Raipe 04-30-2005, 08:16 AM Let the games begin.4-1
Padawan 04-30-2005, 08:16 AM First game of the tournament. It's important to get a solid victory from the first game and Team Finland should take it. I would think Team Denmark tries to defend and exploit any chance to do a counter attack. I predict a solid 7-1 victory to Team Finland.
For the honour of vappu, Finland will crush Denmark 9-0.
Olli Jokinen 3+2
Tomi Kallio 2+3
Ville Peltonen 1+5
Jani Rita 1+1
Niklas Hagman 1+1
Petteri Nummelin 1+0
Pekka Saravo 0+2
Mr. Penguin 04-30-2005, 08:27 AM Finland will crush Denmark.
7-1.
Bubba64 04-30-2005, 08:44 AM Who will get the start between pipes? Norrena ? I hope so ...
wilka91* 04-30-2005, 08:44 AM 6-0 Finland.
psycho_dad 04-30-2005, 08:52 AM Norrena will start unfortunately.
7-0 finland. Peltonen will score the trick.
Engineer 04-30-2005, 09:09 AM 6-2 Finland. Jesper Damgaard and Kim Staal for Denmark.
ALF AmericanLionsFan 04-30-2005, 09:15 AM 5 -1 Finland
Diaboli 04-30-2005, 10:10 AM I say 4-0, Hirsch is a solid goalie, and they have some good players in their D as well..
Vikke 04-30-2005, 01:06 PM Don't expect Finland to outscore Denmark big.
I'd say 4-2 or something like that.
Sotnos 04-30-2005, 01:11 PM Norrena will start unfortunately.
Unfortunately? That's the only thing I want to see the game for. FINALLY I'll get to see this guy play.
VanIslander 04-30-2005, 01:12 PM 6-0 Finland.
:shakehead :shakehead :shakehead
Don't you guys know how well Denmark has been playing lately?
I predict a 3-3 final.
That said, I expect Finland to bounce back in the tourney and go to the semifinals at least.
Riddarn 04-30-2005, 01:15 PM Finland will win by a score of 3 - 0.

Yes I know, and my 7-0 prediction still stands. Finland has a team that can absolutely destroy opponents that are not in the top 7, but could lose to the other top 6 because there are only few "big game players". Finland has not lost to anyone outside the top countries in 12 years.
These finnish league players like Jussi Jokinen etc. really bring it on in games against an easier opponent, so it should be a real beating tonight. Denmark has a very good team though, it's just that Finland usually takes care of the easier opponents pretty well.

