Steveorama 04-30-2005, 12:01 AM Looking at the two lineups, I'm leaning toward Canada on this one.
Of course, you never know...a lot of Canadians have not been playing meaningful hockey for over a year...
Habsfan 32 04-30-2005, 12:12 AM I think Canada is going to win but they will be surprised by Latvia.
Berkut 04-30-2005, 12:44 AM 2-1 Latvia..............................i hope
Habsfan 32 04-30-2005, 12:54 AM As for the score goes I'm saying. 4-1 Canada. With our goals coming from Gagne,Doan,Thornton and Souray. Brodeur plays a very strong game.
Everest 04-30-2005, 01:00 AM Canada will shut out Latvia...and TSN playxplay will buthcer the Latvian players name pronunciations
Habsfan 32 04-30-2005, 01:08 AM Canada will shut out Latvia...and TSN playxplay will buthcer the Latvian players name pronunciations
They can't be worst then RDS.
Oil_slick9416* 04-30-2005, 01:10 AM Canada will shut out Latvia...and TSN playxplay will buthcer the Latvian players name pronunciations
can't be worse than the way you butchered the word butcher.
NeoCanuck 04-30-2005, 01:25 AM Brendan Morrison with a Hat-Trick and 4 Assists.
Oil_slick9416* 04-30-2005, 01:27 AM Brendan Morrison with a Hat-Trick and 4 Assists.
and ryan smyth gets 2 goals and 5 assists :sarcasm:
Wisent 04-30-2005, 01:55 AM I'm going with a 2-1 for Canada.
SPARTAKUS* 04-30-2005, 02:08 AM Well, here we go baby. Let's play some hockey!!!!. 5:0 Canada. Brodeur with the SO.
Kronblom 04-30-2005, 05:01 AM Past results:
2004: 6-1 Canada
2003: 2-0 Canada
2002: 4-1 Canada
Canada tied Austria (2-2) in their opening game last year, a repeat this time? Maybe not, my "bold" prediction is 4-1 Canada.
PredsFan77* 04-30-2005, 05:06 AM Lativa 26-4
Boucicaut 04-30-2005, 07:42 AM Reason says 4-1 Canada, heart says 3-2 Latvia (my wife is Latvian).
Mr. Penguin 04-30-2005, 08:29 AM Canada's first game so there's a possibilty for a surprise... hmm...
2-2 I say.
wassup77 04-30-2005, 08:33 AM I seriously (this is NOT a joke) think that Canada win with about 3-0
wilka91* 04-30-2005, 08:42 AM 15-0 Lativa :dunce:
No seriously, 4-1 Canada.
ALF AmericanLionsFan 04-30-2005, 09:13 AM 4 - 0 Canada
Macman 04-30-2005, 09:24 AM 7-1 Canada.
stv11 04-30-2005, 09:33 AM Canada are rarely in top shape early in the tournament, and they also rarely record blowout against weaker teams, so my guess is 3-1 Canada
Vic Rattlehead 04-30-2005, 09:34 AM Lativa 26-4
Canada will Tie latvia 20-20. :teach:
Everest 04-30-2005, 09:35 AM can't be worse than the way you butchered the word butcher.
mibad...I nailed "pronuciations" though! (I think?)
Canada has 2 weeks of prep. work before this game...so I think its safe to expect a sharp performance this morning. They should be able to shut out Latvia, and spend the entire game controlling the puck/play.
We have been slow starters in INT. tourneys on numerous occasions...but this one will be different. I think Heatley will be in on the scoring...I wonder if Artie Irbe starts for the Latvians? He is a "neat" little goalie...fun to watch.
I expect some problems for Canada. This game will end up tie 2-2.
VanIslander 04-30-2005, 09:47 AM If Arturs Irbe plays as he has before (though a while ago), Karlis Skrastins plays in front of the net as he has impressed last season, and a no-name forward like Vasiljevs scores a timely goal
Latvia could win 1-0 or tie 1-1.
But I give them about a 10 % chance of doing it.
Odds are, a 4-1 Canadian win would be respectable all around.
Everest 04-30-2005, 09:47 AM I expect some problems for Canada. This game will end up tie 2-2.
Not a chance...later in the tourney Canada might miss Niedermayer...but for this game...I predict we score in the first 3 minutes of the game...and never look back!
nikki9 04-30-2005, 10:13 AM I expect some problems for Canada. This game will end up tie 2-2.
Not gonna happen, the game starts in 2 minutes and you'll see.

