MOGiLNY 01-29-2005, 01:47 PM Hi guys, I've got a Linksys wireless 802.11g router for my home network, but I'm just wondering, would it be possible for me to connect another wireless router and it's computers to this same network?
So basically I want to know if I can connect 2 wireless routers together.
n00dles 01-29-2005, 02:39 PM Yeah, you can. One of the routers then works in some kind of "repeater" mode and has its standard gateway to be set to the ip-adress of the other router.
At least that is how I think it works.
With the exact configuration I can't help you though. :dunce:
john g 01-29-2005, 08:34 PM you can no problem -- question is why? unless you live in a ginormous house one WAP should provide adequate coverage - unless you have bizarre wall/floor intereference
both should be set up obviously with the same SSID, same subnet
MOGiLNY 01-29-2005, 10:45 PM thanks guys!
the reason why i'm asking about this is because I was looking on ebay for a wireless adapter for my xbox, but they are all too pricey at around 100 bucks, and then I stumbled upon a wireless router which is $30 or so, and that gave me an idea that i could hook up the xbox to this $30 router and have it communicate with the "main" one that all the other computers use
MOGiLNY 01-30-2005, 11:21 AM ok last question, the router I currently have, is a G router, if I get a B router, would it be able to communicate with the G?
wingz198 01-30-2005, 11:45 AM I think they're supposed to be able to communicate with each other, but I'm not completely sure
DeleteThisAccount 01-30-2005, 12:00 PM 802.11g is backward compatible with 802.11b, but any communication between an 11g device and an 11b device will be at the highest bitrate supported by the 11b device (ie. 11Mbps). As far as an 11b AP repeating 11g traffic, I've often wondered myself, but I doubt it would repeat at 11g speed even if it did work.
MOGiLNY 01-30-2005, 01:46 PM speed between the 11g and 11b doesn't really concern me as long as the 11b doesn't slow down my main network.. would that be an issue?

Depends, is your main network, wireless? If yes, then your network will run at 802.11b speeds. If not, you're wireless network will still run at 802.11b speeds, but your wired ethernet will still operate at 10/100 Mbps.

well i've got the wireless G router which is connected to 2 computers through the cable, and one is through the wireless card..
so if i hooked up the wireless B router to it, the whole network would slow down?

Just the wireless part, that would run at 802.11b speed.

i assume you have the network adapter for the xbox? if so why not just buy a network hub of some sort since thats all you are really doing

The network adapter is internal on the xbox, so yes, I have it.
I can't get the hub because the computers that I want to connect it to are all on different floors..
Anyways, thanks for the help everybody! I'm going to start looking for a cheap G router now.
