, 12:42 AM 10-0 Canada. Nash four goals.
Edler Statesman* 05-03-2005, 01:02 AM After the Latvian 4 goals allowed, Canada will play a more disciplined game (defensively) and not try for the porous offense
5-0 Canada, goals by Boyle, Thornton (2), Doan, Draper

I just hope that Slovenians don't run up the score. Brodeur might break into a roid rage and that wouldn't be good for anyone.
(And I'm fully aware that Brodeur probably never took steroids, but it's my divine right as an American citizen to be an arrogant ***** and I'm going to take full advantage of that thanks.)
5-2 Slovenia.

Bubba64 05-03-2005, 04:40 AM Who will start? Brodeur or Luongo ???
I'm thinking this one could hit double figures. As sorry as I feel for Slovenia I just think they are gonna get hammered. Of course anything can happen in this sport and canada could have a bad game and Slovenia play well above themselves, but I just cant see that.
wilka91* 05-03-2005, 06:28 AM Slovenia will surprise everybody ... and Brodeur will be very shaky (because of secret steroid use).
Slovania 4-3 Canada

Might be a good day to sign up for that Score With Vtech contest, Nash might pot five and make someone a millionaire.
FiNsKa 05-03-2005, 09:19 AM This will be nothing short of a total embarrasment for Slovenia. If the score is under double digits, it's because Canada wanted to spare the Slovenians from total and complete humiliation.

psycho_dad 05-03-2005, 09:38 AM If there is any doubt in Team Canada, Brodeur will not play today. If Brodeur is not in the lineup, things are looking bad for him. If Canada played him in this game too, and his test came back positive...they would probably lose the points from this game also.
Canada will win 9-0

You mean there is actual doubt about the outcome of the test? I thought it was just a routine test and Brodeur was chosen by Lady Luck.

Yeah it was a routine test, but Brodeurs excuses before the results are in says something. We'll see, but this looks like Martti Vainio's janitor once again...

Yep, I found the thread about this. Sounds bad, but here's to hoping that it's a false alarm. Hockey does not need any more bad publicity.

Yeah, the Swedish commentators thought someone threw his camera onto the ice. That'd be a stupid move, considering the value of that camera. :D

s7ark 05-03-2005, 12:25 PM Dear Lord has Jovo ever been brutal today. I really hope he can shake off the rust quickly cause he is a huge liability out there right now.
EDIT: Hannan has looked great though
Levitate 05-03-2005, 12:26 PM is the canadian defense looking bad or what?
i'd worry about that if it doesn't change...against the better teams that'll be huge if they don't step up
Everest 05-03-2005, 12:26 PM Yes Jovo and Regher are soft...Regher just dumped the puck over the glass...as if he were killing off a T-Bay 5 on 3!
Jovonoski was the worst Canadian D-man on the Olympic and World Cup squads during the games and so far has been again in these World Championships. How long before another young Canadian D-man replaces him on these international teams. It almost seems like he can't play at the level. Get him out.
Everest 05-03-2005, 12:28 PM Hannan finally gets a penalty...his stick is still in the NHL "butcher mode"

Looking really bad. In fact outside of Hannan and Redden, all our defensemen have been pretty poor.
But yeah Jovo and Regher are very dangerous out there for Canada right now.
EDIT: Maybe they should split up the pairs and go with Hannan/Jovo and then Redden/Regher. Maybe that would help them find their game?