You're right, you never know but hey, they're already off to a good start!!!
Boucicaut 04-30-2005, 10:24 AM A Latvian was tripped in front of the net just before the goal. No call.
chicpea* 04-30-2005, 10:24 AM 1-1. Semijonovs off the draw.
nikki9 04-30-2005, 10:25 AM 1-1, scratch that!!!
chicpea* 04-30-2005, 10:28 AM Dumb penalty on Smyth - negated a good chance for Heatley.
nikki9 04-30-2005, 10:28 AM Way to go Smith!!! :madfire:
Boucicaut 04-30-2005, 10:31 AM 1-1. Semijonovs off the draw.
A nice goal too!
Everest 04-30-2005, 10:35 AM Dan Boyle looks great early on...Heatley flashed on a great set up from him.
chicpea* 04-30-2005, 10:39 AM A nice goal too!
For sure, but also piss-poor coverage on the side of the net.
Thornton's line looks unstoppable so far.
nikki9 04-30-2005, 10:48 AM Ha ha, McGuire has to throw in a diving comment!!!! :biglaugh:
Ha ha, McGuire has to throw in a diving comment!!!! :biglaugh:
Did he make a comment about the interference on the first goal? Otherwise he is just pathetic... :)
nikki9 04-30-2005, 10:49 AM Horrible Reffing!!!!
chicpea* 04-30-2005, 10:49 AM um, great call on Marleau.
trbr86 04-30-2005, 10:50 AM nice "high-stick" there, eh? :dunno:
nikki9 04-30-2005, 10:51 AM Did he make a comment about the interference on the first goal? Otherwise he is just pathetic... :)
When the goalie for Latvia fell for the second time, McGuire implied that he took some diving lessons from the Czechs this year while playing in their Elite League, you gotta expect that from McGuire.
Hockey_Nut99 04-30-2005, 10:59 AM Were lucky Morrow didn't get called for highsticking their goalie in the head. Or I think it was Morrow?
nikki9 04-30-2005, 11:02 AM Were lucky Morrow didn't get called for highsticking their goalie in the head. Or I think it was Morrow?
Highsticking??? I didn't see any highsticking!! :sarcasm:
Hockey_Nut99 04-30-2005, 11:03 AM Highsticking??? I didn't see any highsticking!! :sarcasm:
lol
Oil_slick9416* 04-30-2005, 11:07 AM good first period from canada. started off strong, kept the puck in the latvian zone. good puck pressure in the opening minutes. then they sorta fell out of the game plan and got caught running around a bit. the denfense looks a little shaky out there, but they will tighten up. it's quite obvious to see the latvians are in better shape as by the end of the 1st the canadians looked pretty tired. Marty looks fine out there. and the reffing was great as far as reffing goes. lets see how they come out in 2nd and 3rd.
i'm guessing a 3-1 game
Wisent 04-30-2005, 11:08 AM Waaaaah, no Irbe in goal. I have hhim in my pool.
nikki9 04-30-2005, 11:12 AM and the reffing was great as far as reffing goes.
Did you miss the "highsticking" call against Canada???? :dunno:
Oil_slick9416* 04-30-2005, 11:13 AM i like the way canada is crashing the net. it's not very affective now, but soon the goalie will crack. but they can't get penalty's when they crash JOVO :madfire:
Oil_slick9416* 04-30-2005, 11:16 AM Did you miss the "highsticking" call against Canada???? :dunno:
you gotta give the ref a break on that. in all fairness the latvian was hit with elbow an and he went down, the refs will almost always call that. even if marleau got a penalty for trying to stay on his feet. that just speaks vloumes about the way the europeans call the game. if marleau had have went down he the latvian might have got the penalty, but he decided to stay on his feet and got punished for it. it's pretty sad when you get punished for good balance and trying to stay on your feet. but after watching the women's championships and the U18's, this reffing has been great.
Oil_slick9416* 04-30-2005, 11:18 AM penalty coming up to latvia for tripping. canada has not had a good start to the 2nd period
Everest 04-30-2005, 11:19 AM A timely powerplay chance coming up. Canada needs to get there act back together right now!
nikki9 04-30-2005, 11:21 AM you gotta give the ref a break on that. in all fairness the latvian was hit with elbow an and he went down, the refs will almost always call that. even if marleau got a penalty for trying to stay on his feet. that just speaks vloumes about the way the europeans call the game. if marleau had have went down he the latvian might have got the penalty, but he decided to stay on his feet and got punished for it. it's pretty sad when you get punished for good balance and trying to stay on your feet. but after watching the women's championships and the U18's, this reffing has been great.
Ok well, if you compare it to the women's....but still the ref could have made an appropriate call.
Oil_slick9416* 04-30-2005, 11:21 AM Canadian goal!!! #97!!
2-1 canada
Oil_slick9416* 04-30-2005, 11:22 AM Ok well, if you compare it to the women's....but still the ref could have made an appropriate call.
but he didn't. thats the why it goes. but he's letting alot of pysical play go. he;s doing a good job.
Belanger25 04-30-2005, 11:23 AM Wow that was sad. Thornton missed that wide open net. Good thing he was able to get the rebound.
Oil_slick9416* 04-30-2005, 11:24 AM penalty to philips. latvia going on the PP
Wow that was sad. Thornton missed that wide open net. Good thing he was able to get the rebound.
meh he still scored. the puck ended up in the back of the net. that's what counts.
nikki9 04-30-2005, 11:24 AM Ah, the ref is certainly not the worst I've ever seen, I'm just mad cause it caused Latvia to score, I'm just defending my country. Don't worry I know you're certainly not against them either.
Everest 04-30-2005, 11:25 AM Wow that was sad. Thornton missed that wide open net. Good thing he was able to get the rebound.
That was a tough angle,on a quick pass...Nash and Thronton have been the best players in the game so far.
nikki9 04-30-2005, 11:26 AM Go Marty!!!!! :handclap:
Oil_slick9416* 04-30-2005, 11:27 AM Ah, the ref is certainly not the worst I've ever seen, I'm just mad cause it caused Latvia to score, I'm just defending my country. Don't worry I know you're certainly not against them either.

