First, there was a big discussion about how the teams will ever travel to St. John's. I explained in other threads that this has never been an issue through 14 years of AHL hockey in St. John's. No team has ever had to row to St. John's in a canoe or take a 6 hour Ferry ride. Now comes the issue of this silly logo. Surely it is something that a kid drew. The St. John's Fog Devils said they would not be releasing color/logo information until the St. John's Maple Leafs finished their season at Mile One Stadium. I don't mean to come off sounding pissy or angry....it just surprises me the image that some people have regarding Newfoundland and St. John's. St. John's currently has the 3rd longest running team in the American Hockey League and the bulk of the reason why we are losing the team is because of lack of competition in other Atlantic Canadian Provinces. This goes to show that St. John's has what it takes to house an American Hockey League team, as well as a QMJHL team. I would have to say that there are teams in the QMJHL that are more isolated than St. John's. The league commissioner recently said that St. John's will be one of the best cities in the league and we have one of the best arenas in all of junior hockey. Regarding the name given to the St. John's team, I have to admit that it wouldn't be my first choice either. However, I will support whatever they have here in St. John's. I am sure that first when teams like the "Mooseheads", "Screaming Eagles", and "MAINEiacs" people rolled up their eyes and wondered what the heck those names were all about. Give it a couple months of play next season, and the Fog Devils will seem just as normal as any other team in the league. However, I can't see how you can say that there are teams in the Q more isolated than St. John's? "cataracts"? what's that? i think my grandmother has cataracts in her eyes. the pei rocket? where's the "s" on the end of rocket???? i don't think its worthwhile even "defending" st.john's. the teams are actually going to get a chance to get a plane when they come here. they'll love it. they won't have to bus for hours on the iron lung. and not to offend the fans in the other provinces, but i've driven through nova scotia, new brunswick, and quebec, and well.............lets just say when you consider where some of the insults towards st.john's are coming from, its a joke. in all the years in the ahl, i never heard stuff like this from fans in other ahl cities, mostly american cities. if there were going to be stupid insults, you'd think it would come from them, not from places like cape breton, moncton, and pei. st.john's will be the premier franchise in the premier building in the qmjhl. Jeffroizzle 03-26-2005, 11:40 AM sorry to wind some of you guys up about the logo thing. Naturally it was only a joke and obviously not the fog devils logo. Geez, I thought newfoundlanders had a good sense of humour. chad_butt 03-26-2005, 12:45 PM I agree with your statement, St John's is getting a bit of a bad rap. However, I can't see how you can say that there are teams in the Q more isolated than St. John's? What I meant was although Newfoundland may be an "island", it is not isolated. It is just as easy to leave the Quebec region and fly into St. John's than it is Halifax or Moncton. I would be safe to bet that it is easier to fly into St. John's than it would be to PEI or Maine. We have an International Airport here in St. John's and flights will not be a problem. That being said, I did not realize that busses were the norm in the Quebec League. You are right that by bus, St. John's is isolated. However, flying to St. John's will be a treat for the young players and will give them a taste of what professional hockey is all about with experiencing team flights. chad_butt 03-26-2005, 12:49 PM very well said, mr.butt! st.john's will be the best city and have the best rink in the qmjhl. and the name "fog devils" is no worse then "sea dogs", "mooseheads", "screaming eagles", "maineiacs", or any of the others really! in fact, i'll say "fog devils" is a better nickname then those. and think of the others. I fully agree with your post. The majority of teams and players that have visited St. John's in the past have loved coming to play here, and the "good times" that follow on George Street. For people from places like PEI, Moncton, and other teams in the league to suggest that St. John's will be second class compared to the rest of the league is nonsense. With respect to the Atlantic Canadian Teams, St. John's will be the second biggest city in the league (next to Halifax) and will have the most current and up-to-date facilities in the league with Mile One Stadium. If we were second class, we would not have hosted an American Hockey League All-Star Game, World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, or the 2005 Scott Tournament of Hearts. chad_butt 03-26-2005, 12:51 PM sorry to wind some of you guys up about the logo thing. Naturally it was only a joke and obviously not the fog devils logo. Geez, I thought newfoundlanders had a good sense of humour. Newfoundlanders indeed have a sense of humor. But there comes a point when the jokes become insults to the quality of like we do have here in St. John's. Sure, there are rural areas of the Province where you very well may have to take a ferry or "canoe" to get there, but St. John's is one of the largest cities in Atlantic Canada. I am sure there area remote areas of PEI, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia that are just as isolated and remote as areas of Newfoundland. I myself got a good kick out of the Fog Devils logo made by the kid. However, I am expecting a very good logo to be unveiled within' the coming weeks....stay tuned. Go Fog Devils!!! Hoja 03-26-2005, 02:38 PM Well...this seems to be getting a bit blown out of proportion... :shakehead Cayouche5 03-26-2005, 02:52 PM very well said, mr.butt! the pei rocket? where's the "s" on the end of rocket???? In honor of Maurice ''Rocket'' Richard Chootoi 03-26-2005, 03:03 PM here, you can find out all you need to know about the Q logos including "what is a cataracte?" and the rocket richard thing http://www.lhjmq.qc.ca/lang_en/index.php?page=8735432&PHPSESSID=b200688b5769aa02f1838b9c51ef53a1 Joe Canadian 03-26-2005, 09:28 PM sorry to wind some of you guys up about the logo thing. Naturally it was only a joke and obviously not the fog devils logo. Geez, I thought newfoundlanders had a good sense of humour. Newfoundlanders do have a good sence of humor... so please don't lump everyone of us into the the overreaction column. I do agree with what Chad said, but I think it would be better served as it's own thread... not as a reaction to what was plainly a joke. chad_butt 03-27-2005, 09:14 AM I am seriously sorry about the fuss I seem to have started. I agree that I did over-react a little. However, I joined this forum on Thursday, and every post that I read about the Fog Devils was nothing but negative (i.e, how to get here, our funny name, and possible logo). I hope we can put this behind us all and start talking about hockey and the upcoming draft. Sincerely, chad_butt chad_butt 04-23-2005, 10:22 PM In today's Telegram, I noticed an ad in the Sports section.
