12# Peter Bondra 04-27-2005, 04:03 PM The final roster so far:
Brankári: Ján Lašák (Moeller Pardubice/ČR), Rastislav Staňa (SK Södertälje/Švéd.), Karol Križan (HKm Zvolen)
Obrancovia: Martin Štrbák (CSKA Moskva/Rus.), Ľubomír Višňovský, René Vydarený (obaja Slovan Bratislava), Richard Lintner (Fribourg Gotteron/Švajč.), Zdeno Chára (BK Färjestad/Švéd.), Radoslav Suchý (Tatravagónka ŠKP Poprad), Ivan Majeský (Sparta Praha/ČR), Dominik Graňák (Slavia Praha/ČR)
Útočníci: Žigmund Pálffy, Jozef Stümpel (obaja Slavia Praha/ČR), Miroslav Šatan (Slovan Bratislava), Pavol Demitra, Marián Hossa, Marián Gáborík (všetci Dukla Trenčín), Michal Handzuš, Richard Zedník, Vladimír Országh (všetci HKm Zvolen), Marcel Hossa (Mora IK/Švéd.), Ľuboš Bartečko (Dinamo Moskva/Rus.), Peter Pucher (Znojemští Orli Znojmo/ČR), Juraj Štefanka (HC Vítkovice/ČR), Branko Radivojevič (HS Lulea/Švéd.)
Obsut, Stehlik and Nagy cut as Nagy was injured in todays game :shakehead :( .
BUT he will undergo medical tests and still may go to Austria and replace one of the attackers.
Its HORRID Marcel Hossa made the team. He just sucked today.
Edler Statesman* 04-27-2005, 04:15 PM What led to Obsut being cut? He was your 2nd best defenseman at the world cup behind Chara
12# Peter Bondra 04-27-2005, 04:20 PM What led to Obsut being cut? He was your 2nd best defenseman at the world cup behind Chara
Dont know really. He didnt play a bad game or make any mistakes like Lintner. Id take him over Vydareny to be honest.
12# Peter Bondra 04-27-2005, 06:17 PM The coach said he wasnt taken due to his left handed shot and opted for a right handed shot D-man.
Steveorama 04-27-2005, 06:27 PM Wow! The Slovaks took Vydareny over Obsut?!
Even with the leftie/rightie issue, that makes no sense to me. Obsut is an okay dman while Rene V is an adventure in his own zone...sort of a Bret Hedican, but with zero hockey sense.
Bizarre.
Some might say Bret Hedican does'nt have a lot of hockey sense either.
ahmon 04-27-2005, 08:07 PM isn't vydareny left handed shot too?
Útočníci: Žigmund Pálffy, Jozef Stümpel (obaja Slavia Praha/ČR), Miroslav Šatan (Slovan Bratislava), Pavol Demitra, Marián Hossa, Marián Gáborík (všetci Dukla Trenčín), Michal Handzuš, Richard Zedník, Vladimír Országh (všetci HKm Zvolen), Marcel Hossa (Mora IK/Švéd.), Ľuboš Bartečko (Dinamo Moskva/Rus.), Peter Pucher (Znojemští Orli Znojmo/ČR), Juraj Štefanka (HC Vítkovice/ČR), Branko Radivojevič (HS Lulea/Švéd.)
That "Útočníci" is scary. Why there`s not Martin Bartek? Was he even close to get to the team?
Team_Spirit 04-28-2005, 12:52 AM great offence again this year :)
I have hopes the D will do well , i dont know how everyone performed this year trough .
Ismellofhockey 04-28-2005, 01:46 AM Just a guesswork lineup, to see what each line looks like:
Satan - Demitra - Palffy
Gaborik - Stumpel - Hossa
Orszagh - Handzus - Zednik
Bartecko - Pucher - Radivojevic
That's maybe the best forward group of all the national teams.
If they pair up Chara with a real defenceman instead of Lintner and if Lasak plays as well as he usually does in international tourneys, Slovakia could win gold!
Hassan 04-28-2005, 05:01 AM Looks tough. I'd say Slovakia has the best team on peper, but we'll see...
clefty 04-28-2005, 06:56 AM I like Slovakia for this tournament. As always, goaltending is the key.
kremlin 04-28-2005, 07:09 AM Why didn't Stehlik make the cut?
Why didn't Stehlik make the cut?
He is not reliable in his own end. I was also surprised that Obsut was cut.

the best ? hardly and how do you figure ?
Canada lines up with
Gagne - Thornton - Nash
Smyth - Morrison - Heatly
Maltby - Draper - Doan
Fisher - Marleau - Morrow
Slovakia isnt even close when it comes to line composition. Sure they have a few flashy floaters, but thats it.