Vic Rattlehead 04-30-2005, 11:57 AM Mcguire questioned the Canadian powerplay this morning in the pre-game...he's eating his microphone now!
It was horrible in the pre-game matches. He had the right to do so.
Everest 04-30-2005, 11:58 AM The glass in Innsbruck is "old school"...making it an unreliable clearing option. Canada needs to stay away from trying to put the puck on that glass...its trouble!
nikki9 04-30-2005, 11:58 AM ...but most of the time he's really lame.
Oh well, he's there and we can't get rid of him so lets just accept it and move on.
Vic Rattlehead 04-30-2005, 11:59 AM The Gagne - Thornton - Nash line has three of the five goals for Canada. Total domination by this line.
Oil_slick9416* 04-30-2005, 12:00 PM canada's powerplay and penalty killing has impressed me, as for 5 on 5, the second period was brutal for canada in that regard. except for that nash goal. and the defence! oh boy, they need some work to come together as a team. i say lock em up in a room tonight and make em share thier feelings
Everest 04-30-2005, 12:02 PM It was horrible in the pre-game matches. He had the right to do so.
I can't say I would be doubting the powerplay on account of exhibition games...they are called "tune ups" for a reason.
Morrison,Heatley,Nash,Thornton and a couple of D-men give Canada alot of options. How could Pierre realistically think we were going to have trouble figuring things out?
I think our powerplay will be effective evey time its allowed to go to work as often as this game.