All-Star 05-03-2005, 12:40 PM How good/bad has Souray looked so far? Is he getting any icetime?
Souray, along with the rest of the Canadian D, doesn't look prime. They are playing fairly well down low, banging bodies and all, but the puck handling and passing doesn't seem to be there for any of them.
Captain Leaf 05-03-2005, 12:44 PM Phaneuf would be an improvement over half of Canadas D.Canada looks much better BUT it is Slovenia ..the Pembroke Lumber Kings would beat these guys by 4 or 5 goals .

waffledave 05-03-2005, 12:49 PM Hannan is pretty much the only D-man playing well.
What about that Slovanian goalie? Poor guy must have lost 10 pounds so far.
Everest 05-03-2005, 12:49 PM Heater continues to play for passing instead of shooting...end of 2.
One d-man who has not been bad...Dan Boyle...at least he is timing his offensive jumps...Jovo is so random and erratic...the forwards really don't know where/when or how with him...its pure chaos whenever he's on the ice...little wonder he's with Regher

By the end of Salt Lake he was one of our best defensemen and the coaches knew it,that's why his shifts went way up the last few games. As for the world cup, well,he got injured in the first game, pretty hard to show what he can do when that happens. He can play and be an impact player at any level,he's rusty here so far,if he can get his rythm going he'll be one of our best d-men.

Agree totally.
He has been frightening in his own zone. Not to make excuses for Jovo, but the ice is crap in that arena...not exactly condusive to Jovanovski's speed skating game. But the poor play has more to do with the layoff, IMO.
He'll get better as the tourney progresses, and he is the type of game-breaker from the back-end we may need in later games. The team is not exactly packed with skilled offensive dmen. And attacking with speed from the back end is going to be needed to beat trapping teams.
waffledave 05-03-2005, 01:21 PM BTW, Morrisson scored again, 7-0.

I find he gets roasted on hfboards a lot and i can't figure out why.I know Jo-Vo can be risky at times and some games he makes himself look bad out there but really those games are few and far between during the course of a season he's involved in from start to finish. When on he's on he's one of the top defensemen in the league,at least top 20 and for stretches of time top ten.Hockey officials know it too....that's why he keeps getting picked for these teams,Tambellini and those guys are'nt stupid, think hitchcock would want a guy on the team that can't play defense and adds nothing? Regehr get's lot's of love on hf boards (i hardly ever see anyone say a bad thing about him and i like him too) but he has'nt been any better then JO-Vo at this tournament either so far.Jovanovski is skating fine for a guy who has'nt played a lick all year..ya have to think once he get's in the right mental groove he'll really help.I'm not sure if there is time but he's got the ability. No doubt about that. So far he's been real rusty but that's what it is...rust.If he can get his "a" game back in time he'll help...a lot.
IceDragoon 05-03-2005, 01:27 PM Captain Canada makes it 8-0.

Rick Middleton 05-03-2005, 01:38 PM I find he gets roasted on hfboards a lot and i can't figure out why.I know Jo-Vo can be risky at times and some games he makes himself look bad out there but really those games are few and far between during the course of a season he's involved in from start to finish.
When he's good, he's great.
When he's bad, he's terrible.
The one knock on Jovo's game is his inconsitency. You never know which Jovo will show up.
wilka91* 05-03-2005, 01:39 PM oh come on Slovenia, I know you can score!
Everest 05-03-2005, 01:41 PM The Golden Child of Slovenia was excellent. He nearly scored in the final minute, sailing a 40 foot slapshot over the short side...just missed. I can't believe he is that strong/confidant at such a young age. He looked like a guy who could score 40/50 goals in the CHL next season...if somebody ever pulled him across the pond.
loadie 05-03-2005, 01:44 PM Was Souray playing today?
Steveorama 05-03-2005, 01:46 PM Slovenia only had 12 shots in the game. I don't think they had a shot on goal after midway through the second period...am I right about that?
Everest 05-03-2005, 01:51 PM Yes,Ithinkso..but they did have a few good chances in the game...prbably had a better game than they did vs the USA...despite the score.
rival 05-03-2005, 01:52 PM By the end of Salt Lake he was one of our best defensemen and the coaches knew it,that's why his shifts went way up the last few games. As for the world cup, well,he got injured in the first game, pretty hard to show what he can do when that happens.
Glad someone else said this before I had the chance too. In Salt Lake he was awesome.
I think so far Jovo is skating and passing well but the decision making is not there. The good thing about this tournament is the long round robin/qualifying whatever it's called portion that gives the guys who haven't played in a while a chance to get their game up to speed. If this was another short tournament I'd ask Jovo to focus on shutting down oppositions top lines because he is a monster when put in that role. If guys like Boyle and Redden are producing I might ask him to do that anyways.
Kopitar matched up far better physically than I could have ever imagined. He can skate, shoot, comes back to his own end and for the most part makes great decisions. Very, very impressed by him (even in a blowout).
I never realized what a great skater Hannan is when he gets going at top speed.
wassup77 05-03-2005, 01:53 PM Was Souray playing today?
yes, and he played terrible...well, not really but he seems really slow on the skates.

