How are they going to get to St. John's? Bus, jet, boat?
The way I see it, anything but a jet is too long.

Frankie 03-08-2005, 08:50 AM plane. Chootoi 03-08-2005, 09:00 AM agreed. taking the ferry or whatever is like a 5 hour trip isn't it? plus you have to drive to cape breton to get there which for teams in quebec is like a 10 hour drive already. then you have to drive across newfoundland. that's almost a full 24 hour travel time to get there. you'd have to fly IMO. does anyone know what st. john's has to pay in travel subsidy for other teams vs. what they pay now for AHL teams? Frankie 03-08-2005, 09:18 AM teams won't be taking a bus/boat to newfoundland. i think the fog devils will pay 175,000 per year for teams to fly into st.john's. the leafs don't pay anything directly for visiting teams travel anymore. there is a league-wide ahl travel fund. Joe Canadian 03-08-2005, 03:15 PM They will be taking a plane I think that is pretty obvious... depending on where they would take the ferry it's like a 18-24 hour trip (ferry time + driving) to Halifax... with only two teams within that distance, it's pretty clear all teams will be flying in. sveiglar 03-09-2005, 07:36 AM The FDs will buy canoes for every team, and even paint each teams logo on each their canoe at no extra cost. Watch out going around the south coast though... it can get pretty nasty around Burgeo. RyanM 03-11-2005, 04:00 PM The Fog Devils will pay $17,000 in travel costs every time a team has a road game in St. John's. I would imagine teams will play 2 games in a row to help keep the cost as low as possible. Adele 03-11-2005, 07:56 PM I would say two games a trip is a definite - this would make sense for any fans who are going to make a road trip. It would be a week end blast alecfromtherock 03-13-2005, 12:11 PM The Fog Devils will pay $17,000 in travel costs every time a team has a road game in St. John's. The $17,000 you are referring to has already been added to the ticket cost :madfire: It might be 2 weeks home for the FD and 2 weeks away for the FD(one round trip per month for the FD) Division or Conference teams will have to travel 2 or more times a year to St. John’s. $17,000 per trip for team coming here? I will use Thursday March 18 - Monday March 21 on the Air Canada website for a mock flight to St. John’s from various QMJHL cities. (Noting the site would only let me have 9 passengers at a time) and 25 passengers will be the team passenger number for coming here. Halifax-St. John’s D A $ 21:10 23:08 Tango $72(lowest) 19:45 21:42 Tango $198(highest) 15:10 16:23 Tango $59(L) 3 other times $129(H) $131 for the lowest ticket cost/person = $3,257 $327 for the highest ticket cost/person = $8,175 Average ticket cost $5716 from Halifax Quebec City-St. John’s $387 Tango(3 departure times) (only choice) $555 Fun (3 times, one choice) $942/person X 25 = $23,550 When we average out Halifax and Quebec city for that weekend we get $14,633/trip, almost $2,500 off the $17,000 estimated air travel cost. Quebec teams will come to St. John’s once a year for the regular season, me thinks the 17K is inflated. Yeah, but with fluctuations in airline costs and other travel expences that $2,500 can be spent very quickly. LaLaLaprise 03-14-2005, 12:01 PM Im pretty sure it will be by charters not like a regular flight. chad_butt 03-23-2005, 10:58 PM Im pretty sure it will be by charters not like a regular flight. Actually, you may be surprised to hear that the St. John's Maple Leafs have always used commercial flights to fly to and from St. John's. I am not sure what the routine is in the QMJHL, but I know the Baby Leafs always used commercial airlines such as Air Canada. The routine for the Baby Leafs was to fly from St. John's to Toronto, and then take a bus to start the road-trip. I am not sure what the Fog Devils will be doing, but I can guarantee that teams visiting St. John's will be flying directly into St. John's. It is unreasonable to think that they will be taking bus/ferry. St. John's is no more isolated that any other city in the QMJHL and with the excellent airport service we have here, I do not expect it to be a problem afterall. Another note of interest is that the Dobbin Group, the parent owners of the Fog Devils, is owned by Mr. Craig Dobbin, CEO of Canadian Helicopters Corp. (CHC). Perhaps he could use his connections to have a private jet or "chopper" for the team. Just a thought... Perhaps he could use his connections to have a private jet or "chopper" for the team. I'm not sure how the Dobbin Group is set up, but the owner of the Fog Devils is Craig's brother Derm... now Craig may be a co-owner, but ya can't forget Dermy. :) chad_butt 03-24-2005, 01:06 PM I think the better statement would be "ya can't forget Craig". It wasn't until Craig got involved in the negotiations with SJSE that we got the lease agreement for Mile One. From my understanding, Craig is the President of the Fog Devils, and Derm is the CEO...but you're right....Derm will have most to do with how the team is run. biff44 03-24-2005, 04:17 PM The FDs will buy canoes for every team, and even paint each teams logo on each their canoe at no extra cost. Not a canoe, but a Batteau! http://media.gatewayva.com/lna/specials/batteau/buildbatteau.pdf chad_butt 03-24-2005, 04:43 PM I know you guys are only joking...but seriously....getting into St. John's is no harder than getting into any other city in the league. We have successfully had an American Hockey League team here for 14 years and travel has not been an issue. No players had to row in on canoes or build boats. Seriously...there won't be an issue getting in and out of St. John's to play hockey games. I invite you all to visit St. John's and take in a few games next season and see for yourselves how much of a hockey city this is. It's a safe bet to say that Mile One Stadium will be one of the nicest buildings in the league and located in an excellent location. biff44 03-25-2005, 12:04 AM We're just joking! But it does sound like a plane ride is in order. I am not sure I would want to be on a ferry for 5 hours in the middle of winter. sveiglar 03-28-2005, 10:20 AM No players had to row in on canoes or build boats. But were they given the opportunity? Not likely... too expensive to insure, I'll guess. And yes, I too am joking. They're my hometown team and I'll be there in full force for them. Joe Canadian 03-28-2005, 02:46 PM But it does sound like a plane ride is in order. No one said there wasn't... I'll repeat this again. Teams will not drive, walk, or canoe to St. John's, they will take a airplane. I am not sure I would want to be on a ferry for 5 hours in the middle of winter. You do realize that people usually don't stand outside on the ferry for 5 hours... there is an inside... and it has the magical invention called heating. :) biff44 03-28-2005, 03:26 PM I am sure many do go outside, especially while they are "chuming" over the rail. It's not a raft... it's a huge ferry... it's even equipped with barf bags, and a fancy thing called washrooms. Plus, it has to be pretty rough out for you to feel waves on that boat...
