first I thought, I couldn't listen over the 'net...
now I tried to pop in a music CD ... and nada comes through the speakers at all...
a) how long are computer speakers supposed to last?
b) any suggestions to try and re-install and get them working again?
c) what would be a good quality - low cost purchase?
Thanks

You sure that you have checked that the speakers are plugged into the right port of your soundcard?
Sometimes I messed that one up, too.

ThanksIn the bottom right corner of your screen do you see a little grey (WinXP) or yellow speaker (Win2000) (volume control)? Can you double click on it, and make sure there is nothing muted or that has the volume bar all the way down?
Are you sure the speakers are plugged both into the wall (power) and into the back of the machine (usually with at least one connection going into the green hole).
Are the speakers turned on?
If you turn the volume nob on the speakers to max, and you pull the connection out of the computer, do they make a poping sound?

music cd? old comp/cd drive?
check if theres a wire from the cd-drive to the sound card.. should be one of these.. was a problem for many some time ago - missing this wire meant cd cd's werent played by the sound card..
