The most interesting two teams after the first games.

Austria played a great hard checking, fast and physical tempo that made their goalie look better than he had to be that day. A couple of talented forwards making chances by themselves.

Belarus had a goalie stand on his head and make many solid saves and the forwards created scoring chances and set up well on the powerplay, knew how to keep the puck in the offensive zone for stretches.

Team Defense & Surges
vs.
Hot Goalie and Offensive Formations

Prediction: 2-1 Austria on a Setzinger goal late.

it will be a tougher game for Austria than the opening day game against Russia. Traditionally Austria has had a hard time against teams that play a more physical game and a more similar style to their own. A lot will depend on who is the hotter goalie and what team can bring out their best hockey this evening.

If Austria manages to not play overly nervous we will win this game 2-1 or 3-1. But it can also just as easily go the other way...

The key for Austria will be to shut down Grabovsky, Kostitsyn, Tsyplakov and Koltsov and to be patient in the offensive zone.

But this is going to be a close game which could go either way. Both teams play a similar, tight checking style and rely on their goalies.

I think this may be the best game of the day. Pulling for Austria, but believe Belarus will win 2 -1

austria will win by two goals :-) ..... it will be a very closed game hopefully mezin has a weak day and brückler plays the same way as against russia. the key will be if austria can match the favourite role in this game. in the last years we always played a strong opener and failed in the key-game. this year everthing will be different.

So far i see a slight advantage for austria, but Belarus has played shorthanded most of the time so far.

Grabovsky scores on the powerplay. Phillipe lakos was off for an unnecessary penalty and the belarussian powerplay was strong this time.

powerplay, fast and precise passing by the belarussians. good pass from behind the net to the bully point, shot, brückler saves, but grabovsky scores on the rebound.

I'd rather be watching this game instead of the complete dominance of Team Sweden over Denmark... :(

grabovsky scores another one. they always leave him alone on the powerplay.

So does this mean he has a hat trick?

Damn, from all accounts, Grabovski has been playing very well for Belarus, couple with his great season in Russia, he's looking like quite the find for Montreal in the 4th round...

I guess that head scratching from Habs fans at the draft has been replaced by :yo: head nodding!

I don't think so. They will both have 2 points and Belarus will advance because they beat Austrians. What worries me is that Russia will have to beat confident Belarus and score more goals than Slovaks score on Austrians. I hope Austrians put a lot of effort in front of their own crowd and make it tough for Slovaks!

1. Russia 1-1-0 7-5 3
2. Slovakia 1-1-0 5-4 3
3. Belarus 1-0-1 6-2 2
4. Austria 0-0-2 2-9 0

what a poor effort.

grabovsky played a good game but you have to consider that normally he has to compete with a defender .....

- Mikhail Grabovsky
- Too many penalties
- No offense
- No leader on the ice (where were Setzinger, Kalt?)
- Bad powerplay
- Bad penalty killing

I think that's pretty much all the reasons for this loss. It's a shame that the austrian players didn't even fight to make the score look better.

On a positive note, I would like to say that young Patrick Harand played a solid game and never gave up.

Why would you care about the outcome of the Austria - Slovakia game ? Slovakia will enter the next round with 3 points and a 5-4 goal difference anyway. The only thing that will change wether they're first or second is their schedule.

Because it is important to me who finishes first in the group. I have a A1-D1 ticket and I want to see Russia. Otherwise, you are right, it wouldn't matter much.