We all know how dangerous Denmark is especially in the beginnig of the tournament. It´s just that we Finns give 110% in every game and don´t just surf around like our Russian neighbours ;)
I hope 6-3 for Finland and 6 shots for Denmark leading to a goalie exchange in the nest game. In Bäcks I trust! Norrena hasn´t convinced me enough in international tournaments.
psycho_dad 04-30-2005, 01:24 PM Unfortunately? That's the only thing I want to see the game for. FINALLY I'll get to see this guy play.
In my opinion, Bäckström is the hot goalie right now and he should be our #1. Norrena is a solid starter and I know we will win denmark with him, but he is also a guy that lets in 1 or 2 goals per game by default.
stv11 04-30-2005, 01:24 PM I predict a 6-2 win for Finland, and Nummelin takes the tournament scoring lead (I wish)
VanIslander 04-30-2005, 01:26 PM we Finns give 110% in every game and don´t just surf around like our Russian neighbours ;)
You didn't see the Austrian game today then. The Russians were not "surfing". More like flopping like beached whales everytime they got knocked down while trying to surge individualistically toward the net.
But I get your point: I greatly admire the Finn's tenacity and resilience. Esa, Jari, and Jere were no flukes in the NHL! They are among my favourites of all time.
john g 04-30-2005, 01:35 PM cant wait to finally see franz nielsen
Vikke 04-30-2005, 01:59 PM cant wait to finally see franz nielsen
Check out Peter Regin and Jannik Hansen, two 19 year olds in Denmark, too.
john g 04-30-2005, 02:01 PM Check out Peter Regin and Jannik Hansen, two 19 year olds in Denmark, too.
Will do, thanks
Engineer 04-30-2005, 02:09 PM Both have been drafted. Regin by the Sens and Hansen by the Nucks.
They will play together on the 2nd line, along with Frans Nielsen (Isles)
john g 04-30-2005, 02:36 PM 0-0 with about 7 minutes left in period one
nothing too exciting happening
stv11 04-30-2005, 02:36 PM Anyone watching the game here ?
john g 04-30-2005, 02:37 PM Parssinen leaves with what looks like a leg injury
john g 04-30-2005, 02:42 PM only 2 or 3 real scoring chances so far in the game -- a real snoozer
john g 04-30-2005, 02:45 PM Hentunen got leveled in open ice by Andreasen -- best action in the 1st period
john g 04-30-2005, 02:46 PM Interference on Denmark -- Finland goes to the PP
john g 04-30-2005, 02:48 PM Karalahti from J Jokinen and N Kapanen 1-0
john g 04-30-2005, 02:51 PM Finland on the PP again
Period over 1-0 finland
Parssinen and Kim Staal left with injuries, Olli Jokinen got hit in the face with the puck at the end of the period.
stv11 04-30-2005, 02:56 PM Any update on Pärssinen ?
Pärssinen is likely to return for 2nd period.
Jokinen has played well together with Kapanen and Hentunen (came there after Pärssinen's injury)
SergeiK 04-30-2005, 02:57 PM Any update on Pärssinen ?Finnish tv-commentator just said that they are expecting him back on ice when second period starts.
Very decent start from Denmark. They skated well and came in with good attitude. I believe that real scoring chances were even.
john g 04-30-2005, 03:13 PM Eloranta just misses on a breakaway - Hirsch made the save but it got by him and got stopped by the post
john g 04-30-2005, 03:16 PM Commentator from mediazone broadcast is terrible
"This guy over here is hurt a little bit, and this guy over here is going to the penalty box." :biglaugh:
Denmark played good power play but couldn't score goal.
Still 1-0 for Finland with little over 30 minutes played.
Engineer 04-30-2005, 03:36 PM Staal was taken to hospital with a lacerated foot, he was cut by a skate.
1-0 after two :handclap:
Vikke 04-30-2005, 03:42 PM Staal was taken to hospital with a lacerated foot, he was cut by a skate.
He was cut? I didn't see what happened, hopefully it's nothing serious. You guys really need him for the coming games!
Difficult game, not very good scoring chances for Finland except two breakaways (Hagman and Eloranta)
Denmark is probably getting tired, they didn't play 2nd period as well as 1st despite not allowing any goals.
Engineer 04-30-2005, 03:52 PM He was cut? I didn't see what happened, hopefully it's nothing serious. You guys really need him for the coming games!
Well, I doubt they'd take him to hospital if it was just a superficial cut. And yes, we do need him. His experience is very important to this team. He was an important piece in the line combinations, should they break up the kiddie line (Nielsen, Regin, Hansen).
SergeiK 04-30-2005, 03:58 PM 2-0 Niko Kapanen with backhand. Weak shot went under Peter Hirsch`s arm. My opinion is that Hirsch should have got that one
Engineer 04-30-2005, 04:07 PM The fatigue is beginning to show now. Still 2-0, ½way through the 3rd, though.
Edit: Jokinen has been an absolute MONSTER on faceoffs.
Crossbar 04-30-2005, 04:23 PM Olli Jokinen got hit in the face with the puck at the end of the period.
Is Olli ok?
Engineer 04-30-2005, 04:25 PM 2-1.
Here Come The Danes!
Top shelf, too!
Poor performance by the ref in the last minute. No 2 min for Karalathi, and moves faceoff outside.
SergeiK 04-30-2005, 04:29 PM It`s over. Finland won 2-1.
Padawan 04-30-2005, 04:41 PM Poor performance by the ref in the last minute. No 2 min for Karalathi, and moves faceoff outside.
In the Karalahti situation 2 minutes would not have been wrong but the face off from the neutral zone was a good call. One of the Denmark players passed the puck by hand.
Good disciplined game from Team Denmark and solid goaltending. Team Finland was a disappointment although few players played well. Karalahti was good overall, the third line was the best line for Team Finland. Norrena played an ok game too. The important thing we got ourselves a victory. Not the solid victory I hoped and expected but victory nevertheless.
Great game from Team Denmark. :handclap:

Great game from Team Denmark. :handclap:
Looking at the goaltending situation... This was the second time that Norrena only faced around 15 shots, and still let in 1. I don't know if this is a fair assesment....but his save percentage is not looking that great. What would happen if the opposing team peppered him with 30-40 shots?
I think that Westerlund seriously has to consider giving Backstrom a chance, otherwise I don't like the look of this at all. :shakehead

that's the most stupid thing I've ever heard.
14 saves on 15 shots : 93.3% ... oh my God, he's soooooo bad! :shakehead
good goalies allow only 1 goal on 50 shots, right?
What would happen if the opposing team peppered him with 30-40 shots?
Guess what, he would allow 1, 2, 3 or 4 goals!

Hey, you are entitled to your opinion...So am I.
I was also talking about the last game that Norrena played against Latvia. Where he faces around the same amout of shots and let in 2 goals. That would be around 86%. It's not bad, but seeing as the defence is doing it's job. I would expect a little more from the goalie (if he is to be considered good).
We are also talking about Denmark and Latvia here.. No offence, but the quality of those shots if probably not the same as that of Canada or Russia.
We will see...

These games are difficult for goalies where they can't get a good rhythm going on. And when they don't have good rhythm going on so the shots are more difficult to save. I'd say considering this situation, Norrena played an ok game. The only goal Team Denmark did was a result of sloppy play by Team Finland's defence. The let the guy skate right in to the best scoring sector and the shots was a good one. Norrena had little chance of saving that shot, but he could have saved it. That's why I said he had an ok game instead of a great game.
If he wouold face against 30-40 shots, I'd say he would play better than he did today. Goalies in general play better with more shots coming in.
Engineer 04-30-2005, 05:43 PM Staal to have surgery Saturday. Suffered a "severe" laceration of the right foot, cut by a skate. The extent of the damage is as yet unknown, but some tendons could be affected. Sounds eerily like that injury Audette suffered a few years ago, to the wrist.

You may be right.. I might be jumping down Norrena's throat too early here. My problem is that I didn't get to see the game on TV, I only saw the score and stats. Maybe if I had seen the game live, I would have a different take on the situation. Thanks TSN for not showing this game :thumbd:

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope he recovers soon. Injuries are part of the game but I hate to see it happen so every time... :shakehead
psycho_dad 04-30-2005, 06:23 PM good goalies allow only 1 goal on 50 shots, right?
Well..YES.
That goal was not his fault, but it was Denmarks ONLY scoring chance in the game. Hard to say really...If Denmark had like 4-5 scoring chances in the game and Norrena let in one, that would have been good...this time we wont see how he would have been in the 4 other chances. But then again...Brodeur sucked also :)
Ajacied 05-01-2005, 05:10 AM What is it with Niko Kapanen whenever he puts on a Finland jersey..
Jokerit Wasp 05-01-2005, 06:32 AM Norrena played a solid game.
Poor defence from Finland allowed the Dane to skate in loads of open ice right at Norrena and fire a lazer RIGHT in the TOP CORNER....not many NMs would have saved it, had it been Heatley/Jokinen/Zetterberg who shot it, everyone would be saying "wow, what a shot".
Im not saying Norrena is the best in the tourny, but yesterday he couldnt have done anything more than he did.
Streaker-man 05-01-2005, 06:51 AM What is it with Niko Kapanen whenever he puts on a Finland jersey..
The energy in the teletubbie line! Pure chemistry between Niko, Timo Pärssinen and Jukka Hentunen! (Sometimes featuring J. Jokinen)

The Swedish broadcast said he got cut over a toe (how the hell can a skate cut through the skate there?). He wont be back for this WC's :(
mikkoz 05-01-2005, 08:47 AM that's the most stupid thing I've ever heard.
Agreed, lets send Brodeaur back to Canada, he was so bad against Latvia.