Anze Kopitar today signed a 1-year contract with Södertälje SK of the SEL, he spent his last season in Södertäljes junior team.
Everest 05-03-2005, 02:02 PM Lets hope that the game vs USA will bring out more intensity in our defencemen...I think they have not felt challenged so far. The relaxed pace lends itself to falling asleep/or getting too fancy. Overall, this defence core is best suited for physical play/along the wall. Again...Dan Boyle has been very good...he should be helpful in an offensive role...and a few others need to reign in thier chaotic play...and let the forwards carry the puck/start the offence.

They mentioned during the game that he planned to play a year in the SEL then come to North America to play junior.

He wasn't any worse than the rest of the D-corps.
This is off topic, but what is the addresse of the official website of the tounament?

I agree...all Ds sucked donkey dick.
NeoCanuck 05-03-2005, 03:07 PM Wheres the love for Brendan Morrison?
Crossbar 05-03-2005, 03:56 PM Looks like Luongo can stay mentally sharp with 20 or fewer shots through out the course of a game. ;) Bravo on keeping Canada's GA column low by completing the shutout and bravo Team Canada for adding 8 more in the GF column. :handclap:
Oil_slick9416* 05-03-2005, 04:13 PM wasn't a pretty game, and it was very boring to watch. the D wasn't that great again....they need to improve an fast with a big game coming up in 2 days. once again the forwards played great especially maltby and draper. they owned the boards down low and when was added to that line it was almost unstopable.i think it was the 7th goal, when morrison scored...for some reason i find that that goal so funny, it was almost like he didn't want to score. the goalie was down and out. the puck was just lying there morrison took and kind of made a move then tapped it in, i dont think he'll ever score an easier goal.
that being said the slovenian goalie played extremely well today. as gord and Pmac said it could have easily been a 15 goal game. he made some great saves today.
Steveorama 05-03-2005, 04:14 PM "bravo Team Canada for adding 8 more in the GF column."
Good point. If we end up tying the Yanks on Thursday, that 8th goal might be huge (i.e. 1st versus 2nd place). Of course, it depends on how the US fares versus Latvia today...
Vic Rattlehead 05-03-2005, 05:48 PM Wow, wish I could have saw the game, especi***y since Thornton had four points. Damn school!

since it went 3-1 it means that the eight goal wasn't needed to win +/- over USA.

That's the second place on these boards I've seen "all" censored in one of your posts. Da hell? :)
ALF AmericanLionsFan 05-03-2005, 07:03 PM 8 - 0 Canada
Look at that ;)
ALF AmericanLionsFan 05-03-2005, 07:04 PM Slovenian goalie must have whiplash by now. :amazed:
wassup77 05-03-2005, 07:04 PM Look at that ;)
nice one :yo:
ALF AmericanLionsFan 05-03-2005, 07:16 PM Thank you thank you :snide:
rulin 05-03-2005, 08:22 PM Due to school, I wasn't able to watch the game (but I guess I didn't miss much). But after reading these comments, I'm very interested in seeing how Canada's D will hold up against Team USA. They will be Canada's first true test, no offense to Latvia and Slovenia, and from what I have seen and heard, I don't know if the D will be able to handle it...

