Caps Still After Joseph?nordique 09-23-2003, 02:29 PM Link (http://insider.espn.go.com/insider/rumorcentral?sport=nhl) txpd 09-24-2003, 06:38 AM Link (http://insider.espn.go.com/insider/rumorcentral?sport=nhl) I can't imagine the Caps interest in Cujo as anymore than moving a big contract and then moving Cujo to a 3rd team. A defenseman better than Jason Doig to be #3 on the Caps. Colorado and St. Louis are the only teams out west with any interest in Cujo. Their #3's are Morris(colorado) and Jackman(st louis) there is no way that the Caps get Blake, Foote, or Morris or McInnes, Pronger or Jackman for Cujo. IF the Caps traded Jagr for Cujo, I would expect the Caps to get no more than Skoula for Cujo and that would be a lot. I'm not sure how that would make the caps a better team either on paper either. Former 50 goal scorer traded for a mid-pack defender doesn't improve anything except the balance sheet. More likely than not Cujo will be available for free in a few days off the waiver wire. txpd 09-24-2003, 10:52 AM You're probably right now that I think about it. More likely than not Cujo will be available for free in a few days off the waiver wire. I guess it depends on what happens with the $11m that goes back in Ted's pocket if they can move Jagr. For sure it would mean that the Capitals have enough money to make sure that Gonchar gets resigned when its time. Over the long run that might be more important. If you had to choose which would you keep? Jagr or Gonchar? I take a 30minute Norris trophy candidate myself. That payroll cut could also mean the difference between who the Caps grab for down the stretch. There will be a boatload of defensemen playing out one year contracts. Moving Jagr's contract might be the difference between adding a veteran impact player like a Leetch or Carney and a depth player like a Wesley or Odelein. The bottom line is the Capitals are full at forward and thin on defense. Bondra, Lang, Nylander, Grier, Halpern, Konowalchuk have all scored 20 goals in the NHL. There is reason to believe that Zubrus is ready to do at least that as well. That's 7 guys plus there are Gordon, Semin and Sutherby. Add Gonchar to that and the Caps have a lot of offense to lean on. If Eminger is ready to play and Doig can play at least where he played last year, Jagr out and a big dog veteran defenseman in could make a big difference. So...giving Jagr away for free and allowing room for the right move for the stretch could be the difference between a great season to remember before the abyss and not carrying if they ever come back to play again. IMO of course gocaps8 09-25-2003, 10:57 PM From Washington Times Caps general manager George McPhee denied a rumored deal on ESPN.com that had goalie Olie Kolzig being traded to Colorado and center Robert Lang to Detroit, with surplus goalie Curtis Joseph coming from the Red Wings and center Alex Tanguay from the Avalanche. | ||
