ROSTER MOVES EXPECTED AFTER NEXT 2 GAMES
More changes are coming for the Sharks as they whittle the roster down to 23 for opening night.
"We'll probably move a goalie and forward out today," said Sharks Head Coach Ron Wilson. "After the next two games we'll send more down. With the volume of games, we'll still keep a lot of players so we don't fatigue anyone."
The Sharks are currently carrying enough bodies for eight forward lines, along with nine defensemen and four goalies. Following Thursday's action in Colorado, Team Teal will likely be down to six lines of forwards and eight defensemen.
There are still several young prospects on the radar screen of Wilson and his staff and they have very legitimate opportunities to be on the opening night roster. There work is still cut out for them to make the roster.
"It's a lot like boxing," said Wilson. "They can't ‘out point' a veteran. They have to get the knockout to get a veteran's position. That will play out in the exhibition games. A couple of young players have been a considerable surprise."
With Wilson's emphasis on preseason games, Sharks hopefuls still have opportunities to make that lasting impression.
"Outside of Bernier and Davison, nobody has played two games," said Wilson. "There is still a long way to go."
That means that players like Brad Boyes, Marcel Goc, Christian Ehrhoff and others will have to make the most of their opportunities.
"Boyes struggled early in the scrimmages, but he played his best so far against LA," said Wilson. "He has good hockey sense and handles the puck well."
Despite some praise from his coach, Boyes faces some steep roadblocks on the way to October 9 in Edmonton.
"Up the middle we have Marleau, Damphousse, Ricci, McCauley, Primeau and Smith," said Wilson. "He's got to win a job and that goes for all the young guys. They have to knock a veteran off the pedestal. There are a lot of exhibition games left and plenty of time to show what they can do."
---
Based on that, and assuming he's still with the club on Saturday, I'll definitely be watching out for Boyes since Wilson has said he's picked up his game. I'll report back, as always, after the game on Saturday with line combos and such.