INNSBRUCK, Austria (CP) - A report card look at Canada after Tuesday's 8-0 win over Slovenia at the IIHF world championship:
Forwards
Rick Nash, A: Can you spell M-V-P? Another awesome display of his talent. Scored once and had seven shots on goal. Joe Thornton, A: Playing like a No. 1 offensive centre, dangerous on every shift. Scored twice.
Brendan Morrison, A: The only player on his line going on all cylinders right now. Scored second and third goals of the tournament.
Simon Gagne, B-plus: Quietly doing all the dirty work on the No. 1 line. Had goal and assist and plus-3 rating.
Kirk Maltby, B-plus: Flying out there and put up goal and assist even though that's not his job.
Kris Draper, B: Not his kind of game but nifty setup on Maltby's goal.
Ryan Smyth, B: Nice wraparound goal after demotion to checking line.
Mike Fisher, B: Created numerous scoring chances for himself but couldn't finish.
Patrick Marleau, B-minus: No points and wasn't on the ice for any of the eight goals but he played a good defensive game in limited action on fourth line.
Shane Doan, C: Struggling to find his offensive game.
Brenden Morrow, C: One shot and no points, but in limited ice time on fourth line.
Scott Walker, C: No shots and no points, again in limited ice time on fourth line.
Dany Heatley, C: Last year's M-V-P has yet to demonstrate any of that kind of game. Time to get it going.

God Bless Canada 05-03-2005, 11:26 PM Honestly, this game means nothing. Just like the Latvia game meant nothing. Just like Thursday's game vs. the U.S. will mean nothing. We win the pool? So what. Due to the fact we have to have 16 teams (at least four have no business being there), and two round robins, the first round robin means nothing for strong teams. Wake me when the next round robin starts, and we don't play joke teams against Slovenia, whose best player ever is 17.

So why are YOU posting here now? Why not wait until next week when the games "mean something"? Just curious.
Mysterion 05-04-2005, 12:56 AM Oops missed the defencemen part.
Dany Heatley, C: Last year's M-V-P has yet to demonstrate any of that kind of game. Time to get it going.

Defence
Wade Redden, A: Very active in both zones with precise passes and good anticipation. Two assists and plus-3 rating.
Sheldon Souray, B-plus: Looked more comfortable in his second-ever world championship game, used his heavy shot from the point - leading team with eight shots on goal - and played a physical game.
Chris Phillips, B-plus: Jumped into the play and looked more confident than first game.
Ed Jovanovski, B: Seemed to be keeping himself for the U.S.
Scott Hannan, B: Ditto.
Dan Boyle, B-minus: Only one shot on goal from offensive blue-liner.
Robyn Regehr, C: Physical in his own zone but didn't record a single shot in a game where Canada had 56.
-
Goal
Roberto Luongo, B-plus: Faced only 12 shots but made a sensational glove save in the first period.
Jorge Garcia 05-04-2005, 02:32 AM About time somebody noticed that Redden has been Canada's best D-man by far. And don't worry about how the D will hold up against the Americans. They'll be fine. It's Hal Gill and his little American friends who are in for a bad night.
Mysterion 05-04-2005, 03:14 AM The press in europe have noticed too
INNSBRUCK, Austria (CP) - The Canadian Press's three stars of Canada's 8-0 win over Slovenia at the IIHF world hockey championship Tuesday:
First star: Joe Thornton, Canada. Boston Bruins centre set the tone with early goal. Had four points.
Second star: Brendan Morrison, Canada. Vancouver Canucks forward was flying en route to two-goal effort.
Third star: Wade Redden, Canada. Ottawa Senators defenceman had dominating performance at both ends, recording two assists and plus-3 rating
ClericMercenaryAgent 05-04-2005, 03:37 AM I like how Regehr got a C because he didn't take a shot on net. Isn't playing solid-ish in your own zone better then goofing up in the Offensive just so the press gets highlites?
Vic Rattlehead 05-04-2005, 04:27 PM That's the second place on these boards I've seen "all" censored in one of your posts. Da hell? :)
Zone Alarm firewall. For some reason, on my laptop, "all" is censored. If I shutdown Zone Alarm, it works.