Just kidding. But should that last goal count? I mean Nash really pushed the goalie and the puck inside the net with his legs ... doesn't matter.

No, it should count, a goal for Canada is a goal for Canada regardless of how it was made.

Oil_slick9416* 04-30-2005, 12:29 PM i am amazed at how our D is playing...very bad. Latvia is playing strong on the puck and are beating the forcheckers and getting the puck back down in the Canadian zone creating odd man rushes. play has really picked up...for the latvians
CH Wizard* 04-30-2005, 12:29 PM Hey, its the first game, don't you think you're pushing it a little??
Yeah, you remember Salt Lake city? We had a terrible start but we bounced back and won the gold medal!
It's too early to tell here.

Everest 04-30-2005, 12:30 PM An energy shift from Fisher, hopefully restores some momentum. Dan Boyle has been the only defenceman remotely reliable so far today.
Captain Leaf 04-30-2005, 12:31 PM I dont see no Sakics ,lemieuxs or Iginlas on this team .

yes, sourray is not looking good. he got exposed very badly in the second. caught looking in the crowd and the latvians just snuck in behind him, almost caused a goal, it caused an odd man rush though.

This site says Thornton had an assist on the 5th goal, which would give Thornton 3 points. I guess we'll have to wait a while to see which site it right.
Oil_slick9416* 04-30-2005, 12:53 PM Overall good game by canada. the D needs some tweaking and we'll be fine.
Everest 04-30-2005, 12:54 PM Healy is right...the defence men were scattering too much of the ice time. Canada needs to load 4 guys up with the bulk of the ice time and ease who ever else into the game with limited action. That will go a long way to cutting down on the ugly turn overs and lack of awareness that kept the game so wide open today.

Good point... and even if Austria is stronger, I don't think there's enough of a difference to get anything out of it.
It's good to see a lack of doormats in international competition. I'd rather watch an entertaining game that sees Canada scrape out a win, rather than a 15-1 wallpapering (like Canada did to Denmark at the U-18's).
Besides, Latvia has played Canada relatively well the past few meetings. Most are 1-2 goal affairs.
Wow I think this game showed us that Canada is still very rusty. It should be interesting when we play one of the good teams like Russia or the Sweds.

Macman 04-30-2005, 02:11 PM A decent first step. Canada's pp and pk were great, as was Thornton's line. Canada didn't play with any intensity five-on-five until Latvia made it 5-4. Say want you want about not taking teams lightly, but Canada clearly didn't come out with its A game against Latvia. The defence looked very spotty, but that will improve, especially when Habscheid shortens the bench later in the tournament.
Nash is awesome. I expect Slovenia to be in a world of hurt on Tuesday.
Boucicaut 04-30-2005, 02:16 PM A good and exciting game overall. Canada took the points, as expected, but Latvia managed to show that it is not light years behind the top countries.
Everest 04-30-2005, 02:33 PM Canada's players would agree with you. Latvia worked hard...and they really didn't lay back and play too much trap..like so many "2nd tier" teams will try and do.
Canadas defence is going to get critisized...all because people don't see the super huge names on the list in Austria...but they are still miles better than 90% of the teams in the tounrey.

slats432 04-30-2005, 04:53 PM I thought it was a very average performance by a superior team. Latvia's coach probably said what was true. Some of these guys have only been on skates a dozen times this year. Skate your ***** off and you will be competitive.
"The Canadian defense had trouble containing the speed of the Latvians." :biglaugh:
As for the Canadian that was pumping the fantastic Canadian defense. Give your head a shake, they were craptastic. They looked rusty and out of shape. In the real world Latvia gets 14 shots on goal in a 8-1 romp.

