MightyAdam 03-10-2005, 06:27 PM Here, we can all talk about a potential upcoming draft. Anybody know about any potential players, other than Crosby, who will be in this draft? He has been the biggest talk of this years draft, since he was 15 years old. The majority of us probably have no idea what other players are going to be in this draft, if there is one. Say the Ducks get the second overall pick, for example. Would there be a player they could use right away? Or would they maybe even be willing to trade Federov and say Chistov to another team for a prospect and the number one draft pick overall? Could you even imagine what the Ducks future would be if they get the number one draft pick overall? They would have Crosby, which would eventually become the all-time face of the Ducks, diminishing any leftover memory Paul Karia might have had here in his stay. Then you would have a guy like Getzlaf, who because he is on the same team as Crosby would progress over the years at a greater level then say playing without him. And then you have Perry. I know not many people know what he can do at the NHL level. But I was pleasantly surprised the past week to hear that two of his goals were from slapshots. I used to like to compare him to Iglina, cause of how Iglina used to fall down a lot when he was first in the NHL. But I didn't know if Perry had a good slap shot. And obviously, he must. But, can you imagine the potential fire-power those two would have on the same team, especially with the rule changes that will probably make the game higher scoring? I don't want to compare it to Gretsky and Kurri cause those two players are two of the greatest players ever to play the game. And, not many people seem to confident with Perry, even though (uhh umm) he leads the whole OHL in scoring, by a long shot. People last year thought Shremp was real good. Obviosly, Perry must be at least as good as him cause he is on the same team as him, and has more goals. And then there is Foster. When is the last prospect, one who can score, who can shoot the puck 100 mph? And he is 6'5. Oh yeah, and he the 2nd +/ of defensemen on his team (besides Smirnov whom I would not count cause he is not a regular defenseman). Then, you have a guy who has been compared to a poor mans Lidstrom, in Smid. Didn't Lidstrom win two to three years in a row for best league defenseman? Sounds like the pick wasn't so bad after all. I don't know, I just think that the NHL can actually save itself if it gets a deal going, with the introduction of Crosby. Lets just hope he is with the Ducks.

Either Gilbert Brule (5'11 center from Vancouver of the WHL) or Jack Johnson (6'1 Defensemen from the US National program) will go number 2 overall.
Whatever teams gets the number 1 overall pick will take Crosby no matter what trade offers are thrown at them. They would laugh at a Feds and Chistov proposal.
Ducks would be set up the middle for 10 years with Crosby as the number 1 center and Getzlaf as the number 2. But, the chances of the Ducks getting the first overall pick are very slim though. There is likely going to be a lottery based on the combined standings of the last 3 or 4 years which would put the Ducks in the 8-12 range in the draft. Even if the Ducks win the lottery it's not a guarantee that the lottery winner will be able to move up more than 5 spots. So if the Ducks move up to the 4th or 5th spot they can get someone like Bobby Ryan, Jack Skille, Anze Kopitar or Marek Zagrapan.
I'm going to assume the Ducks will be drafting around 9th again and the player I like at that spot is Defensmen Marc Staal from Sudbury of the OHL.
Ducks_è_Halos 03-10-2005, 09:38 PM The Ducks also need to draft a goaltender in perhaps the 3rd or 4th round...What are the top goalies for the draft if there is one?
I think Bobby Ryan would be a good pick for a forward or Marc Staal for defense.
MightyAdam 03-15-2005, 01:22 AM Sounds pretty good. Does Marc have more offensive skills or defenseman skills?

Here is a good profile on Staal from Internation Scouting.
http://internationalscouting.com/
"Staal is a budding two-way D-man capable of logging a ton of ice time. His competitiveness and desire are second to none. Look for him to become the undisputed leader of the Wolves blueline. With 19 points he has already surpassed last years points totals, and is now jumping into the rush more often. He has demonstrated that he is able to make good choices in both ends of the rink, and is able to take offensive risks and recover in time to return to his own end. He is keeping his gap tighter in the neutral zone, which keeps opponents wary as he does not hesitate to step into them with some jarring hits. Staal is not afraid to sacrifice his body and clears the front of the net well. Though not a finisher, he plays well in both ends of the ice. Willing to fight, but doesn't like it. Will be a solid player in the NHL."

Lyons71 03-15-2005, 08:30 PM I hope that they do an even lottery... 30 balls, one for each team, and here's why: Every team has ALREADY been rewarded for their bad play in previous seasons with the next draft. You can't just reward teams that perennially suck and give them the best prospect we've seen in a while because they have poor management/ownership... I think that they should have a completely even draft lottery to pick the order, and then just have it zig-zag... so you pick 1st and 60th, 30th, and 31st etc...
Pepper 03-16-2005, 05:23 AM Dunno about draft but someone should learn how to divide a post in to paragraphs...

So if they happen to come to a collective bargaining agreement later this year, will they have the draft by phone calls?... or is the 2005 draft cancelled for good?
This is so frustrating :banghead:
Roger's Pancreas* 03-24-2005, 01:37 AM I'm guessing that people on this board have a better idea of what to do for the draft than Bettman does. There will be a draft, they can't just let this kid walk off to the Red Wings and flip the bird to blackhawks/rangers. But at the same time you can't give him to the Capitals/Penguins based on what happened two years ago. I'm worried that Gary is going to drop the ball one last time and there's so much riding on this one.

Hopefully they would still have a real draft on TV and everything. Crosby is so high profile you would think the NHL would want his face all over TV draft day.
If they do reach an agreement in the next few months the summer should be spent trying to bring back fans and advertisers. One big step will be having the usual televised draft with Crosby being brought out as the new face of the league.