Those "flashy floaters" as you put it have more firepower than Canada and are certainly well suited to the bigger ice. They have also played all year unlike a few of our guys. Slovakia's third line is also very impressive IMO and at least on par with Maltby, Draper and Doan because none of those guys have played this year IIRC. Zednik is a playoff monster and Handzus ain't bad either in big games. Orszagh hasn't been in the playoffs but he's a gritty player who should do well under pressure.
So that's how I figure they're among the best in the tournament, which if you'll notice is all I was saying.

Where Palffy goes, Stumpel goes. So your top six is probably going to be:
Satan - Demitra - Hossa
Gaborik - Stumpel - Palffy

Well, the lines yesterday were:
Satan-Stumpel-Palffy
Nagy-Demitra-Hossa
But Nagy is defintely OUT, so I dont know who will now be the 2nd LW.
But you are right: Stumpel-Palffy will be together for sure.

jcpenny 04-28-2005, 05:30 PM That slovakian foward Line up is clearly the best in the tournament. They almost have all of their big guns, looks more like an olympic line up.

Chara Lintner
Visnovsky Strbak
Majesky Suchy
Granak
 is that right??
Tricolore#20 04-28-2005, 09:15 PM you don't really know your hockey, do you? BOS-MON last 2 playoffs????????????
I was watching a recap of the 1998 Stanley Cup Finals, and Zednik was prominent in that too (from a Caps perspective), as a rookie.
Shareefruck 04-28-2005, 09:35 PM Damn, Obsut was one of my favorite players, too.
I'd say that's a pretty good lineup, though.. It'll depend on how the defense and Lasak plays.
fredez 04-28-2005, 09:46 PM Zednik a playoff monster? Since when?
He had 8 points in 4 games against Boston in 2001-2002 before being beheaded by McLaren.
Last year he scored the winner and added an empty netter in Game 7 against Boston.
Isn't that enough?

He was a force in the 2001-2002 playoffs.. But since then, Zednik doesnt play the game with the same efficiency.. He is'nt the same player at all... Kovalev and Koivu were his linemates last playoffs, I personnally think Zednik was'nt a factor.
He will have to play the game with fire again like he did 3 years ago.. If not, he will be passed in the depth chart by wingers like Perezhogin, Kostitsyn, Higgins, Ryder and maybe Hossa!

That is crap. Move the third line to the 1st line position, second line to third, and 1st line to second.
Gaborik-Demitra-Hossa
Zednik-Stumpel-Palffy
Bartecko-Handzus-Satan
The only problem is that there is no physicalilty outside of Handzus. If Canada plays to their full potential, the Slovaks are gonna be crushed in the physical department.
mazmin 04-28-2005, 11:08 PM Obsut was always better than Vydareny when I saw them with the Moose and I find it hard to believe Rene has gotten THAT much better in the last season. His supposed "improved play" did not show in his stats in the Slovak league while Obsut was an elite defender in the superior SEL. I've been impressed with Obsut for a few years now. He should be a top 4 defender on Slovakias Olympic team nevermind worldcup. I suspect injury or some other unknown issues are the reason for Obsuts omission.
Too bad about Nagy too, but with or without Nagy and Obsut Slovakia truly looks like a Gold Medal threat. Probably more so now than ever.

He wasn't bad at all last playoffs. But all three of those guys played pretty hurt so you never know. But Zednik definitely plays his best when he's pissed off. See: 2002 playoffs.

well, when i am a homer Canucks fan, its quite frustrating. they havent won much. when i am a homer Team Canada fan, its quite pleasing. Afterall, would probably ice 4 teams capable of winning the gold.

Get off my back.
matys 04-29-2005, 02:40 PM Marcel Hossa and Radivojevic weren´t written to official roster yet. They will be written later. So 4th line looks like: Stefanka-Pucher-Orszagh.
In defense locked pairs are Chara-Lintner and Strbak-Visnovsky. If we will play with 6 dmen then 3rd pair will be Suchy-Majesky. If we´ll play with 8 dmen then IMO there will be Suchy-Granak and Majesky-Vydareny pairs. We will see tomorrow.
Clear nr. 1 in goal is Jan Lasak with Stana as back-up.
12# Peter Bondra 05-01-2005, 06:20 AM Why didn't Bicek make the team?
IMO, he should have made the team over Marcel Hossa.
Anyway, now with Majesky injured, Obsut will probably be called back up and signed on the roster come next group stage.
Defen. pairings yesterday:
Strbak-Visnovsky
Chara-Granak
Suchy-Majesky (later Lintner)
Vydareny-Lintner (later Chara)
Diaboli 05-01-2005, 06:45 AM well, if i said better "offensive" than fine. but i said simply "better". better all round and much more capable of winning.