Canada's D playing bad = Czech
Canada's D playing bad >>> Germany
Canada's D playing bad >>> Slovenia
Try to challenge that and come up with a reasonable argument while doing so.
Oh yeah? Well, I think Canada has the worst D.
Canada's D at best << Slovakia
Canada's D at best <<<<<< USA
Canada's D at best <<< Finland
Canada's D at best << Sweden
Canada's D at best < Russia
Canada's D at best < Czech
Canada's D at best << Germany
Canada's D at best = Slovenia (only after they're plastered though, otherwise <<< Slovenia)
Try to challenge that logic and come up with a reasonable argument while doing so.
Mr. Canucklehead 04-30-2005, 05:01 PM Anybody who thinks "Well gee, as long as the other teams' defense look worse on paper than ours, we'll be fine" has another thing coming. If our defense plays the way it did today for the rest of the tournament, we won't just be going home without the gold, we'll be going home with a lot of laughter from the other countries.
With all respect to Latvia, they played a helluva game and gave Canada a great run for their money, but our defense really needs to wake up. The time for tune-ups and "getting into the flow" is over, and they need to be on their A-Game.
As for the people who say they don't see any Sakics or Iginlas on this team, Rick Nash sure seemed to come answer the bell. He stepped up big time with the hat-trick.
Onto the next game.
~Canucklehead~
Everest 04-30-2005, 05:04 PM I thought it was a very average performance by a superior team.
Well, nice to see the Red and White coloured glasses are out in full force this year. ;)
What real world are you living in? Where is this planet that Canada could have been beat by ANYONE 8-1...let alone Latvia.
I'm not going to say our defence looks like its going to be "fantastic"...but in the "real world" I'm from...they will be plenty capable.
Shareefruck 04-30-2005, 05:09 PM Canada's players would agree with you. Latvia worked hard...and they really didn't lay back and play too much trap..like so many "2nd tier" teams will try and do.
Canadas defence is going to get critisized...all because people don't see the super huge names on the list in Austria...but they are still miles better than 90% of the teams in the tounrey.Uhh.. no, they're getting critisized because they're playing horribly.... rightfully so. It has nothing to do with the lack of big names.
onice 04-30-2005, 05:17 PM Canada's defence wasn't top notch in this game but you guys are underestimating this Latvian team. I was surprised at their speed and skill set. I think this is a good team. A couple of posters called them a tier-two team. If they're a second tier team, they may just be one star player away from a tier one team. I was really impressed with their play.
It's nice to see hockey picking up in places other than the top 7 countries. I hope in a few years the championships will host 18-20 world class teams.
And I wish some of my fellow countrymen would stop with their homer remarks.
ALF AmericanLionsFan 04-30-2005, 05:25 PM Being a Nash fan it's nice to see him score a hat trick, but I think this is going to be a very unpredictable tourney with all the layoffs some guys had. It will be very interesting.
Everest 04-30-2005, 05:54 PM ...Again...I'n not going to put opur defence up on a pedestal...and say "this is what we wanted"...but "very capable" is a fair assesment.
This was DAY ONE!! Look at how we opened up against Austria last year...things worked out pretty good in the end didn't they?
Every tourney its the same thing "They're horrible...they allowed 4 goals against"
They're out of shape, they're going to lose...
and every year...we win.
nuckfan in TO 04-30-2005, 06:39 PM Our defense will get better... Brodeur will get better... our team will get better.
These guys need more time. They needed time in previous tourney's to gel as a team as well. This time they've had more time together with a longer camp than usual, but most of these guys haven't played hockey for a year.
Everyone on the team knows they have to play better too. The offense was great - especially the top line (how much time before we hear Thornton to CBJ or Nash to Bos rumours on these boards??)... but that was against one of the weaker teams in the tourney...
The defense was good enough to win - against one of the weaker teams.
The whole team will have to improve though... you don't win gold medals in tourneys like this one with performances throughout like we saw this morning.
I totally believe that every player on the team must know that.
wilka91* 04-30-2005, 06:48 PM and what if everything will only get worse?
Captain Leaf 04-30-2005, 06:58 PM Then we will restructure our minor hockey system again :p:
Everest 04-30-2005, 06:58 PM If we "get worse"...Brodeur will bail us out and steal the tournament. Doomsday predictions are taken care of with the best goaltending in the universe.

