Entering the 2004-05 season, minor-league journeyman Frederic Cassivi was slated as the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks' backup goalie to Ilya Bryzgalov.
"We're going to go as long as we can with him - he's the reason we're in the playoffs," Shaw said. "He went from a guy who wasn't going to play a lot to a guy with 10 shutouts ... he's sort of re-made his career. I think he's earned that, and until he proves otherwise, he's going to be our No. 1 goalie."
...
In September, the Ducks named Bryzgalov the starting goalie, which made sense since he is the Anaheim Mighty Ducks' 2000 second-round draft pick who would have started the season with Anaheim had the NHL season begun on time. Cassivi is 29 and had only logged eight career NHL games.
But Bryzgalov faltered in January, and Cassivi ended up leading the AHL in shutouts with 10 and finishing with the lowest goals-against average (2.07) of any starting goalie in the Ducks' eight-year history
...
The slower Ducks will try to wear down Milwaukee with physical play, and use their deep defensive core to shut down an Admirals offense that led the Western Conference in goals.
"The best thing about a 4-in-7 series, all those little things, finishing your checks, maybe stick a guy behind the play, that's going pay dividends in games 5, 6, and 7," Ducks forward Zenon Konopka said.
All three pairs of defensemen the Ducks used down the stretch - Aaron Rome and Chris McAlpine, Kurtis Foster and Marc Popovic, and Shane O'Brien and Sheldon Brookbank - have played well together and have held high-scoring opponents in check.