well then Brodeur better raise his play.... cause if he doesn't get better than what he showed this morning, he's not bailing our team out when this team is playing against some better competition.
like the defense, Brodeur also has to get better... he didn't have close to a "best goaltending in the universe" performance today.
KariyaIsGod* 04-30-2005, 07:38 PM and what if everything will only get worse?
Well, we should be okay because no other powerhouse team played well either...
Russia, Slovakia, and Finland were all equally as bad if not worse than Canada..
God Bless Canada 04-30-2005, 07:55 PM Anyone who's excited about this game should calm down. In the same breath, anyone who's panicing after this game should calm down. Let's take this for what it is: a game that we didn't play particularly well in, against a lesser oppenent, but let's keep a couple things in mind:
1) This game really doesn't mean much. These first round robin games don't mean much. The convoluted, two round robin system removes any meaning from these contests.
2) At the Worlds, Canada tends to get better as the tournament progresses. I believe we've tied/barely beat lesser teams each of the last two years.
I still have concerns about Canada's endurance/rustiness. Those concerns would be the same if we'd won 10-1.
I would like to see Luongo start against the US.
It doesn't matter who starts against Slovenia.
Tricolore#20 04-30-2005, 09:12 PM I would like to see Luongo start against the US.

I agree that Luongo should get a game in this opening round, whether its Slovenia or the USA.
I think had Canada lost to the Czech Republic at the World Cup, Pat Quinn would probably have been criticized for not playing Luongo in one of the preliminary round games. Although he performed well, Luongo was shaky at times as he hadn't played a full game (including World Cup exhibition) since April. To avert this potential criticism, Habscheid should try and start Luongo, in order to keep him sharp in case Brodeur goes down again.
Everest 04-30-2005, 11:01 PM Brodeur is the #1 guy...but definarely Roberto needs to get a game in...I'd be suprised if he didn't start against Slovenia...and then back to Brodeur...all the way through until the little girls in skirts are handing out tulips and Golden medals.

Canada Cup final 1981: Soviet Union 8, Canada 1
Oh yes: this very same planet.
Brazilian Avs Fan 04-30-2005, 11:29 PM Guys.. is there any online radio where we're able to listen to the games?

Lets see...Canada won the last two world championships and before that...hmm...not too many times. In fact exactly two times in the period 1970-2002. How does that compare with your statement?
Based on this and your comments in general, I must presume that you were born in 2002, and never saw any other teams take gold.
svetovy poharu 04-30-2005, 11:52 PM A stat that really surprised me from the CAN-LAT game was that in the faceoffs won category, nobody from either team had won more than 50% of their draws.
Very equally played in the faceoff circles.
Faceoff leaders:
CANADA:
Kris Draper, 18 FO's (9-9, 50.00%)
Brendan Morrison, 11 FO's (5-6, 45.45%)
Joe Thornton, 20 FO's (9-11, 45.00%)
LATVIJA:
Aleksandrs Semjonovs, 22 FO's (11-11, 50.00%)
Janis Sprukts, 17 FO's (8-9, 47.06%)
Herberts Vasiljevs, 5 FO's (2-3, 40.00%)

I saw that too. Um, how is that possible? If one player has below 50%, then someone else must be above.
spank303 05-01-2005, 12:14 AM I saw that too. Um, how is that possible? If one player has below 50%, then someone else must be above.
Because the same players don't take faceoffs against each other on every single shift.
Did Scott Walker play? If yes, how did he play?
Everest 05-01-2005, 12:39 AM Walker played...he looked "ok".
NeoCanuck 05-01-2005, 04:34 AM Well, Morrison didn't get the Hat Trick and 4 Assists, but at least he got a sweet PP goal..
aforc3 05-01-2005, 08:57 AM yeah go Nash and Go BIG JOE
Nash is playing right now hes best Hockey, like he played in the playoff's for Davos !!!!
